00:00Well, here we go then, in a place where it's all about the Longhorns.
00:03Today, it's all about the horsepower.
00:05Welcome to Austin and the 2022 Formula One United States Grand Prix.
00:10It is the 10th time that we have raced at the Circuit of the Americas.
00:14It's round 19 in 2022, and the Constructors' Championship could be settled today
00:19if Ferrari don't outscore Red Bull by 19 points.
00:24We're all set for the 10th United States Grand Prix here at the Circuit of the Americas.
00:29We're in the Lone Star State, and it's lights out, and away we go.
00:33And Verstappen getting away better, and has that inside line going into Turn 1.
00:37Verstappen's ahead of Carlos Sainz, and then there's a lock-up from behind.
00:41George Russell Lewis Hamilton goes round the outside, and Sainz is spun round and is tagged,
00:46and he's gone from pole to last in the space of one corner.
00:49Absolutely the last thing he needed, of course, to happen to him,
00:52and Verstappen then out front did somebody tag the back of him to just spin him around.
00:58The two Mercedes were steaming in there, racing each other hard as well, but Sainz continues.
01:04And Max Verstappen continues on his way then, with Lewis Hamilton behind in the crowd, roaring away.
01:10There's Sergio Perez, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who got compromised,
01:13and now could get overtaken by Alex Albon.
01:15Yeah, Bottas actually got shoved clean off the racetrack there.
01:19It's been noted by race control, causing a collision.
01:21Carlos Sainz, who tagged him. We'll have a look in a minute.
01:24Nicolas Satifi gets tagged, coming out of turn 11.
01:27We can see Sergio Perez ahead of Pierre Gasly.
01:30Alex Albon going wheel to wheel with the Alfa Romeo.
01:32Here comes Charles Leclerc. Sainz says he thinks he's got a puncture,
01:36and there is George Russell ahead of Sebastian Vettel.
01:40It could well be that George Russell was the man that hit Carlos Sainz.
01:45Let's see what happened with George Russell now and Carlos Sainz.
01:49Lewis Hamilton on the right-hand side, as he then goes to the corner.
01:53Oh, Sainz came across George Russell.
01:55He just cut across me.
01:57Carlos was taking the racing line up there, and George trying to claim the apex,
02:02but he was all locked up. George Russell hadn't got full control of his car.
02:08Come on, what's up? It's a good bounce, I think, from Mercedes.
02:12Sainz was perfectly within his right, under control, on the racing line.
02:17I think Russell will take a penalty for that.
02:19Brilliant start from Sebastian Vettel, put his car in the right place,
02:22took advantage of the lock-up from the Williams.
02:24There's the tag, George Russell on Carlos Sainz, going round the outside.
02:28Lance Stroll says, thank you very much, I'll have a couple of places.
02:31You've always got to be ready to drive off the track there in Turn 1.
02:35Yeah, crowd roaring the cars on through that high-speed section.
02:39That's the moment where Sergio Perez lost a bit of his front wing,
02:44or started to damage his front wing.
02:46And that is absolute heartbreak for Carlos Sainz, who is being pushed into the garage.
02:53It was his race, wasn't it, from pole for the taking,
02:56and it lasted round about one corner.
03:01I wondered what was happening to Nicolas Latifi as he started tumbling down the order,
03:06and that is the reason why a spin,
03:09where Antonio Giovinazzi had his spin at Turn 6 in Free Practice 1.
03:15As we head on to the back straight with George Russell,
03:17and George Russell has DRS that will be operational,
03:21and he's gaining, and he's gaining, and he's gaining on Lance Stroll.
03:24And I don't think Lance Stroll's going to fight this one,
03:26because I think the Mercedes has just too much pace
03:28with that extra 17 kilometers an hour worth of boost with the DRS.
03:32And George Russell is up into third place with a five-second penalty,
03:36coming his way at his first pit stop.
03:42Here comes Sergio Perez, and there goes his front wing end plate.
03:46You saw it, move over to the right-hand side as he moves past Lance Stroll.
03:50So Perez up into fourth place, but now severely compromised
03:54with that front wing end plate disappearing.
03:57The problem he'll have is it'll start hurting the front tires more and more.
04:03He'll slide, get more and more understeer.
04:05Then you start to struggle to slow down.
04:08You start locking tires in the braking zone as well.
04:11So let's see what kind of pace Perez has got.
04:14Here goes Pierre Gasly on the McLaren of Lando Norris.
04:20That looked rather easy with DRS.
04:23Is it the old switcheroo, though, with Lando Norris trying to get him back
04:26through the next corner?
04:27Not quite, and there is Valtteri Bottas just hanging back,
04:30waiting to feed off whatever scraps might be coming his way.
04:34Really get the feeling Sebastian Vettel's struggling for grip out there,
04:37because he's going deeper into the corners,
04:39and this has given Charles Leclerc all the impetus he needs to use DRS
04:44and try and get himself past the former Ferrari driver, Sebastian Vettel.
04:48Now in the green of Aston Martin, Leclerc has made up another place.
04:52It's hammer time.
04:53Hammer time now for Lewis Hamilton.
04:55Pit stops coming soon.
04:57And we are seeing it earlier, aren't we, Crofty?
04:59We weren't expecting the pit window to open before lap 15 at the earliest.
05:03But here we go, Max Verstappen in.
05:05Max Verstappen in and out.
05:062.6 seconds stationary, and George Russell is coming down the pit lane.
05:10You can see him right in the distance to make his stop,
05:13and this will be a bit slower for Russell,
05:15because he's got a five-second penalty held there for five seconds
05:18before they can then get to work,
05:20changing those medium tyres for the hard compound tyre.
05:22Out onto the track comes Verstappen,
05:25and is he ahead just of Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin?
05:29But Stroll is now going to try and fight him.
05:30Going down the hill, Verstappen's having none of that.
05:33Slams the door shut.
05:34Well, that was touch and go, wasn't it?
05:35And that's worked out well for Red Bull,
05:37but they needed a 2.6-second stop to make that one really pay off.
05:41And now he'll take off.
05:42Well, after getting past Sebastian Vettel down the back straight,
05:45here comes Charles Leclerc having a little look at Lance Stroll.
05:48That Ferrari keeping his tyres working nicely.
05:50He's got the pace to get past Lance Stroll.
05:52And once again, I don't think the Aston Martin
05:54fighting the Ferrari too hard.
05:58Spun and beached for Valtteri Bottas.
06:01Turn 19.
06:02About 120 miles an hour.
06:05And will this be a safety car?
06:06Yes, it will be a safety car.
06:08The safety car has been deployed.
06:11Just lost the back end.
06:13Okay, copy.
06:14Lost the back end.
06:15Now, Charles Leclerc is not far away from finishing the lap here.
06:18He's not pitted yet.
06:20There's a cheap pit stop, Martin, coming Charles Leclerc's way.
06:22Yeah, you lose about 11 seconds when you pit under safety car conditions
06:26instead of the full 21.
06:28So this is just a bit of luck that Ferrari needed today.
06:31Charles Leclerc comes out, clears nicely Sebastian Vettel,
06:34who's also going to luck in to a cheap pit stop time-wise.
06:38It's the medium tyre that goes on Sebastian Vettel.
06:40Nice stop from Aston Martin.
06:42And the other person who's going to luck into this is Fernando Alonso.
06:46He's made those hard tyres last very well in the opening stint.
06:49He's now going to pit for a cheap pit stop under the safety car as well.
06:53We're racing once again.
06:55Verstappen leads Hamilton, leads Perez, leads Leclerc, leads Russell, the top five.
06:59And Verstappen's got a very nice gap ahead then of Lewis Hamilton.
07:03Behind George Russell, we'll see company from Lance Stroll.
07:06And the inside of Sebastian Vettel.
07:08He's trying to make a move with that Aston Martin.
07:10Vettel just stays ahead.
07:12Alonso battling with Gasly.
07:13Tsunoda battling there with Lando Norris.
07:17Yeah, wonderful restart there.
07:18So that's energised the race again, hasn't it?
07:21As what I think is one of the best views of a Formula 1 car at work.
07:25Through the snake from turn three there.
07:28It just slows down towards the end as they collect the car up there and cascade down the hill into another braking zone.
07:36Game back on.
07:36And through that snake, slithering at speed, Max Verstappen stays in the lead of this race.
07:43Looking further back, there's Esteban Ocon with Mick Schumacher for company.
07:47Esteban Ocon locks up, goes too deep into turn 11.
07:50And Schumacher says, thank you very much.
07:52Schumacher will take 12th place.
07:53And Ocon might be compromised now as Fernando Alonso goes off the track.
07:57That's a high-speed crash.
07:58And he's made contact with Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin.
08:03That is a big moment down the back straight.
08:06And we've got another safety car coming here at Austin.
08:10Alonso was behind Stroll.
08:12Then he got a better exit in turn 11.
08:15Let's have a look and see what happened here.
08:17He did get very airborne.
08:20He goes to the left.
08:22And Lance Stroll moves to the left, Martin, to try and block Fernando Alonso to try and stop the pass.
08:30And that's when the contact is made.
08:33Fernando will say there was a little jink to the left just as he was making the move.
08:37He got very close, of course.
08:40High cross.
08:42Okay, Lance, you okay?
08:45Yeah, I'm fine.
08:48You okay?
08:50Yes, mate.
08:51Barely late, mate.
08:58Ah, they did well to avoid that.
09:00They all did extremely well to avoid that.
09:03Let's just have a look at Mick Schumacher's view making his way through the debris.
09:07Oh, dear.
09:10And we are going to be green once again.
09:12To remind you, you can't overtake.
09:14Before the line, they're crossing the line now.
09:16Verstappen then away from Hamilton, who looks a little bit closer this time around.
09:20Perez has got Leclerc for company.
09:23George Russell has got Sebastian Vettel for company.
09:25Into turn one we go.
09:26Max Verstappen has got the restart done well.
09:29There's a battle further behind.
09:30I think that's Esteban Ocon and Kevin Magnusson, who's ahead of Ocon for 11th place currently.
09:36As down the hill we now go and through the snake, the high-speed section.
09:40Sebastian Vettel nicely through the first part of that, gaining on George Russell.
09:44Out in front, though, Verstappen survived yet another safety car restart and survived it excellently.
09:49As Charles Leclerc tries to make his way past Sergio Perez, who locks up.
09:57And Charles Leclerc goes wide and off the track, rejoins the track.
10:00And Sergio Perez is ahead, which means the stewards don't have to get involved in that one.
10:04Because had Charles Leclerc stayed ahead of the Red Bull, that's definitely leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
10:09Yeah, and I think Leclerc realised if he didn't, he was going to have a Red Bull in the side of him there.
10:14So let's get a better angle on that.
10:17Just about okay in terms of time and moving over there for Sergio.
10:21We've locked up anyway.
10:23So absolutely fair cop.
10:25Let him back through.
10:26Sergio might have locked up, but Charles outbraked himself and locked up a little bit as well.
10:31And now Charles Leclerc with that DRS is catching him once again.
10:35He's in the slipstream.
10:36He's got the speed.
10:37Can he be late on the brakes and dive down the inside?
10:38But he's going for it.
10:39Charles Leclerc, the crowd roar their approval.
10:42That was absolutely brilliant from Charles Leclerc.
10:46Kept the car under control, saw the gap, broke the latest and managed to take third place.
10:52Tremendous car control there from Leclerc.
10:55Very brave too.
10:55And of course, you need to trust somebody like Sergio Perez that he's going to give you a Ferrari's wit.
11:02He won't give you any more.
11:03Great driving from all around there.
11:05Mercedes have thought, right, now could be a really good time to try and pull the undercut here.
11:10This could be hammer time with Lewis Hamilton on a fresh set of tyres, trying to put in a lap time that could beat Max Verstappen into turn one when Verstappen has to pit.
11:21Oh, this is not a great stop.
11:28It's medium tyres.
11:28It's a horrible stop.
11:30This is going to make it even less close.
11:32Lewis Hamilton is going to take the lead of this race.
11:35What's happened to Max Verstappen in the pit stop?
11:37That front left wheel wasn't tightened up enough and he's been beaten by Charles Leclerc in the pits.
11:43But coming through into turn one, Lewis Hamilton is going to get ahead of Max Verstappen in this race.
11:51Charles Leclerc also ahead of Max Verstappen.
11:54This race has changed dramatically in the last four miles.
11:58Now we've got a race on our hands, but medium tyres on the red bull and something now very much to prove.
12:04Beautiful.
12:05F***ing beautiful.
12:09On the day when he could equal Schumacher and Vettel for 13 wins the most in a single season,
12:16that victory might just have been taken out of his hands by a mishap in the pit stall.
12:21Here goes Max Verstappen down the inside on Charles Leclerc.
12:28It's the old switcheroo from Leclerc though.
12:30He's got him on the exit.
12:32Oh, brilliant stuff as positions exchange one after the other in the space of 10 metres.
12:38Crowd loved it.
12:39I loved it.
12:40What a race this is.
12:41Remember I talked before the race started at gloves off, championships over.
12:45That's exactly where we find ourselves now.
12:47And what they mustn't do is cost themselves tyre life and time up against Lewis Hamilton,
12:53who remains at 4.3 seconds ahead.

12:58And amidst all this, Sebastian Vettel leads this race.
13:02And I want him to carry on and lead this race and go across the line leading,
13:06because that'll be 3,500 laps he's led in his F1 career.
13:10Oh, I'm watching it, Martin.
13:10Don't you worry.
13:11And so's Charles Leclerc.
13:12And so's Max Verstappen.
13:13And Verstappen pulls out from behind the Ferrari and gets the move done into the braking zone.
13:19That was clinical from Max Verstappen.
13:22He knew he had more pace than Charles Leclerc.
13:24And it was a superbly executed move.
13:31Great move by Verstappen and Leclerc into turn one.
13:34Verstappen for trying it.
13:35Leclerc for knowing what was coming.
13:37And a much, much better move at the end of the back straight.
13:40This is when George Russell got ahead of Sergio Perez.
13:43It was always going to be tight.
13:45Russell got him with a bit more momentum going down the hill.
13:48But that went on an awful lot longer than we fully expected.
13:53Yeah, Perez ends up back in front again, Croftby.
13:55This is Verstappen making the move to take third place off Charles Leclerc.
14:03Can Hamilton dive down the inside for the lead of the race?
14:07Yes, he can.
14:08Vettel didn't really defend that one.
14:10Thought that wasn't the battle to pick.
14:12But Hamilton now takes the lead of the US Grand Prix.
14:18Sebastian Vettel into the pits then.
14:21And he's going to come out behind Sergio Perez and George Russell.
14:24Slow, slow, slow on the front left.
14:25It is slow.
14:26Oh, they can't get the front left actually.
14:28Oh, now they have to jack the car back up.
14:30Oh dear, this could have been a podium position.
14:33The car is jacked back up.
14:34Now they need to drop it so that he can go.
14:36Oh dear, oh dear.
14:38Poor Sebastian Vettel.
14:39A shambles there on the pit stop for Aston Martin.
14:42They're beating themselves up about it.
14:47And Fernando Alonso making his way then past the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
14:53I didn't know if that debris had come off the back of the Haas
14:56or if it was just something that had come off the back of the Alpine
14:59or they picked it up from the track.
15:00But it was bouncing away on the track, wasn't it?
15:02I think it's Alonso's mirror.
15:03There it is.
15:05And we can see the moment where it does bounce off.
15:08Yeah, the minute he moves from behind, out of the slipstream, there it goes.
15:11Yeah, but don't forget that mirror had a fairly heavy landing earlier on, didn't it?
15:18Verstappen with DRS closing in on Lewis Hamilton.
15:21Hamilton leading the race.
15:23Verstappen goes down the inside.
15:24Hamilton sees that coming.
15:26Tries the switcheroo.
15:27Verstappen goes deep.
15:28And now they're going to go wheel to wheel.
15:30Hamilton tries to go around the outside.
15:32Verstappen just runs him out of space.
15:34But then there's a drift from the red bull.
15:36Almost giving Hamilton the chance to move back again.
15:39Now the track will swing left-handed.
15:41Hamilton hasn't given this one up.
15:43But Verstappen, with better traction, just moves ahead.
15:46And through the higher speed corners has the lead of this race.
15:49And on the day they can make the World Championship, a driver and a constructor's World Championship, Verstappen looks like he's going to go and win the race to seal it.
16:01It was quite a late move from him there.
16:03But there was enough space to get through.
16:06But as I said, faster tyre, faster car, DRS.
16:09And the Mercedes was a sitting duck at the end of the back straight.
16:17Here goes Sebastian Vettel round the outside of Alex Albon.
16:21Sebastian Vettel up into ninth place and keeping the car very much on the road as Albon tries to dive down the inside.
16:28In the land of the Longhorns, it's the Red Bulls that are on top once again.
16:36Max Verstappen, just a few more corners to go to come and claim back-to-back successive US Grand Prix victories.
16:44It's a victory that will give Red Bull the Constructors' Championship in 2022.
16:50It's celebrations for team and Fordriver on such a poignant weekend.
16:55Max Verstappen wins the United States Grand Prix.
17:00Lewis Hamilton comes home to take second place.
17:03And a brilliant fighting second place it was.
17:06And Charles Leclerc, for the first time in his career, from lower than seventh on the grid,
17:11comes home to finish on the podium too.

19:26The only thing we could do today was win.
19:28And even though after the Pizzo was not looking great, I gave it everything out there.
19:32And I pushed to the limit to come back.
19:34They all came to challenge, as they have done throughout this season.
19:37But it's Red Bull on top on the day that their Drivers' World Champion came and won in Texas and sealed their first Constructors' Championship since 2013.
