Women’s World Cup, SLW vs AUSW: Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu said that her team has learned from the mistakes in the Indian game and is ready to face Australia in Colombo.
00:00Thank you everyone for joining us for this pre-match press conference with Sri Lanka Captain Chamari Atapatu.
00:06Please ensure you've got a microphone in your hand before you ask a question, and please raise your hand so we can see and identify you.
00:12Who'd like to go first?
00:15And please ensure that your mobile phones are on mute or vibrate.
00:23Any volunteers?
00:30Anyone at all. Thank you, Daniel.
00:32No worries. Good luck tomorrow.
00:35The key word in your team talks has been resilience.
00:40And now you come after losing the first game, you come taking on the defending champions.
00:44How do you show that resilience here tomorrow?
00:47Actually, the last game, we are playing good cricket, but not the best cricket.
00:54We dropped a few catches in crucial times, so that's why we lost the game.
00:59And as a batting unit, we struggle in the middle of us.
01:04So we have to learn from the mistakes and bounce back.
01:09That's what we want to do.
01:11So yeah, definitely we are resilient.
01:13We've done a few times.
01:14When we are in bad time, we always come up and play our best cricket.
01:19So we know tomorrow is the best, we are playing against top team, like world champions.
01:25So if we can execute right plan, right time, I know we can beat any team.
01:31But execution is the most important thing, rather than skill and mindset.
01:36So we are in good mindset to play in our best cricket.
01:40And you are someone that has had success against Australia individually.
01:44So what do you pass on to the other batters in the team to try and emulate that success?
01:51Yeah, true.
01:52My average is good against Australia in Australia and in here.
01:56Yeah, but the thing is, tomorrow is a fresh day.
02:01As a team, as a player, we have to start again, start from the zero.
02:07And yeah, I want to share my knowledge in the youngsters, especially with our batters.
02:12Because I have a very young batting line-up, so I want to share my knowledge with them.
02:18So the basic is, keep it simple and fearless and play in our best cricket.
02:26So these are the things I noted.
02:30Because everyone knows Australia is one of the best teams in this comp.
02:34And they have good experience in bowling line-up and batting line-up as well.
02:38So if we can play in our best cricket, we can change anything.
02:45Hi, Jabari.
02:46Australia is not a team that you face very often in the international scene.
02:50How do you prepare for a game like that?
02:51Because I think it's been a number of years since you played them in the ODI format.
02:56Yeah, definitely.
02:592019, we were playing last ODI game against them.
03:02The last game I scored 100 in Brisbane.
03:05So after that, we never played against Australia.
03:09Because of the COVID and last circle, Australia is not in our circle.
03:15So we missed Australia series.
03:19Yeah, our preparation is good.
03:22Yeah, I know we are not playing any international game last two, three months.
03:26But we had good domestic season.
03:28Because sometimes as a captain, I can't control those things.
03:32So what I can control, I will control.
03:35So I can control my bat and ball and my players' mindset.
03:40And if we can play in our best cricket, we can beat any team.
03:44Our preparation is good.
03:46Because we are playing against boys' teams and we had domestic competitions.
03:49As a team, we are prepared well.
03:54Unfortunately, the last game, we started really good against India.
03:59In the middle part of the game, we lost a couple of catches.
04:02And as a batting unit, we struggled in the middle of us.
04:05So if we can make those areas, I know we can give good fight against Australia.
04:10Yeah.
04:14Shamri, it's India first and then Australia second.
04:17Two of the toughest games in women's cricket.
04:24First up, is that more pressure on the team or is it less pressure on the team?
04:29And how do you sort of prepare mentally for playing against cricketers of that caliber?
04:35Especially when you don't get to play that level of cricket that often.
04:38Yeah, we are playing two best teams in the first two games.
04:42That's really good for us.
04:43Because then we have some teams we are playing in like South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan, Bangladesh.
04:51Because last 12 months, we beat those teams.
04:5512, 15 months.
04:56So we are playing against best teams in the start of the game.
05:00It's really good because we can prepare well.
05:03And we can adjust our mistakes.
05:06Now we do some mistakes.
05:08So we can prepare well and so we can learn what we've done as a team and what are the mistakes we've done.
05:17How we can bounce back.
05:19And so it's really good.
05:21Because after playing against Australia in India, we have another five games left.
05:26So we can adjust those things.
05:27And especially we are playing against Australia in our home soil.
05:31So we have a little bit good advantage.
05:34But end of the day, we have to play our best cricket.
05:37And just touching upon the mistakes and the drop catches, has there been a bit of extra focus since that India game on just improving the fielding going forward?
05:46Yeah, definitely.
05:47Yeah, definitely.
05:47Catches in matches.
05:48Because in the India game, 25-0s, 125 for six.
05:55We dropped one catch.
05:58I think that catch changed the whole game.
06:02And there will be good partnerships.
06:04And then we dropped a couple of catches and momentum is going to the Indian side.
06:10Then we started as a batting unit, we started really good.
06:13In power play, we lost a few wickets early and we struggled in the batting.
06:22So, these are the areas we have to improve.
06:26If we can improve those areas, definitely we can bounce back.
06:30If we were a little together, we just wanted to improve theses that we have to improve the world.
