iPhone 17 Pro vs Professional Camera - Portrait Mode!

00:00All right guys it's that time of year again where we compare the iPhone 17 Pro to a pro camera to
00:12take a look at portrait mode and the improvements on portrait mode. Now this year I got a few tricks
00:16to get better portraits as well as getting a further zoom than 4x in portrait mode. The video
00:21starts right now. Oh yeah this video was sponsored by Taurus and this is their new Q3 Air and put it

00:35little bit further. So looking straight in yep three two one three two one love it. The lighting's pretty
00:48dope in here too. A couple more of these and then we'll switch to the 4x. Everything is orange. Orange we
00:56did it for the phone. We can try some stuff in the sun while it exists for like five minutes. So this
01:03is what the new 4x camera. I like that when you're hand up on the jacket. Yep three two one nice look
01:10ahead this with time now. Yeah. So what's really cool is we can now get a 24 megapixel portrait mode
01:19image from the telephoto camera which we haven't been able to do ever in an iPhone until now
01:23because the new camera system now has 48 megapixel fusion cameras on all three lenses. So the 0.5
01:29the 1x and the 4x. Now when it comes to portrait mode you can only use 1x 2x and 4x. There is an 8x
01:35option on the regular camera but not for portrait mode but I do have a trick for that and I'll show
01:39you that later. We could try some backlit stuff where we shoot up through here. Loving that. I like
01:45the depth. I like the frame. I like the pose. I'm gonna get a little closer. This is gonna be more of
01:50like a headshot. Turn a little more this direction. Back a bit. Right there the light's hitting nice.
01:56All right. So get that. Three two one. Three two one. We got it.
02:14So going back a couple years Apple started to allow us to take photos in the normal camera and turn
02:19them into portrait mode shots after and I want to show you that now. All right so we're gonna start
02:22out here with the two times camera. I'm in HEIC 24 megapixels so come out a bit. So you can see how
02:31the little f-stop is showing here. That means that I can turn this into a portrait afterwards. Okay
02:35so looking off again. Chin down just a little bit. Yep. Three two one. Keep holding that. Three two one.
02:44So in order to make this work you got to be in the 1x 2x or 4x camera and you have to make sure
02:49you're in HEIC you can't be in raw. If you're in 48 megapixels or raw it's not gonna work. Now you can
02:55go up here you'll see where it says portrait at the top. You can tap on that and then turn your
02:59regular photo into a portrait mode shot and then from there you can change the f-stop. I'd recommend
03:03leaving the f-stop around f4 to f4.5. I feel like that looks the most natural and it actually looks
03:09close to what a full frame would look like at f2.8. You should get some portrait mode shots of your shoes
03:15for sale. No! For taking. Actually let's do back against the wall. Yeah somewhere in there.
03:23Bring your maybe bring your hair around to the other side. That's better. Yeah all right let's hold
03:28that. Okay here we go three two one. Keep holding. This is a good example of that new 4x camera in 24
03:39megapixels in portrait mode. You can see how much detail there is. We've never had anything like this
03:43in an iPhone before and it's so sharp and there's so much detail and if you're watching on a 4k tv or
03:47a bigger monitor you can really see the difference here. I punched in one more time to an extreme
03:50close-up so you can see the detail levels. Now obviously the Sony A1 Mark II is better but it's
03:55still pretty good coming off the iPhone. So we've been using the new Taurus Q3 Air in the cosmic orange.
04:00It looks really good with the orange phone. I love the grippy sides and this is part of a new iPhone 17
04:04Pro 17 Pro Max lineup. Now they also sent me over the Q3 silicone. You can see what that looks like in
04:10the silver phone there and the cool thing is this has like a really nice silky soft texture but
04:14they both have that 360 o-stand ring built into the case. Of course it comes in a bunch of different
04:19colorways. They sent over the orange and the deep blue so you can see what that kind of looks like
04:23there. The Q3 Air is actually really slim considering it has this little airbag around the corners and this
04:27is for drop protection so you know when you drop this thing it's going to take an impact and you can
04:31actually see them flex here when I push in on them. So if you're clumsy you know your phone's going to be
04:34protected for drops. Now having that o-stand 360 ring built into the case is really nice because it lets you
04:39prop your phone up on your desk in horizontal or vertical positions which is perfect for watching
04:43content or hopping on FaceTime calls at your desk. Another thing I found the o-stand ring useful for
04:47is propping it up on a table for dual capture recording on the iPhone 17 Pro. I can easily get
04:52hand-free shots while unboxing or showing off new products while recording both angles and this is
04:56really handy and the cool thing is that ring is a strong magnet so you can pretty much stick it to
05:00anything metal. You can stick it to your fridge, you can stick it to a fence post, you can stick it to your
05:03car. So that means I can pretty much snap it onto anything metal, put it into horizontal, hit record and so now we're
05:09recording with the new front-facing selfie camera in horizontal with the phone sitting vertical.
05:14Now this case is also MagSafe compatible so you can snap on something like this Taurus wireless charge
05:18bank not coming off, locks into place nice and strong. So this ring is actually super useful.
05:23Outside of these airbag corners it also has a lip around the screen and a lip around the back camera
05:28module so it's fully protected. Even the buttons are covered and the camera control button as well.

05:46this rusty background because it looks really cool. So maybe we do the 1x camera for that. I have to
05:52switch lenses though. All right so we're now on the 16 to 25 and we're going to switch to the 1x camera.
06:02I don't really love 1x portraits because it's basically 24 millimeters and I always find that it looks
06:06sort of fake on the iPhone. But we'll do a couple shots and see what we get. We're going wider on
06:11these ones. So I'm going to get down a little bit lower. If you can come out to about here.

06:37what I say about the 1x camera for portraits. As long as you're shooting with intention it looks good.

07:15I'm going to show you how to get higher res portrait mode shots. So you have to be either
07:19in the 1x camera or the 4x camera and you have to be in 48 megapixels. You can't be in raw.
07:26We're going to run this through a third-party app called FOCO. So it lets you turn any photo into
07:31a portrait mode shot. So we'll set it up here. 4x camera 48 megapixels. Okay here we go. Three,
07:38two, one. Keep holding. Three, two, one. Okay. So now that wasn't a portrait mode shot. We're going to
07:46bring it into focus. Okay so it finds your face. It automatically creates a depth map. So you can
07:53change the focus to like where it happens. So we want to be on you there. And that's pretty much all
08:01you have to do. So obviously we got the 8x camera this year for the iPhone 17 Pro but you can't do a
08:08portrait mode in 8x. So what I'm going to show you here is we're going to put this into HEIC 24 megapixels
08:15and then set it to the 8x camera. Take our portrait shot here. This is a really tight head shot.
08:21There we go. Three, two, one. Hold that. Three, two, one. Boom. All right so we can take this 8x shot
08:28here. Bring it into focus. Found the face. Turn it into a portrait mode shot. Now you can obviously
08:35change the amount of depth or shallow depth of field. That's crazy. Now you go to f2.8 and there's
08:43how you do 8x portrait mode shot. So outside of the new 4x telephoto camera there's really not a
08:51lot to report when it comes to portrait mode. It's still doing a great job with skin tones. It's still
08:55doing a pretty good job with hair cut out and it's really good with color. And I mentioned this last
08:59year in the iPhone 16 Pro and that carries through to the iPhone 17 Pro. So you're seeing exactly what's
09:04coming out of the iPhone 17 Pro. There's no adjustments and no edits to the color. And when it
09:08comes to my Sony A1 Mark II all I did was adjust the exposure and white balance to match. So you're
09:12seeing the colors that are coming straight out of both devices and they're actually pretty similar
09:16which is kind of wild. Now obviously shooting on a pro camera I can do presets and do way more with
09:21the raw files. But this is just a good test to show what it's like side by side. All right guys that's

09:50with 4x here is you can actually pinch and zoom and you get a 5x shot out of that. So this is at
09:56like 120 millimeters now which is what we got on the iPhone 16 Pro. Somehow that's still 24 megapixels.
