00:00Big breaking news at the moment where we're calling it Shubaram which means Shubman Gill who was
00:06obviously the captain of the Indian test team did rather well in England has now been made
00:12captain as well in the ODI scheme of thing as well now we're breaking this story here on India
00:20today and very shortly we're going to be joined by a very special guest in Mr. Sunil Gavaskar
00:26and of course we will be talking to him about all the changes that have been made to the team
00:32Saiwai first up your reaction we're calling it Shubaram we've seen Shubman as the captain in the
00:37test court what is your first reaction now to see him being elevated as the captain of the ODI score too
00:43not surprised not surprised because look I think you've got to look forward to 2027
00:50the next 50 overs World Cup is 2027 at the moment you know the T20 captaincy is in the hands of
00:57Surya Kumar Yadav who just won us the Asia Cup about a week ago so and Shubman is the vice captain over
01:05there so clearly I think the message is that he will soon be an all-format captain at the moment
01:11he will be captain two out of the three formats so that is that is what the Indian cricket you know will be looking forward
01:20Saiwai Ajit Agarkar the chairman of selector also said that it's tough to have three different captains in three
01:27different formats because it gets tough for not just selectors but for the coach also to coordinate tell us
01:33from your experience of having played for India for so long does it get very tough then does
01:39the Indian squad across format need one leader so you can be all on the same page
01:44does it make the job easier then to manage the cricket team
01:47well first and foremost the the whoever is going to lead has to be an absolute certainty
01:54he's got to be an automatic pick in the in the 11 not the 14 in the 11 and once he's an automatic pick
02:02and then you know you you you have him as the captain that makes makes a lot of sense
02:07so what you asked was whether it is difficult yes it is not easy uh I don't think it's difficult but
02:14it's not easy for the the the other players in the team who might be playing all three formats
02:21to suddenly you know have look at one person as a captain in one format another person in another
02:25format another person in the third format so it makes sense uh if if there's a player who's a
02:31certainty in all three formats and he's a good enough uh player to captain in one format he should be the
02:36captain in all three formats yes so I'm just looking at Rohit Sharma's record here's a man who's just
02:41recently won the Indian team the champions trophy a few months ago as captain has had a phenomenal
02:47record as captain in 56 odis as captain he has a win percent of 75 percent which is phenomenal
02:54couldn't have been an easy decision to look past him especially considering that he's still part of
02:58that odis squad wouldn't have been an easy decision but I think it is looking forward to 2027 there is
03:05no certainty there's no guarantee that Rohit Sharma will be there for the for the 2027 World Cup so as
03:11much of experience that Shubhman Gill gets as the captain of the one-day team that would be the thinking
03:16as far as the selection committee is concerned give him as much experience as possible as we go on to
03:23the 2027 World Cup in South Africa so I do think the performance of the Indian team under Shubhman Gill
03:30and of course his performance as captain both with the bat as well as a leader in England could also
03:35have nudge the selectors towards taking this decision sooner rather than later oh absolutely yes I think
03:41once you find that the captaincy is not affecting the player's individual performance that's a big
03:46load off as far as the selection committee is concerned because look you don't want to lose a good
03:51player just because you've given him the responsibility of being a captain so anybody who handles the
03:57captain's responsibilities very well does very well with as a captain as well as continues to do well
04:04individually then it's it it is absolutely the best thing that can happen to any team and I think that
04:11is that is where India is really fortunate to have in Shubhman Gill a player who can play in all three formats
04:16do well in all three formats and as we've seen in England and as we as we are seeing at currently
04:22here in Ahmedabad as well that you know when it comes to captaining and not losing his own form he's
04:29very good so as a fine fine reader of the game what do you reckon do you see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
04:36play the 2027 World Cup firstly should we be clubbing the two or do we need to look at them differently
04:42and what do you see as far as their participation in the 2027 World Cup is concerned based on whatever
04:47you've seen in the last few months well it actually depends to a great extent on on the number of one
04:53day matches that India plays over the next couple of years look it's not easy to be playing just five
04:58five ODIs in or eight ODIs in a season preparing for something as big as the World Cup because both of
05:08them have retired from the test as well as the T20 this is the only format that is is left and and as
05:15we have seen over the years the the 50 overs format has as far as bilaterals are concerned is becoming
05:22less and less because more of the T20 so you'll have if there are eight white ball matches you'll
05:28probably have five T20s and three ODIs so that is not giving much much in terms of exposure much in
05:35terms of practice for players who are nudging or coming towards towards 40 so it's not going to be easy at
05:43all for for them because they need to practice at the highest level they will also there that means
05:48they'll also have to play the Vijaya Hazane trophy in India whenever it's played if it doesn't clash with
05:53any international ODI tournaments because that's the one way that you are going to keep and trim keep keep keep
05:58and match practice so it is going to be a tough call really a tough call to to know whether they
06:04are going to be there till 2027 maybe they might themselves decide that this is you know this not
06:09working out and maybe this might be the one place that they want to go I'm pretty certain that if this
06:14this was a trip this would at the moment was a trip to Zimbabwe or or or or the West Indies both of
06:21them would would would not be available because it is Australia I think you know and because India
06:29lost to Australia in the World Cup final maybe that is the reason why both of them have decided
06:33yes I want to be available for this and fair point I think you know they'll be looking at their form
06:38very closely both for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and just to let you know what Ajit Agarkar has also
06:45said because he was asked the same question about the 2027 World Cup and and Virat Kohli and Rohit
06:51Sharma's participation he said that they are at the moment non-committal about you know whether they
06:57are going to be playing for that World Cup in 2027 so that's exactly what he has said that they are
07:05non-committal about World Cup 2027 so there's clearly a conversation that's already happened between
07:11Rohit Sharma chairman of selectors as well as Virat Kohli one final question about captaincy before
07:17I move on to other aspects of the selections if let's say you know Rohit can remain fit and he
07:23can continue to perform with the bat and has the desire to let's say play one another World Cup that
07:28is going to be a swan song in the 2027 World Cup as someone who is sitting on the outside someone
07:33who's seen him be the captain that he is one is going to feel that listen here you have a player
07:38who's playing a World Cup who's part of the squad fit enough to be there but his strongest suit is
07:43his captain see how sharp he is in taking those decisions how best can you utilize that I'm going
07:48to say that as an Indian fan that if I see him in the 11 why can't we have him as captain because he
07:52can do those things which sometime maybe a younger captain may not be able to think how best can
07:57India utilize that if he does indeed want to play that 2027 World Cup look I think what happens is
08:03you know when a senior player who's been a captain you know decides to step away or is replaced
08:09his contribution to the team's strategy does not stop with that there is always the inputs are
08:18always there and Rohit Sharma's inputs will be there Kohli's inputs will be there they will all be there
08:22with Shubh Mangil because it is not a question of anything to do with the individual it's a question
08:29of the pride you get on playing for your country and you want your country to win so when you want
08:34your country to win you will make that little bit of contribution you know I mean as long as the as
08:39the new captain is you know accepting that he doesn't have to go by exactly what you say but as as long as
08:47the as the new captain is is ready to to take these inputs from the senior players they will get
08:53these inputs and they might that might not necessarily be seen on the field of play but it
08:58might be in the change room it might be in the strategy meetings on the eve of the game that you
09:02know they will be making their their contribution so make no mistake I think both Rohit Sharma and Kohli
09:08they will be making their contributions to to Shubh Mangil as to how to go on to beat Australia in Australia
09:15Sahiva the other big omission from that ODI squad is a certain Ravinder Jadeja remember he was part of that
09:21champions trophy squad uh interestingly we're talking about Jadeja on a day that he's been
09:25outstanding for India both with the bat and the ball in the test match that's happening but doesn't
09:29make the ODI squad uh Ajit Agarkur was asked about him he said you know we couldn't have picked those
09:35mini spinners for Australia because they already have a Kuldeep Yadav a Washington Sundar and an Akshar
09:40Patel uh but the fact that an Akshar is playing ahead of a Jadeja the fact that a Washington is playing
09:45ahead of him the fact that a Kuldeep Yadav is playing ahead of him clearly means the competition is
09:49getting tougher how do you see the future for Ravinder Jadeja the ODI cricketer from here on
09:54I think it is going to be tough particularly because of the way Akshar Patel has come through
09:59because of the fact that Akshar is also pretty much in the similar uh as far as everything is
10:06concerned the bowling the batting the fielding uh Akshar is pretty much as as good as Ravinder Jadeja and
10:13much younger and which is the reason why again looking at the 2027 world cup which is the reason why
10:18maybe he's been left out of the team okay another uh senior pro left out of the team
10:23saibai he was also part of that champion's trophy squad that's why i'm just comparing that last ODI
10:27scored now doesn't make it to the t20 setup as well Mohamed Shami do you think Indian cricket has now gone
10:33past him uh yes i think so i think in in in Mohamed Shami's case uh it'll be a real real uphill climb for
10:41him it's going to be very very tough uh uh you know the the injuries that uh he has had uh doesn't
10:47always help for a fastball or having an ankle and a knee injury and a back injury is never never easy
10:52to recover from and which is the reason why perhaps uh you know uh he's not being considerable what a
10:57great cricketer he has been in uh you know he's been for India what a wonderful cricketer he's been
11:02for India saibai i i have a couple of questions on the West Indies series as well and that test match
11:08that India has won in Ahmedabad but before that i i wanted one of your comments on that statement
11:12made by Ajit Agarkar where he talks about Rohit and Virat and their future in ODI cricket he said
11:18they're non-committal uh is it also fair to assume that you know we are talking about should Indian
11:22cricket look at them uh they themselves will have to motivate uh going forward another two years from here
11:28on considering they're not playing any other format uh for India at the moment i mean IPL is
11:33the only other place we'll see them if they're not playing ODI cricket and ODI cricket is that one
11:37format that's not played regularly i think the last ODI India played was in March so would it be tough
11:41for them as well to keep you know in shape to motivate themselves and that's what he means by
11:46they're not really committed to that 2027 world cup so far day as in who the selection committee
11:52is non-committee or Rohit and Virat he said when asked directly
11:56oh okay so i mean this is exactly the point that i made no earlier on that uh you know that because
12:03there's not that much of one day internationals being played by India it is not going to be easy
12:08for for the two of them uh because you know after a certain age you need that constant you know top
12:12class competition to keep your keep your own form very high and and and meeting the demands of
12:19international international cricket so clearly uh uh you know that is something that uh we'll we'll
12:25we'll probably come to know at the end of the uh of this uh tour of australia about what they will
12:31be uh looking to do uh on over to this test match uh saibai and uh you know the Indian team has been
12:37fantastic and i'll ask you about uh certain players but you really have to look at that
12:41competition or the lack of competition coming from west indies we are in a stage where we want you know
12:47test cricket to thrive to survive and then you have a match like this especially after the high of
12:52asia cup uh what is the solution to that we have empty stadiums test match finishing in two and a
12:58half days absolute no competition i think the last time west indies uh you know won a test match in
13:03india was way back in 1994 uh how do you ensure with a no contest like this and ensure that people
13:11flock to the stadium to watch test cricket yes i think it depends on the kind of opposition that
13:17you play but i guess if it was a game against australia i mean we've seen here in amdabad game
13:22against this match against australia a couple of years ago we had almost 60 70 000 people coming
13:28down and not obviously 100 000 people but there were 60 70 000 people coming just about every day
13:34so that was because the competition was good uh sadly uh west indies cricket particularly test
13:40cricket has gone a little bit downhill and so then they're not the kind of team that they were say
13:45maybe even a couple of decades decades back so uh it is up to them india india india can only play
13:52the opposition that's out in the park they can't you know they can't make up their own opposition
13:56so it is for the west indies to to to look at you know the ways that they can they can uh up their
14:03performance uh as far as their bowling is concerned i i think the bowling is not that much of a
14:08a problem but you know when you have batters who are just not able to uh to to build an innings uh
14:15then it's a bit of a worry and which is the reason why the match finished in both innings the west
14:19indies batted i think about 80 overs that's it so that just tells you that you know the the batting
14:25needs to get better yes india at three centurions but i think the batting is i think more more of a
14:31worry for the west indies and the bowling final question uh the biggest positive for india from
14:37this game there were three centurions seven wickets for uh mohammed siraj as well i think the biggest
14:43positive was through jurel uh because he showed that you know he's capable of of batting anywhere
14:49in the order uh he's obviously batting at the number that rishabh panth used to bat with and then
14:54rishabh's injury sadly meant that he was out but it gave jurel a chance and what we have seen from this
15:01young man is great temperament you know what i like about the man is that he's got the technique
15:05sure but he's also got the temperament so he could slot in anywhere he could slot in at number three
15:11he doesn't have to slot in at five or six if when rishabh comes back and rishabh when he when he's okay
15:16rishabh becomes an automatic selection for the test scene no question about it so rishabh will bat at five
15:21and you can have the roof jurel at three there you know i mean so you can still have two two players
15:27because as a batter as a batter he can find a place in the team and that is the important thing
15:32okay we'll leave it at that uh mr gavaskar thank you so much for taking our time speaking to us
15:36here on india today putting things into perspective as far as that big change in indian odi cricket is
15:43concerned you've got a new captain the captain in test match cricket now becomes your odi captain in
15:48that sense end of an era of indian odi cricket with sharma the captain who led you to a t20 world cup
15:55triumph then a champion's trophy triumph is not going to be captain in any format now though
16:00roed sharma the player will continue to play odi cricket
