00:00Ah, son of a bitch.
00:04Fearless drivers risk everything.
00:06Out here, you can freeze to death.
00:08Either you can just try not to die.
00:10Chasing big paydays.
00:12I'll make it work. If I get back hauls, I get double the money.
00:14To haul in crucial supplies.
00:17I'm ready to roll.
00:18Before the opportunity
00:19melts away under their chained tires.
00:25Woo!
00:26This season, veterans return.
00:29No hesitation. No practice run.
00:31Back to bumping up and down.
00:33See if an old man still got what it takes to get the job done.
00:36And rookies emerge.
00:37This is going to be one hell of a ride.
00:39Yeah!
00:40A new company reigns.
00:42Musky Creek, we have a very good reputation.
00:44We don't leave a load behind.
00:45While another confronts legacy.
00:48I started this business to pass it down to my boys.
00:50That was always the plan.
00:51I was introduced to trucking
00:53probably from birth.
00:55The winter window is shorter than ever.
00:58You gotta get going.
00:59Pull out!
00:59Pull out.
01:00Pull some ass.
01:01Forcing everyone to burn at both ends.
01:03It's exhausting when you can't get warm.
01:06Feel beat up, chewed up, and spit out.
01:08Aww!
01:09Fighting an unrelenting battle.
01:11Ow!
01:12Out all the way open.
01:14Where, where, where, where, where, where, where!
01:15Against the unforgiving wilderness.
01:19I'm just so afraid that I've got frostbite somewhere.
01:23Out here, it's me versus nature.
01:25On the western hemisphere's northern frontier,
01:39the race is on.
01:42You're going into the bush.
01:45It's you against mother nature.
01:47Mother nature is unpredictable.
01:50And the most ambitious company on the ice roads
01:53is Muskie Creek.
01:55My problem right now is, is that we have so much forecasted right now
02:01and so many commitments, I'm short on drivers.
02:04We've got seven loads to load tomorrow.
02:07My name is Bill Dan, and I'm the operations manager here at Muskie Creek.
02:11Apparently, there's an air leak on the air tank.
02:15Did anybody do anything about it?
02:17Our primary goal is to service northern communities via winter road access.
02:23With about six weeks of winter roads,
02:26we have to slam these loads in as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
02:30Some of the communities that we go to,
02:32their only source to get food, building materials,
02:35is by winter roads.
02:36It's crucial, in that short window that we have,
02:43we get as much freight up into those communities
02:46so that they can sustain for the next year.
02:52Bill?
02:53Todd?
02:54Nice to meet you, buddy.
02:55Nice to meet you.
02:56Yeah.
02:56I've heard a lot about you.
02:59I'm Todd Dewey, and I come from a little town called Port Angeles, Washington.
03:06Sweet!
03:07After spending five, six years up here being on the ice roads,
03:11you know, it becomes a part of you.
03:16I got four beautiful daughters at home,
03:19and they were at that age where they needed dad around,
03:21so I kind of took a step back from the ice roads a little bit.
03:24The last nine years of my life, I have really focused on family, home.
03:29Now that I'm an empty nester and the daughters are gone,
03:32it's like the ice roads have been calling me.
03:34Todd, Todd.
03:35I'm taking on this challenge this year because I have a chance to actually make some money,
03:41build a nest egg back for me and my wife now, and buying my own big rig.
03:45Musky Creek, we have a very good reputation.
03:49Whatever we commit to, we fulfill.
03:51We don't leave a load behind.
03:52So Garden Hill is where your load's going to be going.
03:55Okay.
03:55Then from there, you're going to cross the ice.
03:58Yep.
03:58Then you're going to travel down here to St. Teresa Point.
04:00That's going to be where I need you to pick up the back hole.
04:02Okay.
04:02You got it.
04:03Todd's burning 800 miles to Garden Hill.
04:06Then he's crossing Island Lake to pick up his back hole in St. Teresa Point.
04:12It's loaded.
04:13It's ready.
04:13It's secured.
04:14Just a load of screw piles.
04:15They go into the ground.
04:16You can't start the building until those are in, right?
04:18There's a housing shortage in Garden Hill, so all loads, materials, it's all critical.
04:23Gotcha.
04:2410-4.
04:25My biggest concern is that he may have lost his edge.
04:30I really can't afford any mistakes to happen.
04:34You know, I'm coming up here with a super set of skills that not a lot of guys have.
04:42I'm 51 years old.
04:44I don't know if I've got what it takes anymore to do these roads,
04:46but I'm going to hit it hard, and I'm going to see if I can make myself some good coin.
04:50Am I nervous?
04:52Absolutely.
04:53See if an old man's still got what it takes to get the job done.
04:59600 frozen miles to the north.
05:03I am kind of nervous today to see what we find.
05:06Sean Harris, owner of Harris & Sons Transportation,
05:10is checking the ice thickness on Wollaston Lake to see if it's safe for big rigs.
05:15We're going to drill a hole or two and check the thickness
05:18and know how long before we're going to be able to go across that crossing with large loads.
05:27The Wollaston Lake community is only accessible by boat,
05:31or a 25-mile ice road when the lake freezes.
05:35They've had so much snow into Wollaston, it ended up insulating the ice.
05:39The ice would not thicken up.
05:40It wouldn't form properly.
05:41We're way behind on getting the roads ready to go for our heavy loads to cross them.
05:53My name is Sean Harris.
05:54I'm 51 years old, and I own a trucking business in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
05:57When I started this business, I called it Harris Logging and Transport.
06:03Years down the road, when the boys got involved, I changed it to Sean Harris' sons.
06:08At a young age, 17, 18, I went and got my license,
06:12and right out of trucking school, within three days,
06:15I was on the ice roads in northern Saskatchewan, and it was trial by fire.
06:21This is my 32nd winter on the ice roads.
06:23At this point now, we have 12 trucks.
06:26My company would take jobs that other people wouldn't touch with a tentacle pole.
06:30I've held some of the biggest recorded loads across the ice.
06:38The Wollaston run is very dangerous,
06:40because the water is always moving there.
06:43That's generally where the thinnest ice is.
06:45We're hoping today, when we punch through, we have over 20 inches.
06:56Optimum is 33 to 38 inches to haul what we haul on here.
06:59First and foremost, you're looking at the thickness to see how much ice there is.
07:11You want to look for the quality of the ice.
07:15You want it to kind of have a nice, clear look to it.
07:18This doesn't look like it's rotten or anything at the top.
07:24Find the bottom of the ice, right there.
07:2618, give or take.
07:32We're in trouble.
07:33We may not get in here this winter.
07:36It's always a stress, business-wise.
07:39I think the biggest stress is just the communities.
07:41And they can't get their stuff in there.
07:43They suffer.
07:44They're out of fuel right now.
07:45They're flying fuel in, because they can't get across here,
07:47when normally we'd be hauling across here weeks ago.
07:50We're running out of time.
07:51Ah!
07:56Back at Muskie Creek, another ice road veteran is joining the team.
08:05Hey, that's me, Bill.
08:06Letha.
08:07Finally, nice to meet you.
08:08You guys are, like, top dogs in town.
08:10You got, like, the most trucks, the most loads.
08:12We're at 32 trucks.
08:13Pounding about 500 loads per year.
08:15For, like, the last decade, I've been still trucking on the ice roads,
08:22but I bought my own truck, and I started my own business.
08:25Whoa!
08:27Well, that was interesting.
08:29Freezing wind, endless miles, and jobs that no one else will take.
08:34Well, I can't.
08:35I mean, oh, I'm going to jackknife.
08:37Ah!
08:38Oh, my gosh.
08:41I got a farm in Wasilla in Alaska, with two acres and 11 horses on it.
08:47Can you move any?
08:49Yay, good girl!
08:51Currently, my truck is sitting broken in the shop in Fairbanks, and it's not running.
08:56I need, like, a lot of money really fast to get it going.
08:59And these are the hardest ice roads, so I'm going to make more on them, and that's why I'm here.
09:04The worst-case scenario is if I don't make the money to fix the truck, I'm going to have to start selling horses.
09:12Garden Hill is where you're going to.
09:14There's going to be lots of hills to climb.
09:16Okay.
09:17Most important question, what am I driving?
09:21Dang!
09:23So Kenworth!
09:25Nice!
09:27Call that.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Lisa's also running the 800-mile gauntlet to the remote community of Garden Hill.
09:36I just can't afford to not have the wheels turning.
09:46Plunging deeper into the frozen wilderness.
09:49We have a lot of miles to go today.
09:51Don Dewey is battling his first winter road in almost a decade.
09:56The road is in rough, rough shape.
09:57There's a lot of pieces on here.
10:05Heavy items.
10:06If they fall off, there's no way I'm going to manually and physically put them back on my load.
10:13Getting a lot worse now, buddy.
10:18Feel that right there?
10:20Yeah.
10:21Yeah.
10:21That's getting rough.
10:23That's getting rough.
10:27And I have definitely got something going on with my load in the back.
10:37Drill bed's sticking out about a foot on the passenger side.
10:40This is not good.
10:41See, there's cold.
10:51Well, this is screwed.
10:52This wood beam has slid out of here almost a foot.
10:58Here's a better visual.
10:59Let's get the wood that's slid this far.
11:01But half the problem is it's so cold and the deck is so slick and these pieces of wood are just sliding right on the deck.
11:07If it pushes too hard and slides with too much momentum and breath busts these straps, that whole thing's just going to slide right off the sides and this whole pallet of these drill butts are on the middle of the ice road.
11:18That's not good.
11:19Well, I got an idea in my head.
11:24I don't know if it'll work, but it sure is worth a try.
11:30There it goes.
11:32Oh, you've got to love the ice roads, right?
11:36Okay.
11:36Now, we can link these two together.
11:41It's a double lock.
11:42Pull the slack out.
11:43Pull the slack out.
11:43Pull the slack out.
11:47Pull the slack out.
11:49Double link that.
11:56Those are balanced.
11:58In theory, as I'm backing the truck up, that chain's going to come tight and it's going to pull that load down the trailer.
12:04That's what I'm hoping will happen.
12:08Okay, this is it.
12:09But we're going to give her a hell and give her a try.
12:12I hope this works.
12:19In the frigid northern frontier.
12:24At Muskie Creek headquarters.
12:29Gentlemen, looking for Bill.
12:31You must be Scott.
12:32Yes, sir.
12:32It's Scooter Ewell's first haul at a new company.
12:36Back home, he's an ice road veteran.
12:38But in these parts, he's a rookie.
12:41Looking forward to working with you this year.
12:42Are you sure about that?
12:43Is there something that you've got to tell me that I don't know all that?
12:45I live in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
12:52I own a couple trucks.
12:54I've been in business now five years.
12:56Trucking wasn't after calling for me.
12:58For me, being out on the road on a job, it's a sense of accomplishment, especially when you deliver to northern communities.
13:05And I also own Harley's Hard Rock Saloon.
13:09It's a bar in Yellowknife.
13:12This is my bar.
13:13You know, it's a community water hole.
13:16A lot of the ice road drivers, they will come to our bar.
13:19They love it.
13:20They have a great time.
13:22My wife, Kelly, and my daughter, Morgan, both work at my bar.
13:26And I have two daughters in Nova Scotia, Bianca and Zoe.
13:30And I'm praying for the best of them all the time.
13:33I really need this season to go well.
13:35In order to provide the cash to do the upgrades up there at the bar.
13:39You are clean and clear to go to Red Sucker Lake.
13:42You've been to Red Sucker Lake?
13:43No, sir.
13:43I haven't been in any of these ice routes.
13:45So this is all new territory for me.
13:48That's what kind of truck you're going to give me to.
13:50She hauls ass.
13:51Nice.
13:52Yeah.
13:53This International is a very special truck to Muskie Creek.
13:59Okay.
13:59The driver that was assigned this truck, East Service Muskie Creek,
14:03for a very long time.
14:05Two years ago, Erwin Friesen, we lost him.
14:10Erwin Friesen was a big part of Muskie Creek.
14:14He is one of the biggest reasons why Muskie Creek is where we're at today.
14:20He passed away two years ago when he was on duty doing a load.
14:24Sounds like some pretty big shoes to fill.
14:26I hope to make you proud and I'll be honored to drive her.
14:30Looking forward to working with you.
14:31He's built a little bit of confidence in me, but talk is cheap.
14:37Scooter's first foray on these ice roads is an 800-mile adventure to the northern community
14:43of Red Sucker Lake.
14:45Well, now we're going to check this load out, see what we're working with,
14:49making sure that nothing has kind of come off.
14:53The key thing is keeping your deck clean.
14:55Imagine that flying through your windshield.
14:57That'll kill somebody.
14:57And this here has to go.
15:00Each driver is responsible for securing their load, confirming it's safe and legal.
15:0614-6 from about to ruin Bill's day.
15:10Anything over 12 feet needs a pilot truck.
15:13We can't haul this load.
15:15He's not going to like this.
15:16And none are available anytime soon.
15:19We got some problems.
15:21What's the issue?
15:2114-6 is the issue.
15:2414-6.
15:26That's the width.
15:2714-6 is how wide we are.
15:30Yes, sir.
15:32Are you sure?
15:33Is that from the tracks or the blade?
15:38It doesn't look 14-6.
15:4214-6!
15:43I really wish you didn't f*** to my car flicks this morning, eh?
15:48You're going to learn to hate me or love me.
15:54400 miles to the northwest.
15:56I'm looking for the crews that are flooding to try and thicken the ice.
16:04Sean Harris is meeting the ice road maintenance crew.
16:08To build the road, the crew spends weeks plowing snow and checking the ice thickness.
16:14Where the ice is thin, they use lake water to thicken it.
16:19The fate of Sean's business depends on their progress.
16:23If the ice doesn't get any thicker, the community, they're not going to be able to get supplies like that in.
16:30And this road is very vital.
16:32It's the only lifeline in the wintertime for this community.
16:37How many holes are you guys going to drill?
16:39Two.
16:40Two for now?
16:41So what they're doing here is they've got thin spots where it's only 17 inches.
16:45So they drill holes.
16:47And now we're going to fire up the generator and we're going to start flooding this section of ice that's thin here, right?
16:51Yeah.
16:52Let's rock and roll.
16:56There we go!
16:57There we go!
16:57You can see what the boys are doing, putting water on existing ice.
17:03And they'll keep doing that and doing that and they'll build levels.
17:05And that's how we grow the ice.
17:08How long will you guys let this run here?
17:11Until she reaches the edges?
17:13And that's all you'll do today or will you drill another couple of holes and pump some more?
17:17Tomorrow.
17:18Tomorrow?
17:19We are late in the season.
17:22If you went across here loaded, you would absolutely go in the drink.
17:24It's just not thick enough.
17:25These guys are working overtime, trying to get a road open so their community can get the supplies in that they need.
17:33Halfway through his first run and not getting any closer.
17:45It's about to get real.
17:47Veteran driver Todd Dewey is gambling on an old trucker trick to slide tons of steel screw files back on his trailer.
17:55Come on, you son of a bitch.
17:56The road pounded a pallet of foundation screws over the edge.
18:01That's getting rough.
18:03Now, the fastest fix is ice road ingenuity.
18:08Okay, here we go, boys.
18:09F***ing yeah.
18:25Looks like it moved.
18:28F***ing yeah.
18:30It slid right here.
18:31You can see this block.
18:32See how far that block is sticking out?
18:34This block was sticking quite out here, so this whole thing is now slid right back into position.
18:39Now I'm going to re-rig it, and I'm going to try to do the same thing to the front and get it pulled over.
18:44Tell you what, I'd like being in the bush and figure s*** out.
18:46That's why I love being on the ice roads.
18:51All right.
18:52Re-rigging.
18:56Okay.
18:57Round two.
18:57Round two.
19:27Oh, hell yeah.
19:29We are back on the trailer.
19:32That's what the ice roads are all about, baby.
19:34Figure s*** out and just get it done.
19:39Get my load strapped and hit back on the road.
19:48I'm ready to roll.
19:49Mission accomplished, baby.
19:52My load is nice and straight back there.
19:54Ready to put some miles on here and get this load into Garden Hill.
19:58Just another beautiful day on the ice roads.
20:00I am hitting the ground running.
20:16Deep in the frigid wilderness.
20:18No hesitations.
20:19No practice runs.
20:21That first road.
20:22Knock it out.
20:23Lisa Kelly is one of the first drivers facing a freshly frozen river crossing.
20:28Nelson River, East Channel.
20:37I'm not sure where the river begins here.
20:39There's so much snow on the ice, I can't tell what condition the ice is in right now.
20:47If it's clear ice, it's a better quality of ice and holds more weight.
20:55If it's like white ice, there's more air in it, so it's more likely to crash.
21:00First one of a while, so I'm a little nervous on it, you know?
21:07We'll see.
21:08We'll see how this goes.
21:11All right.
21:12Let's do this.
21:13Let's do this.
21:17On a frozen northern river.
21:34Wow, that does not look good.
21:37A deceptive expanse of untested ice separates Lisa Kelly from her offload.
21:43The best strategy I have for a lake crossing is listening for the cracking.
21:52I'm going to go with slower.
21:55I'd rather be safe than sorry.
21:58The ice is supposed to make the cracking sounds, but how much is too much cracking, right?
22:02Because it's got a crack to fall through, so there's got to be a certain limit on cracking sounds.
22:08Is that an ice sign?
22:11Do you see that?
22:13A blanket of fresh snow covers the road and thin ice surrounding her,
22:18obscuring the border between safety and certain death.
22:23Danger.
22:24Open water.
22:25Good gosh.
22:26It's like that whole section is like open water.
22:32What makes this any thicker here?
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:34Here.
22:35Here.
22:35Here.
22:35Here.
22:36Here.
22:36Here.
22:36Here.
22:37Here.
22:37Here.
22:38Here.
22:38Here.
22:39Here.
22:39Here.
22:40Here.
22:40Here.
22:41Here.
22:41Here.
22:42Here.
22:42Here.
22:42Here.
22:43Here.
22:44Go fast.
22:44I'm almost there.
22:45Don't go fast.
22:46Huh.
22:47Here.
22:47Don't go fast.
22:52First ice crossing of the year out of the way.
22:55Here we come for more.
22:56Back at Muskie Creek
23:11It's 14-6 wide
23:13What the
23:13Scooter's stuck in the truck yard
23:16Until his wide load is legal
23:19If we take the blades off
23:20We're no trouble
23:22Beautiful
23:23That's why you're the pro
23:25You're talking about a wide guy
23:27With a wide load
23:27I know my wings
23:28So then where are your flags?
23:30I'm wearing my ears
23:31Get the wings off, boys
23:34On the road, problems start to arise
23:38Man, there's only so much
23:40I can do from the office
23:41It's up to the driver
23:43They have to be
23:44The solution to the problem
23:46And we're golden
23:48There's my sage
23:55I always keep a smudge kit with me
23:58What's back on?
23:59Sweet grass
24:00I'm new to smudging
24:04I've been doing it for the last few years now
24:06I've been digging into my history
24:07And I'm pretty proud of it
24:09I'm Mick Mack
24:11Mick Ma actually is pronounced
24:13From the east coast
24:14There's a reason why they were called
24:17The first nations
24:17They were the first ones
24:18And they know how to survive off the land
24:21And I like learning from it
24:22For me, it keeps me grounded
24:25It keeps me centered
24:25It keeps me going
24:26It gives me hope
24:28Got a heart doing a truck
24:31We're going to pray
24:34The rest of our trips are blessed
24:36Spirit of Irvin
24:40Better keep on my good side
24:42Scooter!
24:43We've got to get going
24:44Let's get out of here
24:45Pull up
24:46We're rolling out
24:51Copy
24:52Where's love?
25:06Finally
25:06I'm feeling much alive
25:09I'm feeling much better
25:10I'm feeling happy now
25:13Heading into Garden Hill
25:25In the remote island lake region
25:27Garden Hill
25:28Finally made it
25:30Todd's racing to offload
25:3145,000 pounds of steel
25:34So he can cross the lake
25:35And pick up another load
25:37By the end of the day
25:38I'm going to get this thing unloaded
25:40Right back out on the ice roads
25:42I've got to turn and burn
25:46I've got another load
25:46I've got to get picked up
25:47Delivered right away
25:48Let's get this load off of here
25:51I don't know how this is going to work
25:55We're about to find out
25:56The problem with unloading this
25:58Is the forklift is not big enough
25:59To move these pallets
26:00Off the back of this trailer
26:01We're going to grab this whole pallet
26:03See if we just slide a whole pallet
26:05At one time
26:05Right onto the ground
26:06I guess we'll try that
26:09See what happens
26:13Go back
26:17In the remote northern community
26:33Of Garden Hill
26:34Veteran driver Todd Dewey
26:41Is racing to turn and burn
26:42So he can pick up
26:44His next load
26:45It's a little messy
26:46But it worked
26:46Can't damage these things
26:49Due to the fact
26:49They're just solid steel
26:50I thought this was the only way
26:51We're going to be able
26:52To get it unloaded
26:52With the machines that we had
26:53Let's get the hell out of here
27:07I got another ice road to do
27:08Came up with a good solution
27:11For the bush didn't we
27:12Nicely done
27:14450 miles to the west
27:22Sean Harris is strategizing
27:30With his business partners
27:32Sons Riley
27:33And Zach
27:34My boys
27:35They've both been driving
27:36Since they were five years old
27:37And at 15
27:38Probably knew more than guys
27:39Who've been doing it 20 years
27:40They need a plan
27:42To salvage the season
27:43If the Wollaston Lake crossing
27:45Doesn't open
27:46Wish I could sit in Mexico
27:48As much as you do
27:49Riley is a mini me
27:51And that's not
27:52Generally a good thing
27:53One day when you have
27:5532 years under your
27:56F***ing belts
27:56Then you can go to Mexico too
27:58I had that under my belt
28:00Before I was 20
28:01Oh this f***ing guy
28:03He is hot tempered
28:05But he's a hard worker
28:07And he'll do whatever
28:08He has to do
28:09To get the job done
28:10You gotta have a couple
28:11Handsome capable
28:13Sons for you
28:13Can do that
28:14Zach is the exact opposite
28:17To myself
28:18And his younger brother
28:20Riley
28:20Zach is probably
28:22One of the most
28:22Relaxed
28:23Easy going guys
28:24You'll ever meet
28:25We've had lots of snow
28:26Up north
28:27So
28:27Chris
28:28Piss off
28:31Chris beat my third sign
28:33As a pot belly pig
28:34When we got him
28:36He was no bigger
28:37Than a loaf of bread
28:38Keep going
28:40Now he's about 250 pounds
28:42And he used to ride
28:43In the semi
28:44With me all the time
28:45He absolutely loved it
28:46He'd put his little feet
28:46Up on the dash
28:47And look out the window
28:48Like I don't have enough
28:49Problems in my life
28:50Wallston is
28:53Absolutely closed right now
28:54And I'm
28:55Getting extremely nervous
28:58The season is going to be a short one
29:00We've had an ungodly amount of snow this year
29:03When you get a lot of snow early
29:05It insulates the water
29:07So then those cold temperatures
29:09Can't absorb to freeze
29:11As fast and as hard as we need it
29:13So I think right now
29:14We're going to do some things
29:15That we don't normally do this time of year
29:17Yep
29:17We'll do what we've got to do
29:19We're going to have a tough winter
29:21Approaching Island Lake
29:28Outside Garden Hill
29:29Ice crossing just opened up
29:31It's only open for light traffic
29:34Which means it's not open for full wage yet
29:36Veteran driver Todd Dewey
29:38Is facing a 13 mile lake crossing
29:40On ice barely thick enough
29:43To hold his empty truck
29:44That's kind of spooky
29:47If you think about it
29:49It's been ice
30:05Means anything can happen
30:12Here we go
30:13He's on a deadline
30:15To pick up a backhaul today
30:17That's going to Musky Creek
30:19And the fastest way
30:21To St. Teresa Point
30:22Is across the lake
30:25The ice is not as thick
30:27As it's supposed to be
30:28But we have a will in place
30:29Set up for your family
30:30Because most likely
30:31You ain't making her home
30:31That's what could go wrong
30:32It's life and death up here
30:43I'm a little concerned right now
30:45I'm not hearing a lot of noise
30:47Out of the ice
30:48The cracking of the ice
30:53Is always spooky
30:53But that's part of the ice crossing
30:55You want to hear cracking
30:56That actually means that the ice
30:58Is really, really strong
30:59When you can't hear any noise at all
31:02That's not a good sign
31:03I don't like that
31:06I don't like that one single bit
31:08Not at all
31:09Cracking sounds
31:12Indicate the ice is flexing
31:14To relieve stress
31:15From the truck's weight
31:16If the ice is too thin
31:20Or too weak
31:20To flex under the stress
31:22It could shatter
31:24Releasing Todd
31:25And his truck
31:26Into the clutches
31:27Of the deadly frigid depths
31:30And...
31:39On the ice
31:41Hell yeah
31:43Go get my next load
31:47Turn and burn
31:47On the other side of the lake
32:01I'm headed to Garden Hill
32:04With some building supplies
32:06For the communities
32:07The hills are very abrupt
32:11Because it's not a road
32:12There's no, like, grades
32:13Like they didn't build it
32:15To be driven
32:16So when you come upon a hill
32:18It's not smooth
32:20And it's really abrupt
32:21And sharp
32:21The Musky Creek truck
32:23Is getting a beat down
32:25As Lisa faces
32:26A final series of hills
32:28Standing between her
32:29And the offload
32:30A little rowdy at the moment
32:32It's supposed to get worse
32:33What was that?
32:43Fair noise
32:44I gotta check this out
32:46And this is a horrible place to do
32:47It sounds like it's under the hood
32:50It's really loud right here
32:54Oh, good lord
33:08Oh, there's the bottle
33:15The road came up
33:31The road to Garden Hill
33:32A little rowdy at the moment
33:36Battered Lisa
33:38Battered Lisa
33:38And her truck
33:38And knocked out the hose
33:41That moves compressed air
33:43From the turbo
33:43To the engine
33:44Without the turbo
33:46She doesn't have the torque
33:48Or the power
33:48To pull her load
33:50Over the hills
33:51Thank goodness
33:52The hose clamp is still there
33:53My gosh
33:54I actually think
33:55I'm going to have to
33:56Turn the truck off
33:56Because there's pressure
33:57Coming out of there
33:58I might not be able
34:00To get it on
34:01But turning the truck off
34:04Is kind of a bush no-no
34:05Because it might not start again
34:07As the engine cools
34:16In the unforgiving temperatures
34:17Diesel fuel thickens
34:21Like day-old Thanksgiving gravy
34:23Preventing the truck
34:25From restarting
34:25Restarting
34:26Easy, tiger
34:34Okay
34:37The cold
34:41I've got to get out of the way
34:46I wonder how I
34:51I'm kind of in a hurry
34:53Because I want to get out
34:54Of the way of the truck
34:55And I want to make
34:55My truck cools down too much
34:57And that's going to
34:59Really screw me
35:00Get the truck started here
35:06All right, love
35:08You ready?
35:11Because it's cold
35:12Get the body out
35:18Oh, all right
35:22It's cold
35:29Started
35:35I'm going to get out
35:38Of this guy's way
35:39Okay, I feel really bad
35:45For holding up
35:46On that loose
35:47Skinny spot, of course
35:48All right
35:51Back to bumping up
35:52And down here
36:06Back across the lake
36:08So I finally made it
36:11Into St. Therese Point
36:12Here
36:13It's always exciting
36:14To get in a backhaul
36:15But that just means
36:16You're actually getting
36:16Paid for the way back
36:17To you
36:17Not just the way there
36:18So double paycheck
36:20I'll take that
36:20Any day of the week
36:21Todd's picking up a boat
36:23To haul back
36:24To Musky Creek
36:25For repair
36:26Hi
36:27Hi, I'm Todd
36:28Nice to meet you
36:28Hi
36:29This is an isolated community
36:32We usually go
36:33From one community
36:34To another community
36:35Using those boats
36:36It's very important
36:38The only way we get things
36:40Delivered
36:40That's just like Santa
36:43The trailer
36:46Is this wide
36:47And the boat
36:49Is this wide
36:50There's no margin
36:51For error
36:51Okay
36:55Let's go real slow
36:56It easy
36:57Keep going
37:01You're good
37:02That's just making me nervous
37:05I know
37:06Me too
37:06Go ahead
37:11You're okay
37:11Come on
37:12Keep coming
37:13Keep coming
37:15You want it to turn
37:16As you're going on
37:16Like that
37:17Go
37:18Go
37:19Go
37:19Go
37:19Just hang tight
37:22Right there
37:22For a minute
37:23Yeah
37:24We need to get this
37:26Straightened out
37:27It's working
37:32This is a lot of work
37:39Who said the ice roads
37:40Are easy, right?
37:42The boat pickup
37:43Was a little bit more
37:44Than what I expected
37:45I'm tired
37:48Okay stop
37:49It's been a long day
37:51The boat is loaded
37:53And I'm done
37:54Gosh
37:56That was a lot
37:56Of frickin' work
37:57You got a lot
38:01Of ice road
38:01Left to go
38:02To get out of here
38:02Let's make some tracks
38:13After a slow start
38:15On his first run
38:16Oh yeah
38:17It's going to be a fun run
38:18Feel it already
38:19Scooter is finally free
38:22In his natural environment
38:24She's going to be tight
38:31One oversized inbound
38:33This is a road
38:35That I've never been on
38:36All these roads
38:37I've never been on
38:38It's going to be
38:40All kinds of fun
38:41Here we go
38:42Oh yeah
38:48Beating
38:48Springs
38:51Working hard
38:51Oh yeah
38:54I felt good
38:55Straight up the sink
38:56There on that one
38:57Holy
38:59Is it rough
39:05It's terrible
39:12Is it really
39:13Whoa
39:13We're just
39:15It's just
39:15Touching it in
39:17And it's terrible
39:18It's going to be interesting
39:21To see what happens here
39:23Not much room in the narrow-ass room, and we are wide.
39:31So am I, but so is the load.
39:37As Scooter races into the bush,
39:41Todd's heading in the opposite direction.
39:48Get a little bit of shut-eye back up this morning, bright and early.
39:53Oh, s**t.
39:58Feel that right there?
40:01This road is really beating the truck around, really beating the load around.
40:11Ah, son of a b**ch.
40:14We're losing air f*****g quick.
40:16We got something broke.
40:20The brakes are completely locked.
40:22Hang on.
40:23See, the whole bracket that holds the airline up is completely laying on the ground.
40:36Oh, my gosh.
40:38This is broke.
40:39That's broke.
40:39This is broke.
40:40This is broke.
40:41Stock broke, and this one's broken.
40:43That's my main air supply report.
40:44The trailer's disc brakes.
40:47Unbelievable.
40:50It's gonna take a while to fix this.
40:52We ain't going anywhere.
40:53We're f*****g.
40:54This season...
41:05Oh, gosh, oh, gosh.
41:05The ice road truckers battle brutal roads.
41:08Any more bumps, my boobs are gonna smack me in the face and the lack of my eyes.
41:16No!
41:18And all massive loads.
41:21Holy crap.
41:22I don't want to tip this over.
41:25Hey, yo, keep going.
41:27Right there.
41:27Perfect.
41:29The main concern is busy ice crossings being a maximum weight.
41:33Come on, come on, come on.
41:35You can do it.
41:36You can do it.
41:36You can do it.
41:37The drivers must work together.
41:42Can you not f*****g around with it while I'm under here?
41:44Because if this falls, I'm dead.
41:45Don't worry, Zach.
41:46Your little brother's coming to the rescue.
41:50Hey.
41:51Now back up straight.
41:54Or fail alone.
41:55We ain't going anywhere.
41:57Fuck.
41:58My God.
41:59Come on.
42:00This is their one shot.
42:04The tricks on fire.
42:05Come on.
42:05Tell me this don't get your heart pumping.
42:07Ah!
42:09Oh.
42:09Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
