00:00We're going to start from the beginning.
00:01We're going to start your origin story.
00:04Because you had a very unique path to the adult industry.
00:07So how did you end up as a director?
00:09Well, it was accidental.
00:10I never planned to be, I knew nothing about cameras, anything.
00:12I feel like that's like everybody's story.
00:14Yeah, I was, it's just a stockbroker minding my own business.
00:19You were a stockbroker.
00:19I was a stockbroker.
00:21You know, firms were going under.
00:22It was a long-winded story.
00:24Long story short, I ended up in Florida.
00:26We raised money to make this kickboxing thing this guy's going to do.
00:28My partner's like, whoa, we can't be involved with this guy.
00:31He used to do porn.
00:32I'm like, whoa, no way.
00:33That's the mafia.
00:34Can't go near there.
00:35This was 1990.
00:36Right.
00:37And anyway, I ended up getting in porn.
00:40Long story short, because I meet Buck Adams.
00:41And he's like, Jim, you should be producing movies.
00:43The distributorship goes to hell.
00:46And Buck's like, Jim, let's go back to California and make porn.
00:48You're from California.
00:49So we come back here.
00:51That's how I got going with porn.
00:52Buck Adams, I was his producer.
00:54Wow.
00:54Remember Buck?
00:55And that first movie I did was that Speed Trap.
00:57Old movie.
00:58It's the one that, for years, they ran on the Spice Channel or one of those stations
01:03with the Ferrari racing the Porsche in the rain or whatever.
01:06That was the movie I did.
01:08Wow.
01:08Buck directed.
01:09I do a cameo as a drug dealer in it.
01:12So I was in my 20s when I started in porn.
01:15And then how to become a director is, second time I made a movie is like a year later,
01:20because I didn't want anything to do with porn, because really I made no money off the first
01:23one.
01:24And I go, a friend of mine from a rock band is like, Jim, why don't we make a porn?
01:28We'll go in half.
01:29It's like, whatever.
01:29I'll do it again.
01:30And one of the guys from the rock bands was on acid the morning of the shoot.
01:35And I get up there and I go, okay, what's the plan?
01:37Because I'm the producer.
01:38And he was laying, rolling around on the ground, staring at a cigarette.
01:41And I felt, you know, somebody has to step up here.
01:44And I had the porn experience.
01:47And we had a cameraman, my buddy flew out to shoot for free, you know, who was a videographer,
01:52but knew nothing about porn.
01:53Yeah.
01:53So I became the director by default.
01:56Wow.
01:56And that's how I started directing porn.
01:59I had the same sort of story why I started shooting the cameraman porn.
02:02Yeah.
02:03It was the same type of thing.
02:04You showed up and like the cameraman was just on drugs and couldn't do it?
02:08Long story short, your past, we had this movie we made.
02:12I sell it.
02:13But do you remember Dave Kravis, Coastline?
02:16He hooks me up with Midnight Video.
02:18I remember Coastline.
02:19Can you remember Midnight Video?
02:20Okay.
02:20Yes, I think so.
02:21They used to do all the parody movies in the early 90s.
02:23Okay.
02:24So Beach Bum Amateurs.
02:27Okay.
02:27So I go over there to sell him the movie.
02:30He hooks up the deal.
02:30So I deliver the movie.
02:32And Kevin Beach on the set, what really got me going, says,
02:35hey, do you want to shoot some amateurs for me?
02:38And I said, I don't know how to shoot.
02:41What do you mean?
02:42I don't know.
02:42I've never picked up a camera in my life.
02:43What do you mean?
02:44Where am I going to get these people?
02:45He goes, they're amateurs.
02:46You just walk on the street and you ask people.
02:48I go, really?
02:49How much are you going to give me?
02:50Some ridiculous small amount of money.
02:54Sold.
02:55And I'm like, hmm.
02:57Approach strangers.
02:58No money.
02:59Yes.
03:00So that's why I feel we can get them for free.
03:01I go, hmm, I needed some money.
03:03And David Lorde was my production manager.
03:08This is how we met.
03:09Oh, wow.
03:10So David Lorde, didn't know him, it wasn't David Lorde yet.
03:13He was a salesman for Zane.
03:15Okay.
03:15I'd hooked a buddy up from another punk band, because I was associated with punk bands.
03:20He got a job doing sales as Zane.
03:23Uh-huh.
03:24He goes, Jim, there's a guy over here who could be your, you know, could help you find
03:28these amateurs if you want to do it.
03:29So I go over there and David said, yeah, we can, you know, I know all these people,
03:34which ended up just being porn actors, but I thought they were, and we'd have to pay
03:37them a small amount.
03:38Uh-huh.
03:38And I figured, well, it's a beach bomb amateurs.
03:40We got to go to the beach to shoot this.
03:42You know, you have to do it right, I figured.
03:44I didn't know about these rules.
03:45You can't shoot on beaches and stuff.
03:47And so I go down and shoot this thing and then people start filling it up, filling up the beach.
03:53And then we've got one sex scene down in the middle of another one.
03:55And people are starting to look at us.
03:56I go, you should get out of here.
03:57They're starting to fill up.
03:59Yeah.
03:59So we go to this one guy's house.
04:00We shoot the rest of the movie.
04:01So wait, hold on.
04:02You shoot a sex scene on the beach?
04:04Yeah, yeah.
04:04People are just walking around.
04:05I didn't think-
04:05And you didn't think that that was a problem?
04:07No.
04:08I mean, why?
04:09Because you can't have a sex in public.
04:11Well, I didn't realize that at the time, okay?
04:14I was not some film student or something.
04:17You don't need to be a film student to know that.
04:20But anyway, innocently minding my own business, I'm filming porn, right?
04:24So I, it was Rick Masters who did the fucking.
04:26It was 1992.
04:28Okay.
04:28So we finished the movie somewhere in the Hollywood Hills at, he's dead now, so I can say the name,
04:33Dale Davis, the famous old surfing director from the 60s.
04:36Okay.
04:36If you look him up, he did all Jan and Dean, all that type of stuff.
04:39Okay.
04:39So we shot at his place.
04:40So, but if I paid everybody, I actually lost money.
04:45I go, this is not a good thing.
04:47Three things in a row I'd lost money on.
04:48I'm done with this porn.
04:50I'm not going to try to be a porn guy anymore.
04:52And I'm shooting camera too.
04:53That was another thing.
04:54I was shooting the video camera.
04:56I didn't know how to do it.
04:56So I had this video camera.
04:59So I drop it off at Kevin's and he holds up, right back in the days of the Chromes, he holds them up and he goes, I need you to shoot.
05:07And he saw, you're on the beach filming?
05:09And I go, yeah.
05:10He goes, shoot me more now, immediately.
05:12And I'm like, no, I don't want to.
05:13He's like, why?
05:14He goes, I lost money.
05:15He starts whipping me off $100 bills.
05:17He goes, here, now you made some money.
05:19Make me more.
05:21Okay.
05:22Sounds easy enough.
05:23So I go back to the beach and, you know, and David Lord says, you know, the cops and everything are up top, you know, coming.
05:29I go, so what?
05:29We got to finish the scene.
05:31All the cops are coming down to get us.
05:32David Lord's going to swim into the ocean, escape.
05:35I kept on shooting.
05:36We, we, we.
05:37And they arrested me.
