00:00Luke here at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and I'm deep in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.
00:04And for the next four days, I'm building my shelters, camping, catching my dinner, exploring glaciers, and having a great time.
00:11Come along for the ride. It's going to be a great video.
00:30And there goes my ride.
00:48Well, I'm going to leave the kayak here and go look for a campsite.
01:15I think the first thing I'm going to do is explore a little bit.
01:19Well, there's plenty of wood.
01:23Looks like a coyote's been walking up and down this beach.
01:29Keep finding tons of these little skeletons.
01:31They feel really light, like they belong to a bird.
01:37Little sea urchin.
01:40It's a fish jaw. Look at all those teeth.
01:45That's the top half of a beaver jaw.
01:48Look what I just found.
01:54Those are bear paw prints right there.
01:56Not sure what kind of bear it is, but this is where I want to build my campsite.
02:00Well, I walked about two miles of round trip down the beach looking for a spring or creek.
02:04Didn't find anything.
02:06I've got about four liters of water and that's enough for today and tomorrow.
02:09But probably not enough for all four days.
02:11But right now, I've got to focus on building a shelter.
02:14It's getting late.
02:15We'll be getting late.
02:16That's fine.
02:21Here's the trail done.
02:22The real part is what allowed us to do about this one for in the second one.
02:24This is about moving against a number of miles of miles of miles of miles of miles of miles.
02:29It's always found a lot as far as took off the long.
02:30The next wrap offers...
02:32No, it's very simple.
02:34Except for tables, I don't care about people.
02:37It does take about multiple miles of miles.
02:38It has a perfect kind of wood.
02:40And it's going to open for us all the areas.
02:42then cut the paper and cut the paper and cut the paper.
02:49You can just shoot me on the right side.
02:51It's time to do a really good hunt!
02:54Let's do a little sixteen!
02:55That's right.
02:57And so I'm gonna find a little bit more.
02:59I'll show you how to figure out how it is.
03:01This is a nice woman.
03:02We'll see what is happening here,
03:04how to manage that.
03:05It's so beautiful.
03:05Look at the right side.
03:07Look at my eyes.
03:08And here's our eyes.
03:10Now that we're going to make a day at this time,
03:11you should have to take a day at the end.
03:13I'm really grateful for that.
03:14I'm really thankful for this.
03:16So, let's go.
03:46So, let's go.
04:16all right i got camp set up and not a moment too soon it's getting dark
04:29with the rocks behind the fire and the canvas behind me this is really toasty which is good
04:43because it's gotten chilly outside i could see my breath i knew i'd be getting to this spot kind
04:47of late so i packed a pretty simple meal i got some uh got some cured salami and i got some smoked
04:55salmon and pilot bread i caught some silver salmon a couple weeks ago and i smoked them up
04:59and then i mixed the smoked salmon in with brie honey walnuts and garlic
05:03for dessert i have chocolate covered macadamia nuts
05:12got myself some blisters right there and there
05:22it's late and i've got a lot to do tomorrow i'm gonna put up the camera
05:29hopefully we won't have any bears joining us tonight see you guys in the morning
05:33oh good morning it's cold outside
05:41oh that's gorgeous well before i get the fire started and i start cooking breakfast i think
05:52i want to complete the firing
06:06i need to find a couple perfectly shaped stones
06:34oh that one's promising
06:38that one's promising
06:42Oh, my God.
07:12I wouldn't mind another one of those.
07:34I'm sitting here finishing breakfast, and I can see a flock of seagulls diving on baitfish right there.
07:42Maybe I need to rig up the rod.
08:01Just checking my bait, and I reeled in a flesh-eating starfish.
08:05I'm going to go put him back.
08:12That's an eagle feather.
08:24That's from a young bald eagle.
08:26Well, the surf fishing wasn't really paying off, and we've got a few hours before high tide,
08:31so I'm hiking back to the kayak to see if we can go do some kayak fishing.
08:35While I'm at it, I want to keep an eye out for a water source.
08:38I've only got about a liter and a half of fresh water left, so I've got to go look for water.
08:42Tell you what, I was just thinking I wish I had a hat.
08:51I hope there's not lice in it.
08:54Check out the bald eagle up there.
08:56Those are such a big bird.
09:00All right, we've got some water.
09:07That's brackish.
09:12There's definitely a fair amount of salt water in that.
09:15So this right here is a tidal river.
09:17It changes direction based on whether the tide's coming in or out.
09:21So I think I'm going to put my kayak in and catch a ride out into the bay.
09:24See if we can't catch some fish.
09:26Ugh!
09:27I'm going to stop and do a little bit of lunch before I get on the kayak.
09:36Ling-hee-mooey covered mango.
09:38Mmm.
09:55We let the current take me down the river.
09:57We'll fish a little bit in the lagoon.
09:59When the tide switches, we'll catch the current back.
10:02Sure nice not having to paddle.
10:05But I'm hearing an ominous roaring noise down that direction.
10:17We got some pretty serious breakers here.
10:19But if I flip over in this, I'm going to go hypothermic immediately.
10:23I mean, there's literally ice washing up on the beach.
10:26This water is so cold, it hurts to put your hand in it.
10:29But I've been sitting here for a few minutes and I haven't seen any breakers off to the left.
10:33So I think that's the trick.
10:38Oh, crap.
10:46Oh, that was a lot crazier than I intended.
10:49I may not be going back that way.
10:51Oh, this iceberg is making crazy noises.
11:01It sounds like it's being deep fried.
11:03The ocean water is about 40, 45 degrees.
11:06And so it's substantially warmer than the ice.
11:08Oh, that is cool.
11:10I want to see if I can catch myself a fish for dinner.
11:14And usually the fishing's better when you're fishing underneath cliffs as opposed to beach.
11:25Oh, hello.
11:26Look at this.
11:27It's a little baby salmon.
11:31I think that's a little baby silver.
11:33Won't fill me up, but he'll taste just fine.
11:35We'll keep him.
11:40Oh, look at this.
11:41Kelp greenling.
11:42Nice little kelp greenling.
11:45Oh, there we go.
11:48Oh, little baby kelp greenling.
11:55Another kelp greenling.
11:58Kelp greenling aren't horrible, but I like other fish better and I think I'm going to catch something.
12:03Oh, got something.
12:06Oh, yeah.
12:09That is what we want.
12:12There we go.
12:13Look at that black bass.
12:15Where there's one of those, there's usually more.
12:18Oh, oh, we got a big one.
12:20We got a nice fish.
12:24Oh, look at that.
12:28I believe this is a copper rock fish.
12:30I'm going to go ahead and put him back.
12:33You're only allowed to keep one of those per day.
12:37Oh, there we go.
12:39Oh, another black bass.
12:41You allowed three of these per day, but I'm not going to eat both of these suckers.
12:45I got enough food.
12:47Oh, there we go.
12:49Oh, look at that beauty.
12:52What a feisty fish.
12:53Little puffins swimming right by me over there.
12:59Oh, another black bass.
13:02I could have limited out.
13:05There we go.
13:09Another big black bass.
13:11Well, the fishing's been pretty awesome.
13:12I've got dinner and I've lost count of how many fish I caught, but I'm getting thirsty and water's getting really low.
13:24I need to go find a source of drinking water.
13:26I'm so glad to see this water.
13:42That is all the water we had left.
13:49This is the best water filter system.
13:51It just pulls it through with gravity.
13:53I got four liters of drinking water and three liters I can filter later.
14:01Oh, that feels good to have water.
14:03I was stressing about that.
14:10Dang, some of those waves are popping up six feet tall.
14:17I'm just going to porridge the kayak over this little spit of land over here.
14:20That way I can avoid all that craziness over there.
14:29There we go.
14:30We're back in the river and we're rapidly moving the opposite direction we were a few hours ago.
14:35Man, that current is ripping.
14:38If I were to stay on this river, it would take me to a lake full of icebergs and an enormous glacier that's calving into the lake.
14:44I really want to go see that, but that'll have to wait for tomorrow.
14:48Oh, son of a gun.
14:49Well, that wasn't great.
14:50Well, there we go.
14:55We caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
14:59Oh.
15:02There we go.
15:03Ah, son of a gun.
15:05Well, that wasn't great.
15:10Well, there we go.
15:11We caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
15:13There we go, we caught dinner and survived to tell the tale.
15:25It was a little cold last night
15:27and it's supposed to get even colder as the week goes on.
15:30So I'm gonna bust out my stove.
15:43All right, I think it's time to cook some fish.
16:02And a little bit of maple syrup.
16:08There we go, put it in the smoke but out of the heat.
16:12Got a little bread flour in the east here.
16:42Walking miles on those rocks with these boots has just been killing my feet.
16:54That is some beautiful fillets right there.
17:06A little pepper, smoked paprika.
17:18Ticket and mole here.
17:22There we go.
17:24There we go.
17:26A little pepper, smoked paprika.
17:30Ticket and mole here.
17:34Green hatch chilies.
17:46And lots of rockfish.
17:48Some salsa.
17:49Rockfish is such a firm white meat.
17:52Mmm.
17:53Really good.
17:54Oh, that was good.
17:55Oh, that was good.
17:56Oh, that was good.
18:01For dessert, I'm going to finish off my bread with a little bit of honey.
18:02I don't know what it is, but I'm going to finish off my bread with a little bit of honey.
18:06I don't know what it is, but there are a few things better than warm bread and honey.
18:34Oh, that was good.
18:46I will see you guys in the morning.
18:50Good morning.
18:57Putting this stove in last night was the best idea ever.
19:01It's so tasty in here.
19:04Oh, pancakes are hard to beat.
19:32I guess, technically, this is breakfast in bed.
19:36Nice.
19:41There you go.
19:56My smoked salmon's done.
20:03It's tiny, but good.
20:06Well, despite the weather, I really want to go see that glacier.
20:09This is a bald eagle's footprint.
20:15Look at the size comparison to my hand.
20:19From one talon to the other, that's probably eight inches.
20:22Oh, darn, I missed the tide.
20:28It's heading the wrong way.
20:30I might be able to get up against the current.
20:32We'll see.
20:38In the middle of the river, the current's moving faster than I can paddle.
20:41But maybe if I stick to the sides, I can sneak upstream.
20:45Oh, my hands are so cold.
20:57All right.
20:59Check out that eagle.
21:00A bunch of pink salmon right there.
21:08Look at that.
21:08I think I made it to the lake that feeds the river.
21:22Now, it's hard to see with all this fog, but there's an enormous glacier falling into this lake somewhere over there.
21:28I just got to see if I can find a way through all this ice.
21:32Oh, that'll buff out.
21:34I got to be careful going in between these icebergs.
21:36Some of these weigh more than buildings.
21:38And as the tide goes up and down, they're going to shift and move around.
21:42This clear water can disappear.
21:44Or worse yet, you can get squished in between two big icebergs.
21:57This place is just full of seals and sea otters.
22:11I've seen like 20 of them.
22:15This ice pack goes on forever.
22:17Ice that comes from the bottom of the glacier is super compressed and has that really cool blue color.
22:34The fog lifted and I can see the face of the glacier.
22:37The tide switches in about an hour and a half.
22:40And it's taken me three hours to get here.
22:42So, I better get heading back.
22:47I know I'm hungry when I'm double fisting it.
23:17Oh, that kayaking wore me out.
23:26That was about five hours.
23:33Well, it's almost dinner time and I got some bread dough left over.
23:42So, I think I'm going to make a bushcraft bread oven.
23:47Got the oven stuffed full of wood.
24:05Got the dough rising in the pot.
24:07Just stick it over here and let it rest.
24:29Ah-ha!
24:33There we go.
24:36Is there anything better than warm, fresh bread?
24:39Yes!
24:39Warm, fresh bread with honey butter.
24:41Oh, that was so good.
24:53Oh, the crust is so crispy on this thing.
24:56Mmm.
24:56Oh, I'm getting so full.
25:04I've got a belly full of warm bread and it's nice and cozy in here.
25:08I'm going to just kind of take it easy.
25:10I'm sore after all that kayaking.
25:12There we go.
25:34Nice little wooden spoon.
25:36Well, I think I made a little bit of a mess here.
25:52It's been a fun, relaxing evening, but I've got to get to bed.
25:55I've got to get up early in the morning.
25:57I'll see you guys then.
25:58Oh, good morning.
26:05I've got to hurry up and get packed.
26:28I hate packing up in the rain.
26:34All of my gear is soaked and dirty.
26:52Now I've just got to wait for my ride.
26:55Look at that.
26:55There's a whole bunch of seals right out there trying to catch pink salmon.
26:58Oh, there's my boat.
27:08Whoa.
27:09I don't need my shower for the month now.
27:13Yeah, you know, keep going.
