Rising Sons — Rising Sons Featuring Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder 1965-1966 (USA, Folk, Blues Rock)
The musicians who formed the band Rising Sons in 1964 in Los Angeles later gained worldwide fame—primarily Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder. However, in 1965, despite a lucrative contract with Columbia, the band only managed to release their debut single, "Candy Man/The Devil's Got My Woman." The reason for the breakup of Rising Sons was "musical differences," but, as Ry Cooder recently revealed, "the rhythm section musicians didn't get along very well, but as for Mahal and I, we always found common ground." Taj Mahal later became an internationally recognized blues and folk-rock artist. Ry Cooder achieved fame first as a session musician, and then as a versatile musician/composer/guitarist. Kevin Kelley briefly played with The Byrds and later became a prominent session musician. Jesse Lee Kincaid briefly worked as Columbia's full-time keyboardist but then retired from music for good. Gary Marker died of a stroke on December 8, 2015, at the age of 72. In 1992, Columbia Records executives discovered the pre-mixed recordings of "Rising Sons," and, with high-quality digital audio processing unimaginable to musicians in the mid-1960s, the album was finally released.
