00:00Former Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has criticised Education Minister Fadina Siddiq
00:05for rushing to announce plans to improve student safety following a series of high-profile crimes in schools.
00:13Yesterday, Fadina said that her ministry would immediately implement reforms in five key areas,
00:19including child protection and mental health, in light of recent criminal incidents involving students,
00:24such as gang rape and bullying.
00:26In a Facebook post, Nik Nazmi, the former Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister,
00:33said the ministry's five-point approach only addresses the symptoms of such incidents.
00:38He added that the real problem is not merely the lack of policies or circulars,
00:43but a culture and system that fails to support teachers and students.
00:48Nik Nazmi also said a recent warning by Education Director General Azam Ahmad
00:52for schools not to cover up bullying and sexual misconduct is a sign that the education system
00:57has failed to provide a safe space for school communities to speak up without fear.
01:03He said Fadina must listen to the voices from the ground and understand the realities faced by teachers,
01:08adding that she should defend those working to improve student safety
01:12rather than undermine them for political convenience.
01:15Thank you, Jo, FMT.
