00:22Well, thank you very much indeed.
00:23Hello, I'm Alexander Armstrong and welcome to Pointless,
00:25the show where we are always striving
00:27to find the most obscure answers.
00:29Let's meet today's players.
00:35And couple number one.
00:37I'm Andrea, this is my husband Adrian
00:39and we live in the West Midlands.
00:40Couple number two.
00:42Hi, I'm Rick, this is my partner Jayden
00:44and we live in London.
00:45Couple number three.
00:46Hi, I'm Jennifer, this is my husband Tony
00:48and we're from Gloucestershire.
00:50And finally, couple number four.
00:52Hi, my name's Connor and this is my mum Siobhan
00:54and we're from a small town in East Lancashire called Baycorp.
00:57And these are today's contestants.
00:59APPLAUSE
01:00Thank you very much, all of you.
01:01A very, very warm welcome to Pointless.
01:02It's lovely to have you all here.
01:04That just leaves one more person for me to introduce.
01:06This former Antiques Roadshow presenter
01:08mentioned how priceless our Pointless trophies are.
01:11And sadly, a truckload of them went missing earlier today.
01:14By the way, I have a small stall at the farmer's market
01:18in Netherwallop next week, just selling a couple of...
01:21Just a couple of TV knick-knacks I've picked up over the years.
01:23It is my Pointless friend, it's Angela Rippon.
01:26APPLAUSE
01:27Well, you never know what may turn up on your stall, of course.
01:31Well, you never know, Angela. You don't.
01:33You never do, my love.
01:34No, I remember...
01:35I think one of the most exciting things that we ever had turn up
01:38when I was presenting the programme was an American lady
01:41who had bought something off a stall in Vietnam
01:44when her husband was based there with the American Air Force.
01:47And the family used it as a milk jug
01:49for their cornflakes in the morning.
01:51I remember Hugo Morley Fletcher, who was the porcelain expert,
01:54his eyes went out on organ stops and he said,
01:57I've only ever seen one of those before and it's got a crack in it
02:00and it's in the British Museum.
02:02And this tiny little milk jug turned out to be a priceless piece
02:06of porcelain, so you never know.
02:09You never do know? No.
02:11Wow. Just have another look up in your...
02:13I'll go and have a look.
02:14..in your knick-knacks. I...
02:19Which means the bric-a-brac, the bric-a-brac.
02:22Thank you very much indeed.
02:24Shall we say hello also to our guests today?
02:28It is lovely to see four of them back,
02:30but welcome now to Jennifer and Tony and to Siobhan and Connor.
02:35We hope you enjoy today's programme, I'm sure you will.
02:37Thanks, Angela.
02:38Now, Jane and Philip won the jackpot last time,
02:40so today's jackpot starts off back at £1,000.
02:43There it is.
02:45Right, if everyone's ready, let's play Pointless.
02:47APPLAUSE
02:53It's just worth bearing in mind
02:54that it's always the pair with the highest score
02:56at the end of each round that gets eliminated,
02:58so if you don't wish to be that pair, keep your scores low.
03:02There we are. Best of luck to all four pairs.
03:04Our first category today is...
03:08..Eurovision Acts.
03:10Can you all decide in your pairs who's going to go first,
03:12who's going to go second?
03:13And whoever's going first, please step up to the podium.
03:20Let's find out what the question is. Here it comes.
03:22We gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many...
03:28..UK participants at Eurovision as they could, Angela.
03:32Yes, indeed, we're looking for the name of any act
03:34that has represented the United Kingdom
03:36at the Eurovision Song Contest.
03:38That is from 1957, which is the first year when the UK took part,
03:42up to and including the 2024 contest.
03:46Where the entrant was a duet,
03:48we will actually require both names, please.
03:51Thank you very much indeed.
03:54Oh, Andrea, I promise you,
03:57they're not always UK-centric, these questions.
04:00Sometimes they're quite international, you know.
04:02I'm guessing you didn't really grow up with Eurovision, did you?
04:04No, I grew up with Soul Train, man.
04:06I have no idea what this is.
04:08I suspected that would be the case.
04:10Well, in which case, this is going to be fun.
04:12Yeah!
04:13Let's put that to the side of our minds for now.
04:15Sure.
04:16While you tell us a little bit more about yourself, Andrea.
04:18All right, so last time I mentioned baseball is life,
04:21and it crossed over into civic duty
04:24because I lobbied the city of Cincinnati, where I'm from,
04:27to name a street after my favourite Reds player, Barry Larkin,
04:31and they did it, and I got to meet him, and it was the best.
04:35The best.
04:36That's extraordinary.
04:37So you started a campaign, Barry Larkin Street Square?
04:40Barry Larkin Way.
04:41Barry Larkin Way.
04:42I emailed Cincinnati City Council every month for two years.
04:48Wow.
04:49I am not dedicated with a lot of stuff,
04:52but I was adamant to make that happen.
04:54And it happened it did.
04:56Yeah, it was boss.
04:57Soon there's going to be an Andrea Square in the West Midlands,
05:00I should think.
05:01Oh, my gosh.
05:02Beautiful.
05:03Yeah, he's selling me some good dreams here.
05:04OK, now, OK.
05:05I'm afraid I'm going to put the kibosh on those
05:07because we are now straight back at Eurovision.
05:09Yeah.
05:10I think the only one I can think of is Sam Ryder.
05:15Sam Ryder.
05:16It's good.
05:17I think.
05:18Let's see how many of our 100 said Sam Ryder.
05:23Sam Ryder.
05:24Absolutely right.
05:26Look at that.
05:27Down and down and down it goes.
05:28Look at that.
05:29Down to 11th, a cracking answer.
05:30Very well done, indeed.
05:3111th.
05:32I can't believe it.
05:33What a start to the show.
05:34What an inspired guest.
05:36As you see, 11 other people came up with Sam Ryder,
05:39who actually turned the UK's fortunes around when, in 2022,
05:44he came second in the competition with a song, Spaceman.
05:48In fact, he was top of the leaderboard after the jury votes,
05:51but the eventual winners, Ukraine, actually received more votes in the televoting.
05:56But well done.
05:57There we go.
05:58Jayden, welcome back.
05:59Hello.
06:00It is show two time.
06:01Yes.
06:02Great to have you with us again.
06:03Tell us more about yourself, Jayden.
06:04So, I'm originally from Singapore.
06:05And yeah, I moved here about three years ago to study my masters in speech and language therapy,
06:13which I am now practicing.
06:14And how did you find it?
06:15Is it pleasing you, your time here in the UK?
06:18I think I definitely, contrary to what a lot of people think, I kind of enjoy the weather here, to be honest.
06:24Yeah.
06:25Because it's cooler.
06:26It's cooler?
06:27Yeah.
06:28Back home, it's hot and humid every single day, so.
06:31And do you know what's exciting is it's full of variety.
06:33Yes.
06:34I have no idea from one minute to the next what might happen.
06:37Jayden, what are you going to go for?
06:39Are you familiar with Eurovision?
06:41No, honestly.
06:42Well, more fun to be had then.
06:43Yeah.
06:45So, I'm going to go with Olly Alexander.
06:48Olly Alexander, says Jayden.
06:50Let's see how many of our 100 said Olly Alexander.
06:53Olly Alexander is right.
07:00It's another great answer.
07:01Look at that.
07:02Down to nine.
07:03Nine, Jayden.
07:04Single digits.
07:05Not bad for someone who says he knows very little at all about Eurovision.
07:09The former Years and Years singer Olly Alexander actually performed under his own name.
07:14He came 18th in 2024 with a song called Dizzy.
07:18Now, it actually got 46 points from all the juries,
07:22but it received nirepoix from all the television people who were voting,
07:27hence the disappointing finish.
07:29That is disappointing.
07:30That must be so disappointing for him.
07:32I know.
07:33I mean, that's the turnaround.
07:34I mean, you'll know only too well.
07:35I presented it in 1977 from Webby.
07:37So you did.
07:38Yes.
07:39Yes.
07:40But all I can say is it remains a blur.
07:42A complete blur to me.
07:43Listen, if you can remember Eurovision 1977, you were a blur.
07:48Now then, Tony.
07:49Hi.
07:50Tony, welcome to Pointless.
07:52May I commend you on your waistcoat?
07:54I like it very much.
07:55Tell us all about yourself.
07:56Well, I'm retired.
07:57And for the last 30 years, I've been involved in helping to run the Dad's Army Appreciation Society.
08:03What?
08:04Now, that's fun.
08:05How amazing.
08:06I mean, was it your idea or did you...
08:08No.
08:09A chap started it.
08:10Bill Pertwee got so much fan mail.
08:12Yeah.
08:13He got this chap to set up the society.
08:16And then myself with two other colleagues took it on.
08:19And we've been doing it ever since, 30 years.
08:21How incredible.
08:22I presume you have members all over the world.
08:23All over the world, yes.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Now then, Tony, what are we going to go for?
08:28UK participants at Eurovision.
08:30I'm going to say The Shadows.
08:33The Shadows.
08:34Shall we see if that's right?
08:36Shall we see how many people said it?
08:37The Shadows.
08:40It's absolutely right.
08:41I could tell by the way you delivered it.
08:43It was going to be right.
08:44Eleven is our high score.
08:45Nine is our low.
08:46You've passed them both.
08:47Danny goes two.
08:48Tony, very well done.
08:50Well done on your answer.
08:52The band, The Shadows, actually came second in 1975 with Let Me Be The One.
08:58They actually lost to the Netherlands that year, who had a song called Ding A Dong,
09:03as all of those songs are now at Eurovision, sung by Tietjen.
09:08Thank you very much indeed.
09:10Now then, Conor, welcome.
09:11Hi.
09:12It's very good to have you here, Conor.
09:13Welcome to Pointless.
09:14Tell us all about yourself.
09:15I am a media student and I work as a children's sports coach, which is a great job.
09:20I love it a lot.
09:21This is fabulous.
09:22So you're a media student.
09:23What year are you in and where?
09:24In Manchester and I am in third year.
09:28And talk me through the sports coaching.
09:30What sports in particular?
09:31Or is it everything?
09:32Well, I mean, it's an array.
09:33I go into primary schools.
09:34I'll do dodgeball, handball, football, you know, we used to start doing ultimate.
09:38A bit of archery.
09:39Yeah, a bit of archery.
09:40Yeah.
09:41I mean, it's a great job.
09:42Every day is different.
09:43That's fantastic.
09:44You get to hang out with kids as well.
09:45Kids are lovely.
09:46I bet.
09:47And I bet they love you too.
09:48Most of them are lovely.
09:49Most of them are lovely.
09:50Now then, Connor.
09:52Yeah.
09:53UK participants in the Eurovision Song Contest.
09:56Yeah.
09:57Well, I'm not 100% certain on this, but I believe Celine Dion.
10:02Celine Dion.
10:03I think so.
10:04Representing the UK.
10:06Let's have a look at that, shall we?
10:09Celine Dion.
10:10Is it right?
10:11And if it is, how many people said it?
10:16I'm sorry, Connor.
10:17I'm sorry.
10:18That's 100 points, not Celine Dion.
10:21She did actually appear in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988.
10:26Celine Dion is Canadian, but she did represent Switzerland
10:30in that competition that year.
10:32We are halfway through the round.
10:33Let's have a quick recap of those scores.
10:34Two, Tony.
10:35That is terrific.
10:36Very well done indeed.
10:37Nine, Jaden.
10:38Also terrific.
10:39Eleven, Andrea.
10:41All these lovely low scores from people who had no interest at all
10:44in Eurovision.
10:45Absolutely fantastic.
10:46And then we travel up to 100.
10:48Connor, who grew up with Eurovision all around him, squandered it.
10:52That's what he did.
10:54100 points there, Connor.
10:56Listen, don't you worry.
10:57It might not be the last 100 in the round.
10:59You never know.
11:00Maybe Siobhan can claw something back.
11:02I don't know.
11:03But good luck with that.
11:04We're going to come back down the line now.
11:05Will the second players please step up to the podium.
11:11Siobhan, welcome to Pointus.
11:12It's great to have you here.
11:13Tell us all about yourself.
11:15I'm a nurse.
11:16I live with Connor, my husband and my daughter.
11:19And we have four cats and two little French Bull Terriers.
11:23All rescues.
11:24Wow.
11:25Yeah.
11:26How do the French Bull Terriers get on with the cats?
11:29Quite well.
11:30They do like to have a little chase now and again.
11:32Yeah.
11:33But they never attack them.
11:34That's nice.
11:35If the cats stop and don't run away, they don't know what to do.
11:39Yes.
11:40I think that's it.
11:41I think that's probably it.
11:42Cats sometimes, yes.
11:43Running away like that.
11:44I think they do it for the sport, the cats.
11:46That's right.
11:47Because they know that it's hilarious.
11:48Yeah.
11:49And they leap up onto a fence.
11:50Yeah.
11:51And just laugh at dogs.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Yeah, that's what I'd do if I was a cat.
11:54Yeah.
11:55Now, Siobhan, you are on 100.
11:57You are the high scorers.
11:58By a little margin, actually.
12:00Yeah.
12:01So, we're going to need a spectacular score from you.
12:03Well, unfortunately, we're not big Eurovision fans in our household.
12:06Fair enough.
12:07So, I'm afraid I'm going to have to say Katrina and the Wave.
12:10Katrina and the Wave, says Siobhan.
12:12Let's see how many of our 100 said that.
12:14There's no red line for you as you are the high scorers, Siobhan.
12:17But where do we end up with Katrina and the Waves?
12:22That's absolutely right.
12:28Down that goes to 18.
12:29Taking your total up to 118.
12:32Not only did they take part, they actually won in 1997
12:36with Love Shine A Light.
12:38And apparently, to date, the UK's most recent Eurovision victory.
12:43We've not done terribly well since.
12:45It did give the group their first UK top ten hit since Walking on Sunshine.
12:50It went to number three in the singles chart.
12:53But that was an inspired answer.
12:55Well done.
12:56You know how we always say every year, oh, it's always loaded against us.
13:01It's funny how, you know, when actually we had Sam Ryder there, who was just outstanding.
13:05Maybe we settle on that little argument a little bit too readily.
13:08Maybe we do.
13:09Maybe we need to pull our socks up.
13:10Yes.
13:11Maybe we do.
13:12Maybe we do.
13:13Thank you very much.
13:14I've got that off my chest now.
13:15And now then, Jennifer, welcome to Pointless.
13:17Lovely to have you here.
13:18Thank you very much.
13:19From Gloucestershire.
13:20That's right.
13:21Absolutely lovely.
13:22And tell us all about yourself.
13:23Well, when I retired, I started doing Open the Book in our local primary school.
13:31We go in and take an assembly and we act out Bible stories with the children.
13:37We get them involved as much as we can, dress them up, and they absolutely love it.
13:42Well, they're always good stories, aren't they?
13:44Yes.
13:45Some cracking tales in there.
13:46Wonderful.
13:47Now, Jennifer, I have great news for you.
13:49I mean, not only on the back of Tony's brilliant low score, but also the fantabulous high score behind you.
13:55You're through to the next round.
13:57That takes the pressure off a little bit.
13:58Have you got a good answer, though?
14:00I hope so.
14:02Sandy Shaw?
14:04Sandy Shaw.
14:05Who could forget Sandy Shaw?
14:07Let's see how many of our 100 said that.
14:08There's no red line for you.
14:09You're already through.
14:14Sandy Shaw is right.
14:18Down goes Sandy Shaw to 33, taking your total up to 35.
14:21I think we probably all remember Sandy because she always liked to perform barefoot, didn't she?
14:25And she certainly did in the Eurovision that year, which was 1967.
14:29She won with the song Puppet on a String.
14:32We have actually won five times in Eurovision.
14:35Yeah.
14:36Thank you very much indeed.
14:37Now, Rick, welcome back to Pointless.
14:39Great to have you here.
14:40Tell us more about yourself, Rick.
14:41So, I'm an occupational therapist.
14:43I work in a wheelchair services, so I kind of help children and adults with postural and mobility needs to access the community and do the things they want to do in life.
14:54Good for you.
14:55And when you're not doing that, Rick, what thrills you?
14:58So, before I told you that I play badminton, I also do a bit of weightlifting as well and CrossFit.
15:04You know.
15:05Are you forever working on new personal bests and things like that?
15:08Well, I'd like to think that.
15:10Yeah.
15:11But, yeah, it kind of gets to a point where things just get very heavy.
15:14It's very heavy.
15:15It's quite an effort to pick them up, so.
15:17There we go.
15:18Anyway, now, Rick, there we are.
15:19We are on nine.
15:20You are through to the next round.
15:21Doesn't matter what you score.
15:22I bet you've got a good answer, though.
15:23I'm going to go for Gina G.
15:26Gina G, says Rick.
15:28No red line.
15:29You're already through.
15:30How many people said Gina G?
15:35Gina G is right.
15:41That's a good answer.
15:42Down to five.
15:43Our second lowest score of the round.
15:45Very well done.
15:46Taking your total up to 14.
15:47And, actually, she's not British.
15:49She's Australian, as you probably know.
15:51She represented the UK, though, in 1996,
15:54with, ooh, ah, just a little bit.
15:57Despite finishing only eighth in the competition,
15:59to date it is still the most recent UK Eurovision entry
16:04to actually top the UK singles chart.
16:07Thank you very much.
16:08Ade, welcome back to Pointless.
16:10Great to have you with us again.
16:11Tell us more about yourself.
16:12I'm an engineer in the Royal Air Force.
16:15I've been doing that for 32 and a bit years and counting.
16:20Goodness me.
16:21Talk me through some of your tattoos.
16:24Some fantastic...
16:25Most of my ink is music-related.
16:27Yes.
16:28I'm really heavily into music.
16:29I've played in bands for most of my life.
16:31Yeah.
16:32And gigs and live music.
16:33It's pretty much what I do in my spare time.
16:35Very good.
16:36So if I like a band enough, they make it to the arm of fame.
16:38They make it onto the arm of fame.
16:39Yeah.
16:40Wow.
16:41Very good indeed.
16:42Now, Ade, you're on 11.
16:43It doesn't matter what you score.
16:44You're through to round two.
16:45What are you going to give me?
16:46OK, so I was racking my brains
16:47because Eurovision isn't really my wheelhouse.
16:49I was going to say, I was wondering how many Eurovision bands
16:51you had on your right arm.
16:53I'm guessing not that many.
16:54No.
16:55I'm going to go for a pointless answer.
16:56I'm going to rack my brains all the way back to the 1970s.
16:59And I seem to recall a song.
17:02Is it Mike Moran and Lindsay DePaul?
17:04Mike Moran and Lindsay DePaul?
17:06Yeah, Rock Bottom.
17:08Oh.
17:09I think.
17:10Andrea, this is the wondrous man you married.
17:13This is why I moved over here.
17:15Yes.
17:16Mike Moran and Lindsay DePaul.
17:18I think.
17:19There is no red line for you because you are already through.
17:22Did anyone say Mike Moran and Lindsay DePaul?
17:25Is it right?
17:26Yeah.
17:27It is right.
17:35Oh, look at that!
17:36You've trailed it as a pointless answer.
17:39And thank goodness it was a pointless answer.
17:41Very well done.
17:42That adds £250 to today's jackpot, taking the total up to £1,250.
17:47It scores you nothing and leaves your total at 11th and is altogether marvellous.
17:52Well done.
17:53You had to dig back into the memory banks there, didn't you?
17:55I did.
17:56But actually, that was the year that I presented Eurovision Song Contest.
18:00I remember watching it.
18:01They were the singers and I couldn't say who it was, of course, could I?
18:04They actually finished second and the song that they sang was called Rock Bottom.
18:08And, of course, it was held in London, it was held up at Wembley.
18:11And you got a pointless answer.
18:13One of over 30 pointless answers that were possible.
18:17So we can take a look at some of them up on the board.
18:19And we've got...
18:20Bell and the Devotions.
18:22Black Lace and Jade Ewan.
18:26Jessica Garlick.
18:27Live Report.
18:28And Lindsay DePaul and Mike Moran, who you actually just said.
18:32Matt Munro.
18:33Patricia Breeden and Suri.
18:36They were all pointless answers as well.
18:37Thank you very much indeed.
18:38That brings us to the end of our first round.
18:40It means we have to say goodbye to our first pair.
18:42Oh, Siobhan and Connor, I'm afraid.
18:44It is you to whom we say goodbye.
18:46But we'll see you next time and look forward to it very much indeed.
18:49Siobhan and Connor.
18:50For the remaining three pairs, though, it is now time for round two.
18:59And there we are.
19:00Down to three pairs.
19:01Very, very well done indeed.
19:02You made the cut.
19:03Ade, in some style, being our lowest individual scorer there.
19:08Lovely pointless answer.
19:09And Ade and Andrea, what a pair.
19:11Fantastic.
19:12You were our lowest combined scorers.
19:14So brilliant work on the near podium.
19:16Best of luck to all three pairs.
19:17Our category for round two today is...
19:19Asian geography.
19:23Can you all decide in your pairs who's going to go first,
19:25who's going to go second?
19:26And whoever's going first, please step up to the podium.
19:34And the question concerns...
19:35Cities in Asia.
19:38On each pass, we're going to give you six clues to cities
19:43that are located on the continent of Asia.
19:46And by Asia, we're including Central Asia, South Asia,
19:50Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
19:53And we will give you the first letters of these cities,
19:55but please give us the most obscure of these names.
19:59Thank you very much indeed.
20:01So let's reveal our first board of clues for cities in Asia.
20:05Here they are.
20:06Japanese city known as Edo until 1868,
20:09whose present-day name translates as Eastern Capital.
20:13T.
20:14The most populous city of Pakistan.
20:16K.
20:17Lying on the north-west coast of Java,
20:19this city was known as Batavia until 1949.
20:24J.
20:26In the Thai language, this city's full name is 168 letters long.
20:31B.
20:32One of the world's coldest capital cities.
20:35Nearby landmarks include a 130-foot statue of Genghis Khan on horseback.
20:40U.
20:41And the Palm Jumeirah artificial islands were created in the early 21st century
20:46off the shoreline of this city, D.
20:50There we are.
20:51Aid, it's over to you.
20:52Great.
20:53OK.
20:54We are not too bad on geography, so I'm going to go for the second one down
20:57and say Karachi.
20:59Karachi says aid for the most populous city of Pakistan.
21:02Let's see how many of our 100 said Karachi.
21:07Karachi's right.
21:08And it goes to 22.
21:09Good start.
21:10Well, the capital of Pakistan is Islamabad, and it has a population of just over 1 million.
21:20But the population of Karachi is just under 15 million.
21:26Crowded city.
21:27Thank you very much indeed, Angela.
21:29Now then, Jennifer.
21:31What are we thinking?
21:32Well, I know a few, but I think I'm going to take a little bit of a risk
21:36because I'm not 100% sure.
21:38And I'll go for the third one down, Jakarta.
21:41Jakarta on the northwest coast of Java.
21:44Shall we see how many of our 100 said Jakarta?
21:48Jakarta's right.
21:5022 is the only score we have.
21:53And Jakarta passes it down to 10.
21:56Very well done indeed.
21:58I think if you've ever been to New York, you will know that the city is known
22:01affectionately as the Big Apple.
22:03Well, Jakarta is affectionately known as the Big Durian.
22:07And Durian, apparently, is a large fruit with a very pungent odour.
22:11In fact, it is so strong that it has been banned on public transport.
22:15Yeah.
22:16And if you like that kind of thing, and I do, it's delicious.
22:20Is it?
22:21I had it in Sri Lanka.
22:22Yeah.
22:23It's got a very high, slightly gamey, cheesy flavour.
22:26I'll take your word for it.
22:28Yum.
22:29Yum, yum, yum.
22:30Jayden, you are the last person to have this board.
22:32Already we've got to that stage of this round.
22:34Do you feel like filling in the blanks for us?
22:36I'll try.
22:38So, the top one, Japanese city is Tokyo.
22:41And then the Thai language city, so it's Bangkok.
22:44Not too sure about the one that starts with U.
22:47And then the last one, I think it's Dubai.
22:50So, I'll try Dubai, I think.
22:52Yeah.
22:53You're going to go for Dubai at the bottom.
22:55Let's see how many of our 100 said Dubai.
22:59Dubai is absolutely right.
23:0122 is our high score.
23:0210 is our low.
23:0327 to Dubai.
23:0427 to Dubai.
23:05Not bad.
23:06Well, Jayden, I think you answered all of them correctly.
23:10There's one that you didn't know the answer to and I wonder if you do by any chance.
23:14The U.
23:15The U.
23:16Yes, Ulaanbaatar.
23:17Ulaanbaatar.
23:18Yes.
23:19And that would have scored you five.
23:20It was the lowest of the scores.
23:22Thank goodness we weren't asked to say the name that has 168 letters in its name.
23:26We just say Bangkok instead.
23:28And it scored 30.
23:29And you were absolutely right, of course, about the first one.
23:32And it was Tokyo and that would have scored 41.
23:35Thank you very much indeed, Angela.
23:36We are halfway through the round.
23:37Let's have a quick recap of those scores.
23:3810, the best score of the past.
23:40Very well done indeed, Jennifer.
23:42Then we travel from there to 22 where we find Aidan, Andrea.
23:45And from there to 27 where we find Jayden and Rick.
23:48I mean, you're a little bit ahead, Rick.
23:50You get the new board.
23:51Find something lovely and low scoring on that.
23:53And it could be a very, very close race for the head-to-head.
23:56Good luck with that.
23:57We're going to come back down the line now.
23:58Will the second players please step up to the podium?
24:03OK, let us put six more clues to cities in Asia up on the board.
24:07And here they come.
24:10Host city of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and then the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, B.
24:16The K-pop groups BTS and Blackpink were formed in this capital city, S.
24:22Located on the Irrawaddy River, this city in Myanmar and the road to it were mentioned in a poem by Rudyard Kipling, M.
24:31Home to the 88-storey Patronus Twin Towers, completed in 1996 and officially opened in 1999, K.L.
24:39This trading centre on the Silk Road became the capital of Tamerlane's Mongol Empire in the 14th century, S.
24:46And located on the Malay Peninsula, this city-state has a cocktail named after it, invented in the Raffles Hotel, S.
24:55There we are.
24:57Rick, we come to you.
24:59You are on 27.
25:00We need a lovely low score from you to bring you back into the fold.
25:05OK.
25:06I think I am going to go for the last one, which is Singapore.
25:12You're going to go for Singapore in honour of Jayden.
25:15There we are.
25:16There's no red line for you as you're the high scorers.
25:18Let's see how many of our 100 said Singapore.
25:20Singapore is right.
25:27Singapore takes you down to 29, taking your total up to 56.
25:32And the cocktail, of course, is the Singapore Sling.
25:35You may have drunk it, you may never have made it, but if you ever do,
25:38the ingredients include gin, Cointreau and pineapple juice.
25:42Mmm.
25:43Thank you very much indeed, Angela.
25:44Now, Tony, we come to you.
25:46There you are on 10, which means 45 or less.
25:49Gets you comfortably into the head-to-head.
25:51It's a tough board for me.
25:53Bit of a guess, I'm afraid.
25:54I'm going to go for the top when I say Beijing.
25:56Beijing.
25:57Says Tony.
25:58Shall we see if that's right?
25:59Shall we see how many of our 100 said it?
26:01Here is your red line.
26:02Let's see if we can get you below that.
26:05Beijing.
26:06Absolutely right.
26:08And you are into the head-to-head.
26:10Very well done indeed, Tony.
26:1131 is what that scores.
26:1341, your total.
26:14And it was in 2022 that Beijing became the first city and, to date,
26:19the only city to host both the Summer and the Winter Olympic Games.
26:25Thank you very much indeed, Angela.
26:27Now, Andrea, there you are on 22.
26:3033 or less is what we require from you.
26:33Would you like to talk us through the board?
26:35The K-pop groups, BTS and Blackpink.
26:37That S should be Seoul.
26:39I am not sure about the city in Myanmar.
26:42The Patronus building is in Kuala Lumpur.
26:46Trading center.
26:47I'm not sure about that one either.
26:49I'm going to have to go with home to the 88-story Patronus Twin Towers
26:53and hope my memory is serving me right, and that is Kuala Lumpur.
26:56OK, KL, Kuala Lumpur, sometimes even known as KL.
27:01Let's find out.
27:02Is that the right answer?
27:03You've got a red line.
27:04It's coming here.
27:05Can we get you below that with Kuala Lumpur?
27:07Kuala Lumpur.
27:14Yep, good enough.
27:15Look at that, exactly.
27:16You needed 33.
27:17You've got 33.
27:18Taking your total up to 55 and getting you into the head-to-head.
27:21Well done.
27:22Well, let's take a look at the rest of the scores.
27:23Andrea, you've given us a couple of them already, but Seoul,
27:26actually, if you'd gone with that, was a slightly better answer.
27:29It scored 24.
27:31And we've only got two left there.
27:33I bet you know the Rudyard Kipling one, don't you?
27:35Mandalay.
27:36Of course, on the road to Mandalay, the famous poem.
27:38Well, Mandalay would have scored you 14.
27:40But the lowest score of all, Samarkand, which scored just one.
27:45Fabulous.
27:46Thank you very much indeed.
27:47Angela, that brings us to the end of our second round.
27:49It means we have to say goodbye to another pair, though.
27:51And Rick and Jaden, I'm afraid, you are that pair.
27:53That is your second show.
27:55We will see you next time.
27:56Thank you very much for playing Rick and Jaden.
27:59For the remaining two pairs, though, now time for the head-to-head.
28:05APPLAUSE
28:08Huge congratulations, Aidan, Andrea, Jennifer and Tony.
28:11You are now one step closer to the final.
28:13And a chance to play for that jackpot,
28:15which currently stands at £1,250.
28:18But I don't think it's going to stand there for very long,
28:20because we have a chance now to throw some more money in there
28:23if we can truffle out a couple of pointless answers.
28:25So here goes, just for fun, you understand.
28:27We gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many...
28:32..species of crocodilians as they could, Angela.
28:37And crocodilians is the order of animals that include, of course,
28:40crocodiles and alligators and so on.
28:42Now, we're going to give you six options.
28:43Two of them will be pointless, two of them will score,
28:45and two of them aren't crocodiles at all, they're red herrings.
28:48And you'll get £250 added to the jackpot
28:51for each pointless answer you can come up with.
28:54Thank you very much.
28:55So can you spot the pointless crocodilians from these six?
29:00I give you Comet Alligator, Gariel, Morleth's Crocodile,
29:06Spectacled Caiman, Pontin's Crocodile and Thomas Stoma.
29:12Does anybody know anything?
29:14Absolutely nothing. No.
29:15In which case, I'm going to come straight to you, Ade and Andrea.
29:19What would you like to nominate as a pointless crocodilian?
29:22I do like saying crocodilian.
29:24It feels so old-fashioned, doesn't it?
29:25It's your word of the day, isn't it? It is.
29:27Possibly of the month.
29:29Yeah, I think we're going to take a wild guess
29:32because we have absolutely no idea.
29:34We're going to go with the second one down, Gariel.
29:37Gariel.
29:38Shall we see if Gariel is a pointless crocodilian?
29:44It's a crocodilian.
29:45Come on, Thomas Stoma.
29:48Yeah.
29:49Yes!
29:50There we are.
29:51Very well done indeed.
29:52Very good.
29:53And there was another pointless crocodile there.
29:56More than that.
29:57Oh!
29:58Right, Jennifer and Tony, over to you.
29:59What do you want to go for?
30:00I'd like to go for the bottom one.
30:01OK, go for the bottom one.
30:02We'll go for the bottom one.
30:03Thomas Stoma?
30:04Yeah.
30:05Thomas Stoma.
30:06Shall we see if Thomas Stoma is a pointless crocodilian?
30:08Yes.
30:09It's a crocodilian.
30:11Come on, Thomas Stoma.
30:13Yes!
30:14There we are.
30:15Very well done indeed.
30:17Very good.
30:19And there was another pointless crocodile there.
30:22Morlitt's crocodile was the other pointless answer there.
30:26Would you mind have a guess at the ones which were not?
30:29Yes.
30:30I think the Pontins Crocodile is probably a ride at a holiday camp.
30:33Almost.
30:34Actually, the Pontins Holiday Camp used to have a children's club
30:38and it was called the Crocodile Club.
30:40So, an association, but not actually the right answer.
30:44And I am also going to go for Comet Alligator as a bread herring.
30:49You're right.
30:50Bill Haley and his comets had a 1950s hit with See You Later Alligator.
30:54There we are.
30:55And just one left and that was the spectacled caiman.
30:58And that would have scored you one.
31:00Thank you very much.
31:01And well done.
31:02You managed to find a pointless answer,
31:03which means you have added £250 to the jackpot,
31:05so it now stands at £1,500.
31:09But who will be playing for it?
31:11Well, you can only find out in the head-to-head.
31:18Now, as ever, the first pair to win two questions
31:20will be playing for that jackpot
31:21and you are now allowed to confer before you give your answers.
31:23Very, very best of luck to both pairs.
31:25Here is our first question.
31:26And it is all about pink films.
31:31And we're going to show you five images from films where the colour pink
31:35has made a significant or a memorable contribution in some way.
31:39We have the initials of the film and the year of its release
31:43and then it's up to you to give us your best film title.
31:46Thank you very much indeed.
31:48Let's reveal our five pink films and here they come.
31:51And here they come.
31:52We have...
31:53We have...
31:54..
32:24There we are. Now, Aidan, Andrea, you get to go first as our golden couple.
32:28OK. Ah, I've seen most of these movies, too.
32:32Ah, no, I thought we should go for it, I think.
32:35Is that A, Mean Girls? OK. We're going to go for A, Mean Girls.
32:39You are going to go for Mean Girls for A, Mean Girls.
32:43Right, Jennifer and Tony, can you talk us through that board?
32:47I only know one. I think I only know one. B?
32:50B? Yeah, go on, then. Barbie. Barbie.
32:53So, we have Mean Girls and we have Barbie.
32:55Ade and Andrea have gone for Mean Girls for A.
32:58Shall we see how many of our 100 said that? Mean Girls.
33:04Mean Girls is right. Down it goes 54.
33:09Meanwhile, Jennifer and Tony have gone for Barbie for B.
33:12Shall we see how many of our 100 said Barbie?
33:17Barbie is right. 87 for Barbie.
33:21That means very well done.
33:22Ade and Andrea, after one question, you are up 1-0.
33:25And you went for the two highest scoring names on the board there.
33:30C, you've got... Pretty in Pink.
33:32Pretty in Pink. That would have scored you 34.
33:35I'm going to leave the other one for a minute.
33:36Legally Blonde was E, 48.
33:40Now, I think I saw Fred Astaire in the back of that photograph.
33:45That's a clue for FF. There he is.
33:47There he is.
33:47Ah, what film is that? FF.
33:50No, I'm not getting it.
33:52Funny Face. Oh, it's Funny Face.
33:54And it's, yeah, 1957, quite an old one.
33:56That one scored you three.
33:58Wow. Beautiful location there.
34:00Isn't it, Jess? Yeah. Lovely.
34:02Thank you very much indeed.
34:03OK, now, here comes your second question.
34:04Jennifer and Tony, you get to answer it first,
34:06but you've got to win this one, stay in the game, so good luck.
34:08Our second question is all about car body types.
34:14Well, we're going to show you five styles of car,
34:17but they have alternate letters missing.
34:20So, please give us your most obscure answer.
34:23Thank you very much indeed.
34:25Let's reveal our body types with bits knocked out.
34:38C-R-I-I and C-N-E-T-B-E.
34:46There we are. We come to Jennifer and Tony first.
34:49I think I only know the middle one.
34:52OK.
34:53I think the only one I can really be sure of is the middle one,
34:55and they say Hatchback.
34:57Hatchback, say Jennifer and Tony.
34:59Now then, Ade and Andrea,
35:01do you want to talk us through that board?
35:04Yeah, OK, so the top one is saloon.
35:07I'm not sure about the second from the bottom.
35:10It looks Italian, which would probably fit in with the question.
35:13And the bottom one will be convertible.
35:16But I think we're going to go for the second one down, Coupe.
35:19Coupe, say Ade and Andrea.
35:21So, we have Hatchback versus Coupe.
35:23Jennifer and Tony went for Hatchback.
35:25Let's see how many of our 100 said that.
35:30Hatchback is good.
35:3449 for Hatchback.
35:35Not bad.
35:37Meanwhile, Ade and Andrea have gone for Coupe.
35:40Shall we see how many of our 100 spotted that?
35:44Coupe's right.
35:48And it wins the point for you.
35:49Very well done, Eddie.
35:50Down to 31 for Coupe.
35:51And that means, Ade and Andrea, after only two questions,
35:55you are straight through to the final.
35:562-0.
35:57You actually did well on at least two of the others on the board there because you gave us saloon at the top there, which would have scored 26.
36:05And at the bottom, convertible, 21.
36:09The last one on the board would have scored one.
36:11It's a very difficult one, actually.
36:13Super mini.
36:14Super mini.
36:15Wow.
36:16Very much indeed.
36:17Well, the pair leaving us at the end of the head-to-head round.
36:19Jennifer and Tony.
36:20It was only your first show.
36:21And look, here you are in the dizzy heights of the head-to-head.
36:24We can take it one step further next time, maybe.
36:27Let's hope we do.
36:28Anyway, Jennifer and Tony, thank you so much for playing.
36:30But to Ade and Andrea, it is now time for the Pointless final.
36:38Congratulations, Ade and Andrea.
36:40You have fought off all the competition and you have won our coveted Pointless Trophy.
36:52You now have a chance to win the Pointless jackpot.
36:55And at the end of today's show, the jackpot is standing at £1,500.
36:59The question is, what's going to help you win it?
37:02What do you want to see come up?
37:03Oh, man.
37:04I mean, baseball.
37:07Classic punk records or 1970s, 80s comedy or American sports.
37:14OK, very good.
37:15Well, let's hope one of these sorts of things.
37:17There'll be four things for you to choose from, anyway.
37:19So, let's see what they are.
37:23Male England footballers overseas in 2023-24.
37:27Fishing, Gilbert and Sullivan, one day on screen.
37:34I mean, fishing is, like, a sport, isn't it?
37:38Gilbert and Sullivan, I have no clue.
37:41Footballers, I don't know enough, I don't know.
37:44The one day on screen?
37:45Could be anything, that.
37:46You want to give it a go?
37:48Yeah. OK, we're going to go with one day on screen.
37:51One day on screen.
37:52OK, Angela.
37:53We are looking for anyone who received an acting credit for the 2011 film,
38:01One Day, or the 2024 Netflix miniseries, One Day.
38:08And this is according to IMDB as of June 2024.
38:13Thank you very much indeed.
38:15Now, as always, you've got up to one minute to come up with three answers.
38:18All you need to win that jackpot is for just one of those answers to be pointless.
38:21If you can find three pointless answers, I will throw in a £500 booster from the goodness
38:26of my own heart.
38:27Are you ready?
38:28Yep.
38:29OK, let's put 60 seconds up on the clock.
38:31There they are.
38:32Your time starts now.
38:33So, I know the one day show is on Netflix.
38:35OK.
38:36And I think they're like in Edinburgh.
38:38And I remember seeing a young lady on there, but I cannot think of her name to save my life.
38:42I have no idea.
38:43Are you familiar with any...?
38:44Is it British or is it American?
38:45No, it's British.
38:46It's not American at all.
38:47One day.
38:48Yeah.
38:49So, it would be...
38:50I'd be in the film 2011.
38:51Like, somebody like Colin Firth be in that or something.
38:54Yeah, we'd have to guess 2011.
38:56Um...
38:57It was a one date.
38:59I have no clue.
39:00I have no idea.
39:01Um...
39:02I don't know why the name Aisling B keeps coming in my head.
39:05Aisling B?
39:06Yeah, I don't...
39:07Is that...?
39:08That's probably not right, but the name keeps...
39:09She's the one...
39:10She was on Taskmaster.
39:11I know who she is, but I don't know why that keeps coming in my head.
39:13Maybe she was in it.
39:14We can go with the guessing.
39:16Yeah.
39:17Um...
39:18The film...
39:19Who are the big actors in 2011 over here?
39:22Ten seconds left.
39:24Um...
39:25We're gonna have to just guess, aren't we?
39:27Uh...
39:28I have no idea.
39:29I really am struggling here.
39:30Okay.
39:31Should've gone with the footballers.
39:33Okay, that is your time up.
39:34I'm so sorry.
39:35It's either not long enough or far too long.
39:37Take your pick.
39:38But, uh, what three answers can you give me?
39:40For the film, we're gonna guess Colin Firth.
39:43Colin Firth.
39:44As good a guess as any.
39:45Yeah, for real.
39:46For the TV series.
39:47Um, Ashlyn B.
39:49Ashlyn B.
39:50And...
39:51Cast of the film, 2011.
39:53Oh, um...
39:55What's his name?
39:57Uh...
39:58David Morrissey.
39:59David Morrissey for the film.
40:01Okay, of those three, which is your best shot at a pointless answer?
40:04None of them.
40:05I'm sorry, I just wanted to say that.
40:06Well, you said Ashlyn B. came into your head, so we might as well put her last.
40:09Let's put Ashlyn B. last, then, shall we?
40:11Least likely to be pointless.
40:12Probably Colin Firth.
40:13Colin Firth and then David Morrissey goes in the middle, so Colin Firth, David Morrissey,
40:18Ashlyn B.
40:19Well, let's put those answers up on the board in that order and here they are.
40:23We have Colin Firth, David Morrissey and Ashlyn B.
40:28Um, they look terrific on the board.
40:30I wonder how terrific they'll look on the column, but we can speculate one of these might
40:34turn out to be pointless and might win you £1,500.
40:37What would you like to do with that aid?
40:38We like to travel, so, uh, and Andrea's got a graduation coming up in the US.
40:42Next year, so we might put it towards that.
40:44Very important.
40:45Andrea, anything else you want to add to that?
40:47I'm going to piggyback on what he said and throw in some baseball games during all that.
40:51Very.
40:52That would be wonderful.
40:53OK.
40:54Well, your first answer was Colin Firth.
40:55Let's see if Colin Firth was in the, uh, 2011 film one day and let's see if he's pointless.
41:01Colin Firth.
41:02Nope.
41:03Bad luck.
41:04Not Colin Firth.
41:05David Morrissey.
41:06You thought he was around then?
41:08Should we see if he was in the 2011 film one day?
41:11David Morrissey.
41:13You thought Aisling B suddenly crept in from nowhere and you thought maybe Aisling B was
41:22in the cast of the 2024 Netflix TV series, Aisling B. Shall we see if that's right?
41:28Oh, well.
41:29I'm so sorry.
41:31I mean, sometimes these things fall beautifully for our finalists and sometimes they don't.
41:36I'm so sorry.
41:37It was a really tough board, that one.
41:38And you gave it your best shot.
41:40So very, very well done.
41:41I'm afraid you haven't won the jackpot today.
41:43But you have won our pointless trophy and that is the important thing.
41:46Thank you so much for playing Aidan and Andrea.
41:48It's been lovely having you on.
41:49Oh, yes.
41:50Aidan and Andrea, I am so sorry.
41:52The categories just didn't fall for you today, did they?
41:55Just to let you know, both the film and the television series were based on the book
42:00one day that was written by David Nicholls.
42:03It became a bestseller when it was published and I think has been again since after the television series.
42:08So let's just take a look at some of the pointless answers.
42:11Jodie Whittaker, Ken Stott, Matt Berry and Patricia Clarkson.
42:16They were in the film in 2011.
42:19In fact, everyone in that was pointless apart from the following.
42:22Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgis, Rafe Spall and Romala Garai.
42:28And if we take a look at the television series, the pointless answers you could have gone for were
42:34Amber Grappi, Essie Davis, Jolie Richardson and Tim McInerney.
42:39The only scoring answers were Leo Woodall, Ambika Maud and Eleanor Tomlinson.
42:46Everyone else was pointless.
42:48So if you watch the series at home, I'm sure you got some of those.
42:52In fact, you might have even got some of the pointless answers.
42:54So well done.
42:55Thank you very much indeed, Angela.
42:57I'm so sorry, Aidan, Andrea, that you didn't win today's jackpot.
43:01It's been lovely having you on the show.
43:02That jackpot will therefore roll over onto the next show when we will be playing for £2,500.
43:08Join us and see if someone can win it.
43:11Meanwhile, it's goodbye from Angela.
43:12Goodbye.
43:13And it's goodbye from me.
43:14Goodbye.
