Understanding Congenital Hearing Loss in Newborns

Congenital hearing loss occurs due to damage in the nerve connecting the ear and brain – often caused by maternal infections or missing vaccines during pregnancy.  To detect hearing loss in newborn babies, the universal newborn hearing test should be performed, preferably within 48 hours after birth. With early detection, you can visit the ENT hospital, and treatment can be given.

00:04Congenital Sensorineural Hearing Lose.

00:06When people are in the hospital, they say,

00:09Congenital hearing loss.

00:11So, sometimes, when they go to the hospital,

00:14they don't have to worry about the hospital.

00:16What is the reason for that?

00:19Sometimes, it may be a pregnancy related.

00:21But, in the time of pregnancy, some infection happened.

00:24One of them was sick.

00:27It wasn't after delivery, hypoxia, hypervillorinemia,

00:32and there are conditions.

00:34So, they can't get the hearing loss.

00:36So, where did they come from?

00:38When they first started, they were in the first delivery,

00:40within 48 hours.

00:41And they didn't test any discharge.

00:45So, there is Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Test.

00:49So, after doing an automated test,

00:52they can't get the hearing from them.

00:56So, when they are in the hospital,

00:57they can't get the hearing test.

00:59But, if they are not available in the hospital,

01:01they can't get the hearing test.

01:02So, you have to do a hearing test.

01:04Then, within 1 month time, you have to do a hearing test.

01:07If you have to do this,

01:08we can do it without getting the treatment.

01:10So, after doing treatment,

01:11we have to make sure their brain development is good.

01:17That's why they give you a test.

01:18After that, we have to make sure their hearing test is fine.

01:23Before they get the hearing test,

01:24they can't get the hearing test.

01:26If we have to get the hearing test,

01:27if they are not hearing,

01:28they will get in the hospital,

01:29they can hear from people to them.

01:30Because what sounds are they talking about, they are talking about it.

01:36So, hearing tests, there can be a surgical method also.

01:43That is cochlear implant surgery. That is a device.

01:47It has an internal device and external device.

01:50What do they do? The device has electrodes.

01:53And the electrodes are cochlear.

01:55We have a sensory organ inside the inner ear.

01:59So, in the electrodes, in the sensory organ, they have a direct stimulation.

02:05So, when they do surgery, they don't have a sensory organ.

02:10Then, when they do surgery, we have to give therapy.

02:15That is, where they come from.

02:17That is why they have auditory verbal therapy.

02:20So, when they do that, they can attend a normal school.

02:24And their professional and personal careers, personal development, everything will be good.

02:30So, if they do it fast, then we will do treatment.
