FAILED WINGSUIT BASE JUMP LANDS MAN IN ROAD
WITH VID
BY SALONI MATHUR
Watch this exhilarating video of a wingsuit base jumper losing control of his flight and crashing in the middle of a highway in Rio.
Wingsuit base jumping is an extreme sport where a person jumps from a fixed object and uses a special wingsuit to glide horizontally before deploying a parachute for a safe landing.
Sean Dame is a 32-year-old professional skydiver who decided to base jump from Pedra da Gavea in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Apart from high winds, there is also limited landing space, potential for obstacles, and the extreme skill and experience required to manage the jump in a complex tropical environment.
This was Sean’s third jump from Gavea in 24 hours, and he sustained some small injuries and a fractured heel from the crash but is now okay.
Sean Dame from Utah, USA, explains the situation: “I was flying too low and not as efficiently as I wanted.
“I thought if I made it closer to the beach, I could be in a better position.
“Unfortunately, I put myself in a tight spot with little room to correct potential line twists.
“Long story short, I shouldn’t have been jumping Gavea with my current experience level and wingsuit.
“This was my third time jumping Gavea in 24 hours, and I guess the third time isn’t always the charm.
“Next time, I will be in a bigger suit, have way more experience and always be flying higher and faster.
“As soon as I am healed, I will be spending as much time as I can improving my Wingsuit abilities.
“I was lucky to get away with only a fractured heel.”
