00:00Just prior, I had one of the guys come up here, he had a machine gun, he goes,
00:06boss, how much ammo do you think I need? He goes, I don't know, mate, you're the expert.
00:11He goes, oh, I might take another thousand rounds. I've got a bad feeling about this one.
00:18Every single Taliban machine gun's firing at these aircraft as it's slowly going out.
00:23Not one bullet hit that aircraft that day. Fortunes of war.
00:30Sergeant D's dead. I said that to Adam and I showed him the American grenade we had and I threw the grenade and, yeah, Sergeant D popped up and shot the guy.
00:42I was honoured and privileged to command some of the hardest soldiers on the planet.
00:49You could not lightly ask people to put themselves in the line of fire.
00:54Those dogs were so important. Early warning of ambushes are, well, quake. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for quake.
01:07I was sent to Afghanistan hunting down the top terrorists responsible for 9-11.
01:13Very conscious that I was the person who'd asked them to put their lives on the line.
01:22I was in the vehicle that hit an IED with Sean McCarthy in the back.
01:26And we hit a roadside IED or improvised explosive device.
01:29And, unfortunately, Sean was killed out of that.
01:32And then Mary turned around and five terrible words. Sean's been killed in Afghanistan.
01:47The SAS won every single fight. They achieved nothing but strategic success.
01:52The failure in Afghanistan wasn't the fault of the SAS.
01:55We're somewhere of $10 billion we spent. We had 41 people die. We had 260 wounded.
02:04Then you've got I don't know how many thousands of people that are carrying scars that you can't see.
02:13Do you think there has been a betrayal?
02:16As I said before, some were there for themselves.
02:19We are red hot on this topic.
02:22As Mary was saying, some generals were there to look after the troops properly.
02:28Others were there for themselves.
02:30We didn't order ourselves to go to Afghanistan. We were ordered to go.
02:34I never got to have a beer with my dad.
02:41It's a shame to see Australia waste a life.
02:47There's been a lot of, I think, mistruths or I would say more that some people in the media hoped it was true.
02:54We fight for this country.
02:56You know, this country's got so many great things going for it.
03:00But it's also got that classic Australian tall poppy syndrome.
03:05It's tough.
03:06You know, the great unknown has been how poorly we've been treated.
03:12We are not.
03:13We are not.
03:15It's a perfecting ball.
03:17We are young.
03:19It's a perfect thing.
03:25We are a perfecting ball playing.
03:26To the side of the side of the sea.
03:28We're tying on the red one.
03:29We are not.
03:30We are not.
03:31We are...
03:32We are good enough.
03:33We are not.
03:34But we are winning.
03:35We are not.
03:36We are not.
