00:00John Feliciano every Tuesday on Willard and Dibs, and he joins us now live both on 95.7
00:07The Game and the YouTube feed, so get on over there so you can see Mungo.
00:12Hey, John, what's going on today?
00:15What's up, guys?
00:16How y'all doing?
00:17We're doing all right.
00:18John joining us here on the River Islands guest line.
00:21Hey, before we play this for you, and I don't even know if you've heard it, it's on Richard
00:25Sherman's podcast.
00:26But what's your real review?
00:33Come on, John.
00:34Your real review of how the 49ers offensive line is currently playing?
00:41I mean, I just watched it again.
00:46I feel like the bigger problems are on the outside.
00:50On the outside?
00:52Kittle, we desperately need Kittle back.
00:55Sure.
00:56Gone are the days of Chris Conley.
01:01I mean, Juwan is still there, but he's not playing like he's capable.
01:06I'm guessing it's because of the broken ribs.
01:10B.A. is a great blocker.
01:12Debo is a great blocker.
01:13I think we're missing that right now.
01:16And obviously, yes, the offensive linemen need to play better.
01:19Yeah, and also, I think the Kittle part of it, John, I'm just looking at this play late
01:25in the second quarter where they try to run that outside toss, and Tonjes gets moved about
01:30eight yards back, and Juice can't get out there and make a block, so McCaffrey has to cut it
01:34up inside.
01:35How much of the Kittle factor is kind of leading into what you're talking about in the outside
01:40zone?
01:40I mean, it's huge.
01:43I mean, there was about four or five times where it's not just Tonjes, it's the other
01:46tight end, and a couple times with the receivers.
01:49I mean, especially when you're running outside zone so often, those guys are so important
01:57to the success of that offense, and I think the big thing is shining of what Kittle brings
02:04to this offense.
02:06John Feliciano's with us.
02:07Okay, we've got to play this for you.
02:09Need for you to react to this, because Richard Sherman on the Richard Sherman podcast, I mean,
02:14it's no not-our-fault podcast, but it is Richard Sherman's, and this is what he said about the
02:21current 49er O-line play, and we'd love to get your reaction.
02:24Here it is.
02:25The interior offensive line was the issue late in the game, and again, I knew that would
02:30be the Achilles heel for this team, but it's not just on the passing play.
02:33It's not just from the pass protection standpoint.
02:36It's ridiculous on plays that are set up successfully.
02:40Plays that are set up successfully, you've got guys in space.
02:42All you've got to do is block your guy, block your guy, get in the way, Christian McCaffrey,
02:46let him do his work, and you can't even do that, and that's where it's starting to become
02:49devastating to this offense, because you can draw up the perfect play, but if you have
02:54guys that are incompetent, unable to get the job done, unable to block people, unable to
03:00block linebackers, then you can't run these plays, and you should be able to expect your
03:04center and your guards to be able to get out in space and get up on a, you know, Levante David
03:08is an incredible player, all pro, pro bowl, you know, big time guy, been playing for a
03:13long time.
03:13I've got a ton of respect for him, but you should be able to at least be able to get in
03:16his way.
03:17He shouldn't be able to shock shit and tackle Christian McCaffrey right where they were,
03:22and I think that's happened throughout the season on plays that are drawn up well, and
03:26we're looking at the center, get up on guys, and just with.
03:29And there's more where he points directly at Jake Brendel and says, I don't want to blame
03:35one guy, but.
03:37What's your take on what he's saying here, John?
03:44I'm guessing he's talking about that screenplay that Jake doesn't touch.
03:48I think it was Levante David.
03:50Yep.
03:50But that play is drawn up to go outside, so Jake's blocking it like it's, like Christian's
03:56going to go on the outside, Christian goes inside because, you know, Christian's the
04:00man.
04:01He knows what, you know, he can make a play anywhere.
04:04Unfortunately, he didn't make the play there, so Jake's kind of sitting there with his pants
04:08on his ankles when thinking, he's thinking, you know, the play's going outside and it cuts
04:14in.
04:16Pune didn't play a great game.
04:18I think Pune, that injury has really been messing with him.
04:21Um, and like I've, I've been saying over the last, you know, few weeks that, you know,
04:27Connor's doing, I think he played a better game this week than he has the previous two,
04:32but, you know, I, he's, he's a young guy that, you know, he's trying his best.
04:39Um, I think hopefully Bartz gets back soon and I think that's going to help the offense
04:43line a lot.
04:44And hopefully Pune keeps getting healthy, healthier so he can get back to what he was doing last
04:49year.
04:49Is that really the fix is, you know, you're hoping that Bartz gets back and gets healthy
04:54because Mark and I were joking earlier, like as a coach, you just say, all right, get better.
04:59All you, all you guys just, just get better.
05:01Are there things schematically that the Niners can do to try to use as a workaround for these
05:06guys who maybe are either injured or just aren't quite playing well enough?
05:11Um, no, man, it's kind of just got to man up.
05:15Um, one other point he was talking about is the sacks.
05:19Um, I mean, they, we gave up six sacks.
05:22Uh, I think two of them were not on the offensive line.
05:26Um, Ton just was supposed to chip the, the guy where, when Colton gave up that sack, he
05:32doesn't chip them.
05:33Um, and then, you know, Trent gave up a sack.
05:38Um, so that's four.
05:39And then the other two were just, you know, we got our ass kicked on too.
05:44Um, so, uh, it's, I've watched it again.
05:50I watched it two or three times now.
05:52Um, they're not playing as bad as everyone's saying, but I think it, um, magnifies when
06:01you lose and you can't run the ball.
06:05Um, there was a second and 10 play when Ton just catches the screen.
06:09Uh, it was late in the game, uh, and he runs right to the linebacker.
06:15I don't know why he isn't, doesn't follow the blockers, but we get the third and one and
06:19then we don't get the third and one.
06:22And then, then the fourth down played Booney jumps all sides.
06:25So like it's, uh, we were right there.
06:28Um, unfortunately those little things happened and we didn't win the game.
06:33Vitavia picked up Dominic Booney, laid him down gently like a toddler and then trampled over
06:39him.
06:39Is that the worst possible moment for an offensive guard?
06:44Yeah.
06:45And people, my thing, I love, I love the fans and I love the love that I'm getting and people
06:50are asking me to come back.
06:52But as soon as I saw that for Booney, first thing I did was go to 2023.
06:57We were back.
06:58It was a two minute drive.
07:00We were backed up and guess what happened?
07:04Vitavia put me on my ass.
07:06The same thing.
07:06Uh, it just happened to be BA caught a big pass and ran, ran for like 30 yards.
07:12Um, but I send it to Booney as a, Hey man, pimps go through this shit from time to time.
07:22It's okay, John.
07:23No, John, we, uh, yeah, we promise our YouTube audience that they're going to get a couple
07:28of those.
07:28So it's fine.
07:29It's fine.
07:30Yeah.
07:30Yeah.
07:31I thought I was allowed to say that one.
07:32No, no, no.
07:33Not that.
07:34Oh yeah.
07:35No, you can say the first word.
07:36You can't say the second word, John.
07:39Yeah.
07:40Oh, okay.
07:42We're learning.
07:42Yeah.
07:43Well, I mean, Vitavia has got to be 370.
07:46I'm like, you're no, you're no small potatoes, but that's, that's a big man now.
07:50Yeah.
07:51And, uh, yeah, and he's still got it.
07:53I don't know.
07:55I don't know what people were thinking.
07:58Um, but Vitavia is still elite.
08:01Hey, uh, John Feliciano with us as he is every Tuesday.
08:05Can we back up and get a comment on what this, I mean, you've been a teammate of his.
08:10What does it mean emotionally to this team to lose Fred Warner?
08:14Uh, man, it's rough.
08:20Um, you know, once when Bosa goes down, you kind of all the, the leadership of that defense
08:29all falls on, on, on Fred.
08:32Um, and then when you lose, lose him, it's, it's like a gut punch.
08:38Uh, a great, great teammate, a great player and a guy that, um, uh, he just loves ball
08:46and he, his, his enthusiasm is just bleeds onto the team.
08:51Um, and that, that is a big loss.
08:55And what's that like on even both sides of the field, obviously, because as an offensive
09:00player, you're not in the huddle with him, but just having a player of that stature go
09:05down, does it cast a pall over the entire game?
09:08And how do you as a player try to shake that off and still get out there and play three
09:12more quarters of football?
09:15Yeah.
09:16I mean, you, you try not to think about it.
09:18Um, but like, you know, whenever you need to play and we, you know, the offense is on
09:24the sideline watching the defense, you're always like, where's 54?
09:28Cause Fred's going to make that play for you.
09:30Um, but now with him being gone, um, you look to D winners who I think is to be a phenomenal
09:37linebacker.
09:38Um, I think he's in a keep going and they're going to have a deadly, uh, combo with, with
09:45Fred and D for, for hopefully a long time.
09:49Um, but yeah, it's, uh, it's going to be hard to replace Fred.
09:56Uh, John Feliciano is with us, John, uh, especially because of your affinity for the
10:02bills and the fact that they played Atlanta last night and that's the 49ers next opponent
10:07as well.
10:08Give us a little X's and O's breakdown on what you saw them do to Josh last night that, that
10:14it is now waiting for the 49ers in five days.
10:18Yeah, man.
10:18It's been a tough couple of days for me, man.
10:21Yeah.
10:22Yeah.
10:22It's just a losing, I thought, I thought Buffalo versus Atlanta was a shoe in, um, but
10:29obviously it wasn't the case.
10:31Um, that D line kind of got after, uh, the bills O line.
10:36Um, and they did a great job of running the ball.
10:41So we gotta, we gotta make sure, you know, D line and, and, and, and D linebackers need
10:47to, need to make sure they don't run the ball and keep the ball away from, from, from the
10:51Niners.
10:51Well, I mean, it's just B. John Robinson.
10:53So no big deal, right?
10:55It's kind of Christian's fault.
10:57Then they trained together in the off season.
10:59So, I mean, thanks a lot, Christian.
11:01Look, he got a lot better and now, now you got to play him.
11:04How much does coming off the buy really help a team?
11:07Like, well, any team really, but the Falcons go into that one last night coming off a buy
11:12and they're at home.
11:13How big of a deal is that even this early in the season?
11:16Um, yeah, you kind of hate having it this early.
11:21Um, just cause you would, I mean, a week, like 10 by week is kind of like the premium
11:26for me.
11:27Um, but yeah, obviously the coaches, the coaches do a lot of self-scouting on by week.
11:33So I'm guessing that the, the, the Falcons coaches really took a hard look at themselves
11:38and, um, they, they looked like an elite team last, last night.
11:41So, um, hopefully they, uh, suck next week.
11:46Um, yeah, exactly.
11:47Yeah.
11:48John, um, a quick pivot.
11:50We'll get back to 49ers, but did you, uh, deliver Ambien to your entire family?
11:55I've never heard your house.
11:56So quiet.
11:57What's yeah.
11:58What's going on?
11:59I put my, I put my foot down.
12:01I said, wife, get this in order.
12:04Yeah.
12:06No, was there, was there, was there an actual conversation?
12:09Yeah.
12:11And I said, Hey, put these kids to bed earlier.
12:16What time zone are you in right now?
12:19Eastern.
12:19Yeah.
12:20Showered, bathed.
12:21Yeah.
12:21They brushed their teeth.
12:23They're there.
12:24My wife's up there now, keeping them quiet, making sure they go to bed.
12:27Is she reading them the classic, uh, go the blank to sleep as a story?
12:34No, I think she's choking them out.
12:39Also a bedtime technique.
12:42Well, that's better.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Thank goodness for that.
12:45That makes everybody feel so much better.
12:48A little guillotine.
12:50A little, you know, reverse.
12:53Jiu-jitsu stuff.
12:54Yeah.
12:56Just helping them out.
12:57Mild threats.
12:58Not like, you know, major ones.
13:01Yeah, no.
13:02Okay.
13:03Perfect.
13:03All right.
13:04John Feliciano's with us.
13:05Okay.
13:05Hey, can we go bigger picture and, and like they're foreign to all right.
13:10That's great.
13:11We can also see that, man, it was razor thin.
13:15There seem to be losing stars every week.
13:17I know some guys are coming back, but like, I don't know, John, like how, how realistic
13:23are the long-term thoughts?
13:26And I mean that just this season for, for this team, considering everything that has
13:31happened.
13:35I don't know, man.
13:36You like, you, obviously with the, with all the injuries, you, you, you kind of get scared
13:40and, you know, kind of want to just chalk the season up.
13:44But I mean, I think the, the Bucs are one of the best teams in the league.
13:48They're a player two away from being undefeated right now.
13:52Every game goes down to the wire and they, they, they know how to finish a game.
13:55Um, with us, I, with all these injuries, somehow we keep pulling games off.
14:03Um, I think that's a credit to the players that are playing and to the coaches.
14:08Um, I don't know.
14:10I don't know if I'm just a homer or what, but I still, I still see all their goals right
14:16in front of them.
14:17Um, I, I think, uh, hopefully BA gets healthy here soon, get them back in a few weeks.
14:23Uh, he'll be a giant help.
14:26Um, I'm sure, I'm sure John and Kyle are going to look into some kind of trade or something
14:31during the trade deadline.
14:32So, um, I'm, I'm, I'm actually excited to see what's going to happen in the next few
14:36weeks.
14:36Yeah.
14:37Like I, I wonder if you can put a name on some of those things.
14:40Like if you want to be optimistic, I get it.
14:43There's a long way to go and a lot can still happen.
14:45But if you were to name specifically three or four things that need to happen for the
14:52rest of the season to go, well, what would you say?
14:58Health.
14:59Um, we got to trade for a, a defensive piece, either linebacker or DN and, um, keep get some
15:11of our guys back, man.
15:12Those are the only thing I think once we get barge and BA and Ricky, all our Brock, all
15:19our guys back, I think we'll be all right in the locker room.
15:23Is this something that players openly talk about?
15:25Like you've lost both.
15:26So you lost Fred Warner.
15:27Do you talk amongst yourselves about how you, you want to add a piece or is that just something
15:32that now you're a media star you think more about?
15:36No.
15:36Yeah.
15:36It's definitely now that I'm a media star when you're in the locker room, you try to
15:39be like, Oh yeah, we're good.
15:41We, we got everyone we need in this locker room.
15:44Um, but obviously it helps when, when, when, I mean, when we got Randy Gregory, my 2023 year,
15:51I thought that was a big, uh, uh, get, I think I thought he played well for us.
15:55Um, but it's always nice.
15:57It's, you know, you hear, I mean, Randy has a, he had a pretty big name at the time of,
16:01of a pass rusher kind of guy.
16:03Um, so like, well, if you get a guy with like a big name or just someone that is respected
16:09around the league, that, that always helps with the morale.
16:12Hey John, as an offensive lineman, and I know you didn't get to play with, with Mack Jones,
16:16you've played with Brock Purdy, but how different of a job is that blocking for those two guys?
16:23Because Brock is so much more mobile.
16:24Yeah. Um, Brock will definitely help you out in, uh, if you get beat or, uh, things are not looking
16:33so good, you know, that he could, uh, kind of weasel his way out of there.
16:37Uh, with Mack, the positive is you always know where Mack's going to be because he's going to be
16:42in the pocket. Um, so, uh, I mean, I think he's been playing well, obviously he kind of,
16:48you know, he had a bad pick in the first or second series. Um, but besides that, uh, I thought
16:56he's been playing well.
16:57Hey John, I was wondering about offensive linemen and slumps. I know Dominic Pooney is injured,
17:02but I can't get beyond the mental part of it where, you know, he false started on that fourth
17:08and one to me, that wasn't injury based as an offensive lineman. Can you go through a slump?
17:13Oh yeah. A hundred percent. And, um, I think he's definitely going through that right now.
17:21So it's the seltzer water, dude. Came out of nowhere. Let it ride. I'm drinking the sparkles
17:27right now too, man. The same thing happens, John. So yeah, belch away, dude. It's all good.
17:34Yeah. I think that, uh, Pooney's definitely going through a slump. It's, it's very mental. Um,
17:38obviously physical as well with the injury, but, um, he is, uh, when you, when you get in those
17:44slumps, man, you just really, you're trying to dig your way out so bad and you want to get out so
17:48bad that you actually go deeper in. Um, so, uh, you know, if they need someone to come out there
17:54and get in his head and help them out, this, you know, that minimum is not that expensive.
17:59Okay. There it is. John, what is, what do you see as your role right now? You're, I mean,
18:05is it just like, are you, are you in contact with any of the guys? Uh, yeah. I mean, not front
18:13office wise, a lot of the players I still talk to. Okay. Like, yeah. Do you have any conversations
18:18with these guys over the last week? Yeah. I mean, uh, I mean, Bosa, McCaffrey, I mean, all the
18:28linemen, um, I'm like, they're my guys, man. Uh, I'm always sending them inappropriate videos on
18:37Instagram. Um, um, um, and, uh, you know, uh, reach me and Poonie talked a little bit, especially
18:46after the Vita Veya thing, just, you know, cause I, I know how he feels. He's, he's, he's down right
18:53now and man, like he has what 12 more games to play, whatever it is. Like, buddy, you
19:00got, you got plenty of time to turn this season around. No one's even going to remember the
19:05first six weeks. Yeah. What'd you say to him? Exactly. I sent him, uh, I sent him a video
19:15of me getting ran over by, uh, Vita Veya. And I just, uh, you know, pimps go through this
19:21kind of stuff, man. It's all right. I'm going to have to Google that here, John. I'm going
19:25to have to see that for my own, uh, bemusement just, you know, cause Vita Veya is a monster.
19:31I'll send you guys right now. It's, um, it didn't feel good. I'll tell you, I'll tell you
19:35that, right? It was, uh, you know, I, I, he tricked me and it's my dumb, it's my fault
19:45for even falling for it. Cause he's not going outside. Like he's like, he's quick for his size,
19:50but he's not going to beat you outside. So, uh, he kind of made like a, oh, wait, I think
19:55I said the freaking wrong thing. Uh, did you just send it to Christian McCaffrey?
20:02No, no. Um, no, shoot. Um, um, Vita was acting like he was going outside and I fell for it.
20:17And then he just went straight down my neck and blew me up. Um, but like I said, we got
20:23the ball out and it was a big play. So, uh, no one remembers that, but it happened. It
20:29definitely happened here. I got it. Now I sent it to the, um, sorry, I forgot his name.
20:34The guy that always texted me the freaking link, my guy, you said to Lucas, Lucas, Lucas,
20:41Lucas, Lucas isn't even here today. So now we're like, yeah, I know days off on a Tuesday.
20:52What are we doing? What are we doing? I'm here once a week, Luke. I'm here once a week,
20:57Lucas, send it, send it over. Yeah. All right. We'll get it from him. And we need like,
21:02we'll go through Luke. You need to be able to send it directly to us, John.
21:06Um, yeah, that's, that's, that's my bad. All right. Put your, put your number, put your
21:10number in the YouTube chat right now and then we'll, we'll text you.
21:18All right. I'll take that as a no. Oh man. I'll send it to dibs. I did. I'll send it to you
21:26on Twitter. I appreciate that. Yeah. I'll share. We go. We'll, we'll do it. We'll DM, we'll
21:31DM some, uh, some mobile numbers. I'm always bugging Mongo, uh, in the Twitter DMs just to
21:36try to make sure he's agitated for the segment. Got to keep you, got to keep you on edge, Mongo.
21:41Hey, your boy, um, Lawrence played great last week, huh? Uh, not so sparkly. No, I mean,
21:47he's a work in progress. It's a week to week league now, John. We're taking it one game at a time,
21:52right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right. All right. At least my guy's able to get out there
22:01and answer the bell every week. Yeah. All right. Yeah. Half the year last year. Well,
22:07Hey, Hey John, yeah. Boom. Hey, Hey, Sunday night football. Uh, give me from a player's
22:16perspective. Cause I know you guys is still like that, right? That primetime thing. The
22:21lights are on. How do you like, I don't know what is the preparation different? Is the thought
22:26process different when Sunday night football is coming to your building?
22:32Uh, man, it's a Sunday, Monday are, are the best times to play Sunday night football,
22:39Monday night football. It's a, it's a different feeling. Um, you have all the extra trucks there,
22:44the camera trucks. Um, Sunday's way better cause you get to kind of watch all the other games,
22:51uh, especially the one o'clock games. By the time the other games are on, you're kind
22:55of on the way to the stadium. Um, but Monday's kind of sucks as you're just sitting around
23:00all day. Yep. Uh, so, and you also lose time on the, on the next week. So Sunday night football
23:06is kind of the best, especially if you're at home, nothing, nothing beats Sunday night
23:10football. Yeah. Does that people always say that? And I don't think fans really give it
23:13a lot of credence, but like that short week thing, like, does that help the 49ers this
23:18week that the Falcons are on the short week? That's a hope. I hope, I hope they don't
23:24feel good. I hope they're injured and they got a limp onto the field on Sunday night. Um,
23:32all right, man, go, uh, go read good night moon to your kids. Yeah. I don't do much of
23:39the reading. Okay. Me neither. Me neither, John. All right, buddy. We'll talk to you next
23:45week. There he goes. John Feliciano.
