In this documentary, the members of the University of British Columbia's Thunderbirds hockey team travel to China to demonstrate their skills to the new teams in the East. While hockey there still has a long way to go, this film leaves no doubt that the Chinese players are up to the challenge. A film propelled by discoveries, it goes a long way to providing insight into the differences between East and West.

00:30Rehearsal for Friendship Ceremony
01:00Peking, capital of the People's Republic of China.
01:30Rehearsal for Friendship Ceremony
01:59The People's Sports Palace, where 18,000 Chinese are coming to see a hockey game.
02:09Rehearsal for Friendship Ceremony
02:39Tonight, the Thunderbirds of the University of British Columbia will become the first hockey team
03:09in China.
03:10Two things.
03:11One, we're going to go out and play our hockey game.
03:13Now, I know that we had some comments made to us earlier about, you know, what to expect
03:18over here in terms of protocol and everything else.
03:20But look, I had a good conversation today with most of the coaches.
03:24And we're here for one set purpose.
03:26They want to learn from us.
03:27And they know that one of the things they need to learn is how to be physical and how to use
03:31their body.
03:32So we play our hockey game.
03:33So we play our hockey game.
03:34We're going out to do that.
03:35All right.
03:36Number two.
03:37For one of the first occasions in their television here, it's being seen all over this country.
03:42And it's being done because of the importance of Canadian hockey and what they think of Canadian
03:47hockey.
03:48And you are at this moment, whether you're the University of British Columbia or not on
03:51your sweaters, are representing Canadian hockey.
03:54So what we do, we go and do really well.
03:5725 minutes.
03:58Six minutes, guys.
03:59You'll be given a pin by Jeff as you walk out there in the order.
04:04You're supposed to be going out to exchange with the other teams.
04:07They're not going to knock me down or anything, eh?
04:12No.
04:13They're just going to try to stick check me.
04:15Unless they've hired Pierpoint from Calgary.
04:17Yeah, I should be able to be open there.
04:20There's no doubt.
04:22You lift us as much as anybody.
04:27So really start right off the bench.
04:29It's really important that you guys get started.
04:31I'm really worried about our first 10 minutes.
04:32All right.
04:52Bye.
05:22Well, I've got to take on the whole group here.
05:47Let's go to the next level.
05:53Canada's The United Nations National Army.
05:57I'm going to have a team with the two of us.
06:02The team has two of us.
06:05We need to do a few of them.
06:08We need to do a little bit of safety.
06:11We need to do a little bit of safety.
06:15Let's go, let's go.
06:45Within minutes, the Canadians have two goals.
06:49The Chinese are clearly outclassed.
07:15You can't do anything.
07:18He couldn't do anything there, Hardley.
07:20I can do anything there, Hardley!
07:23Uncle David!
07:36Get up!
07:37Get up, big guys! Get up!
07:39Come on, they're back!
07:43I think it's about time to wrap that number 11, eh?
08:00Demonstration.
08:04Friendship first.
08:07Friendship last.
08:08Let's start wrapping somebody.
08:10Geez, that's something else.
08:12I've got to say, they're not playing the puck anymore, Jeff.
08:15Turn it out!
08:17Hey, hey, hey, go, go, go, go!
08:2211.
08:23It's a craft call friendship first.
08:35Don't let him just get away with saying he's sorry because he did it on purpose.
08:39So tell him he did not to do it.
08:41Did you guys throw your weight around too, or are you just going to take it out?
08:46Oh yeah, but not too much.
08:48Not really having to tonight, but...
08:50Gotta go.
08:57Where do you hear them?
08:59He touched it, touched it!
09:05Good morning, good way!
09:07Hands up, hands up!
09:09Jeez!
09:17The final score, Canada 5, China nothing.
09:39We have to do it!
09:42The final score is to give up.
09:45These are the original score.
09:47These are the final score.
09:49This one is for the final score.
09:51This one is for the final score.
09:53There's a lot of score.
09:55This one is for the final score.
09:57So what are you doing?
09:59Just that one guy that hit Bobby Sperling, he just, you know, he wouldn't shake hands
10:23after, like most of the guys are really good guys, even though they did hit sort of dirty
10:26and react strangely, but this guy just wouldn't shake their hearts.
10:28What's that, number 11?
10:29Yeah, number 11.
10:30Yeah.
10:31I gave him a good crack.
10:32How good are these guys anyway?
10:34They're the shit.
10:35Don't think so bad.
10:36They are.
10:37They are.
10:38Really.
10:39I mean, they got a long way.
10:41They might beat some university teams.
10:43They might have beat the University of Victoria in our league, but their fundamentals aren't
10:47as good.
10:48How does it feel to play in front of all these people?
10:51Well, you notice it at first, but then with them saying nothing, you might as well be
10:55playing in Saskatoon.
10:56But when we hit them, they're pretty solid, but they would, they would bounce off 10 or
11:0115 feet.
11:02But if, you know, if they came to hit you, you sure felt it.
11:05Were they sort of holding back?
11:06No, no, they weren't holding back.
11:07I don't think, because they were, they did a lot of holding, slashing, you know, kicking
11:12even.
11:13A couple of little ones, you know, nothing serious.
11:14I think they have a lot to learn about passing the puck to one another.
11:21They must make sure they are passing to one another.
11:28They must make sure they are passing to one another and do it firmer and crisper and more
11:36accurate.
11:37Don Johnson, head of the Canadian delegation.
11:40The Chinese team must attack together.
11:59Go send our honking bears here.
12:00Ha, ha, ha, ha.
12:01Ha, ha, ha.
12:02Ha, ha, ha.
12:03Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
12:24Here.
12:27I knew.
12:55I can't imagine people so young being able to do that with their bodies.
12:58It's just amazing.
12:59It really is.
13:01It's the closest perfection I've ever seen, I think, with the body.
13:06Do you think that's going to help them in playing hockey?
13:10I don't know.
13:12I think that's above any kind of sport, any kind of level of sport we've achieved.
13:24We were asking them about holidays.
13:29They don't get two, every five years they get two weeks off.
13:33Two weeks and five years?
13:34Every five years?
13:35Yeah.
13:36Last Sunday.
13:37You get Sunday off?
13:38Last Sunday.
13:39You get Sunday off?
13:40Every Sunday?
13:41Yes.
13:42You get this Sunday off?
13:43You won't be here this Sunday, you'll leave us this Sunday.
13:46I'm not.
13:47Because I'm one of the friends.
13:49I have sacrificed my Sundays.
13:52You're taking the whole thing for us?
13:55Everybody.
13:56You're taking it very well.
13:57You can.
13:59Great shot.
14:01You get a few fingers of the double A's, yeah?
14:03Right there, that's over there.
14:05I said it, Sam.
14:06Want to get a finger?
14:07Take a look at this.
14:08Well, you get a start going down.
14:09Let's see it go.
14:10You got to go up.
14:11Up.
14:12Keep coming right there.
14:15You're not.
14:16You're not.
14:17You're not.
14:18You're not.
14:19You're not.
14:20You're not.
14:21You're not.
14:22You're not.
14:23You're not.
14:24You're not.
14:29This picture here shows the misery of the people in those days.
14:34While the emperors themselves enjoyed such luxuries even after death.
14:39But the people had such a miserable life in those days.
14:43It's such a contrast.
14:44For what reason was it miserable?
14:45Well, the exploitation by the landlords and the emperors, the imperial families.
14:54Hey, now, how did you get out?
14:55What, are you supposed to be the green Indian scouts or something?
14:56You're right.
14:57I take it that the man behind the firm is Bob Highmarcher?
14:58Yes.
14:59I'm John Burns, the government correspondent.
15:00John, please tweet it.
15:01I do.
15:02You're the first Western hockey team to come here.
15:03I'd like to ask a few questions if you don't mind.
15:05I'm John Burns, the government correspondent.
15:07John Burns, please tweet it.
15:08I don't know if I go get an answer.
15:10Well, I saw your first two games here.
15:11The first two games here.
15:12I think it's OK.
15:13I'm OK, now, how did you get out?
15:14How did you get out?
15:15You're supposed to be the green Indian scouts or something?
15:16You're right.
15:17I take it that the man behind the firm is Bob Highmarcher?
15:18Yes.
15:19Hi, I'm John Burns, the government correspondent.
15:20John, please tweet it.
15:21I do.
15:22If you're the first Western hockey team to come here, I'd like to ask a few questions if
15:26you don't mind.
15:27Go ahead.
15:28Good.
15:29I don't know if I go getting air through.
15:30Well, I saw your first two games here.
15:31I don't know if I go get an air through.
15:32Go ahead. I don't know if I've got any answers.
15:35Well, I saw your first two games here.
15:37Looks as though you're having a fairly easy time with it.
15:40Just as far as the hockey is concerned.
15:42Yeah, I think we've pretty well dominated the play.
15:45I'm really impressed with some faces of their game, though.
15:48Can you float underneath the top?
15:51Basically, yes.
15:53Good.
15:54It's been the case for many years that the governing axiom in Chinese sport
15:58is friendship rules, friendship before competition,
16:01and the games that I've seen played in Peking
16:03in the three years that I've been here,
16:05the predominant impression has been an unwillingness to engage
16:08in the rougher techniques,
16:10which it seems to me are an essential part of hockey.
16:13Are they now prepared to start playing hockey as we do,
16:19or are they going to be indefinitely handicapped
16:23by an unwillingness to get rougher?
16:25We came up with the idea that they wouldn't engage
16:27in any kind of physical contact,
16:29and lo and behold, they came out and started belting us all over.
16:32Now, they're not the same size as we are,
16:34but I'll tell you, they're courageous.
16:36They were physically tough.
16:37They put their nose right in there.
16:39Some of those boys who are pretty tough,
16:41North China boys, short, stocky, but very tough.
16:46They've lived hardy lives.
16:47They were coming off the ice dirty.
16:49I just can ask if you spoke any Chinese,
16:51ask that fella if you'd sharpen that razor,
16:52because I don't know if the rest of the people
16:54who get a shave in here is physically tough.
16:56So that thing hurts.
16:58You told him to sharpen the razor and not cut my throat
17:11if I say the wrong answer.
17:13I told him that you were suffering a little pain.
17:16Sorry, you were saying about body checking.
17:18My impression is, for what it's worth,
17:20that body checking is not only politically but culturally
17:26a very difficult thing for them to accept.
17:29The Chinese are not and never have been an antagonistic people.
17:33They seek to avoid confrontation.
17:36Well, you know, one of the questions that came up
17:38was sort of the philosophical aspect of body checking.
17:41They really kind of understand us as a people
17:44in terms of body checking.
17:46And I made the comment to them, I didn't know,
17:48I thought that because we come from a very cold climate,
17:52that there tend to be a very hardy people originally in our country.
17:55And they couldn't see any reason why their people
17:58wouldn't be just as sturdy and have the stamina
18:01as Canadians who live in a cold climate.
18:04I don't know what the Chinese told you,
18:05but they didn't prove my coming with you to Harbin and Changchang,
18:09Changchang and Jilin, which is fine for me because
18:12these are three cities that very, very few foreigners have been to
18:16for, well, since before the Cultural Revolution.
18:19So I think we're going to see an interesting political situation up there.
18:22My point was that you're going to also find the crowds up in Harbin
18:26and elsewhere in what we call Manchuria very much more partisan.
18:30In Peking, yours were the goals.
18:32They applauded, they had no goals to applaud of their own,
18:35but if they had, you'd have found that they applauded yours
18:37more than they applauded theirs.
18:39Now, you ain't going to see none of that in Harbin
18:42because those kinds of playing,
18:43I want to see the hometown boys score.
19:07in Manchuria.
19:08It is one of the city's long-closed to westerners,
19:12Harbin in Manchuria, it is one of the cities long closed to Westerners, and most of the
19:37inhabitants have never before seen a Caucasian.
20:07Move it, you guys, we're late.
20:14Way to go, guys.
20:17Thanks, guys, thanks.
20:20You got a crow up there.
20:50Let's go.
20:57Speed skaters.
21:06We don't know how to use them.
21:12They should be the best elbowers in the world. Look at this kid out here. His elbow is about six feet in the air.
21:23You know, the sticks are about a foot too long, and the way they compensate for it is hang on to it by the end and stick their elbow away in the air.
21:30What do you think of them compared to Canadian boys the same age?
21:33Well, they're not bad, I'll tell you, but, you know, they tell me that the program has been going for about 20 years, so if it has, something's wrong somewheres, you know.
21:4913, 13.
21:5113?
21:54Ask him to skate and see if that skate's better enough.
21:58He said, let's try and see if it's tight.
22:11So the boys have their skates come right together, and they should put another sock in there, so it gets good and tight on their feet.
22:18He said, you know, these shoes are very tight.
22:22When you go around the corner, you don't feel like this.
22:29Is that an agua?
22:38冲 més車, check it off.
22:39Hass.
22:41You're the one who 준ệt.
22:42You see?
22:43Maika, the one whoит someone.
22:45Of course.
22:47The tribe is a man.
22:48They are one.
22:49Yeah.
22:53Are they looking at it?
22:54Oh my, nice der Tibetan.
22:55Maybe of course.
22:56.
23:08.
23:16.
23:20.
23:24She talks to us all the time in Chinese, but we don't understand.
23:46Ni hao.
23:47Ni hao.
23:48Ni hao.
23:48Ni hao.
23:49Ni hao.
23:49Ni hao.
23:50Ni hao.
23:51The only words we know that makes any sense.
23:53Sai Jin.
23:54Sai Jin.
23:54I mean, goodbye.
23:55Sai Jin.
23:56Uh, shee shee.
23:58Shee shee.
24:00Shee shee.
24:01Shee shee.
24:01Shee shee.
24:02Shee shee.
24:03Gongbei.
24:04Gongbei.
24:05Gongbei.
24:06Gongbei.
24:07Gongbei.
24:08Gongbei.
24:09Gongbei.
24:10Gongbei.
24:11Gongbei.
24:12Oh, you don't want it on tea.
24:16To all the buckos in China.
24:18To all the buckos.
24:19And the buckies.
24:20Oh, my goodness.
24:22What help?
24:29To the lizard.
24:30To a lizard.
24:33To the lizard.
24:34The wonderful, wonderful wizard.
24:37The wizard are a lot.
24:43Which one does a lizard boo.
24:47Oh!
24:49Oh!
24:51Oh!
24:53Oh!
24:55What's that stuff called again?
24:57Eilfei Shu.
24:59It is very hot.
25:01Very hot.
25:03Very hot, very hot.
25:05And a clipping in the newspaper says
25:07that the first thing the Chinese noticed
25:09about the Canadian team was their long hair.
25:11He said that
25:13the first thing to notice is
25:19the first thing to notice is the long hair.
25:21That's the water.
25:23Well, everyone can have his own choice.
25:29It's nothing clear.
25:31That's why I got this jacket,
25:33so I'd fit in with the masses.
25:35So he's wearing this jacket,
25:37so I'd fit in with the masses,
25:39so no one would know I wasn't Chinese.
25:41So he's wearing this jacket
25:43to make people feel
25:45that he's with the people,
25:47with the Chinese.
25:49Goodbye to Harbin,
25:51hello to Changchen,
25:53or whatever we're going.
25:55I don't know where it is.
25:57Changchen?
25:59It's Sunday, we must believe in Harbin.
26:01We're all in, I better say.
26:03We're all in, I better say.
26:05We're all in.
26:07We're all in.
26:09We're all in.
26:11We're all in.
26:15We're all in.
26:47Oh it's open Bob. Who's in here? Two things that you need to know. One that we will arrive in
27:02Chungcheon at 4 31. I think we will go directly to the hotel and then after we do that we're
27:10gonna have a practice tomorrow morning. Can you go through all the tea routine like we always do?
27:14Tea? You guys don't get tea today. Just hot water. Go get some hot water mautai.
27:20You might have trouble getting that through the border you know. Hey you can't carry
27:28explosives across the border. Well that mautai, that liquor they got here, I think it's half
27:33TNT and half gasoline and 60% alcohol that is. There weren't too many guys smoking
27:42uh you know near you last night. Any special things we should know? From what I gather what
27:48you know we have to talk over what we're going to do. But one of the things you're going to be
27:51going to is uh to see a whole educational systems. Hey how about getting to see the movie studio?
27:56Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go.
28:13Chan Chung, the Hollywood of China where more people go to movies than anywhere in the world and the stars make
28:20thirty dollars a month.
28:22The movie is typical. The story deals with corruption on a commune and ends with the re-education of the corruptors.
28:42Let's go.
28:44A home letter called Moreover, you needed to come to the war.
28:50Tell your story.
28:50Let's go.
28:55Un grouped by brain.
29:00The leads are 58% of the locals.
29:05I think four or so.
29:08This guy has some place in some places
29:11He's going to go to the train station
29:14You don't want to go to his heart
29:38How are you?
29:38How are you?
29:39Yeah, well, that's wonderful.
29:42Look at him.
29:43Hey, guys, that's what we did.
29:45Hello, my parents are a lot of times.
29:47Hey, come on, and I just broke in this
29:49and we'll grab some cameras, so,
29:51like, that camera, yeah.
29:53Okay.
29:54What the fuck?
30:04I don't know,
30:05I'm fine.
30:08Another lousy turnout, 17,800 to watch practice.
30:18Yeah?
30:19That's incredible, eh?
30:21Can you imagine?
30:22They do have instant crowds here.
30:28For how long they've been here.
30:31Because, you know, we only made a difference.
30:33We only got to know last night that we were having practice at 11 o'clock today.
30:38I mean, you know, like after the meal.
30:40So either they're being here from 7 in the morning on the assumption we're going to practice,
30:44or just on the assumption we might walk by.
30:46You have to put on a good show?
30:47We have to.
30:49Yeah, we put on a good show.
30:51Becoming like the Harlem Globetrotters.
30:52Got to make every act a good one.
31:08All looks glorious before, you know, you set out and all that.
31:22You think, oh, it's just going to be the greatest experience of your life.
31:38But once you get over here, you find out it's going to get a little boring at times.
31:42Like, what are the guys bitching?
31:47Right now, this is practice.
31:49I really don't think they understand that to these people, it's a routine thing to them.
31:56But to these people, it's a great thing.
32:02Everybody's coming down with colds?
32:04Starting to get them.
32:06Figure out the amount of multi they've got in their body, they shouldn't get sick.
32:09How many injuries?
32:12A lot of small injuries that you've had from your glance?
32:16Not too much.
32:20Bruce Brill had that shoulder problem, but that happened in Canada.
32:24Other than that, I don't think there's been anything, Jeff.
32:27Just your injury.
32:28Just my injury.
32:29Split lip.
32:31Multi cured that.
32:35I think the big thing, some of the guys haven't been pacing themselves.
32:38You know, like these that have never been on, say, a long trip like this.
32:42Instead of maybe every day making sure they, even if you're just laying down in their bed
32:46and getting some rest, they want to partake in everything that's organized.
32:49Last night, last night.
33:14Last night.
33:15Last night.
33:15Last night.
33:16Last night.
33:16Last night.
33:17Last night.
33:22What's that?
33:23Can you bend it?
33:25It's locking a little.
33:29Try to bend it on your own.
33:30It's locking.
33:31I can't bend it in any further.
33:34I'm going to rotate it.
33:35Does that hurt?
33:37Does that hurt?
33:38Ha!
33:40That's on.
33:44Right in there.
33:47Get all your weight on your good leg.
33:51Jimmy, you've got skates on. It's better you help them up.
33:55Get all your weight on your good leg.
34:14That's really interesting.
34:16Oh, wow.
34:18Wow.
34:26He's taking a picture of his own leg.
34:28This infection is what?
34:36Yeah.
34:38Yeah, after.
34:40He's trying to do that job.
34:48Any pain?
34:49No pain.
34:50No pain. I can feel a slight sensation running down the outer part of the leg below the needle.
34:55I can feel a sensation of the needle being, I can feel it at the point.
34:59I guess at the tip of the needle.
35:02Every time he twists it, there's a tense feeling down there, yes.
35:09Are you kidding?
35:10Are you kidding?
35:11I barely hit one of his archers and he'd bleed to death.
35:13Look at that guy's leg if they angle the camera, they won't be able to.
35:15Go ahead, Jeff.
35:16All right.
35:17Go ahead.
35:18Go ahead, Jeff.
35:21What's that action?
35:22Action.
35:23Action.
35:24I know it, Bob.
35:26You should have some of these on the bench.
35:28Because there's a few guys needed on the...
35:30Back check.
35:31Yoshio.
35:32Back check.
35:33Back check.
35:34Back check.
35:35Yeah.
35:36No sick, no hot no more.
35:38No loss.
35:39Very hot and good.
35:40No loss.
35:41He's not sick.
35:42For one month, that is to say once a month ago, he got lost his voice.
35:49He's not sick.
35:50Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
35:55He's not sick.
35:56He's not sick.
35:57He's not sick.
35:58So now the voice is like this.
35:59This is the same.
36:00This is the same.
36:01You're good.
36:02This is the second one.
36:03What's the name?
36:05This is the second one.
36:06This is the second one.
36:07You're good.
36:08I don't know.
36:09I don't know any other words.
36:10My God.
36:12Look at what it looks like.
36:13What's this?
36:14What's this?
36:16Look at more.
36:18What's this?
36:20What's this?
36:21It's a new one.
36:22What's that?
36:24Here.
36:25He's going to look at your front.
36:26He's going to look at the front.
36:27Yeah, I'm looking at your second one.
36:30This is the second time.
36:36Before he received the acupuncture, he lost his voice completely.
37:00Oh, I'm impressed.
37:20I'm charged not too long.
37:22Greg, you have a good sleep.
37:25Yeah.
37:26These look like you're just dead.
37:28Looking forward to getting home.
37:30Looking forward to getting home.
37:32Oh, you want to believe it.
37:34That would be the greatest thing.
37:38It's incredible how everything is the same, eh?
37:42You look out that window, and it's been the same for the last hour, and you look out that window.
37:46Do you think these people are sort of unconscious of pollution?
37:52I just think when you're a developing country,
37:56as we say in my sociology, 400.
38:00But, you know, you just have to put priorities, you know, and there's perspective.
38:04And pollution, I think, is really low down on their list.
38:08You can't find that note.
38:18Why?
38:20Why single out that note?
38:22You don't seem to be finding many of them.
38:24What was a big moment for you on the trip, Rich?
38:28Um, I guess the biggest moment was, uh, from a heart.
38:38Well, I guess it was a pretty big moment.
38:39It was carrying a flag.
38:40The first, like, I guess I've been playing on the birds for the longest, and the opening ceremonies in Peking.
38:46I carried the flag.
38:48And it was pretty funny, because, like, you go out and they play this music, and you go all around the ice, and you spread out.
38:54And we're standing there, playing the national anthems, and I got a cramp in both my legs.
38:58And they were just going up and down, up and down, up and down.
39:01And I looked at the top of the flagpole, and it's just going back and forth like this, you know.
39:05And the other guy who was carrying the flag just thought that was the funniest thing.
39:09It gave me such a good feeling when we were walking around.
39:12You know, when we first went to that school, and then they invited us in.
39:15And, uh, all those kids, the way they sort of responded to you.
39:20Yeah.
39:21It was really neat.
39:22The thing that I really sort of liked was, uh, sort of the people wanted to see what you looked like.
39:29Like, apparently, they like to know what your nose, eh?
39:33Like, apparently, orientals have such small noses, and that's how they talk about white people,
39:38with big noses or something.
39:40And I, uh, I think it was sort of fun seeing your reactions when they looked at you.
39:53I just heard that our noses are so big that our players have to watch the noses and put them outside.
39:59In space.
40:00I think the only thing is going to be good.
40:01I think the only thing is going to do is shout out.
40:10What's that again?
40:11Is that my nature?
40:12Nothing to me, he said.
40:14Ok, go on Doc.
40:16We can make a safe way.
40:17Let's see.
40:18We'll be safe.
40:19You'll be safe.
40:20You should never mind your nose.
40:22You see, never mind your nose, you see what I'm saying.
40:26Just a couple things, uh, we'll go home to eat now and there's that tour to the hydroelectric
40:55man this afternoon for those who want to go.
40:57It's not compulsory or anyone or for all of you.
41:00In fact, I'm questioning whether you should go because it's a three-hour trip.
41:03And the reason I'm saying that is that, you know, this is our glass game tonight and I
41:06think we'd like to admit it's the biggest crowd we'll have played to and we'll be playing
41:09to, so let's make it a great one.
41:12Okay?
41:12Let's think about it.
41:13Do a good job tonight, you guys.
41:16Come on, guys, let's get out there and get one for the Giffers.
41:18Come on, guys.
41:19Let's go to the Giffers.
41:21Hey, double-side of the Giffers, George.
41:23George Giff.
41:24Uh, was a centerman for Newt Rockne's team, Notre Dame, and he died of pneumonia, and Newt
41:30Rockne started that saying, get out there and get one for the Giffers.
41:34Against Syracuse, 1934.
41:37And that's when it all...
41:37And that's when it all started.
41:48Because, see, uh, he was the captain of the team and he gave it 100% the whole time.
41:53And when he died of pneumonia, like, it really meant a lot to the whole team.
41:57This is...
41:58This is like something out of Monty Python.
42:07What, is that holocaust of China?
42:10Hey, look at that number 18.
42:14Billy Gass is a pretty weird guy.
42:19And I want you to tell me to get out there and play a little hockey.
42:23Rich, why don't you get out there and play some hockey, because winning is the only thing.
42:27We all know that winning is the only thing, okay?
42:29Let's play hockey.
42:30Let's play hockey.
42:31This is a double-sided embroidery, a picture of a tiger.
42:41It is a gift presented by the Chinese Winter Sports Association to the Canadian Armature Hockey Association.
42:51Thank you very much.
43:02Thank you very much.
43:06Now, please allow me also to make a personal gift to the head of the delegation.
43:19The Brocade Painting of China.
43:27Distinguished guest, Mr. Lee.
43:38And other distinguished Chinese guests.
43:45I think it is suffice to say that we have simply made ourselves at home in China.
43:52As for the hockey itself, we took no pride in the score of the games.
44:06Because when two friends play, the score is not important.
44:20This was the teacher playing with the pupil.
44:23We have no secrets in hockey, and we have tried to pass on everything that we know about this game.
44:34In the field, we are not safe.
44:37We are willing to tell you all the things we know about.
44:41Once again, I would say as sincerely as any human can say it to the Chinese people.
44:48Thank you very much.
44:49Now, for me, possibly this is the most difficult task since I've been to China.
45:06And if I get lost for words, I hope he just fills them in.
45:12I think I would just like to read what I've written in the leaf to Mr. Lu Qingchao,
45:25My Voice in China, a true friend and traveling companion with warmest regards.
45:31I want to read what I've written in the book of Chinese people.
45:37It is for a letter to Mr. Lu Qingchao.
45:38To give me a letter to Mr. Lu Qingchao.
45:39In China, he is my voice.
45:42He is my voice.
45:43He is my voice.
45:44He is my voice.
45:45He is my voice.
45:46He is my voice.
45:47He is my voice.
45:48He is my voice.
46:05I just got a curiosity.
46:07What are we playing tonight?
46:09It's the same team you played in Chungcheon?
46:14I think the last team?
46:16Yeah.
46:17With a few additions probably.
46:19That would be a good time.
46:21Oh yeah.
46:23More sticks.
46:26Were we giving all of those sticks and everything away today?
46:29I don't know.
46:30No.
46:31The last guy that asked me if he wanted to trade sticks wanted to trade a brand new stick
46:35for something that came up just about my waist.
46:38That was a real bonus.
46:40You're good to take a hand.
46:41A guy wheeled around and took his stick.
46:43That happened to me in Peking.
46:44Some guy wanted to use my stick for a couple of shots.
46:47I was really surprised when I wanted it back.
46:49That was the end of the day.
46:56Looking forward to wrapping up now?
46:58Yeah.
46:59Yeah.
47:00I'm not looking forward to leaving China but...
47:02It would have been nice to...
47:04But I'm looking forward to wrapping up hockey.
47:07Yeah.
47:08I mean like it's...
47:09Pretty tedious sometimes.
47:10Like you say friendship first, competition second.
47:12Well...
47:13You know that...
47:14That's not an easy thing to work with.
47:17Yeah.
47:18In the game of hockey it's pretty...
47:20Like if you're conscious of...
47:23And I guess we haven't.
47:24We beat them 14-1.
47:25But if you're conscious of not trying to...
47:28Humiliate them.
47:30Like we got 14 goals up when guys started laughing.
47:33We all started laughing.
47:34And I think...
47:35I don't think that went over too well.
47:37You know we're playing within that situation.
47:39We've got to watch stuff.
47:45I'm surprised people have a show more interest in your teeth Jimmy.
47:48Yeah.
47:49I mean that's...
47:50Well they did.
47:51They almost lost them one time.
47:52That's right.
47:53They came in back in there after practice.
47:55And my teeth are gone.
47:56Yeah.
47:57I didn't know where they were.
47:58Where they?
47:59They found them...
48:00Under a coax over there.
48:01Not lost.
48:02Not lost.
48:03Not lost.
48:04Not lost.
48:05Not lost.
48:06Not lost in Harbin.
48:07No.
48:08Not lost in Peking either.
48:09No.
48:10Actually this is a nice dressing room.
48:12It's just it's a long way to the ring.
48:14Long walk.
48:15Oh well.
48:19Hello there.
48:20Hi my friend.
48:21Hi.
48:22Hi.
48:23My song of culture's referees and players.
49:23All right, good game, guys.
49:53All right.
50:23All right.
50:53To be asked to sweep the rink between periods is considered a high honor by the Chinese,
51:01granted only to men of accomplishment.
51:03All right.
51:13All right.
51:23All right.
51:31All right.
51:39All right.
51:41All right.
51:51All right.
52:01All right.
52:09All right.
52:19All right.
52:29All right.
52:30All right.
52:31All right.
52:32All right.
52:33All right.
52:34All right.
52:35All right.
52:36All right.
52:37All right.
52:38All right.
52:39All right.
52:40All right.
52:41All right.
52:42All right.
52:43All right.
52:44All right.
52:45All right.
52:46All right.
52:47All right.
52:48All right.
52:49All right.
52:50All right.
52:51All right.
52:52All right.
52:53All right.
52:54All right.
52:55All right.
52:56All right.
52:57You've never played in the snow for how long.
52:59Why?
53:00All right.
53:01I'm going to say last, last year, Christmas time, all of them played, so it was so good.
53:04Sometimes you look like you're playing in the snow.
53:06You're kind of getting your own times when you move the puck.
53:09I wonder what it's too.
53:10What are you up to?
53:11You guys came in and see you.
53:12I'm sure we got it.
53:13I'm a happy birthday though.
53:14Yeah, I'm happy.
53:15Big thrill for you, your first big international show.
53:20Yeah.
53:21You got any trouble for you?
53:22I need a lot more than you have.
53:25Well, you make a shot.
53:26You've never been an El Presidente.
53:27Coach number one for you.
53:30Well, it's a big throw for you.
53:32And I'm trying to get a lot of it.
53:34I need a lot of it.
53:35I need a lot of it.
53:36I need a lot of it.
53:37Jake!
53:38Let's go to the showers.
53:40My own showers.
53:42Let's go.
53:44I'm alive!
53:46I'm alive!
53:48I'm alive!
53:50I'm alive!
53:52Is this group sex in here?
53:59Group sex?
54:01They're watching behind the ears, Bob.
54:05My mother's talking about my friends.
54:07Hey, get up on the motor.
54:09Yeah, get up on the motor.
54:11Dr. Bob, here, you want another drink?
54:13It's a motor.
54:15You got a donor?
54:17It's real motor.
54:19A motor!
54:21Don't waste it!
54:23Don't waste it!
54:25Have a party!
54:27Three ounces and I had about six bottles of champagne.
54:29There's your champagne.
54:31There's your champagne.
54:33Where's that ginger swag?
54:35Oh, that's cold!
54:37Whoa!
54:39There you go, Bob.
54:41Hey, clean off when you're finished.
54:43I would suggest a hasty exit.
54:45Yeah.
54:47What do you say, Bob?
54:49What do you think about it, Bob?
54:51What do you think about it, Bob?
54:53Give us the whole story.
54:55Now, here I am.
54:57Who would ever believe it?
54:59Well, I don't know.
55:00They're pretty good kids.
55:02They're in a great series.
55:04I'm not sure I want to end up in bathtub at all.
55:06What do you think the kids will learn?
55:08Do you learn anything?
55:10You might have to sit down and jump because it's really cold sand, you know?
55:12Well, I think that, I think mostly, I guess it's kind of an understanding of other people.
55:22And I've really been proud of our kids because they've, I think, have done really well.
55:30They've come through and played good clean hockey and didn't react.
55:39You know, it was kind of tough, too, because some of the Chinese kids didn't, they didn't know what, some of them are cross-checking and, like, they do a lot of things that are illegal and they just don't know any better, you know?
55:51And I was really proud of our kids.
55:53The series as a whole wasn't really, you know, like really, really tough hockey from the standpoint of doing it, but there were a lot of unusual circumstances, you know?
56:04Playing at 20 below and in the wind, frozen feet, with tonight playing in the snow.
56:11How many guys, how many guys, I'm doing my, well, I might as well do my washing.
56:17Well, we got none of our guys, only one, I think, Bobby Murray had played in the snow before.
56:23And I think that the big thing was that they reacted and they adapted and they adjusted when they had to.
56:30And I think that, basically, no one could say that they weren't pretty good ambassadors.
56:35And I was really proud of them.
56:37It was kind of hard, I think, of some of the kids tonight, for example, you know?
56:40It is, it was sort of that kind of environment that's snowing.
56:44And I think they were singing Christmas songs before they went out on the ice.
56:49Um, you know, you start to get a little nostalgia and, I'm not saying homesick, but it sure would be nice to go home.
56:55Christmas in the tropics.
56:58Holy night.
57:02Three weeks in the north Chinese winter, and the Thunderbirds have made their contribution to international friendship.
57:10Where, where's the Virgin?
57:13Father and child.
57:15Holy infant so tender and mild.
57:21I'll play my flute.
57:22Sleep in heavenly peace.
57:29Sleep in heavenly peace.
57:34We ain't getting ready to do this now or two voi.
57:37Hey, whoa.
57:40Well, if that was China, we've seen it.
57:43Thank you very much, Jim.
