Takaichi Sanae has won the race for leader of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party and is expected to replace Ishiba Shigeru to become the country's first female prime minister. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, in his capacity as chair of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, and Taiwan's foreign ministry both congratulated Takaichi on her win.
