Transcript
00:00I did come here to have a look at another one that I was told about but anyway I found Lot 2, Lot 7 and a couple of others throughout the catalogue that would be much more beneficial use for the two that we purchased than the one that I actually come to have a look at.
00:20He does buy a lot of Roseville Park genetics anyway, he's a daughter. Daughter of Roseville Park started in WA, the Geraldton area, north of Perth.
00:30And so what made you go, right, these are the ones that will actually be really good in the operation, whether it's a cut or...?
00:36I've been trying to buy 72 sons previously. Yeah.
00:39So it was sort of like with 72 and knowing the full category history behind both with 72, like you'll either breed horns or you'll either breed PPs or breed PHs.
00:52So just, and know that he does nip with the genetics we've used before.
00:57There's one other ram here that's actually horny, I think Lot 71, which goes back to 1133, which is pole breed.
01:04And then Roger originally aimed 1133, I bought it for him, I should be, six or eight years ago, bought him as a gram lamb for him in Dublin.
01:15Yeah, wow.
01:16And then he sold them back to Matthew again. So he's done the full wool.
01:20Awesome. How are they going to be used over in WA? Is it for a full wool job? Is it a bit of both for me?
01:26Oh, well, in a standard situation, because he breeds, like he has a ram, on property ram salvage here as well.
01:31Mm-hmm.
01:32Like all, he's got horns and pugs.
01:33Mm-hmm.
01:34Um, just, well, the safety of wool in his area, just, just a bit of dual purpose wool, still chasing wool cut,
01:42a bit like good white brats of wools, then chasing a bit of grassy.
01:45Yeah. What are the kind of aims with those wool cuts?
01:48Oh, well, the thing is, I suppose that depends on your environment, what you put them back into, of course.
01:53Mm-hmm.
01:54But at least you've got a bit of, um, unless you've got lock and skin density, you're not going to get wool.
01:59Mm-hmm.
02:00It also then goes hand in hand.
02:02Mm-hmm.
02:03And, and just the coverage, and, and they're just uncomplicated.
02:06Um, uh, like free, like good free skins.
02:11Mm-hmm.
02:12You know, it's nice and waxy.
02:13Mm-hmm.
02:14And, and they've done it all in the paddock.
02:15They haven't been set up in a set situation.
02:17Mm-hmm.
02:18So how long have these guys been using hazeldeen for now?
02:21It's never, never bought these before.
02:23First time.
02:24First time.
02:25Yeah.
02:26First time, top price, all the way over to WA.
02:27When I found these, then I went for a walk right through the catalogue to see how many others
02:30were through the catalogue and what they were breeding.
02:32And that's why then, if you only ever see two, or, like, they're running, and I, then,
02:37then, then talking to Ed, they, they talk about using this again, well, user 72 again,
02:42in another AI program next time round again, because they've been breeding pretty well.
02:46Well, we're very happy with the sale.
02:48It's a very strong result, and, uh, certainly right up, uh, well up on last year's average,
02:53so they had a good clearance, so, uh, it's, uh, very satisfying.
02:57Mm.
02:58And so we saw a real demand for horned rams at the end there, pushing that average up.
03:00Yeah, that was interesting.
03:01It's, um, it's amazing, yeah, because certainly there's been a, uh, a move towards poles
03:06over the last few years, but, you know, this year sort of defied the trend a bit, but,
03:10the, uh, the horns sold a bit better.
03:12Mm.
03:13So, anyway, that was an interesting result.
03:15Mm.
03:16And so, rams were sold to Victoria, South Australia, WA, across New South Wales.
03:20Yes.
03:21What's that telling you about the versatility of your animal and its ability to perform
03:24in a few different spots?
03:25Yeah, I look, they've, they've often, you know, we've run out of sheep in lots of different
03:30environments.
03:31And, uh, and it just proves that, I mean, the merinos are remarkably adaptable, and what
03:35we do.
03:36Mm.
03:37And, um, it sort of defies a lot of the old thoughts that, um, you know, you had to run
03:42specific types of specific areas, which really, you know, they'll adapt to any environment
03:47really.
03:48Mm.
03:49And so, how did you get these rams ready for sale this year?
03:51Because it has been a remarkably tough year seasonally.
03:53It has been a tough year, and look, they, they, they've, they've done well.
03:56We, we, we did have some fun there on that, they've, uh, done very well on that.
04:00Um, and merinos like it dry, you know, as long as the nutrition's there, they, and we
04:05haven't had to, uh, artificially feed them or anything.
04:08They, uh, we've done well on, on, uh, on crops last year.
04:11But, um, they've, um, yeah, so it's, uh, but the dry weather suits them really.
04:16Mm.
04:17And just finally, is there anything else you think folks need to know about how the sale
04:21went today?
04:22What, any of the preps went behind it?
04:24Anything I missed or anything for 2026?
04:26I don't think so.
04:27I think it's, uh, you know, I mean, we, we've always had a, had a policy of raising our
04:32sheep, you know, under commercial conditions.
04:34We don't, we don't like to pamper them.
04:36Um, you know, they're well fed from, on, on, on good crops and pasture.
04:40But, uh, we don't, we don't like to do anything more than that.
04:43I mean, you know, there's some sheep that's similar ages.
04:45We'll find that are, you know, another 20, 40 kilos heavier, but, um, this is how they
04:50are.
04:51They do it on their own and that's how it should be.
04:53Mm.
04:54Mm.
04:55Mm.
04:56Mm.
04:57Mm.
04:58Mm.
04:59Mm.
05:00Mm.
