00:00
Luke here at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and I'm deep in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.
00:04
And for the next four days, I'm building my shelters, camping, catching my dinner, exploring glaciers, and having a great time.
00:11
Come along for the ride. It's going to be a great video.
00:30
And there goes my ride.
00:48
Well, I'm going to leave the kayak here and go look for a campsite.
01:15
I think the first thing I'm going to do is explore a little bit.
01:19
Well, there's plenty of wood.
01:23
Looks like a coyote's been walking up and down this beach.
01:29
Keep finding tons of these little skeletons.
01:31
They feel really light, like they belong to a bird.
01:37
Little sea urchin.
01:40
It's a fish jaw. Look at all those teeth.
01:45
That's the top half of a beaver jaw.
01:48
Look what I just found.
01:54
Those are bear paw prints right there.
01:56
Not sure what kind of bear it is, but this is where I want to build my campsite.
02:00
Well, I walked about two miles of round trip down the beach looking for a spring or creek.
02:04
Didn't find anything.
02:06
I've got about four liters of water and that's enough for today and tomorrow.
02:09
But probably not enough for all four days.
02:11
But right now, I've got to focus on building a shelter.
02:14
It's getting late.
02:15
We'll be getting late.
02:16
That's fine.
02:21
Here's the trail done.
02:22
The real part is what allowed us to do about this one for in the second one.
02:24
This is about moving against a number of miles of miles of miles of miles of miles of miles.
02:29
It's always found a lot as far as took off the long.
02:30
The next wrap offers...
02:32
No, it's very simple.
02:34
Except for tables, I don't care about people.
02:37
It does take about multiple miles of miles.
02:38
It has a perfect kind of wood.
02:40
And it's going to open for us all the areas.
02:42
then cut the paper and cut the paper and cut the paper.
02:49
You can just shoot me on the right side.
02:51
It's time to do a really good hunt!
02:54
Let's do a little sixteen!
02:55
That's right.
02:57
And so I'm gonna find a little bit more.
02:59
I'll show you how to figure out how it is.
03:01
This is a nice woman.
03:02
We'll see what is happening here,
03:04
how to manage that.
03:05
It's so beautiful.
03:05
Look at the right side.
03:07
Look at my eyes.
03:08
And here's our eyes.
03:10
Now that we're going to make a day at this time,
03:11
you should have to take a day at the end.
03:13
I'm really grateful for that.
03:14
I'm really thankful for this.
03:16
So, let's go.
03:46
So, let's go.
04:16
all right i got camp set up and not a moment too soon it's getting dark
04:29
with the rocks behind the fire and the canvas behind me this is really toasty which is good
04:43
because it's gotten chilly outside i could see my breath i knew i'd be getting to this spot kind
04:47
of late so i packed a pretty simple meal i got some uh got some cured salami and i got some smoked
04:55
salmon and pilot bread i caught some silver salmon a couple weeks ago and i smoked them up
04:59
and then i mixed the smoked salmon in with brie honey walnuts and garlic
05:03
for dessert i have chocolate covered macadamia nuts
05:12
got myself some blisters right there and there
05:22
it's late and i've got a lot to do tomorrow i'm gonna put up the camera
05:29
hopefully we won't have any bears joining us tonight see you guys in the morning
05:33
oh good morning it's cold outside
05:41
oh that's gorgeous well before i get the fire started and i start cooking breakfast i think
05:52
i want to complete the firing
06:06
i need to find a couple perfectly shaped stones
06:34
oh that one's promising
06:38
that one's promising
06:42
Oh, my God.
07:12
I wouldn't mind another one of those.
07:34
I'm sitting here finishing breakfast, and I can see a flock of seagulls diving on baitfish right there.
07:42
Maybe I need to rig up the rod.
08:01
Just checking my bait, and I reeled in a flesh-eating starfish.
08:05
I'm going to go put him back.
08:12
That's an eagle feather.
08:24
That's from a young bald eagle.
08:26
Well, the surf fishing wasn't really paying off, and we've got a few hours before high tide,
08:31
so I'm hiking back to the kayak to see if we can go do some kayak fishing.
08:35
While I'm at it, I want to keep an eye out for a water source.
08:38
I've only got about a liter and a half of fresh water left, so I've got to go look for water.
08:42
Tell you what, I was just thinking I wish I had a hat.
08:51
I hope there's not lice in it.
08:54
Check out the bald eagle up there.
08:56
Those are such a big bird.
09:00
All right, we've got some water.
09:07
That's brackish.
09:12
There's definitely a fair amount of salt water in that.
09:15
So this right here is a tidal river.
09:17
It changes direction based on whether the tide's coming in or out.
09:21
So I think I'm going to put my kayak in and catch a ride out into the bay.
09:24
See if we can't catch some fish.
09:26
Ugh!
09:27
I'm going to stop and do a little bit of lunch before I get on the kayak.
09:36
Ling-hee-mooey covered mango.
09:38
Mmm.
09:55
We let the current take me down the river.
09:57
We'll fish a little bit in the lagoon.
09:59
When the tide switches, we'll catch the current back.
10:02
Sure nice not having to paddle.
10:05
But I'm hearing an ominous roaring noise down that direction.
10:17
We got some pretty serious breakers here.
10:19
But if I flip over in this, I'm going to go hypothermic immediately.
10:23
I mean, there's literally ice washing up on the beach.
10:26
This water is so cold, it hurts to put your hand in it.
10:29
But I've been sitting here for a few minutes and I haven't seen any breakers off to the left.
10:33
So I think that's the trick.
10:38
Oh, crap.
10:46
Oh, that was a lot crazier than I intended.
10:49
I may not be going back that way.
10:51
Oh, this iceberg is making crazy noises.
11:01
It sounds like it's being deep fried.
11:03
The ocean water is about 40, 45 degrees.
11:06
And so it's substantially warmer than the ice.
11:08
Oh, that is cool.
11:10
I want to see if I can catch myself a fish for dinner.
11:14
And usually the fishing's better when you're fishing underneath cliffs as opposed to beach.
11:25
Oh, hello.
11:26
Look at this.
11:27
It's a little baby salmon.
11:31
I think that's a little baby silver.
11:33
Won't fill me up, but he'll taste just fine.
11:35
We'll keep him.
11:40
Oh, look at this.
11:41
Kelp greenling.
11:42
Nice little kelp greenling.
11:45
Oh, there we go.
11:48
Oh, little baby kelp greenling.
11:55
Another kelp greenling.
11:58
Kelp greenling aren't horrible, but I like other fish better and I think I'm going to catch something.
12:03
Oh, got something.
12:06
Oh, yeah.
12:09
That is what we want.
12:12
There we go.
12:13
Look at that black bass.
12:15
Where there's one of those, there's usually more.
12:18
Oh, oh, we got a big one.
12:20
We got a nice fish.
12:24
Oh, look at that.
12:28
I believe this is a copper rock fish.
12:30
I'm going to go ahead and put him back.
12:33
You're only allowed to keep one of those per day.
12:37
Oh, there we go.
12:39
Oh, another black bass.
12:41
You allowed three of these per day, but I'm not going to eat both of these suckers.
12:45
I got enough food.
12:47
Oh, there we go.
12:49
Oh, look at that beauty.
12:52
What a feisty fish.
12:53
Little puffins swimming right by me over there.
12:59
Oh, another black bass.
13:02
I could have limited out.
13:05
There we go.
13:09
Another big black bass.
13:11
Well, the fishing's been pretty awesome.
13:12
I've got dinner and I've lost count of how many fish I caught, but I'm getting thirsty and water's getting really low.
13:24
I need to go find a source of drinking water.
13:26
I'm so glad to see this water.
13:42
That is all the water we had left.
13:49
This is the best water filter system.
13:51
It just pulls it through with gravity.
13:53
I got four liters of drinking water and three liters I can filter later.
14:01
Oh, that feels good to have water.
14:03
I was stressing about that.
14:10
Dang, some of those waves are popping up six feet tall.
14:17
I'm just going to porridge the kayak over this little spit of land over here.
14:20
That way I can avoid all that craziness over there.
14:29
There we go.
14:30
We're back in the river and we're rapidly moving the opposite direction we were a few hours ago.
14:35
Man, that current is ripping.
14:38
If I were to stay on this river, it would take me to a lake full of icebergs and an enormous glacier that's calving into the lake.
14:44
I really want to go see that, but that'll have to wait for tomorrow.
14:48
Oh, son of a gun.
14:49
Well, that wasn't great.
14:50
Well, there we go.
14:55
We caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
14:59
Oh.
15:02
There we go.
15:03
Ah, son of a gun.
15:05
Well, that wasn't great.
15:10
Well, there we go.
15:11
We caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
15:13
There we go, we caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
15:25
It was a little cold last night
15:27
and it's supposed to get even colder as the week goes on.
15:30
So I'm gonna bust out my stove.
15:43
All right, I think it's time to cook some fish.
16:02
And a little bit of maple syrup.
16:08
There we go, put it in the smoke but out of the heat.
16:12
Got a little bread flour in the east here.
16:42
Walking miles on those rocks with these boots has just been killing my feet.
16:54
That is some beautiful fillets right there.
17:06
A little pepper, smoked paprika.
17:18
Ticket and mole here.
17:22
There we go.
17:24
There we go.
17:26
A little pepper, smoked paprika.
17:30
Ticket and mole here.
17:34
Green hatch chilies.
17:46
And lots of rockfish.
17:48
Some salsa.
17:49
Rockfish is such a firm white meat.
17:52
Mmm.
17:53
Really good.
17:54
Oh, that was good.
17:55
Oh, that was good.
17:56
Oh, that was good.
18:01
For dessert, I'm going to finish off my bread with a little bit of honey.
18:02
I don't know what it is, but I'm going to finish off my bread with a little bit of honey.
18:06
I don't know what it is, but there are a few things better than warm bread and honey.
18:34
Oh, that was good.
18:46
I will see you guys in the morning.
18:50
Good morning.
18:57
Putting this stove in last night was the best idea ever.
19:01
It's so tasty in here.
19:04
Oh, pancakes are hard to beat.
19:32
I guess, technically, this is breakfast in bed.
19:36
Nice.
19:41
There you go.
19:56
My smoked salmon's done.
20:03
It's tiny, but good.
20:06
Well, despite the weather, I really want to go see that glacier.
20:09
This is a bald eagle's footprint.
20:15
Look at the size comparison to my hand.
20:19
From one talon to the other, that's probably eight inches.
20:22
Oh, darn, I missed the tide.
20:28
It's heading the wrong way.
20:30
I might be able to get up against the current.
20:32
We'll see.
20:38
In the middle of the river, the current's moving faster than I can paddle.
20:41
But maybe if I stick to the sides, I can sneak upstream.
20:45
Oh, my hands are so cold.
20:57
All right.
20:59
Check out that eagle.
21:00
A bunch of pink salmon right there.
21:08
Look at that.
21:08
I think I made it to the lake that feeds the river.
21:22
Now, it's hard to see with all this fog, but there's an enormous glacier falling into this lake somewhere over there.
21:28
I just got to see if I can find a way through all this ice.
21:32
Oh, that'll buff out.
21:34
I got to be careful going in between these icebergs.
21:36
Some of these weigh more than buildings.
21:38
And as the tide goes up and down, they're going to shift and move around.
21:42
This clear water can disappear.
21:44
Or worse yet, you can get squished in between two big icebergs.
21:57
This place is just full of seals and sea otters.
22:11
I've seen like 20 of them.
22:15
This ice pack goes on forever.
22:17
Ice that comes from the bottom of the glacier is super compressed and has that really cool blue color.
22:34
The fog lifted and I can see the face of the glacier.
22:37
The tide switches in about an hour and a half.
22:40
And it's taken me three hours to get here.
22:42
So, I better get heading back.
22:47
I know I'm hungry when I'm double fisting it.
23:17
Oh, that kayaking wore me out.
23:26
That was about five hours.
23:33
Well, it's almost dinner time and I got some bread dough left over.
23:42
So, I think I'm going to make a bushcraft bread oven.
23:47
Got the oven stuffed full of wood.
24:05
Got the dough rising in the pot.
24:07
Just stick it over here and let it rest.
24:29
Ah-ha!
24:33
There we go.
24:36
Is there anything better than warm, fresh bread?
24:39
Yes!
24:39
Warm, fresh bread with honey butter.
24:41
Oh, that was so good.
24:53
Oh, the crust is so crispy on this thing.
24:56
Mmm.
24:56
Oh, I'm getting so full.
25:04
I've got a belly full of warm bread and it's nice and cozy in here.
25:08
I'm going to just kind of take it easy.
25:10
I'm sore after all that kayaking.
25:12
There we go.
25:34
Nice little wooden spoon.
25:36
Well, I think I made a little bit of a mess here.
25:52
It's been a fun, relaxing evening, but I've got to get to bed.
25:55
I've got to get up early in the morning.
25:57
I'll see you guys then.
25:58
Oh, good morning.
26:05
I've got to hurry up and get packed.
26:28
I hate packing up in the rain.
26:34
All of my gear is soaked and dirty.
26:52
Now I've just got to wait for my ride.
26:55
Look at that.
26:55
There's a whole bunch of seals right out there trying to catch pink salmon.
26:58
Oh, there's my boat.
27:08
Whoa.
27:09
I don't need my shower for the month now.
27:13
Yeah, you know, keep going.
27:15
