One of the most common nightmare scenarios is being chased by someone, and you struggle to move your legs, as if you were dragging enormous weights. The fact is, the part of the brain responsible for dreams doesn't have access to the storage compartments where our many skills are stored. In other words, we seem to remember that we're a good runner, but when we want to speed up, the "dream" part of the brain gets confused. It simply doesn't know how to lift your legs or which muscles need to be engaged. And so, it leaves you to be devoured by the monster.
