Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad addresses the diplomatic dilemma surrounding a potential visit by US President Donald Trump to Malaysia.

While acknowledging that US tariffs, especially during the Trump administration have hurt Malaysia’s exports, including key industries like rubber gloves, hs makes it clear that economic interests must not come at the expense of moral principles.

He argues that America’s repeated vetoes against ceasefire resolutions in Gaza, both under Trump and his predecessor Joe Biden, make it difficult for Malaysia, a nation that rejects genocide and has never recognised Israel to welcome leaders seen as complicit.

00:00America is a very powerful nation.
00:03We can't just break off relation with such a powerful nation.
00:08Do you think that it would actually affect our economy as well,
00:14global economy or regional economy as well,
00:17not welcoming the American president?
00:20Well, Trump has raised the tariff on Malaysian exports.
00:27Obviously, this affects our market.
00:32We produce gloves, for example,
00:35and now the gloves are subjected to high tariffs.
00:40But of course, there are ways and means to overcome that,
00:47but it takes time.
00:49And the thing is that when there is high tariff,
00:56it is actually affecting the cost of living in America
01:02because everything that comes in is taxed.
01:06And if you use the imported goods,
01:11you have to pay a higher price.
01:13So that will affect America's people, American people,
01:18as well as the industries.
01:21Because we know that America imports a lot of components
01:27for their products from outside, particularly microchips.
01:32Do you think he should still come or do you think we should say no to Donald Trump?
01:43I think he should not come here because he actually backs the genocide in Gaza.
01:52That we cannot accept.
01:54When everybody else wanted a ceasefire,
01:58America under Donald Trump and even under the previous Biden,
02:05they vetoed the resolution.
02:10Multiple times.
02:12Should we actually even be interacting with those who are complicit with the genocide,
02:22countries that are supporting the genocide?
02:25We have no dealings with people who are involved with the genocide.
02:32Malaysia never recognized Israel.
02:37Of course, Malaysia has had dealings with the United States of America.
02:43America is a very powerful nation.
02:46We can't just break off relations with such a powerful nation.
02:52We have to find other ways of overcoming the problems caused by Trump
03:00to come with his idea.
