00:19His story plunges us into the heart of the Christian fervor of the New World.
00:23Born in 1586 in Lima, capital of Peru, Isabel Flores de Oliva received the nickname Rose very early on.
00:34for her delicate beauty and radiant face.
00:39From childhood, she showed a deep desire to dedicate her life to God.
00:45She loved prayer and would already withdraw into moments of silence and contemplation.
00:52Against the life of her family, which she had destined for marriage, Rose chooses virginity and sees herself in Christ.
01:01Inspired by Saint Catherine of Siena, she practiced a life of great austerity,
01:07fasting, vigil, penitential clothes.
01:11She even made a small crown of thorns which she wore under her veil,
01:17as an offering for the sins of the world.
01:19Despite his mortifications, his heart remained luminous and filled with charity.
01:26Rose did not confine herself to her prayer alone.
01:30In her garden she built a small hermitage
01:34where she prayed and cared for the poorest, the slaves,
01:40the natives rejected by colonial society.
01:42She financed her works by embroidering and growing flowers
01:48which she sold in the markets of Lima.
01:52Through her gentleness and generosity, she won the trust of the humble and the powerful alike.
01:59Saint Rose had many mystical experiences.
02:03She said,
02:04“Lord, increase my suffering, but also increase your love in me.”
02:11She saw her mission as a participation in the passion of Christ.
02:16Her spiritual union with Jesus was so intense
02:20that she is sometimes called the mystical bride of Christ.
02:25Rose died very young, in 1617, at only 31 years old.
02:33Her death shocked Lima, who already considered her a saint.
02:39Her canonization in 1671 made her the first saint of the New World.
02:47Today she is venerated throughout Latin America,
02:50but also in the Philippines, testifying to its universal influence.
02:57Saint Rose of Lima teaches us the value of prayer,
03:01of humility and self-sacrifice.
03:04Through his example, we discover that a simple life,
03:09dedicated to God and the poor,
03:12can light up an entire continent.
03:15On this August 23, let us pray with her.
03:18Lord, make our lives an offering of love and peace.
