00:00In more than three decades in entertainment journalism, I've met hundreds of celebrities
00:04at interviews, award shows, and parties. Some have even become good friends.
00:08So when I tell people about my job, they always want the inside scoop on the stars.
00:13Everyone from the waitress at my local seafood stand to CEOs of Fortune 500 companies,
00:18they all crave gossip.
00:20And the stars they ask about the most? A-list actors, rock gods, pop divas?
00:24Nope. They all want to know about reality stars.
00:27For years, reality was considered a lesser form of entertainment.
00:31Barbara Walters famously told Kim Kardashian in 2011 that she had no talent.
00:36More than a decade later, Kim is still here thanks to her charisma, business savvy, and yes, talent.
00:42She and others like her have had an undeniable cultural impact.
00:46So let's just say it. Reality TV is officially cool.
00:50Plus, with higher ethical standards and production values than ever before, it's no longer a guilty pleasure.
00:56After a long day winding down with Below Deck, Selling Sunset, or your favorite hard-bodied friends from Love Island,
01:02it is self-care.
01:04But it's not all fluff. Reality stars can also teach us something meaningful.
01:08Our cover stars, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, are a great example.
01:12Heather Gay and Whitney Rose left behind restrictive religious backgrounds.
01:16Mary Cosby shared an unflinching view of her son's struggle with addiction.
01:20Meredith Marks has offered an unfiltered look at how marriage can get after nearly 30 years.
01:25The crown prince of pop culture, Andy Cohen, tells us reality TV was always cool.
01:30It just took a minute for everyone to realize it.
01:33Thank goodness they did.
01:34Being into reality TV is about being interested in life.
01:38It's about being interested in people and the world.
01:40So tell the haters to take a hike in high heels.
01:43Is that a new reality format perhaps?
01:45At Us Weekly, we believe the higher your IQ, the greater your need for reality TV.
01:50So settle in, celebrate, and embrace the art of America's favorite pastime.
01:56Watch it, own it, and never apologize for loving it.
