00:00Good afternoon everyone, welcome to our pre-match press conference to preview our game against
00:04Crystal Palace. We'll start off with the new sky.
00:06David, first of all, can we get an update on Jarrod Brant, Waite and Merlin Roll and
00:09where they're at?
00:10Well, both the same, no change, none of them fit for the game, but both making progress
00:16and with a bit of luck we'll start to get them on the grass. We've not got them on the
00:20grass yet, training, so that's where we're at.
00:23No Deucebury Hall, obviously, this weekend. Any contact with the PGMOL over the two yellow
00:28cards that have taken into the five yellow card threshold which means he misses the game,
00:32particularly given the yellow card the other night possibly, or probably didn't look like
00:37a foul at all.
00:38Yeah, we have spoken to them and I think they're accepting that both their yellow cards were
00:43wrong. It's amazing, it's a boy who I think if you look through his history, I think he
00:46might have had six bootings last year in total, I think the year before five bootings and he's
00:51never had these numbers at all. So the last two decisions are terrible, really are. More
00:57for the boy. I mean, we're going to miss him greatly, but more for the boy as well because
01:01he's back playing regular now and enjoying his football.
01:05How do you feel when you get an admission like that from the PGMOL? Particularly, I'm
01:10thinking in that instance with Koen and the other night, it seems that he's won the ball
01:14fairly. Not only then there's an attacking situation gone for you, but you've also lost
01:18a player for this game.
01:19Look, the discussions we have with them, we have to, we want to keep them private because
01:25we want to be able, but you asked me the question, have we had correspondence on them? And we
01:29have, yeah, we spoke with them. And I said the acceptance is that they believe that the
01:33two yellow cards were wrong decisions.
01:35No Jack Grealish in the England squad, despite the form that he's shown for you. What are
01:38your thoughts on that?
01:39Well, I'm glad I don't pick the England team because England teams, they've got a great
01:44group of players to choose from. Really, really top players all around the country playing.
01:49Jack's one of them. Jack's in really good form. But again, I don't pick the England team
01:55and I'm glad I don't.
01:56Is it almost a good thing for you though, in so much as it prolongs that motivation that
01:59he really wants to get back?
02:01Yeah. Well, look, I think he's showing the levels that he can get to and I think that we're
02:05hoping that he continues that, builds on it, makes us better with adding more assists and
02:11more goals. That's what we hope for.
02:13Palace are obviously on a 90-game unbeaten run. They've only been beaten twice, that's
02:16by Newcastle and by Manchester City, since you beat them down there in February of last
02:21season. What makes them so difficult?
02:23Well, they are. They've got their own style of play. The manager's done a great job. I think
02:30they've got some incredibly talented players. Good recruitment over the years from Dougie
02:35Friedman and the people who worked inside Crystal Palace. So I think they deserve a lot of credit.
02:43I think building a team is really important and I like the people who try to build teams
02:48and obviously they've not done it with huge resources. Crystal Palace sometimes can take
02:54a bit of time. Sometimes you can have a few bumps in the road. I think they didn't win
02:59any games at the start of last season possibly. So it just shows you, stick with your manager,
03:05keep with him, believe in what he's doing and you can look how well they're doing. The manager's
03:12had a good history in Europe. He's got them back in Europe again now and I think they'll
03:16bring him a good chance of winning the Conference League as well.
03:20Matteta is one player that seems to have had a big part in what they've done as well. He
03:25also falls into the category of strikers who've taken a bit of time to get up to those kind
03:30of levels as well. I'm just thinking, we probably saw against Brighton with the goals that you
03:35scored there, the importance of the link up play from your main striker. I just wonder
03:39what challenge then that Tierno and Beto are facing to produce more of that across 90 minutes
03:46so they become that real focal point of your attack and give you that platform.
03:50Still getting used to it. Beto done brilliantly well for us from January onwards last year.
03:55He was as good as any striker in the league at the time. Scored goals, helped make goals.
04:00So he done incredibly well. Barry's a new young striker coming to the Premier League.
04:06I can talk about many young strikers who come, take time to settle in. If you're going to expect
04:12something from them immediately well, you're wrong to expect that. I think it can happen,
04:16but I still think that you have to give them time to settle. We'll try and do that with Barry.
04:21How do you do that day-to-day with them as well in the work that you do with them?
04:25Well, we give them loads of encouragement, but we're also trying to sort of nurture them
04:30through and give them the right ideas. I think in my first period here as a manager,
04:35I think we brought in quite a lot of players. Most of them were in the Championship.
04:39Most of them had to wait about six months before they got into the team.
04:42I'm not saying we're quite in the same era or the same time, but those boys had to wait their time.
04:47That could have been Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, you can go on and name how many of them you like,
04:52who had to take a bit of time to settle in. So I'm not in a great hurry for them to be playing all the time.
04:58And if it takes a little bit of time to settle in, so be it.
05:02You've obviously given yourself a platform and the start that you've had to the season.
05:05So what would you have said if you'd been offered the top ten spot going into the second international break?
05:10Well, I'd have taken that. I think you need to probably think back to where we were this time last year
05:16and the way we were, how we were going to be as a football club.
05:21So I think we were with a positive start. I think we could have taken more points. I really do.
05:27I think if there was a disappointment from it is that we've not taken more.
05:30I think that would be the message. And I'm sure that's the message in the dressing room.
05:34And that's the way they feel as well. They know it as well.
05:36We probably could have taken more.
05:39So that's a challenge to keep it up, you know.
05:42If you gave me this position at the end of the season, I'd be absolutely delighted
05:46because it would be a huge improvement on where we've been.
05:49But we're actually striving for more and hoping that we can get more.
05:52Thanks, David.
05:55Hello again.
05:56How are you doing?
05:57I'm good, thank you.
05:58This, if it starts of course, will be Jordan Pickford's 300th Premier League appearance.
06:03It will be, yes.
06:04He's still as bonkers and crazy, but he's not as football as he was back on game number one as well.
06:11What sort of example is he for the rest of the team here?
06:15Well, the bonkers bit, I don't know if that's a good example.
06:19But I think that all round, he's a really good goalkeeper.
06:23He always was, you know, very good shot stopper and great kicker of the ball.
06:30You know, he's improved as well.
06:32I can see him as well.
06:33He's growing with maturity as well.
06:34I think being involved with England more regular in the level of the players.
06:38And what you hope that your players, when they go in that environment, they pick up from the best.
06:43From Harry Kane, Declan Rice.
06:45You know, all the top, top people he's played with and all the senior professionals.
06:49You hope that he brings that back and brings it back into the dressing room.
06:52And as much as we know, he's got that giddy element to him as well.
06:56He sets his own bar very high, doesn't he, in terms of his professionalism?
07:00Yeah, he does.
07:01You know, he's got that bit about him.
07:03But behind the scenes, he's a really serious goalkeeper who works hard at his work.
07:08Prepares himself the best he can.
07:10And look, he's done really well for Everton, I know that.
07:14He's certainly someone who I believe has done really well for England as well over the years.
07:19So he's an experienced goalkeeper and long may that continue and he keeps doing well.
07:24How long can he keep continuing?
07:27He seems to me like he's still a young lad, he probably is.
07:31Yeah, he acts as a really young lad, which is good.
07:36But he's also an experienced player who's got the knowledge and been in a lot of the big occasions.
07:41So he's made some great saves for us at different times.
07:44And I think more of his experience, especially the last season, I thought when I came in,
07:49you know him, Tarki, Jared were really important to us, making sure that we were a Premier League club.
07:55Thanks Simon, we'll go to Julia.
07:57Hi Julia.
07:58Just on that, Michael Keane on the score sheet again on Monday night and he's been putting in some really good performances.
08:06I know he said in the summer he didn't sign up to make the numbers up but he was ready to fight for that.
08:10And you were saying you had Jared, Tarki and Pickford were your three at the back.
08:15But has he given you more of a decision when Jared comes back?
08:19He has, but I think at the end of last season, I think he played against Newcastle, he played against Fulham.
08:23I think we won both the games away from home. He scored and certainly scored in the Fulham game.
08:28I think he's played really well. I think he's an experienced centre-half who, having one of them,
08:34and I'm going to put the word maybe we saw him as cover for the others, but he showed that when he stepped in
08:39he's warranted his place. He's played really well, got me a really good goal in midweek.
08:44Everybody keeps talking about his ability to score and he has got an ability to score.
08:50He's one of the centre-half group who I think can do that and score goals.
08:55And he's done that in a short time for me, so really plays for him and I hope he keeps his form up.
09:02The England manager, when he has announced his squad, said he felt Jack Greenish is almost back to his best
09:07and the player that everyone knows he can be. What more do you feel Jack has to do here to get to that level then?
09:13I agree with some of that. I think there's still room for Jack to continue to improve.
09:18I think we want more assists from him. We want goals from him as well.
09:23I mean, he's started very well. I think he's probably got the best assists still in the country at the moment.
09:28But I think we're driving him on, trying to get more from him.
09:32I think the more he plays and the more he gets used to us as well.
09:35You've got to remember, he's only really here a couple of months, but he's started really well.
09:39Look, I don't know if he's going to be out of England, then he'll focus on hopefully having the best career he possibly can now.
09:47But I still think his ambition is to get back in England team.
09:51And if he scores some goals and he keeps up the assists, then he'll not be far away.
09:56Because I think players who score and create goals, I think are so important.
10:01And England will need it because they'll be needing people who are creative in the final third.
10:05Going into this round of games, you have made the lowest number of substitutes so far in the league.
10:11Right.
10:12The top is Wolves with 30.
10:14I'm just wondering, do you feel you've got enough on your bench to change things?
10:17Or has that always been the plan going into games to make fewer changes?
10:21It's funny, if you said that, I'd always look at Pep.
10:24And Pep always made his substitutions very late in games.
10:26I didn't think he was someone who made subs very early.
10:29And I always looked at him as a little bit of someone who has probably got the idea.
10:36There's a big change in football at the moment.
10:38You make subs, fresh legs, accept all that.
10:41Absolutely.
10:42But there is other ways to go about it as well.
10:44But no, I've felt we've got a much stronger squad in bench than we've had for a long, long time.
10:50And we are able to make changes if we need be.
10:52But sometimes there's no need to make the changes well.
10:55You just don't do it for change's sake.
10:58Illiman has been speaking this week about his role on the right.
11:02And we were used to seeing him on the left-hand side.
11:05And he said himself he feels his numbers need to increase much more than they have been.
11:09Do you feel it takes him time even though it's a similar situation but he's on the right-hand side?
11:13Will it take a bit more time for him to get into that role?
11:15It will take him a bit of time.
11:17And we might change him over at different times.
11:20We might put him back to the left when we think it's the right moment.
11:23Or if different things change, we can play him as a number 10 as well.
11:27We can do that role as well.
11:29We can think about how we play early at different times.
11:33But the one thing he has done is he continues to perform really well early.
11:37He gets goals for us as well, which is something which we're trying to keep up.
11:42So let's hope he keeps his form up.
11:48He's doing very well on the right as well as the left.
11:50He's played really well and impressed me in both positions.
11:53And we'll see you later.
11:54We could have more trouble if we can sometimes?
11:55If you have questions?
11:56We could have more or less.
11:57But, that'd be the last thing.
11:58Ok, and well can I also think we want to wrap geme1s.
11:59Unaib2 will find those questions ratites to remind them of this.
12:00Well, really pretty soon, thank you.
12:01Welp with investigate the Sorplers on the left,
12:02and that's such a proposals go,
12:03update Mattino and Rookset.
12:04So if we're going to get to the right sign their way derrière it.
12:05Let's get into verse 2, Barberian.
12:07Well, see what we're going to do around the next talk is!
12:08I'm trying to put threeominions.
12:09Me as opposed topm in the coming in this petty business area…
