What is the cheapest electric van? It is the Renault Master, the cheapest large van in its sector and also cheaper than many of the medium vans in the market!

Does cheap mean not as good? Far from it, it has great payload, space, equipment and range! It can carry nearly 1500kgs, has plenty of range with an official range (WLTP) of 285 for the MM40 and 255 for the MM35 (see video for explanation) and can charge pretty fast too and fill its 87kWh battery from 10-80% in 38 minutes adding around 142 miles of range.

Now it is fair to say the range is a little optimistic, but not more so than others on the market. I was able to achieve 3.3mpkwh on a mix or motorway and rural.

This should be a van you consider as it will save you money too! The fact that it is electric would normally make more expensive to lease and then you make your money back on the fuel. With this Van you win on the lease cost too!! Meaning that the total cost of ownership (TCO) is a big saving if you can charge privately!

00:00Hey everybody and welcome to another Electric Van Man review, this time of the Renault Master
00:08E-Tech. Now this is a brand new electric van coming to the market and it is an award-winning
00:15van. This my friends is the international year of the international van of the year not year of the
00:22van every year is the year of the van international van of the year so it's got some expectations to
00:30live up to let's see if it does and before we go any further please if you love electric vans or
00:38you're even curious about them please like please subscribe and let's get into lots of information
00:45about electric vans so you can make informed choices so the Renault Master E-Tech has got
00:52lots to live up to but starting with the looks i'm really liking this front end it makes me smile
01:01every time i see it you know why because i think this little bit here is all about a big garfield grin
01:09and i just smile every time i see it it looks really good but it's really a strong and
01:15imposing presence it looks really kind of blunt at the front end but i'm promised that a focus of
01:22aerodynamics is all over this vehicle and that is how they achieve what they say is class leading
01:31efficiency for a large van a couple of practical points because you know how i love to be practical
01:38well one of my favorite little things is here right down here at the front which is this step
01:45which allows us to get up and clean our windscreen should the need arise i like this chrome bar that
01:53runs across the middle the now across all models of renault this nice renault badge at the front
02:02the headlights everything is well thought through and aesthetically pleasing yes indeed big words but
02:11it looks good doesn't it but as you know i am all about practicality when it comes to electric vans
02:17we can get caught up in we must go electric and we must abandon all thought and brain power
02:24to decide whether we're going to have an electric van we just buy one but is it fit for a purpose in
02:29your business well practicality for me always stops at the side door starts even so we've actually got a
02:38class leading door width of 1312 millimeters just a few millimeters bigger than all the rest
02:45but that means nice and practical also nice grab handle gets you up in and out of the vehicle nice
02:52and easily my only question should this be yellow and also maybe a step so whilst at the back here it's
03:00important to point out that the renault team have confirmed that there will be a panoramic camera now
03:06this is the advanced model uh it doesn't come as standard on this model but i'm assured that it
03:12is brilliant now whilst it also at the back here it's worth pointing out that this van unlike some
03:19electric vans although it's more and more getting there this vehicle will tow two and a half thousand
03:25kilos two and a half thousand kilos is very respectable and will tackle many of the jobs that you yourselves
03:32will find parking sensors and all those kinds of things and they're very good i've used them myself
03:40it has to be said this vehicle is very maneuverable so you can get in and out of difficult spots but
03:47of course the all important bit is in there so the check straps will hold the doors now i have discovered
03:55that sometimes the check straps won't catch the door so you just need to be a little bit
04:01careful as you're opening the door but so a lovely big space cavernous you might say 10.8 cubic meters
04:09now 10.8 cubic meters what does that mean in real money well you've got 3.2 meters at the base and a
04:15nice little space there for your eight before boards and things like that to slot in the middle um 1800 mil
04:21just over high and uh all the width between the wheel arches that you need over 1500 mil across the back
04:28there importantly you can get on the mm35 you can get uh just over a ton in there 1040 kilos or thereabouts
04:38and you can also have a four ton option now at the moment time of speaking february 25
04:44there is still legislation around operating vans over um electric vans over three and a half tons up to
04:524.25 tons there you have got permission you can do it without an operator's license but there is some
04:59legislation which is currently in consultation and hopefully we'll get that gone very very shortly but
05:05if you went for the four ton version you could go up to all the way up to 1460 kilos which is more
05:12than enough for most operations that involve a van that is great news so with all the practical facts
05:21dealt with this brings us to the question of whether or not this van is fit for purpose for you
05:27we haven't talked about range we haven't talked about battery size we haven't talked about charging speeds
05:33but let me fill you in on all of those key facts now renaud claim a full range of 285 miles on the
05:43four ton version now the four ton version one of those legislative restrictions that are on us at the
05:49moment is a speed limit of 56 miles an hour so of course that means that the vehicle would be limited
05:55at 56 miles an hour in order to achieve that 285 wltp that's with 30 payload so in that particular
06:04instance around about four nearly 500 kilos you tend to typically lose around about two percent per 100
06:14kilos on most vans and on most vans you would expect to get two miles per kilowatt or maybe 2.2 in the
06:23large van sector now of course renault are claiming a much greater efficiency due to the aerodynamics of
06:30the van and all of these elements now my experience says that there is a variation um and wltp doesn't
06:38always give us what we expect they also have another number of 255 for the three and a half ton
06:44version which sort of goes obviously a little bit faster so you know considering up to 70 miles an hour
06:51so there's a few factors in there i think realistically you're going to get somewhere between 200 and maybe
06:58220 230 and in the summer it will make a difference it's a little cold right now my hands very cold yes
07:06absolutely and i'm needing to keep them warm but it's uh completely irrelevant i know but um what
07:14about charging so i came to charge the renault master here at checkley wood checkley wood for two reasons
07:22first of all as you can see there is renewable power coming into this site um i don't know if it's
07:29directly wired yet but it will be shortly uh i'm seeing lots of work going on even as we speak
07:35so this wind power even on a misty daylight today still generating energy is going to be dropping
07:43into these chargers and this vehicle which is great news great news for the environment but also great
07:50news for the price yes 39 pence so if you're near the um the environment of late buzzard um dunstable
07:59milton keys is not too far away you can get charging for 39 pence per kilowatt hour which was a
08:05lot better than many of the others out there anyway back to the vehicle what can this vehicle take in
08:11terms of charging speed well in its premium window or the peak window i should say it will achieve 130
08:19kilowatt dc charging what that means is in the um sort of 15 to uh 80 range it will take around about 38
08:30minutes adding about 142 miles in that sort of time on the wltp number and we'll uh maybe already know
08:38about the wltp number we'll come on to that um and also it has 22 kilowatt ac charging so if you're at a
08:46depot a workplace where you have three-phase uh electricity you could get 22 kilowatts depending on the
08:53charger into the vehicle so all of these things are really good for both the user but also for the
09:01environment it's a blooming winner i do think however that 130 kilowatts is going to seem slow
09:10in due course i think time will mean that we'll see faster and faster charging on these vehicles
09:17because productivity is everything and the quicker that we can get them back on the road the better it is
09:22for all of us and this is really important obviously you have the charging here at the
09:28front it's not at the very front and i think that that's a good thing putting it on the front puts
09:33it at risk of getting damaged in frontal impacts and stuff like that um being at the front it does
09:39mean you have to pull up to the charge and then reverse out with that camera at the back i think that's
09:45going to make a good difference and hopefully allow you to reverse out without those considerations
09:51all of these things make for a very good van what about inside well first of all being inside
10:01is actually a lot warmer phew um but it's a really nice cab area um i i found it very car like the
10:09seating is really good uh nice and firm this again model doesn't have it but there will be um
10:17lumber support and you know multi ways to move and get um sorted in terms of cabin space you've got
10:25cup holders where you would expect to have cup holders and you've got lots of cubbies and bins and
10:31bits over the top here and of course plenty of storage in the van there's a nice touch screen there very
10:40adaptable and use your phone with it but also you can access google so you can sign into your own
10:46personal google account it'll set the home for you and also give you other notifications i'm sure
10:52calendars and things like that the important thing about charging is there are time of use tariffs which
10:58enable you to really reduce the cost of your energy if you charge at the right time it might be an off
11:05peak time in your business or it might be you know off peak times at home which can be incredibly cheap
11:11as low as seven pence per kilowatt hour well and that is good let me tell you that means that you're
11:17filling the van up with 87 kilowatt hours for seven eight seven nines or 63 about six pounds so that's
11:25pretty good at least 200 miles and you know maybe a little bit more if it's summer and you're driving
11:31carefully and all of that good stuff i that's that's good value and talking of value we'll come on to
11:39price in a minute because that is particularly impressive and there you have it 37 and a half
11:48thousand pounds that's cheaper than all of the vans in its sector and many of the fans in the sector below
11:57this is an impressively priced vehicle and certainly going to make it so much more affordable to go
12:04electric so that has been a little walk around of the reno master so it is great value the total cost of
12:15ownership is really effective it's got payload it's got range it's got charging speed it's got space and
12:26it's got equipment and comfort and looks kind of like me i know um it's got to be on the shopping
12:37list i think as an electric van i mean it or just as a van because it covers all of the boxes ticks so
12:45many of the boxes whether you're a small business or a large business the reno master certainly gives
12:51you some options especially when you consider that when you compare ice internal combustion engine and
12:58electric vehicle this vehicle is cheaper cheaper before you factor in the energy so if you go to
13:09reno contract hire you will find that the lease costs are less than their diesel counterparts
13:17and that has to be great news so well done reno for making a van that is not only international van of
13:25the year and has a lot going for it but they're also making it cheaper have a great day everybody
13:34and don't forget like and subscribe
