00:01President of the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce, Kieran Singh, says Southerners are awaiting the budget to learn of any news relating to the restart of the Petruchin refinery.
00:11Speaking to TV6 News today, Singh says setting up a refinery review committee was one of the first things the new government did on taking office, and they're hoping the budget will bring positive news.
00:22We know that it is a challenge based on the time that it has been shut down and of course the logistics and so on, but we know that the committee has been working on it, and the members are really eagerly anticipating that the downstream industries that normally support the refinery operations will automatically start.
00:42That will generate employment, it will generate investment into plant, machinery, equipment, and it will create that multiply effect for South Trinidad to start seeing some income generation.
00:55Singh says members are hopeful that with a new government and a minister of finance, new policies and fiscal measures will come, and said while it is expected the government puts emphasis on deep water exploration of the oil and gas sector,
01:09simultaneously diversifying the economy is vital.
01:14We really ramp up how the world sees Trinidad and Tobago as a tourist destination in terms of hotel room availability and flights to come into the country and of course exit Trinidad and Tobago.
01:30Eco-tourism especially from the San Fernando perspective, we have the San Fernando Hill, we have a safe water harbor for the yachties,
01:35we can encourage cruise ships to enter San Fernando instead of staying in Puerto Spain, we have the mud volcanoes, we have so many natural habitats that foreigners like to visit.
