00:00No, the European Parliament didn't silence a Polish MEP.

00:07Social media users have been criticising the European Parliament for supposedly being undemocratic,

00:14after a clip went viral showing a far-right Polish MEP being cut off mid-speaking.

00:19The video shows Gazegosz Braun responding to a speech by Belgian Socialist MEP Kathleen van Brempt

00:26about the EU's support for Ukraine.

00:28You're not helping Ukrainian people who were looking for shelter, escaping their own country.

00:38The clip is shared with captions such as this one,

00:41which criticises the European Parliament's supposed lack of democracy

00:45by silencing Braun while he was speaking.

00:48However, in reality, Esteban González-Ponz, vice president of the European Parliament,

00:53was merely acting in line with common parliamentary procedure,

00:57rather than targeting Braun specifically for his views.

01:01The Cube reached out to the European Parliament's press services for clarity,

01:05which pointed us towards Rule 178 of the Rules of Procedures.

01:09It says that the president can give the floor to MEPs who indicate,

01:13either by raising a blue card or using the electronic system,

01:17their wish to ask another MEP a question while they are talking.

01:20The rule specifies that the question can be no longer than half a minute.

01:24In the clip attached to the social media posts,

01:28we can see that Brown's intervention lasts almost 40 seconds

01:31from the moment he starts speaking until he's cut off.

01:35There are also other rules attached to the blue card system.

01:38For example, only one blue card question per intervention is usually allowed,

01:42and it's meant to be a question, not a statement.

01:44The parliament president can also deny blue card questions to keep time,

01:49and the MEP raising the blue card and the speaker can't be from the same political group.
