'Extraordinary news': World breathes sigh of relief at Israel-Hamas peace deal

Much of the international community has called on all parties involved to respect the deal and its terms in their entirety, working to achieve a lasting peace that will bring an end to more than two years of fighting.

00:00Reactions have poured in from world leaders after the announcement of a U.S.-brokered
00:05ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas agreeing to implement the first phase of President
00:11Trump's peace plan for Gaza.
00:14The deal arrived at the end of the third day of indirect peace talks between Israeli and
00:18Hamas negotiators in talks mediated by Egypt, Qatar and Turkey in the Egyptian resort city
00:24of Sharm el-Sheikh.
00:26European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the deal in a post on X and
00:31urged all parties involved to fully uphold its terms.
00:36UN Secretary-General António Guterres also praised the two parties for striking a deal
00:41and pledged the UN scale-up in the provision of aid to Gaza's population.
00:46UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the news of the deal brought, quote, profound relief
00:51and vowed his country support in what he called the crucial next steps.
00:57Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also welcomed the deal, but noted that important work lies
01:02ahead to achieve a lasting peace, adding that Madrid will be involved to help ensure the
01:07atrocities experienced are never repeated.
01:10Australia's Prime Minister Antony Albanese said the deal is a positive step forward, but stressed
01:16that Gaza's road to recovery is long and expressed hope that it will lead to a two-state solution
01:22plan on the UN-approved 1967 lines.
