00:00Robots are becoming more and more like humans.
00:02They can build cars, clean your house, and even do parkour.
00:05But in this video, I'm cooking against three levels of robots
00:08to find out who's the better chef, robots or humans.
00:11For level one, Mark Rober will be the judge.
00:13We're going to see if Nick can beat some of the most basic
00:16kitchen robots that money can buy.
00:18In level one, we'll have five speed rounds.
00:20Chopping, stirring, toasting, pizza making, and cleaning.
00:24And to win, it's a classic best three out of five.
00:26Are you team robot or team Nick?
00:28I mean, of course, I am team robot.
00:31For this first mini round, we'll be testing chopping skills.
00:34And in the robot corner, we've got the Roboku.
00:36It's basically an extremely powerful food processor
00:39with a couple of googly eyes to boot.
00:41I like putting googly eyes on my robots.
00:43Are you ready, Nick?
00:44Let's do this.
00:45Start.
00:47No?
00:47I said start, yeah.
00:48I'm taking my time.
00:49I'm not worried.
00:50Oh.
00:50How many do you want me to put in, Nick?
00:52I mean, you're team robot.
00:53That's true.
00:53That feels like a good start.
00:56Oh, no.
00:56That's so fast.
00:58Oh my god.
00:59I didn't even have the time to put it under.
01:02This seems so unfair.
01:05Look at that.
01:06They're like perfect cubes.
01:08Before you actually judge, let's look at our cuts.
01:10Yours aren't even real cubes.
01:11Those are like rectangular prisms.
01:13I mean, this is like laser precision.
01:16As a chef, do you want smaller cubes like that or bigger?
01:18I mean, it takes more skill to make smaller cubes.
01:21I rule in favor of our robot overlord.
01:23For speed round number two, we're going to be testing your stirring skills.
01:26You will be facing off against an army of five stirring robots.
01:30Once again, with googly eyes.
01:31They are very cute.
01:33Because stirring just one pan wouldn't be much of a challenge,
01:36we each have five pans.
01:37But there's just one of me and there are five robots.
01:40We're going to be stirring pine nuts, which are expensive and burn really easily.
01:44So the first person to burn their nuts loses.
01:48That doesn't sound great.
01:50Okay, here we go.
01:51Time to turn on the robot army.
01:53And as soon as I start smelling and especially seeing burnt pine nuts,
01:56somebody's losing.
01:57This seems a little unfair again.
01:59I don't know.
02:00So we're getting good spinning.
02:01But the problem is this is spinning in place and not going to every edge of the pan.
02:05Also, I think like two googly eyes have dropped into the pan.
02:09That feels like a definite points off situation.
02:11I have seen you spill a few nuts and I don't love that, Nick.
02:14Yeah, but your robots aren't even touching the nuts.
02:16I actually think I might win this challenge.
02:18I'm actually going to do something the robots can't do and switch my pans around to kind
02:22of keep things even as well.
02:23And the robots, they just don't have arms.
02:25Ah!
02:26The robot feet are melting!
02:28He's melting!
02:29Stoves off, stoves off.
02:30What happened here?
02:31Disaster on the robot front.
02:33It completely charred these pine nuts.
02:35And on top of that, the plastic feet melted in the pan.
02:40Wow.
02:41This is a nice, even golden brown.
02:43Let me taste test.
02:44That's good.
02:45I don't have the courage to try any of these.
02:48Plastic's not necessarily my thing.
02:50This one's an easy call.
02:52Nick, winner of this round.
02:54We're all tied up heading into speed round number three.
02:56For round three, we'll be testing your ability to make toast.
02:59It's very simple, but easy to screw up from personal experience.
03:03On the robot side, we have this extremely high-tech $500 toaster with a screen.
03:08So where's your screen, Nick?
03:10On the human side, I have a good old pan with some fire.
03:13Is that how you actually make toast at home?
03:15Yeah.
03:15You're so fancy.
03:16At the end of this round, I will judge the winner based on looks and taste.
03:20Here we go.
03:21Oh, wow.
03:22Bread, English muffin, waffle, bagel.
03:25Hey, do your thing.
03:26Don't look over here.
03:27And start.
03:29Oh, there it goes.
03:30So the key to making a nice slice of toast, Mark,
03:32while your toaster just slowly takes its sweet time over there,
03:35I like to quickly hit both sides of the toast right away.
03:38And you have to be very gentle.
03:39You don't want to press into the toast.
03:40Wait, why tweezers?
03:42I'm cooking against a $500 robot.
03:44It's all about precision.
03:45Okay, how are we doing here?
03:46Oh, it's browning.
03:47Oh, I feel like I smell and see smoke, though.
03:49Oh, it's a countdown now.
03:51Seven, six, five.
03:53Yeah, where's your countdown?
03:54Come to Papa.
03:55Oh, wow.
03:57Okay.
03:57Actually, that is pretty exact.
03:59The key with toast is to make sure that the outside is nice and crispy,
04:03while the inside stays nice and light and fluffy.
04:06This is a butter knife, right?
04:07No.
04:08Oh, my gosh.
04:08Look at that.
04:09Oh, wow.
04:09That looks like grilled cheese.
04:11I'm even going to get the sides.
04:12Why don't you do that, toaster?
04:13I'm nervous about this one.
04:15You're putting a lot of chef's kiss in that.
04:17So that I can be a very impartial judge, I'm going to close my eyes,
04:20and it's just the one bite challenge.
04:22You know the rules.
04:23Mark, I'm going to shuffle them around.
04:24Okay.
04:25So number one.
04:26Can you do like an airplane sound?
04:33That makes me want to cry.
04:34It's so good.
04:34Can we just do one more bite at number one before we move on?
04:37Sure.
04:38And with the airplane sounds.
04:44I didn't know toast could taste so good.
04:45Number two.
04:47I'm not doing airplane.
04:48Oh.
04:51By comparison, this is just like a wet sock.
04:54Number one by a nautical mile.
04:57Number one was me.
04:59Wow.
04:59Okay.
04:59Well, I finished eating this.
05:01The score is now humans two, robots one.
05:04For speed round number four, we're going to see who can make the best pizza.
05:07Man versus robot.
05:08And this is a doozy here.
05:10All I have to do is load in the sauce.
05:12Now I just got to add in some cheese.
05:14Put my dough right there.
05:15I haven't even started.
05:16All right, here we go.
05:17It's scanning the pizza.
05:19Look at that laser scan.
05:20Sauce goes on.
05:22Now right here is where it's putting the pepperonis on.
05:24Seems super unfair.
05:26Wow.
05:26Put that in the Louvre.
05:28I want to see how many pizzas I can make in the time it takes you to make one, Nick.
05:31I'm still just rolling out my dough.
05:33Well, I'm over here laser scanning pizzas.
05:35Not only are you taking forever, but you're also making a mess.
05:38Luckily, round five deals with cleaning up messes.
05:41Do you need any help?
05:42Do you know how to make a pizza?
05:43I do not.
05:44At this point, I'm just trying to finish my pizza before Mark makes number four?
05:48Yeah.
05:48Yeah.
05:49All right.
05:49Well, you have exactly 40 seconds.
05:51I can do 40 seconds.
05:52Let's just do a little bit of olive oil.
05:55Oh, never mind.
05:56Zero seconds.
05:56It was done.
05:57I'm done too.
05:58Very, very different looking pizza.
06:00Very different looking.
06:02That looks like it's about to go into an easy bake oven.
06:04Whoa.
06:04These are masterpieces.
06:06Like, put these in a brick oven.
06:08Already, I feel like this is off to an unfair start, but it's not done yet.
06:11I think we should bake them.
06:12We need to bake them.
06:13Okay, time's up at Nick's Pizza.
06:16Looks interesting.
06:17Now, as for the robot, look at that.
06:20Aesthetically, the robot definitely has it at this point, but let's see how they taste.
06:25Human first.
06:27That's like a 4.8.
06:28Now for the robot.
06:30To be honest, the taste is pretty similar.
06:32The robot has a way better ratio of like dough to cheese to pepperoni.
06:36It's just a much more balanced bite.
06:38Robot takes it.
06:39And that means going into the fifth and final round, it's robots two, Nick two.
06:44We are tied.
06:45And speaking of the final round, it's an absolute mess back here thanks to Nick.
06:49Time for our cleanup challenge.
06:50All right, this is it.
06:52Fifth and final round.
06:53Nick, you made quite a mess here.
06:54I'm adding a little extra.
06:55It's you versus the Roomba cleaning robot.
06:58I'm going to divide this down the middle.
07:00You have to clean that side.
07:01The Roomba's got to clean this side.
07:03Why did you give me so much more to clean?
07:05Now remember, this is winner takes all.
07:07Whoever wins this round wins all of level one.
07:10Okay, come on, boy.
07:11Do something.
07:12Oh, wow.
07:12That's good.
07:13That is way cleaner than I was expecting.
07:15Honestly, that's making me extremely nervous.
07:17The problem is he's going the wrong way.
07:20Not to brag, but I'm doing pretty well over here.
07:22Roomba, where are you going?
07:24You hardly did any work.
07:26You didn't earn a docking station.
07:28Oh, here he comes.
07:29Let's go round two, baby.
07:31Oh, he's getting my side dirty again.
07:33Yeah, sabotage.
07:35Robot, where are you going?
07:37No.
07:38I think I'm ready for the final verdict.
07:40Well, given that we were tied heading into this round, Nick,
07:42whoever won this cleanup round wins all of level one.
07:46And after looking at the results,
07:48the winner for all of level one between robots and humans is...
07:54The humans!
07:56Yes!
07:57Nick!
07:58Congratulations!
07:59I am sorry, Mark, because I know you wanted robots to win deep down.
08:04I really did.
08:04Robots, don't let me down in level two.
08:07You got this.
08:08For level two, I'll be cooking against Moli, the world's first fully robotic kitchen.
08:12I'm kind of scared.
08:13It took 10 years of research to make this robot, and it can recreate movements of a professional chef
08:18and has over 5,000 recipes uploaded to its memory.
08:20We're going head to head to see who can make a better pasta dish,
08:23and at the end, a blind taste test will determine who wins this round.
08:26Before we start cooking, I'm going to choose the recipe that Moli is going to make today.
08:30And since we're doing pasta, I'm going to go with a spaghetti puttinesca.
08:33I just found out that this is a kill switch, so if he starts beating me, I'm just going to whack it.
08:37It's time to find out if Moli's really worked that $100,000 price tag.
08:40And here he goes.
08:42First things first, it looks like he's turning on the cooktop.
08:44Oh, we're going for the olive oil.
08:46Good start, Moli.
08:47Now it's grabbing some olives, anchovies, some garlic, some capers.
08:51Sometimes I feel like Moli's just doing fancy movements to flex on all of us.
08:55What? It's using a spatula?
08:56Moli's scraping the bottom of the pan right now,
08:58making sure all those nice little flavorful bits aren't sitting there and burning.
09:02The more I watch right now, the more nervous I'm getting about this competition.
09:05Thinking about pressing the red button.
09:06It just tapped and now is scraping off the extra ingredients on the spatula.
09:10This is unbelievable.
09:11And in we go with the tomato sauce, and he's going to mix it all up.
09:14Here comes the pasta.
09:16Oh, come on with the tap.
09:17That just seems like you're rubbing it in.
09:18Some of that pasta is sitting above the water right now.
09:21So I'm wondering if Moli's going to do anything to make sure that that goes under the water.
09:24Oh, okay.
09:25At this point, you have to wonder if the robot just heard me say that,
09:28or maybe it's just really that smart on its own.
09:30So I'm guessing right now that Moli has it down to an exact timing.
09:33And I'm thinking right now that this might be the most perfectly cooked pasta
09:37I have ever seen in my life.
09:38Oh, you missed a noodle, Moli.
09:40Let me help you.
09:41It's very well cooked.
09:42This here seems like the final step, just throwing in these herbs.
09:45So after one last wipe of the spatula, it looks like the dish is complete.
09:49That was amazing.
09:50The only chance that I might have is if the judge picks up on that some of the pasta
09:53might be a little bit less cooked than the rest of the pasta.
09:56Moli didn't quite fully stir it all the way here,
09:58but I'm going to help Moli plate it onto a nice dish so the judge cannot tell which is the robots
10:03and which is mine.
10:03I'm going into this challenge a bit nervous, but for my dish,
10:06I'll be making an uni butter pasta.
10:08To begin, I'm starting out with this fresh sea urchin.
10:10Sea urchin tastes almost like butter, so it's going to be perfect with our pasta.
10:13First, I'll add these to a small blender, making sure to use plenty.
10:16Then for a bit of acidity, I'll add just a touch of yuzu juice,
10:19and for a bit of color, just a touch of saffron oil.
10:24Now, because we want to make an uni butter,
10:26I'll take a few nice knobs of butter and add that to my uni.
10:29Once it reaches a nice, smooth, and creamy consistency, our uni butter is done.
10:33Now, I'm actually going to cook my pasta a little bit earlier than Moli cooked his.
10:36I'll start by tossing a generous amount of salt into my pasta water,
10:40and then in we go with some fresh homemade pasta.
10:42You hear that, robot? Homemade pasta.
10:44I'll go in with a bit of pasta water to a new pan,
10:47and then drop in a nice few spoonfuls of our fresh uni butter.
10:49We'll mix this together so it forms a nice sauce, and then in goes our pasta.
10:53I know robots aren't supposed to be able to feel emotions,
10:55but I have a feeling Moli's scared right now.
10:57I'll add in my pasta, nice and tight in the center of my plate,
11:00then finish with a nice drizzle of herb oil, a few pieces of fresh sea urchin,
11:03and just a few nice microwaves. Time to see who wins.
11:06After a bit of plating help, here's the robot spaghetti puttanesca,
11:10and here's my dish, an uni butter pasta.
11:12The way they're plated, the judge shouldn't be able to tell who made which dish.
11:15Harrison will be the judge for our blind taste test.
11:17Oh, damn. I'm being honest right now.
11:23I have no clue which one's which.
11:26I'm gonna start with the uni butter pasta.
11:28I've never had uni, by the way, before,
11:29so this is like a first time for everything.
11:32That is insane.
11:33Puttanesca. Here we go.
11:36This is, this is, this is good.
11:38I'm just trying to figure out how has a robot sliced olives put capers over,
11:44but then how have we got uni over here?
11:47I'm so sorry if I get this wrong.
11:49I think the robot made the uni pasta.
11:52I'm gonna say the puttanesca tastes better.
11:56That's made by the robot.
11:57No, it's not.
11:59I'm so sorry.
12:00I just lost to a robot, fair and square.
12:02That means we're tied one to one, and it all comes down to round three.
12:06For level three, our final challenge,
12:07I'll be cooking a steak against Neo Beta, an advanced humanoid robot.
12:11What's up, Neo?
12:12How's it going?
12:13The way this will work is simple.
12:15In front of us are three steaks.
12:16We've got a porterhouse, a filet mignon, and a ribeye.
12:19We're each going to cook one,
12:20and the audience will decide in the comments below who is the true champion.
12:23How about we do rock, paper, scissors to see who picks first?
12:26I'm down for rock, paper, scissors.
12:28You ready?
12:28Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
12:32I beat ya.
12:33Fair is fair.
12:33You get to pick first.
12:34Go ahead.
12:35My dad likes the porterhouse the most.
12:37Personally, I'm usually a ribeye guy, but today I'm going to go with the filet.
12:41You're going with the filet?
12:42Yeah, just a classic cut.
12:43Go for it.
12:43It's all you.
12:44Oh!
12:45I'm probably going to go with the ribeye.
12:47The steaks have been chosen.
12:49Best of luck, Chef Neo.
12:50You got the best chef in.
12:51That's a weak hand shake.
12:53The first thing with a steak, of course, is salt and pepper.
12:55So I'm going to go salt all over my beautiful ribeye,
12:57and I can see you're also starting with your salt.
13:00By the way, how long have you been cooking?
13:01I'm curious.
13:02Three months.
13:02You've only been cooking for three months?
13:04I'm only a year old.
13:04What do you expect?
13:05I read a little bit about cooking steaks on Wikipedia before this.
13:09Nick, I don't know if you know or not, but when you season a steak,
13:12you're supposed to get all the different sides.
13:13I don't know if you're trying to get in my head or what you're doing,
13:15but it's not going to work.
13:16I'm ready to cook.
13:17You know how to turn on the burner?
13:18Of course.
13:19I'm just going to twist this knob real quick, and there it is.
13:22Nice job.
13:23All right.
13:24I'm just going to grab my...
13:25Oh, sorry about that.
13:26That's all right.
13:26That's all right.
13:27Pick it up real quick.
13:28Okay.
13:29That is impressive.
13:30Do you mind if I borrow that?
13:31Yeah, let me just grab it for you real quick.
13:33Thank you so much.
13:33I appreciate it.
13:34Okay, perfect.
13:35So our oil is in both of our pans.
13:37I think my oil is getting to that temp that I'm ready to put my steak in.
13:40What about you?
13:40Me too.
13:41Nick, would you mind handing me that spatula over there?
13:43Yeah, absolutely.
13:44Not a problem at all.
13:44Just going to pick it up nice and careful here.
13:47And just like that.
13:48Nice and easy.
13:49Hey, you ready for this sound?
13:50Yeah, let's see it.
13:52Pretty good.
13:53When you sear, you just want to make sure it's fully flat
13:56to get the best sear possible on the bottom of the steak.
13:58So I'm just applying some light pressure with the spatula here.
14:02I'm going for the flip, Nick.
14:02Check this out.
14:03And there it is.
14:04Oh my gosh.
14:05No way you just did that.
14:07All right.
14:07I'm going to go for my flip now.
14:09Mine doesn't look as good as yours.
14:10All right, Nick.
14:11I'm going to go in for the butter.
14:12Three, two, one, and...
14:16You're actually butter basting now.
14:18How do you even know what that is?
14:20I was watching a lot of Food Network last week.
14:22Mine's actually done.
14:22I'm going to go ahead and start resting it.
14:24I'm not allowed to use knives, so could you help me?
14:27I just need those potatoes behind me over there.
14:29Just chop those up real quick, and I'm just going to make a quick side dish.
14:32Hey, could you just grab me a plate over there?
14:34You're going to keep bossing me around.
14:35And put it right there.
14:36Just rest after like five-ish minutes.
14:38That'd be pretty good.
14:39Bring those potatoes over right about here.
14:41Okay.
14:41And I'll just grab them.
14:42All right.
14:42I'm just going to add a couple into the pan here.
14:44Can I have this very snap, please?
14:45Listen, this is it.
14:47I'm not helping you anymore.
14:48I need to make my chimichurri.
14:49Now I'm going to go in with a bit of olive oil,
14:51then a nice splash of white wine vinegar, then some garlic, fresh parsley.
14:56Whoa.
14:56Just a touch of paprika, a few red pepper flakes, a bit of garlic powder, a touch of salt,
15:00a good amount of fresh cracked pepper, and last but not least, my secret ingredient.
15:04Mm-hmm.
15:05I'm listening.
15:05A few pistachios.
15:07You see what you're up against right now?
15:08Yeah, that's advanced stuff.
15:09Here we go.
15:12You want to taste?
15:13That's real funny, Nick.
15:14Let's just cut the steaks.
15:15Congratulations, Neo.
15:16We've finished cooking both of our steaks.
15:18The question now is, whose do we cut into first?
15:20I think we got to definitely go with yours.
15:22The pressure is on for both of us.
15:24That's right.
15:24I'm going to cut right in the middle.
15:27I'm going to give you a sneak peek first.
15:28What do you think?
15:29Not too shabby.
15:30You can be honest with me.
15:31Are you nervous?
15:31I'm a little nervous.
15:32It is my first time cooking a steak.
15:34Moment of truth, okay?
15:35Three, two, one.
15:38Look at that.
15:39As much as I hate to admit it, it looks like Neo also got a perfect medium rare.
15:43Before you all vote in the comments below who won this challenge, I won the first level,
15:47then the robots won round two with that amazing spaghetti puttanesca.
15:51So it all comes down to this, level three.
15:54Neo, why don't you explain your dish first?
15:55So I prepared for you a filet mignon, perfect medium rare.
15:59And as you can see, we have these beautiful potatoes as well as some perfectly seared asparagus.
16:04I will admit yours actually looks pretty good.
16:06But what I have here is a more flavorful ribeye cooked perfectly medium, which is my personal
16:11favorite.
16:11You and I can agree to disagree on that one.
16:13You're just wrong.
16:14And under it, I've made a pistachio chimichurri and topped it off with a few extra parsley leaves.
16:18Don't let the parsley leaves fool you.
16:19They don't really do much.
16:20All right, guys.
16:21You've seen everything you need to see.
16:22So make sure you go subscribe and then go down to the comments below and say who you think won.
16:26Neo, any last words?
16:27Let's face it, Nick.
16:29Robots are way cooler in every single way possible.
