00:00Okay, recording, uh, recording video, uh, I'm gonna stamp my left foot now.
00:16Pop, pop, pop.
00:21Um.
00:26Okay, then.
00:30Hi, I'm Gabe Kozillo, I'm one of the developers of Baby Steps, and I'm gonna tell you some facts.
00:36Uh, the first fact.
00:39All the dialogue in this game has been improvised by me and my collaborators.
00:46Uh, much like these facts.
00:49Fact two.
00:51Uh, there's a secret first-person hat.
00:54I'm not supposed to tell you about that, but I happen to have it here.
00:58Uh, I'm sorry.
01:00For the spoilers.
01:01Third fact.
01:02You shouldn't know very much about this game when you play it, because it's full of surprises, and they're fun.
01:07But I somehow have to tell you a few of the surprises, enough to make you want to play it, but not so many that playing it isn't fun anymore.
01:16Um, the first-person hat is just a tiny taste.
01:19The tip of a delicious glacier.
01:20Uh, more facts.
01:23Ready?
01:24Here's a fact.
01:25It's a very good climbing game.
01:27Um, I've spent way too much of my life trying to get this guy to climb good.
01:32He's got feet.
01:33You control the feet.
01:35You control them really precisely.
01:37You can play a shmup with this foot.
01:39It's crazy.
01:40You got one-to-one control.
01:41You lift the foot.
01:42You move the stick around.
01:44The foot moves just like your stick in real life.
01:47Uh, you can climb.
01:50Stuff.
01:51You can slip on stuff.
01:53It's all good.
01:55It's all well done.
01:57You know, there's a lot of nuance to it, and there's no, like, kind of design-y, spreadsheet-y, hard barriers.
02:04It's all organic.
02:06It's all-we just put some colliders on the stuff, and then we hope that the level design works.
02:12So, you can kind of climb anything you want in the world.
02:16Like, this is a nice pile of rocks I made for you to climb.
02:19But if you don't like my nice pile of rocks, you can climb any-anything.
02:25You can climb these rocks.
02:26You can climb this rock over here.
02:28But there's more to climb, not just rocks.
02:30There's a whole giant fucking open world.
02:33It's-it's vast.
02:36Big and vast.
02:38There's a lot of stuff in it.
02:39We've been putting little stupid jokes in this thing for years and years and years.
02:43You wouldn't believe how much stupid shit is in this giant world.
02:47You can go wherever you want as you climb the mountain.
02:51And find little things here and find little things there.
02:55You're gonna have a blast.
02:58What more do you want?
02:59I need the-it's supposed to be a list of facts.
03:01I'm gonna do one more fact.
03:03This next fact, the music in this game, it's all made from ambient stuff in the world.
03:11It's kind of coming together into making songs in a way that's kind of subtle and cool and interesting.
03:16Unlike anything you've ever played.
03:18Are you interested in novelty?
03:20Are you a novelty-seeking person?
03:22I don't know.
03:23You just want to play the same thing over and over again, maybe.
03:26Maybe you like League of Legends.
03:27That's fine.
03:28You're probably not gonna buy this game.
03:29Look at this creepy doll.
03:32You didn't know that was there.
03:33That's crazy.
03:36Alright.
03:37I hope you buy it.
03:39Goodbye.
03:44Showed it too much.
03:45You should have shown the dick down a well.
03:48Oh, that's good.
03:49But I liked it when you were doing furniture salesmen.
03:53I liked it when you became impressive.
04:00Um...
04:00Okay.
04:03Uh-oh.
04:05Okay.
04:10Well...
04:10Oh, no!
04:11Should I send them that, then?
04:16Or do you want another take?
04:17Just another take.
04:22Okay.
04:23Give it one eighth of, uh...
04:24Valium.
04:26And, uh...
04:27All right.
04:29Take two.
04:31And...
04:32I'm gonna...
04:33And I'm gonna...
04:33A bit less to spoil.
04:34No, I...
04:35They want me to spoil stuff.
04:36Yeah, no.
04:37You spoil a little bit of stuff.
04:38I didn't spoil that much.
04:40The whole fucking map, you know?
04:41I didn't really show...
04:42I mean, I showed just the demo area.
04:44Yeah.
04:45That's a shit.
04:46I didn't even show enough of the map.
04:49Really.
04:52Uh...
04:52Okay.
04:57Um...
04:58Ready?
04:59I'm gonna stamp my left foot.
05:01You also can make cuts, and you can, like...
05:03Yeah, I know, I know.
05:04But I'm not gonna do the edit.
05:06I'm gonna let them do the edit.
05:07Okay.
05:08And I'm gonna put my left foot down now.
05:11Hello!
05:12I'm Gabe Cazillo.
05:13I'm one of the developers of Baby Steps.
05:15That's this game.
05:17And I'm here to tell you facts about it.
05:19A number of facts.
05:21Uh...
05:21The first fact...
05:23Is that all the dialogue in this game...
05:24Improvised.
05:25By me and my collaborators, Bennett and Maxie.
05:29Uh...
05:29It's like...
05:30Kind of a joke about AAA games.
05:32There's, like, uh...
05:33Over a future film's worth of stupid cutscenes in it.
05:36With us doing acting.
05:38Uh...
05:39Now I'm gonna improvise some more facts.
05:42To show you how good it is I am.
05:45Fact number two.
05:47This one isn't as good.
05:49Already.
05:49I don't like this take.
05:50I need...
05:51I need something better.
05:51I actually feel like starting with the first person hat was kind of good.
05:56Even though it was a terrible spoiler.
06:03But it kind of gave it a little life.
06:04You know what I mean?
06:05Yeah.
06:05I know what you mean.
06:06What if we just used that first take.
06:09It had a certain energy to it.
06:12You don't want to use it?
06:14I can do one more take.
06:15Yeah, there will be one more.
06:16Okay.
06:17I need to have at least...
06:18I need to have more than one fact queued up.
06:21Um...
06:22What if you just had like three facts in mind so you were not stumped?
06:29Right.
06:29Okay.
06:30Well, climbing.
06:30The controls is a fact.
06:32The music is a fact.
06:33Improvisation is a good fact to start.
06:34I like that you said this is also improvised.
06:37Okay.
06:38I'll do that again.
06:39But it's not really improvised anymore.
06:42Can admit to that if you want.
06:43Okay.
06:44Hi.
06:45I'm Gabe Cozillo.
06:46I'm one of the developers.
06:49I'm going to start over.
06:50Hi.
06:51I'm Gabe Cozillo.
06:51I'm one of the developers of Baby Steps.
06:53That's this game.
06:55We've been working on it for close to six years now.
06:58It's a game about hiking up a mountain.
07:01Here are some facts.
07:02Fact number one.
07:03All the cutscenes are improvised by us.
07:06Much like these facts.
07:08Fact number two.
07:09It's a climbing game that has a complicated system for walking around.
07:15You lift your foot with a trigger and then you move the stick to move the foot around.
07:20Move the stick forward.
07:21Foot move forward.
07:22It's all one-to-one.
07:23It feels really tight.
07:24It's all good.
07:25It was really, really hard to make.
07:26Oh my god.
07:27And then also, there's a big old world to walk on.
07:32Look at that.
07:34Oh, this weather doesn't look the best.
07:35Let's pick a nicer looking weather.
07:37Look, you can change the weather.
07:38You can't.
07:39I can.
07:40I'm using cheats.
07:41But look.
07:43Look at all the delicious weathers you might experience in the game.
07:47Then there's stuff to climb on, like these rocks.
07:49I thoughtfully placed these rocks in an interesting way so that they would be fun and frustrating
07:55and delightful to climb.
07:58There are little ideas in the level design.
08:01Little ideas that are humble sometimes, like this one.
08:04Like, ooh, there's a little crack.
08:05What are you going to do about that?
08:06Oh no, you might fall.
08:08But ooh, but maybe you can rescue it.
08:10And then ideas that are maybe a little bit more interesting.
08:13Like this next one up here where you don't, you can't make this little step.
08:17Uh-oh, your knee hits the thing.
08:19And then you're like, oh wait, maybe I can put my foot here.
08:21And then that's like a beautiful little epiphany you've had.
08:25Isn't that sound fun?
08:26But then also you can fall off it and feel the despair and frustration.
08:30And maybe that will lead you to have some kind of revelation about yourself
08:35and how you react to the trials and tribulations that life throws at you.
08:41Um, next fact.
08:42Your onesie actually can get dirty.
08:44So here, I'm going to fly over to some mud.
08:47Look, there's mud over here.
08:49Look at it.
08:50Oh no, I'm going to slip on it.
08:54Now, he's muddy on the front.
08:57Look at that.
08:58That's, that's, that's AAA right there.
09:01That's, that's good stuff.
09:03All right, next fact.
09:05There's, it's a big open world game.
09:08That's something that you don't expect.
09:11Full of things like Pyramid of Cans.
09:14Can you knock over these cans?
09:15I bet not.
09:17Uh, why is it a big open world game?
09:20Why is that interesting?
09:21I'll tell you.
09:22You can explore.
09:23Most of these games, maybe you've played them like Only Up.
09:26Or, I don't know, Jump King.
09:29That sort of thing.
09:30They're just linear.
09:31You got one jump, you got to do it.
09:32But this one, you've got a whole big world.
09:34And you're kind of deciding what you're doing.
09:36And you're having your own experience.
09:37And we have a loose grip on what the experience is.
09:39It's your own.
09:40And we don't have any invisible walls or any kind of bullshit spreadsheet designy stuff.
09:45Everything is just mesh colliders.
09:48And you can just use them.
09:49You can climb on anything.
09:50These little cracks in the rock, this isn't bullshit.
09:53You can actually put your feet on those guys.
09:55And it works.
09:56Nothing is sacred.
09:58Everything can be touched.
10:00Everything can be rubbed with those delicious feet.
10:04All right.
10:04Another fact.
10:05We got this beautiful music system where the music emerges from the ambient sounds of the world.
10:12They've all been sequenced into magical sounds unlike any music you've ever heard before.
10:17If you're a novelty-seeking person, you must play this game.
10:21It's unlike anything else.
10:23But also, it's a little bit familiar.
10:25Because it's kind of a parody of a AAA game, in a sense.
10:29Because it's got cut scenes.
10:30And it's got an open world.
10:32And it's got towers that you climb that reveal things.
10:34But everything is done in a much more thoughtful way.
10:36Because it's made by very few people who are thoughtful and interesting.
10:40Perhaps you will enjoy it.
10:41And it comes out on September 23rd.
10:44Goodbye.
10:46Bye.
