The Lovely Eggs celebrate their 20th anniversary with an October tour taking in Brighton (Sunday, October 26, Concorde 2).
Transcript
00:00Good afternoon. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely to
00:06speak to Holly Ross from the band The Lovely X. Now, Significant Times, the band is celebrating
00:1220 years, which is a remarkable achievement in a business where it is tough to keep going.
00:17How do you account for the fact that the band is still around after two decades? That's
00:21something, isn't it?
00:23Yeah, well, I guess we just keep on doing what we've always done, which is, you know,
00:27making music and sort of dedicating our lives to it. And it kind of feels a bit like you
00:32can't really dedicate your whole life to something and then just stop it, you know, like our band
00:39is our life, you know. It's not like a, we're not, we're not, we've not got a career, we
00:46haven't got a goal, you know, being in the band.
00:49The music is the goal itself, you were saying. It's not an external goal.
00:53Exactly. The whole way of life of being in a band and the music is, you know, part and
01:00parcel of everything about us. So I guess we'd have to, you know, yeah, we'd have to end
01:06if the band had to end.
01:08And you've always had the right idea in terms of the independent ethos, haven't you? For
01:13reasons of integrity, really. That's the way you do it and keep out of the sort of all the
01:19nonsense of the music industry.
01:21Yeah, I think it's good for your mental health, really, to avoid the music industry at all
01:25costs.
01:27That's good coming from a musician. That's encouraging.
01:29Yeah. And also as an artist as well, you know, like, you know, if you look at the music
01:36industry, everything's got a monetary value to it, you know. And that's not how we value
01:43our music. You know, we just want to release and play the songs that we like and we want
01:48to play and we kind of want to keep it pure. So there's no reason why you can't do that.
01:52So we did do that. And that's why, yeah, we're independent and we don't have anyone telling
01:57us what to do.
01:59And it's also why you're still here, isn't it?
02:01Well, I think so in a way, because we're doing, you know, well, maybe we're gluttons for
02:05punishment because we do have a lot of like admin work and we're like every single thing
02:10we sell from our shop. We package it up ourselves. You know, we've got no one helping us or anything.
02:14But that's control, isn't it? That's good.
02:16Yeah, it is. Maybe we're control freaks. I don't know. Yeah, it could be that. But yeah,
02:21we are happy doing it because it's the art life. David Lynch talks about it, used to talk
02:28about it a lot, the art life. And it's dedicating your whole world, 24 hours a day, seven days
02:34a week to doing what you do and living the art life. And that's what we try and do.
02:39So how have you been celebrating 20 years?
02:44Rolling lots of posters. We've just done actually David Shrigley, who lives in the Brighton
02:53area. And he's one of our favourite ever artists. And he's just done a 20th anniversary poster.
03:01He's designed a poster for us. So literally the last couple of weeks, we've just been rolling
03:06posters. So that is our world, you know. Yeah.
03:10Brilliant. Well, congratulations on that anniversary. You are playing Concord 2 Brighton Sunday,
03:16October the 26th. Holly from The Lovely Eggs, lovely to speak to you. Thank you ever so much.
03:21Thank you. I should mention as well.
03:24Please do.
03:24Do you know about the supports we've got in Brighton?
03:29No. Go on then.
03:31Well, we have a band called Polite Bureau.
03:35Yeah.
03:35Who are from Brighton. And we also have Stuart Lee. We've got loads of comedians supporting
03:39us across the tour. And Stuart Lee is going to be our special guest in Brighton.
03:43Fantastic. Well, it gets better and better. Have a great time in Brighton.
03:47And good to speak to you. Thank you.
