00:14weather for the Cowboys and the
00:16Panthers and Pam Oliver I guess
00:18we should buckle up for this
00:19game I've been told.
00:20Hey let's you know Rico Della
00:22was quite the median sensation
00:24last week not only because he
00:26sliced up the Dolphins defense
00:28defense but also he kept
00:30insisting that his former team
00:32should buckle up.
00:34With Tuba Hubbard out today he
00:36will have plenty of opportunities
00:38to try to back up those words.
00:40When we spoke he told me that my
00:42mission is to go out and get the
00:44job done be the playmaker that I
00:46am.
00:48He did note that the Dallas defense
00:50has improved stopping the run
00:52slightly but that the Panthers
00:54have some space to make plays.
00:56The Cowboys well they are in the
00:57lower tier and rush defense ranked
00:5923rd in the NFL.
01:02We'll see if Dowdle can repeat his
01:04performance this week.
01:06Carolina won the toss and deferred
01:08so the Cowboys offense will be out
01:10on the field to begin the day.
01:16Ryan Fitzgerald the rookie out of
01:17Florida State will kick away to
01:19start this afternoon week six of
01:21the NFL season.
01:23A really entertaining first month a
01:26lot of comebacks including
01:28Carolina's seventeen point comeback
01:30last week against the Miami
01:32Dolphins.
01:36Side winding kick Carolina has been
01:37great at these dirty kickoffs to
01:39make it tough on return men.
01:40Jaden blew the rookie with his
01:42second career kick return and he'll
01:44step out of bounds shy the 30 yard
01:46line.
01:47That's where Dak Prescott will take
01:48over.
01:49Last two weeks has been really
01:50sharp.
01:51You like what you saw last week
01:52against the Jets.
01:53Yeah I mean you see his numbers
01:54right there but you got to also
01:55paint the context of the
01:56environment he was operating on.
01:57He was on the road in New York
01:59against the Jets defense that was
02:01pretty solid and he did it without
02:03four starting offensive linemen
02:04and arguably their best player in
02:05CeeDee Lamb and they still continue
02:08to put up 30 plus a game.
02:10This is the two thousand twenty
02:12three Dak Prescott all over again.
02:14CeeDee Lamb is out again today.
02:18Prescott on the rollout.
02:19Brevin span for the second year
02:21tight end is there.
02:23It's that ball knocked out of his
02:25hands by Trevin Wallace.
02:26Going to bring up second down and
02:28six on a gain of four.
02:30Yeah so you know you ask all right
02:32Brian Schottenheimer he was the
02:33offensive coordinator under Mike
02:35McCarthy.
02:36They move on from McCarthy and
02:37promote Schottenheimer say okay
02:39well it's just going to be business
02:40as usual.
02:41This is actually a very different
02:43type of approach that Brian
02:44Schottenheimer is built a lot of
02:46under center the really significant
02:49improvement in the run game.
02:51Tying running pass together
02:52Schottenheimer's done a really
02:53nice job along with Dak building
02:55this early offense.
02:58So here's Javonte Williams the
03:00North Carolina native from about
03:01two hundred miles east of
03:03Charlotte.
03:04He takes it ahead to set up a
03:06third down and short.
03:07Derrick Brown was there on the
03:08stoppies part of the Carolina
03:09front.
03:10Yeah so as far as marquee names
03:12Derrick Brown he's as good as
03:14it gets.
03:15He is the premier player along with
03:17JC Horn the boundary corner in
03:19today's game they have to control
03:21this Dallas run game on early
03:23downs with the front.
03:24They cannot take these safeties
03:26and bring them down into the
03:27box.
03:28They cannot give up splash plays.
03:31It's been a big issue for
03:32Carolina all year.
03:33You don't want to allow Dak and
03:35this offense to score fast.
03:39Four in the pattern for Prescott
03:40and an underthrown ball for Ryan
03:42Flannoy.
03:43It was deflected up front by a Sean
03:45Robinson the big body for
03:47Carolina's defense.
03:49That'll bring up fourth down to
03:50three and out.
03:54That's a great stop to get this
03:56game rolling.
03:57Obviously we're going to talk all
03:58day about the load that this
04:00Panthers defense is going to have
04:01to carry.
04:02See big a Sean Robinson he gets
04:03that right arm up and he's able
04:06to deflect that short passing game
04:08on third down.
04:09So Brian anger boots it away.
04:11Hunter Renfro says bail out.
04:13And that ball will roll near the
04:16twenty four yard line forty four
04:21yard punt.
04:22A little lower than league
04:23average for anger.
04:24Here's Bryce Young.
04:25They played better at home.
04:26They won both of their home games
04:28over these last few weeks a little
04:30bit sharper.
04:31The word is consistency surrounding
04:33Bryce Young.
04:34That seems to be the theme.
04:35Yeah especially now as he enters
04:36year three.
04:37Of course everyone understands what
04:39happened last year losing the
04:40job to Andy Dalton then getting
04:42it back through some rather
04:44unfortunate circumstances for
04:46Andy with the car accident
04:47whatnot.
04:48But when he's good Bryce Young has
04:50been excellent.
04:51He made about five or six big
04:52time plays and that come from
04:53behind win last week.
04:54It's the plays in between the
04:57splash.
04:58He's got to get more consistent.
04:59And here is Rico Dowdle the
05:01former Dallas Cowboy and coming
05:03off a two hundred and six yard
05:05performance and eight yard run
05:06out of the gate for Dowdle.
05:11I think we're going to see a lot
05:13of this.
05:14So this is the strength of the
05:16Panthers offense right but it's
05:18so much of it is contingent Adam
05:19upon how well their defense plays
05:21because they want to slow the
05:22game down.
05:23They want to run the ball get
05:24under center and run at this
05:26Dallas defense.
05:27But their ability to do that is
05:29directly correlated to their
05:30defense getting off the field
05:31keeping the score down.
05:32So as long as this game stays
05:34tight this is who Carolina wants
05:36to be today.
05:38Off play action good pocket for
05:40Bryce Young and he's got a
05:41target.
05:42It is caught by the rookie Mitchell
05:44Evans seventh career catch and
05:46he had a big one last week the
05:48game winning touchdown against
05:49Miami.
05:50Miami he picks up twenty one and
05:52this is an area it's a little
05:53sail route he's going to sell the
05:54over and then come back on the
05:55corner.
05:56This is an area of the offense
05:57that Dave Canales the head
05:59coach and offensive play car.
06:00They want to see more out of
06:02their run game is best under
06:04center.
06:05But so far their past game has
06:07been best out of the shotgun
06:08those two things don't align
06:10makes your offense a little
06:11disjointed stay under center
06:13run and pass on first and second
06:15down.
06:18Here is Donald with some good
06:20blocking from Tommy tremble the
06:22tight end and that sets up
06:23Donald for another twelve yards
06:25excellent blocking to set up a
06:27nice hole for the Carolina
06:28offense.
06:32I think this is one of the best
06:33things that Dave Canales does
06:35uses Tedaro McMillan their best
06:38receiver the rookie first round
06:39pick they use him in a little
06:40orbit motion just a little window
06:42dressing to change the eyes of
06:44these Dallas defenders and so
06:47far here on this opening drive
06:48Bryce Young is under center on
06:50every snap and I think that's
06:53when they're at their best.
06:58Another play action from under
07:00center.
07:01Dump it off for Dowdle in space
07:03working against Kenneth Murray
07:04who shoves him out near the 20
07:06yard line.
07:09Really solid opening drive for
07:11Carolina against this cowboy defense.
07:13Yeah it's been kind of the the
07:14tail of the first four games and
07:16then last week against New York
07:17when this Dallas defense really
07:19came to life it was the pass rush.
07:21They went into that week five
07:22matchup against the Jets with
07:24five sacks through four games
07:25last week they doubled their total
07:27had five alone in week five but
07:30right now with the mix of this
07:31run game passing you're not going
07:32to really get the rush to pass or
07:34they got to sure things up here
07:35along the front here early.
07:38Toss play Dowdle with a hole.
07:41Another strong Rico Dowdle run.
07:44Wanya Thomas makes the stop after
07:46an eight yard gain and boy Rico
07:48Dowdle made some noise last week
07:49and then made a little bit more
07:50noise this week hoping for some
07:51revenge against his former team
07:53after a great year last year for
07:54Dallas.
07:55Yeah I mean you look back when
07:57when Dak went down of course the
07:58Dallas offense was kind of a shell
08:00at what it had been in previous
08:02years but you can see said they
08:03know I'm a violent runner and
08:05they got a buck.
08:06They saw it firsthand he was a
08:08thousand yard rusher last year
08:09for the Cowboys was a big part of
08:12that offense they lost him in
08:13free agency and it's had a great
08:15start to his Carolina time.
08:17Bryce Young maneuvering in the
08:19pocket had pressure coming from
08:20the rookie Donovan as a rocku
08:22their second round pick out of
08:24Boston College brought some heat
08:26it'll be third down and two.
08:31Yeah so I think that that
08:32pressure scares him around take
08:33a look here up at the top
08:34Xavier Lee get.
08:37Trayvon digs he jumps the
08:39underneath round you can see
08:40Lee get he's putting his hand
08:41up he felt it but rolling to the
08:44left there for Bryce Young the
08:45second he got his head around
08:47defender in his face just lucky
08:49to be able to throw that one
08:50away.
08:52Young's been very good in the red
08:53zone this year trying to pick up
08:56two and keep this drive moving.
08:58It is the first touch of the
08:59year for DJ Dallas and it will go
09:01for nothing.
09:02Reddy Stewart from the safety
09:04spot came up to make the stop and
09:06it's going to be fourth down and I
09:08wonder if this is four down
09:09territory or not.
09:10Yeah.
09:11So I think that third down call in
09:12Dave Canales his mind he's telling
09:15himself right.
09:16He's the head coach and the
09:17offensive play caller.
09:18I've got two downs.
09:20DJ Dallas mentioned first carry the
09:22year.
09:23He completely missed where that
09:24ball was supposed to hit.
09:25I think if he keeps it front side.
09:27At least if they get this down to
09:29fourth and one fourth and one and
09:31a half he considers keeping his
09:33offense out there.
09:34He knows field goals are most
09:35likely not going to do it against
09:37this Cowboys offense.
09:38So instead of thirty one yard try
09:41shorter than a P.A.T. for Ryan
09:43Fitzgerald the rookie.
09:44He's been really solid all year.
09:46He's only missed a couple of
09:47kicks and he gets Carolina on the
09:49board first on a solid opening
09:51drive that does stall but the
09:52Panthers take the early lead on
09:54Dallas.

10:31how do they sustain it.
10:32How do they handle the
10:33adjustments.
10:34I think that's something they're
10:35still working through so be curious
10:37to see can they keep up that
10:38offensive success as this game
10:40unfolds.

10:46on the return a little bit of a
10:48stumble he spins just past the
10:50twenty five yard line and
10:52Lathan ransom the rookie on the
10:53stop.

10:56Cowboys three first round picks
10:57over the last four years week one
10:59this season you had those three
11:01first rounders and then suddenly
11:03last week a much different look.
11:05Yeah they went into last week's
11:07game with only Terrence Steele the
11:09right tackle big news today Tyler
11:12Guyton the left tackle Tyler Smith
11:14two of those former first rounders
11:15there back on the left side you see
11:17there that's going to bode well now
11:20as they try to continue to get
11:21healthy here in Dallas.
11:23There is Javonte Williams dragging
11:25Patrick Jones past the thirty yard
11:27line for about four yards Williams
11:30a North Carolina Tar Heel in his
11:32college days that was the only
11:34FBS school that had offered him a
11:36scholarship so from Wallace Rose
11:38Hill High School about two hundred
11:40miles east of Charlotte goes to
11:42North Carolina turns out a good
11:43career there comes a Denver Bronco
11:46had that ACL injury a few years
11:47ago and he looks very sharp in his
11:50first season with the Dallas
11:51Cowboys.
11:58Here he is good penetration that
11:59time from Christian Roseboom and
12:01that kind of blew up the play for
12:03no gain a Sean Robinson finishes it
12:05off and it's third down.
12:07Yeah a little surprised here from
12:09Dallas on these early down just
12:11very conservative run game.
12:14One of the things Dallas has led the
12:16league in is their first down pass
12:18they've been so efficient they've
12:19been explosive.
12:21They've started the first two drives
12:22of this first quarter very run
12:25heavy and now it's putting
12:26themselves in back to back third
12:27and past situations three and out
12:29of the first drive third and six
12:30here from the thirty one.
12:37Extra man coming for Carolina
12:38Prescott's got time got the out
12:40route got the completion of George
12:42Pickens and he steps out past the
12:43sticks at the forty three yard line
12:45of first down.
12:47All right so if you look up
12:48quarterbacks first zone coverage
12:50Dak Prescott's arguably the best in
12:52the league.
12:53So we kind of expected Carolina to
12:55mix in some man coverage routes
12:57put some of the onus on the talent
12:59around them.
13:00Don't let him just sit there and
13:01pick apart.
13:02So they're on that third down.
13:03They dial up man and he hits Pickens.
13:07Fake to Williams throw across the
13:09body for Ryan Flannoy in a first
13:11down.
13:12He's coming off the best game of his
13:13NFL career against the Jets last
13:15week.
13:16He picks up thirteen.
13:17Yeah.
13:18So this is where Dallas is at their
13:19best under center early down but
13:21pass.
13:22You spread these zones out.
13:24They're so worried about the
13:25downhill run game.
13:26It all looks the same.
13:27I think the biggest difference
13:29between Brian Schottenheimer and
13:30this system from a year ago is
13:32the run and pass formations on
13:34first and second down.
13:35They all look exactly the same.
13:37Puts a lot of stress on the
13:38defense.
13:42Here's Williams again with a nice
13:43first down run inside of the
13:45forty yard line as we check in
13:47with our friend Carissa Thompson.

14:17first month plus.

14:28hand then a hurdle taking it
14:30down inside the 10.
14:31We'll have to check the marker
14:35that was tossed.

14:42They're going to call him for
14:43defensive holding clearly will be
14:46declined by Dallas.

15:16athleticism of Pickens in the
15:18open field.
15:19He's their leading receiver in
15:22terms of yards.
15:23Ferguson's their leading receiver
15:25in terms of catches and out
15:27into the red zone for Dallas
15:29where they've been fairly
15:30efficient so far this year.
15:31Well better than league average.
15:33Here is Williams.
15:38Some shifty maneuvering.
15:40Roseboom grabbed him by the
15:41ankle.
15:42It's a three yard gain and it's
15:43second and goal.
15:44You know I think that man versus
15:45zone though conversation Adam
15:47is just an interesting whether
15:49it's this game or just around
15:50the league that the general rule
15:51of thumb is if you're going to
15:53play zone coverage you're going
15:55to stress the quarterback and
15:57you're going to stress the
15:58play call right then it's just
15:59a matter of finding green grass
16:01when you flip it and you play
16:02man.
16:03Now you're saying all right
16:04quarterback.
16:05Yeah you're going to find your
16:06best matchup and now you're
16:07counting on somebody to work
16:08and get open that Prescott in
16:11this system against zone has
16:13been so good.
16:14I'm not surprised to see
16:15Carolina try to mix it up.
16:17Fake it to Williams stays in
16:19to protect under pressure
16:20Prescott was looking for
16:22Williams on a little release
16:24Williams was still matched up
16:26with Trayvon Merrig who came
16:28in from that nickel safety
16:29spot to put some pressure on
16:31again.
16:32So Adro Aveiro bringing an
16:34extra body that time.
16:35Yeah.
16:36I think I think they were
16:37counting on man.
16:38Dak has two crossers halfway
16:40deep in the end zone and just
16:42they pass it off.
16:43There's nowhere to go.
16:44And then right now he's just
16:45trying to avoid a grounding
16:46call.
16:47He's just trying to get that
16:48ball as close as he can to
16:50and get up to Ponte Williams to
16:52avoid the penalty.

17:19It's great job by Dak Prescott
17:20escaping the initial pressure.
17:23But Carolina they're playing zone
17:24coverage and they do a great job
17:25what they call plaster technique.
17:27So anytime in the red zone the
17:29quarterbacks go scramble drill.
17:31You've got a latch on to the
17:32nearest receiver and just turn it
17:34into man coverage.
17:35Really good stand now we've seen
17:37both offenses now trade long
17:39sustained drives and turn this
17:41thing into a kicking contest.
17:44Easy one for Aubrey from 23 and
17:46this was the hope for a girl of
17:48arrow to try to keep this as a
17:50kicking contest.
17:52The athletic highlight of this
17:53first quarter George Pickens the
17:55elevation.
17:59And the drive you've seen extended
18:00drives from the top of the
18:01drive from both teams as Greg
18:03mentioned.
18:04Both teams end up with a field
18:05goal on these last couple of
18:06series Pickens had the nice play
18:08and we're tied up at three apiece.
18:17Cowboys have played some wild
18:18games.
18:19You've seen him twice America saw
18:20him on that Sunday night 40 40
18:21overtime tie against Green Bay.
18:22We had him in that week two game
18:23in Dallas that they won in
18:24overtime.
18:25Brandon Aubrey just took the game
18:27out of the game.
18:28over at the end and beat New York
18:33Giants.
18:35Aubrey looking for a pinning kick
18:38it is going to be a touchback
18:39that landed in the landing zone
18:41hit the official.
18:44That is a perfect kick and this
18:46is the type of kicking we're
18:47seeing now the NFL that is a
18:49perfect kickoff if it lands in
18:51the landing zone you have to
18:53play it if it had gone out of
18:54bounds it would have been a
18:55penalty would have taken it out
18:56to the 40 but because it hits in
18:58the landing zone and goes into
19:00the end zone as a touchback
19:01that's like the old old school
19:03touch back to the 20 now.
19:04It's a 20 yard difference and
19:05both these teams are very good
19:07at it.
19:08Yep.
19:09Maybe no one in the league better
19:10than kicking those dirty kicks
19:12than Carolina.
19:13Yes.
19:14Brandon Aubrey probably the most
19:15talented kicker in all of the
19:16NFL between what he can do on
19:17kickoffs and then of course
19:19with the best leg in the league.
19:21Feels like we're going to have a
19:22special teams conversation a
19:23couple of times in this game
19:24based on what these two teams
19:25have done and can do.
19:28Here's young starting to run out
19:30of time so he rolls out of the
19:32pocket and he's going to take
19:33off and Bryce young with a heady
19:35play as he'll pick up about eight
19:37on the scramble.
19:47taking a profit.
19:48That's something that Bryce Young
19:49has talked to us about.
19:50He's talked to a lot of people
19:51about just take the offense and
19:53take the yardage where it's
19:54available.
19:55Yeah.
19:56You know the basketball analogy
19:57is you don't have to be you know
19:58Steph Curry from three just just
19:59make some layups.

20:01I think when he's had to make
20:02scramble plays when he's had to
20:03make some creative splash plays.
20:04He's made that maybe more so.
20:06No more so than last week.
20:08It's the plays in between just the
20:10regular consistency of running
20:12the offense.
20:13Weird snap handled by Young
20:15Dowdle pounds it ahead and he's
20:16got the first down.
20:17He's off to an excellent start.
20:21So Matt Eberflus in his first
20:22year back with Dallas now as the
20:24defensive coordinator talked
20:25about a lot of adjustments that
20:26they wanted to make after that
20:27Green Bay game and it seemed
20:29like they were much sharper last
20:30week against the Jets.
20:31They were.
20:32And again in the NFL one week
20:34sample sizes are always hard.
20:36Well you want to see them do it
20:37a few weeks in a row that you
20:39can establish some sort of a
20:40trend.
20:41But in week five in New York
20:43that's as good as this Dallas
20:44defense has played in a long
20:46time.
20:48Right back to Dowdle this time a
20:50short game as he goes into the
20:52teeth of that Dallas front.
20:54I think one of the things that
20:56Matt Eberflus did he made a
20:57couple adjustments.
20:58You know early in the year this
21:00was an exclusively zoned type team.
21:03Deron Bland was still banged up.
21:05Trayvon Diggs is still trying to
21:06get his legs under him.
21:07The man style that we were
21:08accustomed to seeing under Dan
21:09Quinn was a little bit of a
21:11transition.
21:12They're using more line games
21:13getting defensive line free
21:15rushers at the quarterback.
21:17Last week looked a lot more of
21:19what Eberflus envisions for this
21:20defense.
21:21Young the pump to get a defender
21:23in the air and then launches it
21:25away with a penalty marker
21:26thrown.
21:27They're going to get a legal man
21:28downfield.
21:29That's the old college RPO until
21:32you realize the rules are
21:33different.
21:34In college it's an offensive
21:35lineman or any ineligible
21:36player three yards on the line
21:38of scrimmage in the NFL it's
21:39only one yard cushion.
21:40I think they're going to get
21:42Damian Lewis here the left
21:43guard big free agent signing a
21:45year ago.
21:46Ineligible member of the
21:47offense downfield illegally
21:49number 60.
21:51That penalty is declined third
21:53down.
21:54They'll decline that penalty
21:55because it's going to set up a
21:56third down and long instead it's
21:58only one opportunity to pick up
21:59a first down here for Carolina
22:00instead of two.
22:02So the guy that's come to life
22:03for this.
22:05Front from Dallas number 53 James
22:07Houston their leader in sacks
22:09with three and a half.
22:10He was an unknown back in training
22:12camp.
22:13They let Micah Parsons go.
22:14They use him on a lot of twists a
22:17lot of stunt games had a big game
22:19last week against the Jets.
22:24Here he comes.
22:26Young throws the other way and
22:28is caught by Tedaroa McMillan
22:30past the sticks digs knocked him
22:32back.
22:33But it's going to be good enough
22:34for a first out past the 41 yard
22:36line.
22:37You know I thought all week like
22:38who is a good comp for Tedaroa
22:40McMillan first round pick out of
22:43Arizona.
22:44He kind of reminds me of like an
22:45AJ Green.
22:46Okay.
22:47Right.
22:48I think a lot of people think
22:49maybe a Mike Evans I think he's
22:50a little faster than Evans but
22:51he's big he's long he's a great

29:06It seemingly has changed how play callers think about situations like this.

29:17But then you have to look at the yardage you give up for three points.
29:22You could give up 31 yards of field position if you kicked a traditional touchback after a field goal.

34:33They continue to work laterally.
34:35And then once Lee Get catches that ball, he's giving them a go call.
34:38And how often do we see the linemen get out so early that the screen just doesn't match up.

34:45Speaks to some of the continuity on this Carolina offensive line despite the injuries.
34:51A little toss play Rico Donald blocking from Damian Lewis and Donald with another excellent run as he takes it down to the 20 yard line.
35:03Yes, he had six carries of 10 yards or more last week.
35:08And that's the explosive element of a run game that actually does lead to scoring points.
35:13McMillian trying to make up for his deflected pass.
35:17Does a nice job there on the outside on Leofau, the linebacker.
35:21And that was able to just kind of cut it back.
35:24He ends up tripping over his own guy there.
35:27There might have been some more yards there.
35:29He left there on the bone.
35:31He's already got 64 on eight carries.
35:33There's that orbit motion from McMillan again.

35:37And this time good penetration by the safety Donovan Wilson who already has an interception today.
35:45Carolina's offensive line is missing their center and right guard, their normal center and right guard.
35:50Austin Corbin suffered a knee injury against Arizona.
35:53Robert Hunt had that torn bicep issue.
35:56They spent a lot of money on this offensive line.
35:58But Cade Mays and Brady Christensen, the very versatile Christensen, have filled in.
36:02Nobody in the league spends more money on their offensive line than the Panthers.
36:09And really try to build around Bryce Young.

38:11Fitzgerald with a side winding kick into the hands of Jayden Blue and excellent coverage.

38:25It's going to be a sit by Lee get and then it looks like a dig by Ted Aroa McMillan.

43:37That is easily seemingly maybe not easily.
43:40But Brandon Aubrey's been very good from this range.
43:43So this would be from here like a 66 yard field goal a couple more yards.

43:48You brought up that week two game against the Giants in Dallas that the Cowboys won.

43:54They settled at the end of regulation for a 64 yard field goal.
43:58They settled for it because they thought they were clearly in Aubrey's range.

44:05Williams trying to shift and maneuver but Derrick Brown ends up with a tackle.

44:26They find themselves kind of in the middle of the pack.
44:28A big reason for that is getting Derrick Brown back his ability to control those inner gaps in the run.

44:38The next phase is just getting this front to be able to rush the passer.
