Some projections put the total cost as high as 10 billion euros in the long run. This project is the cornerstone of Poland's historic military modernization. To give you some perspective, the country's total defense budget is set to hit over 4.7% of its GDP in 2025. That's a colossal commitment of nearly 200 billion złoty, or over $50 billion. putting Poland right at the top of NATO for defence spending relative to its economic size. A multi-billion euro price tag like this raises a pretty obvious question. Where is all this money coming from? The answer is a mix of national determination and international cooperation. First and foremost, the bulk of the funding comes directly from Poland's own national budget. That unprecedented defence spending Approaching 4.8% of GDP is the main engine driving not just the Eastern Shield, but also a massive shopping spree for weapons from the US and South Korea. Warsaw is shouldering an incredible financial burden to secure its future. But Poland isn't going it alone. The European Union has recognised the Eastern Shield as a strategically vital project for the entire continent's defence. This recognition is already unlocking serious financial support Poland has secured a preliminary agreement with the European Investment Bank, EIB, for a €1 billion loan specifically for the project, making the Shield an officially EU-backed venture. Beyond that loan, Poland is also trying to tap into larger European funds. The government is in serious talks to finance parts of its defence overhaul through the EU's main budget, arguing that by protecting its border, it's protecting the entire Union.
