Is the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge a ghost story or is it all in his head?
Yvonne Chadwell sees it very much as psychology as she directs HAODS’ production of Scrooge: The Musical as their autumn show at the Horsham Capitol from Tuesday 28th–Friday 31st October at 7.30pm and on Saturday 1st November at 2pm and 7pm.

00:00thank you good morning my name is phil hewitt group arts editor at sussex newspapers lovely
00:06to speak again to yvonne chadwell now yvonne you are directing your choreographing hey odds in
00:11horsham with scrooge the musical notes at the horsham capital the 28th to the 31st of october
00:19this is a christmas november and the first of november sorry the saturday you've got the matinee
00:25and the evening on saturday's person in november now this is a christmas show for halloween isn't
00:30it this time now why is it such a great story why do we come back to this every single year this story
00:40uh i think because it's a very well written um piece dickens uh is a consummate storyteller
00:47um it has lots of different sort of characters and nuances
00:52um it sits in halloween because um of the visiting of the three ghosts yeah um and um sits beyond
01:01halloween because it's about christmas so it has that lovely sort of mixture um of reflection but
01:09also deep joy um especially as scrooge comes to the end and no spoilers but he does actually find
01:16that life is good fun at the end of uh his evening yeah now we were just talking about the fact that
01:23for every person who thinks this is a ghost story there are people who will insist it's purely
01:28psychological and you know which camp you're in you don't see it's a ghost story do you
01:33no it's it's um it's scrooge sitting and reflecting on his life and uh there comes a time where we all
01:41sit down and over in his uh instance it's a cup of soup um but looking at you know what's what's
01:48happened that's good what's happened that's bad and trying to understand if things need to stay the
01:54same or move and the wonderful way that sort of dickens created this is he uses the the ghosts as that um
02:03um journey yeah into what might be um so in the musical he having met marley and who starts
02:11everything off and marley's not just shaking of chains but he's quite a fun character as well
02:17um and then his um the first ghost is his sister um and she takes him back to his early life when
02:25actually he was enjoying life to some extent not all the time he went away to school and obviously
02:31he didn't enjoy it too much but then was went to the fezzy weeks and learnt that life could be better
02:37was about to get married um and that's when things started to turn i think for scrooge having every
02:45time he goes back and reflects in himself he goes could i have done something differently so there's a
02:52point where isabel uh having weighed the ring that he's been he's given her against coins um she then goes
03:00to leave and scrooge goes stop don't do any and his counterpart goes i can't so an awful lot of
03:09this is what can we do to change if there are things that we don't like about uh what's happening
03:18and it's significant too that you're not doing christmas carol you're even wearing the hoodie
03:23you're doing scrooge yeah what's it so this is scrooge the musical not the straight play the
03:29straight story so it's it's got some extra characters in it it's obvious to create a
03:34musical they create the musical numbers i think the one of the big numbers that everybody will
03:38probably know is thank you very much when they dance on scrooge's coffin um that's led by a lead a
03:45second lead um who is the soup seller and he's what the person that scrooge could have been he's full of
03:52life full of joy dances has a load of fun as he's going through life and they do the song together
03:58because in the musical scrooge is dancing on the coffin thinking that they all love him and actually
04:04they're all saying thank you very much for dying um which scrooge doesn't get uh so that fun pieces
04:11there uh the the christmas pieces there we've got lovely sort of caroling type songs um in in there
04:19but then scrooge has some reflective ones as well you know about what is life and what does he want
04:24from his life as he comes to the end we have a massive um end finale um and in the middle of that
04:32he gets visited by the three past of his ways past his present in his potential future um i think the other
04:40ghosts that people will know really well is the ghost of the present who's a big jolly giant you know
04:46likes drinking and eating and everything um and is is lots of fun so this is not a scary ghost story
04:53it's a reflection of life um and the fact that we can change it if we really want to fantastic well
05:00it sounds a lovely prospect is hey odds screws scrooge musical horsham capsule tuesday 28th of
05:08october to saturday november the 1st ivan lovely to speak to you have a great time thank you thank you phil
05:14thank you for your time
