Air traffic staffing has been cut by 50%
Transcript
00:00Think the government shutdown isn't impacting you?
00:03Think again, especially if you're traveling.
00:05The FAA says staffing shortages are already causing flight delays at major airports,
00:10including Newark, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Burbank.
00:14Here's why.
00:15About 13,000 air traffic controllers and 60,000-plus TSA officers
00:20are still required to work through the shutdown, but they're not getting paid.
00:25They're set to miss their first paycheck on October 14th.
00:28Now, some controllers have already started calling out sick,
00:32and the transportation secretary says staffing in some areas has been cut by half
00:36since the shutdown began last week.
00:38That means longer lines, delayed flights, and more cancellations, and it could get worse.
00:43On Monday alone, more than 4,000 flights were delayed nationwide,
00:47including almost a third of arrivals in Denver and about one in five at Newark, according to FlightAware.
00:53Bottom line, air safety isn't at risk, but your travel plans might be.
00:58That'll do it for your daily briefing from the New York Stock Exchange.
