00:00Along the border between Poland and Belarus, a new Iron Curtain is rising.
00:04But this one isn't just made of steel, it's built with advanced sensors,
00:08anti-drone technology and a shocking multi-billion dollar price tag.
00:13It's called the Eastern Shield, a project designed to turn Poland's border
00:19into a death trap for any potential invader.
00:22In this video, we're breaking down exactly what this fortress wall is,
00:26how much it will cost, and who is actually paying for it.
00:30The Eastern Shield, or Tarsavshud, is Poland's answer to a geopolitical threat that's become
00:37impossible to ignore. It's a massive multi-year defence initiative aimed at fortifying over
00:42700 kilometres of its border with Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad exclave.
00:47But don't just picture a simple fence. The project involves creating a deep,
00:52layered defence zone that could extend in some places up to 50 kilometres into Polish territory.
00:58This defence in depth strategy will include physical fortifications,
01:03bunkers and anti-tank obstacles like dragon's teeth.
01:08While some military analysts suggest the plan could include pre-planned minefields,
01:12the real muscle of the shield is its technology.
01:16We're talking about a dense network of advanced surveillance, including satellite communications,
01:21thermal cameras and sophisticated anti-drone systems, all designed to create an impassable
01:27barrier for a modern army. Announced back in May 2024, the plan is all about deterrence.
01:33It's about learning the hard lessons from Ukraine's struggle and applying them.
01:37This isn't just about protecting Poland. It's about securing the entire
01:42eastern flank of both NATO and the European Union. So what's the price for building Europe's newest
01:48fortress? The numbers are staggering. The first phase of the Eastern Shield, which is planned for
01:55completion by 2028, comes with a committed price tag of over 10 billion Polish złoty.
02:02That's roughly 2.3 billion euros or 2.5 billion dollars. This initial investment covers the first wave of
02:10fortifications and technology along the border. But Polish officials have been very clear that
02:16this is just the start. The Minister of National Defence has stated that Eastern Shield is a long-term
02:23program that will extend far beyond 2028 and will ultimately be much more expensive than that
02:30initial figure. Some projections put the total cost as high as 10 billion euros in the long run.
02:35This project is the cornerstone of Poland's historic military modernization.
02:41To give you some perspective, the country's total defense budget is set to hit over 4.7% of its GDP
02:48in 2025. That's a colossal commitment of nearly 200 billion złoty or over 50 billion dollars.
