The DGCA on Monday launched an investigation into the unexpected mid-air deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) on an Air India Boeing 787-8 flying from Amritsar to Birmingham. Flight AI 117 landed safely. The RAT, a small fan-like device, automatically generates emergency power when an aircraft loses all engine power.
Transcript
00:00The center approves the mid-air emergency system deployment on Air India Dreamliner jet.
00:05The DGCA launched a probe into the uncommanded deployment of the emergency turbine mid-air or in Air India flight 117 from Amritsar to Birmingham.
00:16The flight was the Boeing 787A Dreamliner that was involved in the Ahmedabad air crash as well.
00:21A.I. 117 draft deployment incident with the DGCA launching probe into Air India Amritsar Birmingham uncommanded rat deployment incident.
00:33DGCA's air safety department to probe this matter.
00:36An officer from the director of air safety has been assigned for this investigation.
00:41Detailed investigation to be conducted.
00:43Boeing was roped in uncommanded rat or ram air turbine deployment on A.I. 117 that took off from Amritsar on the 4th of October.
00:53The manufacturer of Air India's A.I. 117 craft Boeing investigates uncommanded deployment on the Boeing Dreamliner 7878.
01:03Amit Bhardwaj is getting in more details on that story.
01:06It's a detailed probe that has been ordered.
01:08Amit Bhardwaj, tell us more.
01:10Well, Sneha, right after this incident was reported yesterday, we have been asking questions as to whether the Boeing's role will be also probed into this matter
01:20and as to how Boeing is also looking in the incident of uncommanded rat deployment.
01:27So, for our viewers' understanding, rat is basically a ram air turbine which is deployed as an emergency measure on any craft if there is not sufficient hydraulic or electrical supply to the engine.
01:41So, that itself is an emergency measure to provide electrical or hydraulic power to the craft engine.
01:48So, that was a major incident which happened and that is why yesterday itself, you know, the flight was grounded in Birmingham for detailed investigation.
01:57What we are given to understand at this point in time, the DGCA has launched probe into the entire matter.
02:04And it was first DGCA's airworthiness directorate which was, you know, in consultation with the operator as well as what was the Boeing's recommendation in regards to rat deployment, the uncommanded rat deployment.
02:18And after airworthiness department, this matter has been now given to the air safety directorate of DGCA.
02:25So, the air safety directorate has appointed an officer for a detailed investigation because this is not a normal incident, Sneha, for our viewers' understanding.
02:35Rat does not get deployed normally, you know, until unless there is a loss of supply of power or thrust to the engine.
02:44So, it essentially provides the sufficient electrical and hydraulic power to the engine.
02:49Why that uncommanded, you know, rat deployment happened, that needs to be investigated.
02:55What is a matter of relief at this point in time is that when Boeing, you know, went through the entire aircraft and there were recommendations of maintenance that was provided.
03:05Right.
03:06So far, no discrepancies have been found in this particular craft.
03:09But now the DGCA safety department will be investigating the fact that back to you.
