Merseyside Police has launched a new video warning about the growing threat of cybercrime
00:06
while highlighting a free tool called Police Cyber Alarm.
00:09
It's designed to protect businesses, charities and public sector organisations across the UK.
00:15
The release comes during Cyber Security Awareness Month,
00:18
reminding everyone that keeping online systems safe is a shared responsibility.
00:22
High-profile cyber attacks have shown how hackers can disrupt services,
00:26
steal sensitive data and cause serious financial damage.
00:29
And it's not just big organisations at risk.
00:32
Any small businesses and charities struggle to defend themselves due to limited budgets or technical know-how.
00:38
In Merseyside alone, 682 cybercrimes were reported in 2024.
00:45
While that may not sound huge, nationally, cyber attacks can cost businesses thousands of pounds,
00:50
and many crimes go unreported.
00:52
Detective Sergeant Danny Gavin from the Merseyside Cybercrime Unit says,
00:56
Cybercrime affects organisations of every size, and defending against it requires a collective approach.
01:02
Police Cyber Alarm helps Merseyside organisations strengthen their defences, and it's completely free.
01:08
The system works by monitoring threats through a secure server without interrupting day-to-day operations.
01:14
When new cyber threats are detected, all members get immediate alerts, helping them act before criminals strike.
01:20
One early adopter, West Kirby Grammar School, has already seen the benefits.
01:26
Their IT administrator says the installation was simple, and threat reports have been invaluable.
01:31
Detective Sergeant Gavin urges all businesses, charities, and public sector organisations in Merseyside to sign up,
01:38
saying the more organisations that join, the stronger the UK's collective cyberdefence has become.
