00:00Luke here with the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and it is a beautiful cold fall
00:03day here in Alaska. I'm building bushcraft shelters, watching the northern
00:07lights, cooking amazing food, and having a great time.
00:40There's a big old moose print right there. The whole place stinks of rotten salmon. It's
00:47a smell I associate with the fall. Wherever there's salmon, there's usually bears. There's
00:58lots of salmon on the beach.
01:05Well I didn't bring a tent with me so I'm looking for places to build a shelter
01:08tonight.
01:15Look at that. It's a small black bear print. That's his front pad right there. There's
01:21his toes and his claws. See this? That's a bald eagle print right there. You can see
01:28his talons. You can see he walked all over here.
01:33It's a wolf print. He went down here and came back. The print of a little fox right there.
01:43A couple coyote prints right there. That right there and there. All the animals are walking
01:52the beach looking for salmon. Nothing but stinking fish now though.
02:00I see a few spots that could work as shelters in a pinch but I'm going to keep looking.
02:10Yeah that wouldn't be a bad spot to get out of the rain.
02:13I'm kind of liking this spot. There's lots of wood around for fire and building materials.
02:38I've been using this saw for three years now, two years now. I think it's done good.
02:53I tell you what this is a beautiful spot on a beautiful day and it's tempting to try to just
02:58sleep out under the stars but it's going to get cold. Bitterly cold tonight. The low is supposed
03:04to be around 20 degrees Fahrenheit but there's a stiff cold wind coming off of that lake. Luckily
03:10that hill shelters us a little bit. If you go just 100 feet that way the wind is just in
03:16your teeth.
03:17So the most important thing my shelter can do is block that wind.
03:20So the wind is going to get out of 10 degrees.
03:22That's how I'm going.
03:22So the wind is going to get off.
03:24So the wind is going to get off.
03:38I'm going to get into the air.
03:39I'm going to get into the air.
04:28All right, I've got a nice little shelter here.
04:31Got this natural awning that'll keep the frost and rain off me.
04:35Got this wind breakup.
04:37I think it's time to build the fire and make some lunch.
04:40Bought this on our last trip to Japan.
04:42It's my first time trying it out.
04:53That works pretty good for taking limbs off trees.
05:07We're going to make fire with a piece of flint rock and steel.
05:11I'm going to catch a spark with the charred linen cloth.
05:18Got a piece of shredded up jute here.
05:27There we go.
05:34It's getting really toasty in here with that fire.
05:37This enclosed space captures the heat really well.
06:04We got some boiling bag rice we're going to put in there.
06:09While my lunch is cooking, I'm going to go ahead and set up some fishing gear.
06:20We're going to try to catch some lake trout.
06:24Got a glove of salmon eggs.
06:31We'll see what happens.
06:33Got a nice chunk of pork side right here.
06:48I just saw some bites on my fishing rod.
06:52My bait got stolen so there's something out there.
06:58It's only 2.30 and the sun's already gone behind the mountain and it gets so cold once that sun
07:05goes away.
07:06I can see I'm getting hits.
07:08Little tiny hits.
07:10There's definitely some fish out there messing with my bait.
07:12The question is whether they're big enough to swallow the hook.
07:20Oh there might be something on there.
07:23Most of my bait is gone.
07:28Got a bag of empanadas here.
07:45I got a little jar of Cholula's green pepper hot sauce here.
07:53There we go.
07:54Pretty simple meal.
07:55Fried pork side.
07:56Hot tortillas.
07:58Salted rice.
07:58And a little bit of green pepper hot sauce.
08:03Oh I love these little empanadas.
08:06It's a savory South American pastry.
08:08It's like if a burrito in a Hot Pocket had a baby.
08:16A little midday dessert here.
08:29There must be a whole school of little tiny fish out there.
08:33Because I keep getting bit up and all my bait's stolen but nothing's hooking up.
08:49Got some black beans here.
09:07We're going to make some good beans here.
09:33Alright."
09:33Guys, hiney.
09:34You got the cold water.
09:35Please chỗ's buddy.
09:38Pick up your Welt.
09:40Please, see your More Center cellul Express Road for Anx回去.
09:58All right, the beans are cooked.
10:00Now I'm adding some pork, onions, and jalapenos, and yellow lentils and rice.
10:12Oh man, I just dumped about half my beans into the fire.
10:15My little pot hanger broke and dumped half my food in the fire.
10:19Well, I guess that's why you bring extra, right?
10:35Oh, look at that.
10:39Got my tortillas warming up in the gravel.
10:48Got crispy pork side, beans and rice, empanadas, and tortillas.
10:52That is a meal fit for a king right there.
10:58That is so delicious.
11:07That was good.
11:09That was good.
11:09I am so full.
11:48All right, there we go.
11:57Well it's late and it's getting really cold.
11:59I think it's time to hop in my bag and I'll see you guys in the morning.
12:16Oh my goodness, it is cold.
12:18I think I need to get some water boiling and make something warm to drink.
12:25The fire went out around 2am so I woke up and put some more wood on it.
12:29When I looked up, there was the best Northern Lights display I have seen in a long time.
12:34They stretched from horizon to horizon.
12:37I got out of my bag and set up my GoPro and I tried to record it, but it is
12:41really hard
12:42to record the Northern Lights unless there's a moon out as well.
12:45But I used my cell phone to take some pictures and those turned out really well.
12:49But I sat in bed and watched the Northern Lights for like an hour before I fell back
12:54asleep.
12:54It was pretty cool.
12:56The Northern Lights kind of goes through these cycles and this year is supposed to be a really
13:00good year to see the Northern Lights.
13:02I think I only saw them three or four times last year, but so far this year this is my
13:07third
13:07time seeing them.
13:11Oh, my pants have frost on them.
13:13I'm going to warm these up.
13:16This herbal tea comes in a jelly and it's passion fruit puree.
13:21It's got bits of seeds and everything in it.
13:23This stuff is so wonderful.
13:27I made this mug from a cow horn.
13:29I also made this griddle.
13:30Quite a few of my bushcrafting tools I make myself.
13:33I did a video on how to make all this stuff about a year ago.
13:36I'll put a link in the video description below.
13:42Got some pork jowl bacon left over from my last trip.
13:45Just going to let that cook right there.
14:09There we go.
14:10A buttery hot tortilla covered in cinnamon and sugar.
14:15If you like cinnamon toast, you're going to like this.
14:25Buttery cinnamon and sugar tortillas.
14:27Not bad.
14:31I think I need to get my pants on and start cleaning up.
14:41This is a really nice shelter.
14:43I enjoyed it.
14:44But there was one thing about this shelter I didn't get to show you.
14:46If you're ever camping on sand or clean gravel like this, you can make a shelter that is so
14:51warm you can sleep even in the deep winter without a sleeping bag or tent.
14:56Let me show you what I mean.
14:57First thing you do is dig a shallow trench you can lay down in.
15:00Then collect tons of firewood.
15:02It doesn't need to be big chunky stuff.
15:04Stuff like this is perfect.
15:47You want to make sure you don't have any live coals that aren't covered in gravel.
15:51Otherwise, you'll find out right here.
15:52You want to make sure you don't have any live coals that aren't covered in gravel.
15:58Otherwise, you'll find out really quick when you lay down.
16:01If you do it at night, it's a lot easier to tell because they'll glow orange in the dark.
16:05Got steam from the wet gravel coming on up.
16:08Oh, that's nice.
16:11Oh, this is nice and toasty.
16:13If there's no snow on the ground and your gravel is really dry, you can do this in about an
16:17hour.
16:17If everything is covered in snow, it can take you 8 to 10 hours.
16:21You have to clear out all the snow, melt all the snow, dry up all the water, then you can
16:26do this.
16:26The key is the sand or gravel has to be really dry.
16:29If it's wet at all, it'll just put your coals right out.
16:32If you got a fire on one side and hot gravel on your bottom, it'll keep you really warm.
16:37In the past, when I've done this in the wintertime, the gravel stayed warm all night long.
16:41But if you want, you can go ahead and build a nice long fire next to you.
16:45And if you wake up in the night cold, then you can just go and move that fire over, throw
16:50some gravel on it, and sleep over there.
16:52And you can kind of switch back and forth.
16:54Well, this has been a fun camping spot, but I think it's time to take it down and clean up.
17:08There we go. Looks good.
