00:00We saw already one of the cars having an issue on an outlap.
00:04You are realistic to get the other car to the checkered flag?
00:09We do our best.
00:12More troubles.
00:13Now we can fight.
00:16It's McLaren and Ricciardo!
00:20Want to be part of the next chapter of McLaren history?
00:24Oscar Piastri wins!
00:27McLaren!
00:28World champions once again!
00:31Last power, last power.
00:33Switch the car, we're going to have to retire.
00:34We need to retire the car.
00:35We're taking too much risk with the gearbox.
00:38Wow, it was scary to drive.
00:40Box this lap and retire the car.
00:42Incredible.
00:43What are they going to do?
00:44I mean, it's just going from bad to worse, isn't it?
00:46That's the fourth time this year that McLaren have had a double retirement from a Grand Prix.
00:51Embarrassing.
00:53Very embarrassing.
00:55There must have been a brake failure.
00:57Alonso does not make mistakes like that.
01:00He's only finished twice in six races this year.
01:03Yeah, I feel embarrassed, you know, when I'm racing sometimes.
01:07That is a very big crash indeed.
01:11Just as you thought it couldn't get any worse for Fernando Alonso and McLaren.
01:16Oh, they've crashed!
01:17Both McLarens have hit each other.
01:19You know, we all want to do better than we're doing right now.
01:22They are fighting over last place.
01:24Jenson Button, two laps down.
01:26Driving with even.
01:28Looking alike. Arm and turn.
01:30That's two bad pit stops they've had at McLaren.
01:32Even the basics are falling away from them at the moment.
01:35Jenson's got no power.
01:37Look at this.
01:38Oh my goodness.
01:39How slow was that McLaren?
01:41GP2 engines.
01:43GP2.
01:46It's very difficult for us out there.
01:47McLaren and Honda.
01:50A product that everyone had such high hopes for but has not delivered.
01:55It's really dark, dark days for McLaren.
02:10McLaren debuted the MP430.
02:12Powered by Honda and with an incredible driver line-up of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, it sounded like a return to the team's glory days in the 1980s and 90s.
02:24But what on paper seemed like a dream quickly became the stuff of nightmares and McLaren endured their worst Formula One season ever.
02:37The car failed to see the flag 14 times that season, a return of just 27 points from 19 and has slumped to ninth in the World Constructors' Championship.
02:47Their worst position since 1980.
02:49It's the third race in a row that he's retired from.
02:52Both McLarens out there before the second flag.
02:55I want to be world champion and this year is not possible so I put all my focus on next year.
03:00We're a long way behind the other teams and in terms of development with the power unit, also the philosophy behind our car.
03:09McLaren looked finished.
03:112016 was better.
03:15An uptick in performance.
03:17P6 in the standings.
03:19Better reliability.
03:21Yee-haw!
03:23But any hopes of a continued trajectory were dashed in 2017.
03:28Do you have any expectations at all for this season?
03:30I think still a long way to go for us and you know, a lot of work to do.
03:35A complete engine redesign put the team back to square one.
03:38That just sounds horrible, doesn't it?
03:40This is your sir.
03:42I'm missed.
03:44He sounds as demotivated there as you ever hear him.
03:47Yeah.
03:48And yet more troubles.
03:50Ninth again, beaten by Haas, who had only joined F1 one year prior.
03:55Something had to give.
03:58Jenson Button had now retired from F1 but put in an ill-fated cameo in Monaco.
04:04Jenson Button does go down the inside and then Pascal does get launched.
04:08As Fernando Alonso tested the waters at the Indy 500.
04:12If you had to give a headline to your 2017 season, what would it be?
04:16It would be Indianapolis.
04:18I think the experience there, the Indy 500 was definitely the highlight of the year.
04:22And I really enjoyed it.
04:24New race, new environment, new car, new challenge.
04:25The McLaren-Honda experiment had failed.
04:29With highly rated rookie Stoffel van Doorn now in the car and their two-time champion exploring other options, McLaren had to do something.
04:38Step one of the rebuild was announced late in 2017.
04:42Honda were out, Renault were in.
04:45In essence, they swapped power unit supplies with Toro Rosso.
04:49They took on Honda and McLaren inherited their Renault supply.
04:52This was far from the only change, though, as Zac Brown was appointed McLaren Racing CEO for 2018, too, in a major restructuring effort.
05:02When can we expect McLaren to win again?
05:04I wish I knew the answer to that sooner rather than later.
05:10From the get-go in 2018, things looked positive.
05:14Fernando Alonso is on his way home now to hold off Max Verstappen and take fifth place in this race.
05:21And what a performance that is for McLaren here in Albert Park.
05:26P5 for Alonso in the season opener in Melbourne, already matching their best result of the last three seasons.
05:32Yes, Fernando. P5, mate. P5. Well done. Great drive. Great drive.
05:38Well done, guys. Long seasons in the past, but now we can fight. We can fight.
05:47In a twist of irony, Toro Rosso would go on to better that in the next round in Bahrain.
05:52Pierre Gasly echoing the now-we-can-fight line after a superb P4 finish.
05:58Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Congrats, guys.
06:01Thanks, guys. Now we can fight.
06:04But while the Italian outfit would score a higher finish, McLaren kept it consistent, recovering to P6 in the standings once again.
06:142019 saw more seismic changes, this time inside the car.
06:18Despite a far better season, Alonso sought challenges elsewhere and stepped away from F1 in a semi-permanent retirement.
06:27Champ, what a career. Thank you.
06:31Van Dorm was not retained and so in came Formula 2 vice-champion Lando Norris and the impressive Carlos Sainz.
06:39The pairing of what would go on to be known as Carlando was an instant hit.
06:45Amazing.
06:47On track, they scored in 16 of the season's 21 rounds, but their impact was even more profound off-track.
06:52A new generation of drivers. Relatable, funny, and chronically online.
07:00I'm moving up and down, side to side like a roller coaster.
07:04Helped in no small part by Drive to Survive, the pair helped give McLaren relevance outside of racing, boosting support for and perception of the team.
07:14Do you know what that was? That was a smooth operator. Smooth operation.
07:22The peak of 2019 would come late. A first podium in seven years, courtesy of Carlos Sainz in Brazil.
07:29Starting P19, he recovered to fourth before a late penalty for Lewis Hamilton was inferred.
07:36McLaren's first podium since the same race in 2012 and Carlos' first one ever.
07:43Finishing fourth in the standings, their momentum was now undeniable.
07:48While Covid disrupted the world and delayed the season, it didn't hamper McLaren's progress going into 2020.
07:56They started the season much the same way as 2019 ended, with a trophy.
08:01Yet again, it was a Lewis Hamilton penalty that gave them the opportunity.
08:06With Lando Norris digging deep in Austria to score the first podium of his career at the season opener.
08:11Yeah, boy!
08:18Yes! Well, I don't know, I don't want to celebrate too much here.
08:21Scoring in all but one race in 2020, a second podium of the season came courtesy of Carlos Sainz, chasing down Pierre Gasly at Monza.
08:30Three laps to go, three laps to go, Carlos. Maximum focus now, no mistakes.
08:34Carlos, you're second, no mistakes. Just keep it really clinical.
08:37I want this win though.
08:40Carlos Sainz comes home for second place and what a great fight he gave.
08:46Oh, what a race Carlos, P2.
08:50Great work mate.
08:51I don't know, two laps for the break.
08:54So close but yet so far. One more lap. Only one more lap.
08:58This was to be McLaren's best season finish in eight years, narrowly beating Racing Point and Renault to claim third in the standings.
09:07McLaren continued their habit of making big changes every two years by drafting in Daniel Ricciardo for 2021.
09:13But he wasn't the only change.
09:17Renault power had served McLaren well on their ascent.
09:20But 2021 saw a return to Mercedes power for the first time since 2014.
09:26The dominant power unit of the hybrid era up to that point, the extra grunt of the triple pointed star played a major part in their continued rise.
09:35It paid off.
09:38Norris returned to the podium in Imola, Monaco and Austria before a stunning one-two finish for the team at Monza, fronted by Daniel Ricciardo, the team's first win in almost nine years.
09:49McLaren after all their struggles in recent years.
09:54The papaya back on the McLaren car.
09:58He went to Renault. He's gone to McLaren. He's going to get the victory now.
10:02It's McLaren and Ricciardo that win the Italian Grand Prix.
10:07Lando Norris comes home to make it a one-two for the men from Woking.
10:11Woking!
10:14Yeah!
10:17He won!
10:23Yes!
10:25Yeah, boy!
10:30Deep down, I knew this was going to come, so thanks for having my back.
10:36And for anyone who thought I left, I never left. Just moved aside for a while.
10:42For McLaren to be on the podium, it's huge, let alone one-two, so this is for Team Papaya.
10:48I'm, for once, lost for words.
10:57While they did drop to P4 in the standings that year, behind old nemesis Ferrari, the statement was clear.
11:03The big three of Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari, that had dominated the hybrid era since 2014, was now well and truly a big four.
11:13Or at least, that was the plan.
11:202022 brought big changes, this time implemented by the sport, not the team.
11:25The ground-effect era cars of 2022 were here, and McLaren started off slowly.
11:30A podium for Norris in Imola was their only silverware of the season.
11:35You'll be very happy with that. That will probably beat everyone at McLaren.
11:39And they slipped back to fifth, behind Alpine.
11:42Daniel Ricciardo departed a year early.
11:47Despite the win at Monza, the lovable Australian had struggled to gel with the car, and he moved on.
11:53Kind of just got to a point where it was what felt like a little bit of a dead end.
11:57And after kind of going through discussions and also trying to just remove myself a little bit, I understood that it's probably best as well for me, you know, moving forward.
12:04His replacement would prove to be one of McLaren's secret weapons, en route to world domination.
12:13After the most infamous transfer saga in F1 history, Oscar Piastri would not join Alpine for 2023, but instead replace countryman Ricciardo alongside Norris.
12:25I want to be part of the next chapter of the current history, hopefully. It's a very historic team, and I'm really enjoying working for them.
12:33A new face took on the role of team principal as Andreas Stella stepped up to replace the Alfa Romeo bound Andreas Seidel.
12:40The McLaren of 2023 was really starting to hit its stride.
12:45Lando Norris, what a performance from McLaren. Second and third.
12:50Lights out, away we go. Max Verstappen getting off the line, but it's a good start by Norris. A very good start. Lando Norris leads.
12:59Piastri's trying to take second, but Max Verstappen around the outside. But it is Lando Norris who leads from Max Verstappen in second place.
13:05With Lando picking up podium after podium through the year.
13:10On his 100th Grand Prix start, Lando Norris takes his 12th career podium. It will be second place for Lando Norris.
13:19Good fun always is when you're fighting for these positions, and I kept pushing to the end, so it was a rewarding race.
13:24As the car gathered pace, Piastri's confidence grew too, culminating in his first podium in Japan.
13:30For the first time in Formula One, Oscar Piastri takes his place on the podium in just his 16th Grand Prix.
13:39Then another, and a sprint victory in Qatar.
13:42The Australian driver will see the checkered flag first. Oscar Piastri wins the sprint.
13:48Oscar Piastri with a dream weekend. Winner of the sprint yesterday, second in the Grand Prix today from sixth on the grid.
13:54From sixth on the grid.
13:55They ended the year fourth, but with perhaps the second fastest car by the end of the year.
14:042024. The big one.
14:07The question everyone's asking is, can you guys beat Red Bull?
14:09The difference in attitude from this point 12 months ago is, you know, night and day different.
14:17Norris and Piastri went into the year pretty evenly matched.
14:21Red Bull did have the fastest car at the beginning of the year.
14:24Max Verstappen crosses the line to take victory in Shanghai.
14:29But McLaren would soon take that mantle from them.
14:33And that wasn't the only thing.
14:35Enter the fray, Rob Marshall.
14:38A Red Bull lifer, Marshall had spent 17 years at Milton Keynes before joining McLaren for the start of 2024.
14:45This mighty combination was simply too good to beat.
14:49And Norris would finally take his maiden win at the Miami Grand Prix.
14:52It's a landmark day for Lando. Lando Norris wins for the first time in Formula One.
15:01It's victory in Miami for Norris and McLaren.
15:11I love you all. I love you all. Thank you so much.
15:15We did it Will. We did it.
15:18Not just a fast car, but now one capable of challenging for race wins on the regular.
15:27Piastri had his turn, breaking his duck in Hungary.
15:31The Australian driver advances all the way to that chequered flag.
15:36Oscar Piastri wins for the first time in Formula One.
15:40Well done Oscar. Well done. Chequered flag.
15:43Well done buddy. Really good.
15:45See ya. Thank you everyone. Thank you very much. Thanks for the coordination.
15:53Norris even sniffed an outside chance of the title, taking four wins in total, with Piastri having two by season's end.
16:01That updated McLaren, in clear air, is an absolute rocket ship.
16:05A final race showdown saw them duel with Ferrari for the Constructors crown, besting their old rivals by 14 points.
16:13McLaren are world champions of 2024. They win the Constructors title for the first time since 1998.
16:22Big thank you to everyone in McLaren, everyone in Papaya, everyone who supported us this year, because it's been a tough one, but for us to win the Constructors after 26 years is pretty special.
16:35As the sun set on 2024, McLaren were now the team to beat.
16:39It was a frantic, exhilarating fight to the flag in 2024.
16:49Yeah, it hurts a lot. The disappointment can only be huge after losing the Constructors now.
16:55But fair play to McLaren, they've had an incredible season.
16:58An incredible season.
17:00But 2025 couldn't have been more placid.
17:03For the 200th time in Formula One, McLaren win! It's a McLaren 1-2!
17:09Fantastic drive again.
17:11It's a 1-2 for the team.
17:13Absolutely brilliant.
17:14Smiles all round for McLaren.
17:16McLaren were now gulfs apart from the rest of the field.
17:19We've got to be realistic, McLaren are the best at the moment.
17:21He looks like McLaren is in another world.
17:24Do you think you can fight with the McLarens for the front row football?
17:28No, not really.
17:29Did you expect to be closer to McLaren than you are?
17:32No.
17:33Virtually unbeatable at almost every track.
17:36Norris and Piastri traded wins all throughout the season.
17:40Oscar Piastri wins the Chinese Bahrain Saudi Miami Spanish Belgian Dutch Grand Prix.
17:47Let's go.
17:48Lando Norris wins the Australian, Monaco, Austrian, British, Hungarian Grand Prix.
17:55Woo!
17:57That's a dream.
17:59And will continue to do so until one is crowned Drivers' Champion.
18:06McLaren can be crowned champions if they secure a P1 and P2 or P1 and P3.
18:11They've definitely made it a little bit more difficult for themselves.
18:14I still think that they're going to get it done today.
18:17Coming into this weekend, I think we all thought it might be deal done.
18:21Perhaps not.
18:24Horrible getaway for Oscar Piastri, P20 right now.
18:28He's in the wall, he's out of the race.
18:30Oscar Piastri into the barriers.
18:33And Lando Norris is stuck in seventh.
18:36Frustrating afternoon for Norris.
18:37I think at this point they know going into the next race they're going to win the Constructors.
18:42And I don't think they were that focused on.
18:44Another twist in this championship tale.
18:47But with six races to go, McLaren are already our 2025 Constructors World Champions.
18:54Taking back-to-back titles for the first time since 1990 and 1991.
18:59Few people could have predicted this turnaround.
19:03Unbelievable team here, unbelievable team back at the factory.
19:06Pretty awesome to go back-to-back.
19:07It's been a while since we've done it.
19:09Yeah, baby!
19:11Woo!
19:14Do we think this can continue through the next regulation change in 2026?
19:18We know it's difficult, but it's an undertaking that we are all in for it.
19:22More troubles.
19:31Now we can fight.
19:33Woo-hoo-hoo!
19:35It's McLaren and Ricciardo!
19:39Want to be part of the next chapter of McLaren history.
19:42Oscar Piastri wins!
19:45McLaren!
19:47World Champions once again!
19:50With a huge rule change coming in for 2026, there's no guarantee they'll stay at the top of the pile.
19:56But with the dream team behind the scenes and the rumored strongest power unit, you wouldn't bet against them.
20:16We are just going to be part of it.
20:18It's an inspiring event and experienced that we are not presenting.
20:21You know, so we've been committed to getting to the disaster.
20:22We're all about the damage of the crews.
20:24We're all about to believe in the erstmal of the dangers of what we are experiencing.
20:26We're all about to believe in the newlyweds that are creating more light, because of the risk of that.
20:28Which is amazing.
20:30And we're going to be part of the mission.
20:32We're gonna be part of the mission.
20:34And we're gonna be part of the mission.
20:36We're going to the plan.
20:37We're going to be part of the mission before that we can see that we get from the mark.
20:39We will need our own moments.
20:41We're going to not create anything that is perfect for the difference.
