Hardline conservative Sanae Takaichi was elected Japan's first female prime minister on Tuesday (Oct 21), shattering the nation's glass ceiling and setting it up for a forceful turn to the right.

Takaichi received 237 votes in the lower house election, topping the majority of the 465-seat chamber.

00:55more liberal wing of the party. So I think this is significant within the party's politics
01:01to say that the right to recapture the leadership which they haven't really held I think really
01:06since Prime Minister Abe. I mean I think in order for this to have a big impact on foreign
01:11policy she has to last in power for more than a short period of time. I think for a lot
01:17of leaders around the world when they look at Japan and they see there's a new Prime
01:20Minister they don't hold their breath that this person is going to be around long enough
01:24to actually have a significant impact on foreign policy. I think it's going to be interesting
01:27to see how the relationship between Taka Ishii and Donald Trump evolves. I think in terms
01:33of ideology they seem to be closer bedfellows than Trump and Ishiiwa. Obviously they share
01:39quite a nationalistic agenda. They've both said things that are pretty hostile towards
01:44the foreign residents and population of their respective countries. They're both people who
01:49have been on record questioning the right of the media to hold politicians accountable
01:55and to scrutinise political leaders. So that seems like things that they have in common.
02:01But on the other hand she's talking about wanting to revisit the deal that was done over tariffs
02:05to reduce the amount that Japan has promised to invest in the United States. And she's also
02:10a woman over the age of 40 which is not a demographic that Donald Trump tends to do very well with.
