We're going to start from the beginning.
00:01
We're going to start your origin story.
00:04
Because you had a very unique path to the adult industry.
00:07
So how did you end up as a director?
00:09
Well, it was accidental.
00:10
I never planned to be, I knew nothing about cameras, anything.
00:12
I feel like that's like everybody's story.
00:14
Yeah, I was, it's just a stockbroker minding my own business.
00:19
You were a stockbroker.
00:19
I was a stockbroker.
00:21
You know, firms were going under.
00:22
It was a long-winded story.
00:24
Long story short, I ended up in Florida.
00:26
We raised money to make this kickboxing thing this guy's going to do.
00:28
My partner's like, whoa, we can't be involved with this guy.
00:31
He used to do porn.
00:32
I'm like, whoa, no way.
00:33
That's the mafia.
00:34
Can't go near there.
00:35
This was 1990.
00:36
Right.
00:37
And anyway, I ended up getting in porn.
00:40
Long story short, because I meet Buck Adams.
00:41
And he's like, Jim, you should be producing movies.
00:43
The distributorship goes to hell.
00:46
And Buck's like, Jim, let's go back to California and make porn.
00:48
You're from California.
00:49
So we come back here.
00:51
That's how I got going with porn.
00:52
Buck Adams, I was his producer.
00:54
Wow.
00:54
Remember Buck?
00:55
And that first movie I did was that Speed Trap.
00:57
Old movie.
00:58
It's the one that, for years, they ran on the Spice Channel or one of those stations
01:03
with the Ferrari racing the Porsche in the rain or whatever.
01:06
That was the movie I did.
01:08
Wow.
01:08
Buck directed.
01:09
I do a cameo as a drug dealer in it.
01:12
So I was in my 20s when I started in porn.
01:15
And then how to become a director is, second time I made a movie is like a year later,
01:20
because I didn't want anything to do with porn, because really I made no money off the first
01:23
one.
01:24
And I go, a friend of mine from a rock band is like, Jim, why don't we make a porn?
01:28
We'll go in half.
01:29
It's like, whatever.
01:29
I'll do it again.
01:30
And one of the guys from the rock bands was on acid the morning of the shoot.
01:35
And I get up there and I go, okay, what's the plan?
01:37
Because I'm the producer.
01:38
And he was laying, rolling around on the ground, staring at a cigarette.
01:41
And I felt, you know, somebody has to step up here.
01:44
And I had the porn experience.
01:47
And we had a cameraman, my buddy flew out to shoot for free, you know, who was a videographer,
01:52
but knew nothing about porn.
01:53
Yeah.
01:53
So I became the director by default.
01:56
Wow.
01:56
And that's how I started directing porn.
01:59
I had the same sort of story why I started shooting the cameraman porn.
02:02
Yeah.
02:03
It was the same type of thing.
02:04
You showed up and like the cameraman was just on drugs and couldn't do it?
02:08
Long story short, your past, we had this movie we made.
02:12
I sell it.
02:13
But do you remember Dave Kravis, Coastline?
02:16
He hooks me up with Midnight Video.
02:18
I remember Coastline.
02:19
Can you remember Midnight Video?
02:20
Okay.
02:20
Yes, I think so.
02:21
They used to do all the parody movies in the early 90s.
02:23
Okay.
02:24
So Beach Bum Amateurs.
02:27
Okay.
02:27
So I go over there to sell him the movie.
02:30
He hooks up the deal.
02:30
So I deliver the movie.
02:32
And Kevin Beach on the set, what really got me going, says,
02:35
hey, do you want to shoot some amateurs for me?
02:38
And I said, I don't know how to shoot.
02:41
What do you mean?
02:42
I don't know.
02:42
I've never picked up a camera in my life.
02:43
What do you mean?
02:44
Where am I going to get these people?
02:45
He goes, they're amateurs.
02:46
You just walk on the street and you ask people.
02:48
I go, really?
02:49
How much are you going to give me?
02:50
Some ridiculous small amount of money.
02:54
Sold.
02:55
And I'm like, hmm.
02:57
Approach strangers.
02:58
No money.
02:59
Yes.
03:00
So that's why I feel we can get them for free.
03:01
I go, hmm, I needed some money.
03:03
And David Lorde was my production manager.
03:08
This is how we met.
03:09
Oh, wow.
03:10
So David Lorde, didn't know him, it wasn't David Lorde yet.
03:13
He was a salesman for Zane.
03:15
Okay.
03:15
I'd hooked a buddy up from another punk band, because I was associated with punk bands.
03:20
He got a job doing sales as Zane.
03:23
Uh-huh.
03:24
He goes, Jim, there's a guy over here who could be your, you know, could help you find
03:28
these amateurs if you want to do it.
03:29
So I go over there and David said, yeah, we can, you know, I know all these people,
03:34
which ended up just being porn actors, but I thought they were, and we'd have to pay
03:37
them a small amount.
03:38
Uh-huh.
03:38
And I figured, well, it's a beach bomb amateurs.
03:40
We got to go to the beach to shoot this.
03:42
You know, you have to do it right, I figured.
03:44
I didn't know about these rules.
03:45
You can't shoot on beaches and stuff.
03:47
And so I go down and shoot this thing and then people start filling it up, filling up the beach.
03:53
And then we've got one sex scene down in the middle of another one.
03:55
And people are starting to look at us.
03:56
I go, you should get out of here.
03:57
They're starting to fill up.
03:59
Yeah.
03:59
So we go to this one guy's house.
04:00
We shoot the rest of the movie.
04:01
So wait, hold on.
04:02
You shoot a sex scene on the beach?
04:04
Yeah, yeah.
04:04
People are just walking around.
04:05
I didn't think-
04:05
And you didn't think that that was a problem?
04:07
No.
04:08
I mean, why?
04:09
Because you can't have a sex in public.
04:11
Well, I didn't realize that at the time, okay?
04:14
I was not some film student or something.
04:17
You don't need to be a film student to know that.
04:20
But anyway, innocently minding my own business, I'm filming porn, right?
04:24
So I, it was Rick Masters who did the fucking.
04:26
It was 1992.
04:28
Okay.
04:28
So we finished the movie somewhere in the Hollywood Hills at, he's dead now, so I can say the name,
04:33
Dale Davis, the famous old surfing director from the 60s.
04:36
Okay.
04:36
If you look him up, he did all Jan and Dean, all that type of stuff.
04:39
Okay.
04:39
So we shot at his place.
04:40
So, but if I paid everybody, I actually lost money.
04:45
I go, this is not a good thing.
04:47
Three things in a row I'd lost money on.
04:48
I'm done with this porn.
04:50
I'm not going to try to be a porn guy anymore.
04:52
And I'm shooting camera too.
04:53
That was another thing.
04:54
I was shooting the video camera.
04:56
I didn't know how to do it.
04:56
So I had this video camera.
04:59
So I drop it off at Kevin's and he holds up, right back in the days of the Chromes, he holds them up and he goes, I need you to shoot.
05:07
And he saw, you're on the beach filming?
05:09
And I go, yeah.
05:10
He goes, shoot me more now, immediately.
05:12
And I'm like, no, I don't want to.
05:13
He's like, why?
05:14
He goes, I lost money.
05:15
He starts whipping me off $100 bills.
05:17
He goes, here, now you made some money.
05:19
Make me more.
05:21
Okay.
05:22
Sounds easy enough.
05:23
So I go back to the beach and, you know, and David Lord says, you know, the cops and everything are up top, you know, coming.
05:29
I go, so what?
05:29
We got to finish the scene.
05:31
All the cops are coming down to get us.
05:32
David Lord's going to swim into the ocean, escape.
05:35
I kept on shooting.
05:36
We, we, we.
05:37
And they arrested me.
