05:09the team is working in 400 square kilometers of the Okavangu Delta

05:17summer is approaching and the flood is drying up

05:22aggressive intruder males have forced the couldn't moms to retreat far to the south

05:29but in the north

05:33well there they are a splinter group of the pride's youngest lionesses has remained and must survive

05:41on its own

05:42he goes Gordon is following them we've got the females without clubs trying to hunt zebra up

06:14the lionesses in front of me they are around about three or four years old and they've

06:24formed this little subgroup or splinter of the good and pride

06:29they are the daughters of big toe and madumo they're the sort of equivalent of carefree

06:37teenagers

06:38they are the only ones that haven't moved out of the historic heart of the territory where

06:47all these intruder males are coming in

06:50for any female with cubs that is a concern there's danger there is threat to the cubs

06:57for these cubless females there's no threat or concern they see them as an opportunity to

07:05breed to have cubs to be a mum

07:07it will be really interesting to follow these females if there is to be a split in the good and pride

07:15it could well happen with them

07:18i've just seen movement coming from the base of the termite now

07:30with no sign of pobe and beau after the leopard attack

08:49cerami is the first of the splinter group lionesses to breed

08:53as far as i'm aware we don't know who cerami has mated with

08:59we've got intruder males running about left right and center

09:05so there's a high chance that one of those lions could be the dad of these cubs

09:14but which one it is is anybody's guess

09:18i don't know why she's chosen

09:22i don't know why she's chosen here of all places to den

09:26it's really exposed

09:28there's a high amount of traffic coming through

09:30because we've got water on both sides

09:34it just doesn't really feel like the right place to have cubs

09:38cubs that are only two or three weeks old

09:41first time mom cerami has a lot to learn

09:47i can't imagine how difficult the next few weeks and months are going to be for her

09:51so i'm going to stick with her because i think it's going to be a tricky time

13:46nello's survival is not only about catching a meal

13:52it's about keeping it too

13:55nello's just dragging this impala kill into the shade

14:02she's had a great amount of this meal she's going to be good for the next couple of days

14:14it's amazing to see this young cheetah surviving and thriving here in the okavango

14:18only five percent of cheetahs make it to this stage in life

14:24nello is proof that bob is a fantastic mother and there's still a lot of hope for both

14:29brad is searching for ladiba the leopard and her five-month-old cub

14:45she's looking skinny again it's been 10 days now since she's had a real sort of settled

15:04meal that she can really feed on it's a stressful time

15:06dominant male leopard bongway remains in the area providing stability for ladiba

15:18but her cub now needs two pounds of meat per day

15:22please it's time to be successful

15:26it's still too young to hunt so ladiba is under pressure to provide for them both

15:36this is where she's drinking it's a little seep the flood is drying up but this hole provides access

15:46to groundwater she's got a bird obviously she's surprised a bird that was drinking and a black

15:55collared barber came out and she grabbed it

16:01that's just remarkable i've never seen a leopard deliberately kill something so small to eat

16:06this is rare birds make up just one percent of leopard diets learning a lot about lidiba's character

16:19catching birds is probably enough to sustain her but for the cub she's going to be under increasing

16:26pressure to actually provide kills and the pressure is going to melt so this is a win for her but not

16:34for the entire family

16:42tristan is with lidiba's cub

16:45how's it brad yeah i'm losing light this side you want to come in with the camera

16:52she's in our way ladiba is returning empty-handed

16:56brad's gonna start to follow these guys into the night and see what they get up to

17:07the diva is just flat on the tom of mountain above with the covers

17:16she's been really struggling she's only been eating small things not enough to to give to the cub

17:22covers come and joined and you can see as she lies there's a ring of heat around her paws and her nose

17:34and her face and she's just slowly resting

17:41i would never have guessed that leopards and cubs at that stage are

17:45that intimate quite an incredible thing to see

17:54this is leopards at their at their best and as far as i'm concerned at their cutest

18:09so

18:18with pabe and beau still missing

18:20anna is checking on new lion mum cerami

18:24we are with a group of lionesses in really close proximity to the den i'm on the way to you now i'll

18:32be there in about five minutes some of the splinter group has joined her how are they so close why are

18:41they so close oh the cubs are with them

18:50this is so bizarre

18:52normally mums don't introduce their cubs to the rest of the pride until they're six to eight weeks

19:02old those cubs are still tiny cerami shouldn't be introducing her cubs to any other lions when they're

19:11this little the only time that i would really expect there to be other lionesses around cubs this small

19:19would be if they also had cubs themselves and they were alloparenting but

19:24these lionesses don't have any cubs

19:28so this feels really dangerous

19:32with so many intruder males in the area and no indication of who their father is

19:39these cubs are vulnerable

19:40cerami it's definitely doing things differently

19:53my goodness me i think the cubs are very hungry

19:58at three weeks old lion cubs should suckle every four to six hours

20:02what something happened there that she didn't like

20:10they tried to suckle from mum but mum got uncomfortable and has left them

20:16it's now almost 12 hours since the crew last saw the cubs feed

20:21going now to the auntie to try and suckle and obviously auntie can't help them with anything

20:25that's what they're going to do

20:28cerami is the only mother in this group of females so these cubs only have one

20:33possible suckling opportunity

20:40goodness me what the heck this lioness is really not loving these cubs

20:45wow this is another auntie who's growling at these cubs what's wrong

20:59there's absolutely no way in now cerami seems to want a break from her cubs

21:08i feel for them they're just waiting on the outskirts waiting to just have a chance to drink

21:13one of the cubs has got the nerve to come in here it's trying to get close to mum

21:19and this lioness is just fully aggro

21:25and that just shouts inexperience it shows to me that this lioness and the others have not

21:31had much time around cubs at all with no other kudum pride mums to learn from

21:38come on come on cabo all i want to see is a cub latch onto her teeth and drink

21:45cerami is struggling to find her feet the cubs seem confused

21:52i think these two cubs have been introduced to other female lions too early and they may not

22:00be able to recognize which lioness is mom and which of these lionesses is not

22:09they don't know who mum is

22:18she's just sneaking into this forest

22:20the diva has stashed her cub and is hunting again

22:34this elephant's browsing here making a hell of a noise and she's kind of using that

22:40leopards will use distractions from other animals to get closer to prey

22:45i don't know what she's seen but it's something of interest the only thing i can see is elephants

22:57she's after monkeys that's what she's after after vervets

23:01having still not caught anything big enough to share with her cub

23:06this is how desperate she's getting ladiba is going for something small again

23:11she has climbed into the tree with all these vervets and she was jumping from branch to branch in the

23:17treetops trying to catch a vervet out of the monkey out of the tree showing her unbelievable agility

23:25and frustration i guess

23:30just chaos absolute chaos

23:33it's not typical prey for her but you know she's she's really really hungry

23:37incredible climbing ability you don't see it until these leopards are in full chase way up in the trees

23:53she's just really going too extreme to have a go at anything she can

24:07it's just in bread got a bit of a stalemate brad's camera is struggling in the fading light

24:15it's a bit too dark so we're going to switch the thermal imaging camera and just try keep up

24:19so he's calling in tristan to help

24:57it happened while we were rigging the the thermal camera which is very very impressive

25:04i've never actually seen a leopard catch run on the floor though before so this is quite new to me

25:10i think we're starting to really understand a lot more about this particular cat it's just the first

25:18leopard that i've seen in this area that is so specifically focused on small prey species

25:28we're learning we're learning about the diva

25:32i'm very very happy for her and it's a decent sized meal but i doubt the cub will be able to get anything

25:39off this um and they're going to probably still be hungry tonight

25:47set sets for greg at cerami's den these poor cubs have been trying their best to get a drink

25:54his aunties have been trying a good are you free to take over hey greg copy that yeah they need to

26:02drink more sets and gordon are starting the night shift i'll let you know how it goes in the morning

26:21lionesses they are up and looks like they're going to look for some fruit for the evening

26:31she's looking a bit skinny and that's not good for her all the cubs so getting something to eat

27:04okay yeah i've got them adapted to water even experienced lions struggle to catch lechway

27:15the lionesses have split into two roots of two

27:20this is an example of lions working together using stealth but also using strategy

27:26this is amazing

27:40she's up to her knees at the moment to walk through the water without being detected is a real challenge

27:49oh that's what oh panic panic amongst all of these lechway the strategy is to push the lechway into the

28:05oncoming lionesses

28:06they really went for it

28:13teeth from way too far but it was a good attempt but cerami is not giving up

28:21look at that she's just like a crocodile lying away there she is completely submerged in the water

28:31she's up to her chin

28:34as long as she can hear those lechway moving around her there's no reason to move

28:42i'm impressed this is pure maternal determination

28:58goose she's got a goose crazy crazy crazy oh my words in all the commotion cerami has got nothing

29:12a goose will barely feed one of them

29:16i've lost everyone they've crossed over the water yet again

29:21but in a place where we can't follow looks like this is it for tonight

29:53oh wow this is really quite interesting because we've got one of big tool medumo's daughters with

30:02a strange male it's one of cerami's splinter group he is a big boy

30:08he's a blondie i'm gonna call him golden boy because of his mane

30:22a male and a female hanging out like this can only mean one thing that they're

30:27a courting couple that they're gonna mate golden boy is the latest intruder male

30:34making himself at home in the kudum pride territory

30:39as sad as it is to think that big tomoduma's time at the top is coming to an end in many ways it's

30:45exciting because there's other males that are going to step in that will become the pride males of the

30:51kudum pride someone like him he might be a rising star he certainly looks as if he's made from the right

30:59stuff but golden boy's presence big strong handsome it's obviously working on this female could be a danger

31:08to cerami's cubs if he's not their father

31:20the diva is high up in a ebony tree that's fruiting to feed her cub ladiba's changing her tactics

31:37fruiting trees play such a big role in this area ebony fruits full of sugar lots of protein and when they

31:45dropping their fruits everything that's utilizing there's a herd of impala rams that was breaking

31:52the way down picking up the fallen fruit between them and the diva she's using the fruit as bait

32:02and that focused activity from evany tree to evany tree is pattern that these leopards have figured out

32:08to conserve energy leopards often wait for prey to come to them i haven't seen the diva jump onto an

32:18impala from a tree yet let's hope she doesn't injure herself and let's hope these impala get to the tree

32:27ladiba's taking a risk to catch larger prey it's just a waiting game

32:38it's now 1 15 in the afternoon over six hours have passed she's been in this tree the whole time

32:55and just patience patience patience

32:59the diva's still eyes fixated on the impalas coming down the tree line towards her

33:09now we've got a single ram he's now closest that we've had to

33:17this ram that's completely unaware of the diva in the tree above him

33:26my heart is pounding under my chest right now

33:31she must be eight nine meters off the ground

33:34it's about positioning so she doesn't impal herself on her hands

33:42a mistake here could be fatal he's directly underneath her

34:04i feel so sorry for her she needed that i was to spend all that time waiting

34:38you know it's dangerous doing something from that height if she falls weirdly or

35:05so our new lion mom and her cubs with a couple of the lionesses just resting in the shade

35:20being nearer the water is cooler for the lionesses

35:23oh my goodness gracious me but cerami's siblings are still stopping the cubs from suckling

35:37and resting here exposes them to a new danger

35:42a weak elephant is a potential prey for a lion so elephants do not like to share any space with lions

35:54something tells me that those little lion cubs do not have the legs on them to outrun an elephant

36:00this is a particularly dangerous situation for the cubs

36:07this family of elephants outmatches cerami and the other lionesses

36:11okay our moms are pulling out they're leaving the cubs behind there's nothing that cerami can do here

36:42the lionesses look like they want to charge in and push the ellies

37:51cubs are somewhere in this tall fire grass

39:59I've heard all this commotion on the edge of the floodplain, and I've got Sarami and

40:10her sisters on a kill, and a whole bunch of ahinas trying to steal it from me.

40:17Leaving her cubs at the den, Sarami and the splinter group have finally caught a meal.

40:23These lionesses must have killed us early hours of the morning, and now they're being

40:30mobbed.

40:31There's an interesting equation to these kind of interactions, it's based on weight.

40:36Three hyenas weigh the same as one lioness.

40:39We've got four lionesses here, so we'll need 12 hyenas before a real battle starts.

40:46Despite their immaturity, these young females are keeping their food.

40:53Part of the tactic of hyenas is making a huge racket.

40:57And essentially it's calling to arms, and if there's any hyenas with an earshot of this

41:03they're going to come in.

41:04I hope they hold on to it, Sarami's really been struggling and she's a new mom, and if

41:10she doesn't get fed, her milk will start to dry, and that's not good for her cubs.

41:16They just mustn't fall for the intimidation.

41:24See the minutes one pulls away from the rest of the tribe, those hyenas just see the weakness,

41:29so just target her.

41:31It's amazing, you know, they'll walk within a couple of meters and literally just stand.

41:34I mean, if I was a lioness, I wouldn't be lacking this.

41:47The lions are starting to move away, led by our new mum.

41:59Finally outnumbered, the lionesses are leaving, but with full bellies.

42:23It's been two weeks since the team saw Ladiba catch a large meal.

42:26It looks like this girl's definitely just going on a bit of a march today.

46:26this is a mature coalition of males we don't know them very well but they are starting to become

46:34quite a lot more present in the good and prior territory they're resting close to sarami's den

46:48they are only about 150 meters from the last night location of sarami and had two new cubs

46:57so this feels really dangerous if neither males the father the cubs are in danger

47:11but sarami's not and she hasn't been seen at the den for 24 hours now

47:18and i'm getting fairly stressed because if golden boy and his coalition partner catch scent of these

47:27two cubs there is a very big chance he's going to kill them

47:31i'm having issues getting this thermal camera going two hours have passed

47:44sarami is still not back and the cubs are still on their own

47:49i have a feeling there's something wrong with one of the cables i've already called them to camp so

47:54they're bringing a replacement but i'm just stressed that something's going to happen
