Australian professor among trio awarded Nobel prize for Chemistry

A Melbourne professor is one of three people to be awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Richard Robson’s work developing metal-organic frameworks could inform projects to reduce greenhouse gases.

00:15The University of Melbourne's Richard Robson has been recognised for his work developing metal organic frameworks.

00:21Metal organic frameworks are a new class of solids being developed into gas and energy storage devices

00:27and other potentially revolutionary products.

00:30They can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide or store toxic gases.

00:36Scientists say there is potential for this to lead to materials that capture greenhouse gases and reduce emissions.

00:43People are always excited about the real-world applications and they're probably at the cusp of being realised

00:48that they could involve gas capture, gas storage and better ways to maybe potentially handle dangerous gases

00:56such as carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases, right through to potentially capturing gases that have unique uses

01:02such as anaesthetics and volatile anaesthetics.

01:05The 88-year-old Professor Robson has been a lecturer and researcher at the University of Melbourne since 1966.

01:12He produced the first metal organic frameworks in the early 1990s and has continued to explore different forms ever since.

01:19His colleagues say he's the quintessential scientist, unassuming, and today focused on experiments in the lab.
