00:00When I was 18,
00:29I enlisted into the army,
00:31thinking it would give me the structure and income I needed.
00:34However, three years in,
00:36I broke my leg and was discharged.
00:38Ever since then,
00:39I've been in and out of hostels
00:40and other sketchy living arrangements
00:42trying to find steady work.
00:45I lucked out when I found a decent hostel
00:47where everyone actually gets their own room.
00:49So I moved in.
00:51I've been in this hostel for about a year now.
00:53I have a nice little room that I can call my own,
00:56and everyone else has their own private spaces
00:58to do their stuff in.
01:00The only shared spaces are the kitchen,
01:02bathroom,
01:03and the living room.
01:04But pretty much everyone stays in their respective bedrooms
01:07unless they need something.
01:08This is great,
01:09because all sorts of people
01:11are constantly moving in and out.
01:13It's a lot of addicts and homeless folks.
01:16So I'm glad I don't have to see
01:17whatever weird and or illegal shit they're up to.
01:21I do have one friend,
01:23sort of.
01:23He lives at the end of the hall,
01:25and his story is a lot like mine.
01:28We hang out sometimes,
01:29but we mostly keep to ourselves.
01:31Unfortunately,
01:32not everyone is so chill.
01:35Recently,
01:35this larger old guy moved in,
01:38and within the first day,
01:39he gave everyone the creeps.
01:41I'll just call him the Saw Guy,
01:43since he was obsessed with the Saw series.
01:45He brought with him
01:46a small TV and a DVD player,
01:49but the only DVDs he had
01:51were the Saw movies,
01:52and I mean every single one.
01:55He set up the TV in the living room,
01:57which at first felt like a decent upgrade,
02:00until we realized
02:01he was going to spend most of his time
02:03out in the living room area
02:04watching Saw movies.
02:06During the day,
02:07he was working or doing whatever he did for money,
02:10but at night,
02:11he would sit in the dark
02:12and watch TV alone.
02:14It wasn't so much that we hated Saw,
02:16but that nobody wanted to go near him.
02:19It was honestly weird as hell,
02:21and all the other residents
02:22thought he was creepy
02:23and hated him,
02:25but we just had to put up with it
02:26and try to ignore him.
02:28However,
02:29one night,
02:29I reached my limit.
02:31I was trying to sleep,
02:32but there were loud-ass noises
02:34coming from outside.
02:35It was Saw noises,
02:37again,
02:38but this time,
02:39it was louder than ever.
02:44I tried to ignore it
02:45by holding my pillow over my ears
02:47to disregard it,
02:48only for it to get even louder.
02:50Finally,
02:51I couldn't take it anymore.
02:53I was done asking nicely.
02:55That's when I got up
02:56to go out there
02:57and make him turn it off.
02:59How many times do I...
03:01My heart nearly stopped.
03:06The noise wasn't coming from the TV.
03:08It was coming from behind my friend's door,
03:10and he was screaming for help.
03:12I sprinted to it
03:14and broke through.
03:16That's when I saw the Saw guy
03:17on top of my friend,
03:19stabbing him.
03:20I rushed in
03:21and grabbed the guy,
03:22ripping him off my friend.
03:23He got up and turned right back at me.
03:26Then,
03:26he charged with the knife.
03:28I was already running out of there
03:29and I made it back to my room.
03:31Then,
03:32slammed the door
03:32and locked it.
03:36It took the Saw guy a few seconds
03:38to reach my door,
03:39but when he did,
03:40he made it seem like
03:41it was made of paper.
03:42He pounded on it
03:44and split the back down the middle.
03:46Then,
03:46he stabbed through it
03:47with his knife.
03:48I realized
03:49I only had a matter of seconds
03:51to get out of there.
03:52I grabbed my phone
03:53and opened my window
03:54as far as it could go.
03:55I had to throw my phone outside
03:57to be able to squeeze myself through,
03:59but I got out just in time.
04:01When I made it to my feet
04:02and looked back,
04:03he had just gotten through the door.
04:05I knew he wouldn't be able
04:06to fit through the window,
04:07but I didn't want to give him
04:08any time to come around.
04:10So,
04:10I picked up my phone
04:11and ran away.
04:13After I lost him,
04:14I called the police.
04:15At the time,
04:16I had no clue
04:17if my friend was going
04:18to make it or not,
04:19but tragically,
04:20the saw guy
04:21went back to finish the job.
04:23In the minutes
04:23before the police arrived,
04:25the psycho forced him down
04:27and cut through his spinal cord
04:29to paralyze him,
04:30just to sit there
04:31and watch for a while
04:32before finally taking him out.
04:34He didn't try to run away after.
04:36He let the police arrest him
04:38without putting up a fight.
04:40That doesn't make him
04:40any less of a monster, though.
04:43It wasn't enough for him
04:44to just kill my friend,
04:45but to torture him first
04:47and to do it inside our home.
04:49Nothing has felt right
04:51around here since.
04:52Only the most desperate people
04:54still want to stay in this place
04:56after they heard what happened.
04:57I'm trying to find
04:58someplace else to live,
05:00but I feel stuck.
05:01I try to forget about it,
05:03but whenever a new Saw movie comes out,
05:06I can't escape it.
05:07This story was inspired
05:10by a horrific incident
05:12regarding a notorious inmate
05:14dubbed the Saw Killer,
05:16who has seen his jail term
05:17extended after stabbing
05:19a prison guard in the neck.
05:20Matthew Tinling
05:21is currently serving
05:22two life sentences.
05:24He was first jailed in 2013.
05:27Tinling had watched Saw 6 on DVD
05:29while living at a homeless hostel
05:31in Mitah Vale, West London,
05:33and had proceeded to break
05:34into a neighboring room
05:36belonging to former soldier
05:38Richard Hamilton
05:38and stabbed him 17 times
05:41before sawing through his spine.
05:43Then, as he stood trial
05:45for another vicious knife attack
05:46on an inmate in 2016,
05:49he laughed in the face
05:50of a high court judge
05:52and showed utter contempt
05:53for the court,
05:54telling Mrs. Justice Mulder
05:56he had been a very naughty boy
05:58before his trial began.
06:00The 36-year-old is now said
06:02to have had another seven years
06:04added to his sentence,
06:06meaning he will be jailed
06:07until at least 2062,
06:10after slashing a guard
06:11with a knife he had hidden
06:12in his mouth.
06:13The attack reportedly took place
06:15at the high-security men's prison
06:17back in February 2021.
06:20The guard needed 18 stitches
06:22after the stabbing.
06:30This is a true story.
06:42I was desperate,
06:43broken, homeless.
06:45I'd been out on the street
06:46for a few days,
06:47looking for some place
06:48that would take me in
06:49or someone who would give me work.
06:51That's when I saw a flyer
06:52tumbling down the street,
06:54and out of sheer luck,
06:55it was an ad for a job.
06:57Supposedly,
06:57this rich guy living in a big old house
07:00needed someone to clean it.
07:01I was never much of a cleaner,
07:03but I was willing to do
07:04just about anything at that point.
07:06It took me a day's worth of begging
07:08to scrape up enough cash
07:09for a bus ticket,
07:10making me afraid
07:11I'd end up stranded
07:12if it didn't work out.
07:14The bus dropped me off.
07:15Eventually,
07:16I found the house.
07:18It was three stories tall,
07:19across the street from a pharmacy,
07:21and a few abandoned businesses.
07:23But other than that,
07:24there was nothing else around.
07:26It had taken me so long
07:27to get there
07:28that the sun was already setting.
07:30Not wanting to be out
07:31on the street at night,
07:32I ignored the sinking feeling
07:33in my gut
07:34and knocked on the door.
07:37After a few seconds,
07:38it was opened by a man
07:40with a long mustache
07:41and protruding cheekbones,
07:43wearing a three-piece suit
07:44and a bowler hat.
07:45Despite how rich
07:46his house and outfit
07:47made him seem,
07:48he had a musty smell about him.
07:50I couldn't place
07:50what it was from,
07:52but I didn't want to ruin
07:53my opportunity
07:53by being awkward,
07:55so I stayed in my business.
07:56Good evening, sir.
07:58I'm sorry to disturb you,
07:59but I'm here to inquire
08:00about the cleaning job.
08:02Yes.
08:03Is the position still open?
08:05I could always use
08:06the help around here.
08:07Come inside.
08:09Great.
08:10Uh, just one thing.
08:11Is there a room
08:12where I can stay as well?
08:13Please,
08:14allow me to show you
08:15where you shall rest.
08:17With the promise of a bed
08:18as well as employment,
08:20I couldn't stop myself
08:21from entering the house.
08:22I knew something
08:23was off about it,
08:24but I didn't care.
08:26I needed it.
08:27I stepped through the door
08:27into the foyer,
08:29where nothing seemed
08:29to be too out of place,
08:31just a bit dark and dusty.
08:33Suddenly,
08:34the door slammed shut
08:35behind me.
08:35All the lights
08:36got snuffed out
08:37in an instant.
08:38I couldn't see a thing
08:39as I heard the door lock,
08:40then the man's footsteps
08:41as he ran into the house.
08:43I immediately started
08:44shouting at him
08:45to cut it out
08:45and turn on the lights,
08:47but my voice just echoed
08:48by itself.
08:49I was on my own.
08:50As my heart was pounding
08:51in my chest,
08:52I found my way back
08:53to the front door
08:54and tried to open it,
08:55only for it to be jammed.
08:57No matter which way,
08:58I tried to turn the lock,
08:59pull the handle,
09:00or ram my way through.
09:02It wouldn't budge.
09:03I turned around again,
09:04taking my phone
09:05and turning on the flashlight,
09:07now determined
09:07to find some other way out
09:09before that guy
09:10could continue
09:10his sick joke any longer.
09:12There had to be
09:12some window or side door
09:14that I could get through.
09:15I just had to find it
09:16before it was too late.
09:17I began walking
09:18through the house quickly,
09:20wanting to get out
09:20before my battery died,
09:22which would only
09:22take a few minutes.
09:24There seemed to be
09:24room after room,
09:26all connected like a maze
09:27with no sense behind it.
09:29Each room had been
09:30trashed or bloodied
09:30in one way or another,
09:32with some rooms
09:33smelling like a rotting corpse
09:34and others,
09:35fresh blood.
09:36The severity of the hellscape
09:38I was trapped in
09:39became more apparent,
09:40more nightmarish
09:41with every step.
09:42Then,
09:43I saw the first booby trap,
09:44an axe hanging upside down
09:46from the ceiling
09:47of a narrow corridor.
09:48There was blood
09:49on the blade
09:49as well as the carpet
09:50beneath it,
09:51so it must have already
09:52been tripped
09:52by some other poor bastard
09:54who snagged a trip wire
09:55and took an axe
09:56to the face.
09:57Knowing the house
09:58was full of traps,
09:59I tried to proceed
10:00more cautiously,
10:01but I couldn't slow
10:02my breathing,
10:03which was running
10:03out of control.
10:05I passed by it
10:05and felt the flies
10:06hitting my face.
10:07When I turned around
10:08to look through the door,
10:09I saw a mangled torso
10:11rotting on the center rug,
10:12but its limbs
10:13had been ripped off
10:14and were lying
10:15in the corners of the room.
10:16The sight of it
10:17sent me into a panic.
10:18That was going to be me
10:19if I didn't get the hell out.
10:21I forced myself
10:22to keep going,
10:23but just around
10:23the very next corner,
10:25he was waiting for me.
10:26Hey, you let me out
10:36of this place.
10:37You can't keep me here.
10:44Do you hear me?
10:46Let me out of here now.
10:48No.
10:53Leave me alone.
10:55Leave me alone.
11:24This story was inspired
11:35by one of the most
11:36notorious serial killers,
11:38Herman Webster Muggit,
11:39better known as H.H. Holmes.
11:42As it turns out,
11:43the story of Saul
11:44took its cues
11:45from the med student
11:45serial killer,
11:47who ruthlessly tortured
11:48and took out
11:48countless victims.
11:50Holmes is believed
11:50to have taken out
11:51somewhere between
11:5220 and 200 people.
11:53These victims
11:54were primarily women,
11:56but included some men.
11:57He took out many
11:58of his victims
11:59in a specially constructed home,
12:01which was later nicknamed
12:02the Murder Castle.
12:04He managed
12:04to secure
12:05a Chicago pharmacy
12:06by defrauding
12:06the pharmacist
12:07and built a block-long
12:09three-story building
12:10on the lot across the street
12:11and opened it
12:12as a hotel.
12:13The bottom floor
12:14of the castle
12:14contained shops
12:15and the top
12:16his personal office
12:17and the middle floor
12:18a maze of over
12:19100 windowless rooms.
12:21Over a period
12:22of three years,
12:23Holmes selected
12:23female victims
12:24from among his hotel guests
12:26and tortured them
12:27in soundproof
12:28and escape-proof chambers
12:29fitted with gas lines
12:30to asphyxiate
12:31the woman at any time.
12:33Once dead,
12:33the victims' bodies
12:34went by chute
12:35to the basement.
12:36The same year,
12:37Holmes' castle
12:38in Chicago burned down,
12:40revealing the carnage
12:41therein
12:41to the police and firemen.
12:43His habit
12:43of taking out
12:44insurance policies
12:45on some of his victims
12:46before taking them out
12:47may have eventually
12:48exposed him regardless.
12:50Holmes was ultimately
12:51apprehended in 1894
12:53and was hanged
12:54for his crimes
12:55two years later.
13:13Every single time
13:14they come out
13:15with the new Saw movie,
13:16the most traumatic memory
13:18in my life resurfaces.
13:20The movies remind me
13:21of jigsaw puzzles,
13:22which used to mean
13:23nothing to me
13:24until that hellish night
13:25years ago.
13:26At the time,
13:27I was dating this guy
13:28named Steven.
13:29It wasn't a super
13:30serious relationship.
13:32He almost spent more time
13:33hanging out with his friends
13:34than with me,
13:35which was fine.
13:36But if Steven didn't have
13:37plans with his best friend,
13:39he would come over
13:40to my place.
13:41I barely ever went to his.
13:43It was easier to have him
13:44over for the night
13:45and send him home
13:46in the morning.
13:47Thinking back on it,
13:48I didn't even know
13:49Steven all that well.
13:50Maybe I was just using him.
13:52I certainly didn't have a clue
13:53about what was truly
13:54going on in his head,
13:56though I never felt unsafe
13:57around him or anything.
13:59Well,
13:59not until the night
14:00I realized he was
14:01the most dangerous person
14:02I've ever met.
14:03That night,
14:04I was sitting on the couch,
14:06watching TV for hours
14:07as I waited for him
14:08to show up.
14:09We'd spoke on the phone
14:10earlier,
14:11and he said he would come over
14:12after he got off work.
14:14That was around 10.
14:15Then he'd usually arrive
14:16less than a half an hour later.
14:18By midnight,
14:19I was getting pissed.
14:20I didn't get a call that night,
14:22not even a text,
14:23so I had no idea
14:24what was taking him so long.
14:26Finally,
14:27at nearly 1 a.m.,
14:28I heard a knock on the door.
14:31I wasn't even sure
14:32if it was him at first.
14:34He never knocked before.
14:35He would always just walk in.
14:37I shouted from the couch
14:38that he could enter,
14:39but he just stood out there
14:41silently,
14:42annoyed.
14:42I got up and looked
14:43through the people
14:44just to make sure
14:45it was actually him.
14:46And it was.
14:47It was,
14:48Steven.
14:49But things took a dark turn
14:50for the worst
14:51when I opened the door
14:52and was mortified
14:53to see Steven covered in blood.
14:55I need help.
14:57Steven,
14:58what the hell happened to you?
14:59What did you do?
15:00Just help me,
15:02please.
15:02Not until you explain
15:03what the hell is going on.
15:05I was in a fight.
15:06Come to the hospital with me.
15:08I don't want to go alone,
15:09okay?
15:10Uh,
15:11okay.
15:12Sure.
15:13It seemed like he was in shock
15:14from whatever it was
15:15and couldn't tell me exactly.
15:17I ended up changing
15:18and then got in his car.
15:20He started driving.
15:21I didn't think
15:22he was in a good state to drive,
15:24but he was being safer than ever.
15:25Just one thing
15:26wasn't right with his driving.
15:28I had a vague idea
15:29of where the hospital was,
15:30but I had a feeling
15:31we were going the wrong way.
15:33I didn't want to say anything,
15:34but then I eventually realized
15:36we weren't going there at all.
15:38We were going to his friend's house.
15:40Suddenly,
15:41we pulled into the driveway
15:42and I asked why we were
15:44at his friend's place.
15:45That's when he gave me
15:46the creepiest,
15:47coldest stare
15:47and told me to come inside with him.
15:50I was starting to get
15:51even more suspicious
15:52about what his friend
15:53had to do with this,
15:54but stupidly,
15:55I still walked through that door.
15:57Steven led me through the house
15:58which was completely unlit
16:00like nobody was home.
16:01At the end of a hallway,
16:02he opened a door into a bedroom
16:04then pointed me through.
16:06Once I was inside,
16:07he turned on the lights
16:08and what I saw
16:09made me want to cry,
16:11scream and throw up.
16:12His friend was dead
16:13on the floor in front of me.
16:15Steven,
16:16did you do this?
16:18Yes.
16:19Why?
16:20Grab the saw.
16:21What?
16:22Grab the saw.
16:23I knew I didn't have a choice anymore.
16:25I had to do whatever
16:26Steven told me to do
16:28or I was going to be
16:29his next victim.
16:30He forced me to help him
16:31dispose of the body.
16:32Which wasn't as easy
16:33as rolling it up in a rug
16:35and taking it to the dump.
16:36Steven had other plans.
16:38He gave me a saw.
16:39He had one too.
16:40Along with a hatchet
16:41he used to take out his friend.
16:43Together,
16:44we sawed every single limb
16:45off the body.
16:46Then,
16:47we collected various bags
16:48and boxes
16:49from around his friend's house
16:50and packed each part of the body
16:52into separate containers.
16:54Next,
16:55we loaded his car up
16:56with the severed remains
16:57of his friend
16:57and spent the rest of the night
16:59scattering them
17:00in different locations
17:01all over town.
17:02Finally,
17:03just before sunrise,
17:04we were finished.
17:05Steven dropped me off at home
17:07with instructions
17:08to shower thoroughly
17:09and burn my clothes.
17:11I did what he said,
17:12still under his spell of fear.
17:14But soon,
17:15the body parts were discovered.
17:16The case was all
17:17anyone was talking about
17:19and as hard as I tried,
17:20I couldn't keep silent.
17:22I went to the police,
17:23knowing they would jail me too.
17:25With my confession,
17:26they arrested Steven,
17:28who still had more secrets
17:29he kept from me.
17:30This murder of his friend
17:31wasn't random.
17:32He'd been planning it for months,
17:34just like he planned
17:35all his previous murders,
17:37which he had gotten away with
17:38until then.
17:39I had been dating a serial killer
17:40and didn't have a clue,
17:42not before he used me.
17:43They dubbed him
17:44the Jigsaw Killer
17:45for his crimes.
17:46After serving some years
17:47in prison for my part
17:49in the cover-up,
17:50I was let out.
17:51But I'll never be free
17:52from what I did with Steven,
17:54even as he spends
17:55the rest of his life
17:55behind bars.
17:56There are constant reminders
17:58of my sins,
17:59even in the movies.
