00:00We've picked up the rogue boys intruding to the max.
00:07Oh my gosh, they are making a racket.
00:14We're right in the center of the Kudum Pride territory,
00:17and I can't exaggerate that enough.
00:20Four intruding male lions,
00:24the rogue boys are advancing towards the Kudum Pride.
00:29This is the greatest threat so far.
00:32These boys could very easily kill all the cubs.
00:42The Okavango Delta in Botswana.
00:46We are in a pristine environment right now.
00:48One of Africa's last wildernesses.
00:52The magnitude of life here is unparalleled.
00:55And it's a haven for Africa's big cats.
01:00Lion, cheetah and leopard.
01:05Big cat country.
01:08Armed with the latest filming technology,
01:11the Big Cats 24-17 is following individual big cats for six months.
01:18This is a unique opportunity to follow these cats round the clock.
01:23Through the day.
01:25I used to think I'd have a fair fight with a lion.
01:28Not so sure now.
01:30And the night.
01:32We've got the most sophisticated thermal imaging technologies.
01:37Capturing their behavior 24 hours a day.
01:41I have never seen anything like this.
01:44Epic!
01:46This program was made possible in part by...
01:56Irene Catherine Joseph Buczynski.
02:01And by contributions to your PBS station from viewers like you.
02:14Gordon, Gordon, for Greg?
02:16Yeah, Greg, go ahead.
02:17The intruder males are roaring and causing so much raucous and just full-on drama.
02:24With the Kudum Pride males missing, the Rogue Boys are making their presence known.
02:30OK, we're just going to look for the cubs.
02:34Gordon is searching for the Pride's most vulnerable members.
02:38It's young cubs.
02:41We've got some lions up ahead.
02:44The Rogue Boys' roars travel more than eight kilometres.
02:49When they hear these rogue males and intruder males calling,
02:52there's concern, there's threat and there's danger.
02:55The females with cubs, they are moving out of the core part of the territory.
02:59This is the furthest south that I've seen them.
03:07Separating from the rest of the Pride,
03:10and keeping so many cubs on the move, is dangerous.
03:16It stopped.
03:18But these mums with young cubs have no choice.
03:23In a good position, they're up on this termite mound here.
03:26So anything that is coming through this area,
03:31what they're going to see.
03:33You're just doing a little count.
03:36We've got nine.
03:41Nine cubs.
03:43These eight-month-old cubs belong to Pride Mothers, Naledi, Sebe, and Mato.
03:59They are all hanging out together because they've all got cubs of the same ages.
04:03My respect goes to these females because they're doing all the hard work,
04:08keeping these cubs alive.
04:11While Big Toe and Madumo, the heads of the Coodum Pride,
04:16they're the dominant males.
04:18They're nowhere to be seen.
04:20That's been a week since I've seen Madumo.
04:25And for Big Toe, that's three weeks since anyone has seen them.
04:31So when it comes to invading males,
04:33the burden of protecting the cubs
04:36just lands on the shoulders of the females.
04:38Right.
04:43They're on the move.
04:45The best thing we can do is just stick with them.
04:54Water levels are at their lowest in this 400 square kilometres
04:58of the Okavango Delta.
05:00The annual flood will soon arrive,
05:09making it harder for Mato, Naledi, Sebe, and their cubs
05:14to move freely.
05:18Every single one of them walking in the same direction.
05:23They must put distance between themselves and the Rogue Boys,
05:27who adjust five kilometres to their north,
05:30while they still can.
05:34Greg, Greg for Gordon.
05:36Go ahead.
05:37All those cubs are still alive and well.
05:40That is amazing.
05:42We're going to stick with the Rogue Boys.
05:52Sets is joining Greg to keep track of the Rogue Boys.
05:57Oh, my goodness.
05:58They are on a buffalo kill.
06:00Three sub-adults.
06:02And the big male is right here in front of me.
06:07Oh, my gosh.
06:09Really interesting update.
06:13They've killed the buffalo in the centre of the Kutum Lion Territory.
06:19It means they are willing to challenge Big Tone Mudumo,
06:23our dominant males.
06:25They really seem to be making themselves at home.
06:29And have the nerve to make a large kill.
06:35The Rogue Boys are staking a claim to Kutum Pride Territory.
06:39And everything in it.
06:41Dude, what is going on?
06:46I have no idea. This is truly insane.
06:49They're not even trying to hide.
06:51No, they're not.
06:53They're made a kill to prove a point.
06:55Yeah.
06:57They're a very interesting coalition of one huge male with three sub-adults.
07:02Adult male lions form coalitions, lifetime partnerships for protection and strength.
07:13Typically, you don't find coalitions like this, with vastly different age in the same coalition.
07:21I wonder if it's a father and sons, potentially?
07:27They've got a huge coalition leader.
07:30He's in his prime.
07:32We have decided to call him Dimo.
07:35Dimo just means a giant.
07:37Like, you can see the size of his mane and how dark it is.
07:40This coalition looks like it's been fighting quite a lot.
07:46You can take an example of this youngster here.
07:49He has a lot of battle scars on his face.
07:54With no pride of their own, the Rogue Boys are looking for one to take over.
08:01These Rogue Boys, they're going to want to mate with the females.
08:05And that'll mean killing cubs.
08:06They want those mothers to come back into Easter so that they can have their own cubs.
08:15And no one is defending this territory.
08:18It's crazy, hey?
08:20It's going to be really hard to fight off these Rogue Boys.
08:23Rogue Boys.
08:34Tristan, Tristan, Brad.
08:36Yeah, Brad.
08:37Just found Diba.
08:41Leopard specialists Brad and Tristan have found new mum La Diba.
08:46They're both cubs.
08:47They're both cubs.
08:51Come on.
09:01Just too cute.
09:03The Diba has two cubs, three and a half months old.
09:07Really quite sweet.
09:13They've got this whole nursery area that their mother's put them into.
09:17And she'll walk in and call, and then they'll reveal themselves to her.
09:23Lediba's cubs are too young to go with her when she hunts.
09:28So the nursery keeps them hidden.
09:32It's a perfect nursery here.
09:34It's a thick, thick sage.
09:37You know, it's a lot of places these cubs can learn, play and run around.
09:42There's nowhere really better suited to a leopard raising their cubs than an area quite like this.
09:56I love that interaction between a mom and a cub.
10:00Something so gentle and beautiful about it.
10:04Lediba is suckling this one cub. It's a pretty little thing.
10:12It's a busy time for a mom. Two cubs that are highly mobile and needing to be fed.
10:18She'll have a good session of eating, and then she'll do her long hunting forays.
10:27Lediba must hunt every two to three days, traveling kilometers from the nursery.
10:33She can't be there all the time.
10:38Leopard cubs have very high mortality rates.
10:41They don't have somebody else to look after them.
10:46This is one of the most vulnerable times in a leopard cub's life.
10:51Sun's just dipping behind the tree line, and Lediba's now on the move.
11:11She's heading off on another hunt.
11:13As Brad follows Lediba away from the nursery, she hides in some bushes.
11:27There's a male sitting here on the road.
11:30Tris Trisp is a male right in the heart of Lediba's territory.
11:37He's a big boy.
11:38Okay, copy that.
11:39Yeah, that's not great news.
11:42He's picking up her scent, and he's definitely interested.
11:45Brad and Tristan have already experienced how brutal male leopards can be.
11:50Male leopards are notorious for killing cubs.
11:56We were just so happy with her having cubs in this area,
12:02because there's very little male traffic through here.
12:06And just when you say that, a big male rocks up.
12:11You can see the way his tail is twitching.
12:25He's definitely on her scent.
12:28I just hope that she doesn't lead him back to where she's keeping those cubs.
12:41He's letting Lediba know that he's here.
12:50I'm going to sleep easy tonight.
13:05The lion mums are still moving their young cubs south.
13:11To their north, the intruding rogue boys have left their buffalo carcass unguarded.
13:25Oh, this is ballsy.
13:29Some other members of the Kudum Pride have found it.
13:34These two boys are enjoying a free meal.
13:38It's the Pride's two sub-adult males.
13:41This is really bold of him.
13:47The rogue boys, they are heading to have a drink at a nearby waterhole,
13:52not far from here, about 500 metres.
13:57He's quite nervous looking around,
13:59because he knows when those males come back,
14:02it is not going to be pretty.
14:03These two youngsters might look almost fully grown.
14:10But the rogue boys' leader, Demo,
14:24is almost twice their weight.
14:26The big boy, he is about 50 metres behind me.
14:34He's advancing.
14:35You can see how massive he is.
14:48He is showing signs of aggression.
14:52His body posture.
14:53Oh, he's chasing, he's chasing.
15:01Oh, the lions have run off.
15:04They ran like hell out of there.
15:06Hopefully they're safe.
15:07Demo is victorious.
15:22He is going to feel a sense of pride and accomplishments.
15:25Two sub-adults are no match for Demo.
15:32The absence of Big Toe and Madumo
15:35is leaving the pride defenceless.
15:43It just shows how bold he is.
15:47It's a clear challenge.
15:49Demo and the rogue boys are now taking more ground,
16:01moving south towards the mums and young cubs.
16:06Just begs the question,
16:09where are they turning to Demo
16:11when all of this is happening?
16:19Cheetah team, cheetah team.
16:35Got Bobby and the cubs.
16:38Excellent.
16:39I will be there ASAP.
16:43Rhea and Anna are with cheetah mum, Bobby.
16:49and her five-month-old cubs.
16:54It's pretty cool to watch these guys.
16:56I mean, when we're following them every single day,
16:58you literally see their development.
17:00It's like having your own baby.
17:02Going from crawling to walking.
17:05It's a feel of accomplishment
17:06watching your little children grow up.
17:09Now Rhea and Anna know the cubs,
17:11they've named them.
17:13Kia, the confident female,
17:16and Bo, her shy brother.
17:19Only a few weeks ago,
17:21they were reliant on their mum's milk.
17:24But now, they are full-blown carnivores.
17:33Cubs are looking pretty hungry.
17:35Their bellies are concave.
17:39Kia and Bo must now eat
17:41more than a pound of meat a day.
17:43Cubs are really far in the distance.
17:52This could be a moment
17:53for Bobby to get a successful hunt in
17:55without her cubs distracting her.
18:01Bobby needs to catch a meal
18:03every day to feed the cubs.
18:05She went.
18:23She went, she went, she went for them.
18:25They should be coming out to your side.
18:29Where is she?
18:29She's done it.
18:47Well done, Bobby.
18:48What an absolute genius.
18:52Guys, she's got one.
18:53She's got one.
18:53My hands are shaking.
18:58Everything is shaking.
19:00But it was incredible.
19:03And, you know,
19:05she's done that for her cubs.
19:08And I can see them coming in.
19:09This is going to be an absolute feast
19:16for these two.
19:19What Kia and Bo need
19:21is for mummy to open up this carcass
19:23so they can have a meal.
19:25The cubs' teeth won't be sharp enough
19:28to tear through skin
19:29for another two months.
19:33Bobby needs to catch her breath
19:35a little bit.
19:36Cheetah's main tactic for hunting
19:37is a full-on sprint.
19:41Sometimes being able to go up
19:42over 100 kilometers per hour.
19:45Very hard for cheetahs.
19:46They are not really able to sweat properly.
19:48You can see her right now.
19:49She's having a very heavy pant.
19:55That's just to help with cooling.
20:00This is a really dangerous time
20:02for a cheetah
20:03because there was quite a lot of commotion
20:06when that all went down.
20:07A lot of alarm calls.
20:08Cheetahs lose one in ten
20:10of their meals
20:11to other predators.
20:13Pretty much every single predator
20:16can chase
20:16our lovely cheetahs
20:18off this kill.
20:19Sadly for them,
20:20amongst all our big cats,
20:21they are the underdogs.
20:24Being such a small cat
20:25like a cheetah,
20:26you really are down
20:26the pecking order.
20:28The challenge for Pobé now
20:29is keeping hold of their meal.
20:39With the annual flood due any day...
20:42Hey, girls.
20:45We have run into the mums and cubs.
20:47Greg has found the Pride's mums
20:51and youngest cubs.
20:54The Smaledi, Sebe and Mato
20:56were their crew of cubs.
20:59At the southern limit
21:00of Kudum Pride territory.
21:05The lionesses are all
21:06very much on edge
21:07about male lions.
21:09And there's just anxiety
21:10and stress
21:11some built-up tension.
21:20Hold on.
21:21I think we have
21:21another lion there.
21:26Oh, it's big male.
21:32Who is this?
21:34Here comes Mato,
21:36the most formidable lioness.
21:39Mato is approaching
21:40as if this could be
21:41one of the intruders.
21:48Oh, she's upset.
22:01Wait a minute.
22:03I think that this is Mato.
22:08Big toe has
22:09very obvious eyebrows.
22:11Whereas Mado does not.
22:22I'm so pleased to see Mado back,
22:24looking strong and healthy
22:26at a time when we've had
22:28so much upheaval
22:30from the Rogue Boys.
22:34Mato looked so angry.
22:36She was ready for battle.
22:39She was just assuming
22:40that every male
22:42that approaches her
22:43is about to go
22:43after her cubs.
22:44That was amazing
22:45just aggression from her.
22:49Even Madumo
22:50has to approach
22:51with caution.
22:54Now that the mums,
22:56including Mato,
22:57have calmed down,
22:58everyone's approaching Madumo.
23:01Oh, it's a snuggle
23:07with Dad.
23:11The cubs are so excited.
23:13That's so sweet.
23:16Gordon, Gordon,
23:17for Greg.
23:18Hey, Greg, go.
23:20Madumo is back in town.
23:22Wow.
23:22Madumo, my boy.
23:26He is a handsome fellow.
23:34Last time I saw him,
23:36he was severely skinny.
23:38Look at him.
23:38He's put on a lot more weight.
23:42One question I always have
23:44whenever I see
23:45Madumo on his own
23:46is with his big toe.
23:48Lately, Madumo has been seen
23:52with the pride
23:53from time to time.
23:55But his coalition partner,
23:57Bigto,
23:58has now been missing
23:59for almost a month.
24:02Since we've been
24:03following the pride,
24:05I've never had it
24:06that the big boys
24:07have been separated
24:09for so long.
24:12Alone, Madumo
24:13is no match
24:14for the four
24:15advancing rogue boys.
24:17No matter how
24:18determined
24:18and how strong
24:19and how big he is,
24:20he's not going to win
24:21against multiple lions.
24:23So,
24:24until we find Bigto,
24:26it's still a very
24:29precarious moment
24:30for the pride.
24:41Proud, Proud,
24:42for Tristan.
24:43Hey, Tristan.
24:45The Divas' cubs
24:46disappeared.
24:48Tristan and Brad
24:49are checking in
24:52on Ladiba.
24:53What I hope is
24:54it's not the male
24:55she bumped into.
24:57After finding a male leopard
24:59close to her nursery.
25:02Ladiba's back
25:03in the nursery area.
25:05One cub's showed up.
25:08Looks like mum might be
25:09trying to pick up
25:09the second one now.
25:10and she seems
25:12to be getting
25:13a little bit concerned.
25:29She's calling,
25:31searching,
25:32broadcasting
25:32her presence.
25:33The male cub
25:44is missing.
25:52I've never seen
25:54this amount of
25:56vocalization
25:58coming from a single leopard
25:59in such a short
26:00space of time.
26:09She's just
26:10desperate for a response.
26:13And she's just
26:14not getting it.
26:14she's soaring.
26:22She's soaring.
26:30This call,
26:31known as soaring,
26:33is unique to each
26:34individual leopard
26:35and can travel
26:37almost three kilometres.
26:40The fact that
26:41she's trying this hard
26:42really starts to
26:44scare me,
26:46to be honest.
26:48It's not a good sign.
26:52The longer
26:53it's missing,
26:55the lower
26:57its chances
26:58drop.
27:01Less than 50%
27:02actually survive.
27:03because they do
27:05get left alone.
27:06They do
27:07have to
27:07fend for themselves.
27:11Now she's
27:12high up.
27:13She's increasing
27:14her
27:14throw of her
27:15core.
27:17She's throwing
27:17caution to the
27:18window.
27:19She may draw
27:20other predators
27:21and
27:21I think what
27:23we're seeing
27:24is a very
27:24desperate mother.
27:33it's looking
27:38more and more
27:39likely that
27:39we've lost
27:39a cub already.
27:40life for all
28:05the big cats
28:06of the Okavango
28:07Delta
28:07is about
28:08to change.
28:12I actually
28:13buy the flood.
28:15The annual flood
28:17has arrived.
28:19We're expecting
28:20it to be here
28:21within the next week
28:23but it's here now.
28:25This is now.
28:29This is the first
28:30time seeing the flood
28:31come in
28:32in real time.
28:33I have something
28:43amazing to show
28:44you.
28:45I'm intrigued.
28:47We're on the right
28:48road.
28:48I can see your
28:49tracks.
28:49So, yeah,
28:50we'll bump
28:50into you soon.
28:56The waters of
28:57Yokavango
28:58have come
28:59a long way.
29:01Close to
29:02600 kilometers
29:04from the
29:05highlands of
29:06Angola
29:07through three
29:08countries.
29:09Finally ending up
29:10in Botswana.
29:11It goes from
29:12pure dry
29:13floodplain
29:13to a
29:14flowing river
29:15within a
29:16matter of
29:16hours.
29:19To create
29:20a spectacle
29:21that's beyond
29:22roads.
29:27Whoa, whoa, whoa.
29:28Whoa.
29:32I don't need to ask
29:34what you've got to show me.
29:35Oh, yeah.
29:35You can see it already.
29:37The speed.
29:38It's as I was here
29:39yesterday, it was just
29:40bone dry.
29:41Yeah, it was
29:41completely dry.
29:42Yeah.
29:43It's really going to
29:44affect the lions.
29:45It really is.
29:47The territory is going
29:48to shrink.
29:49These waters, they are
29:50dangerous for them.
29:52Yeah.
29:53For the mums and
29:54smaller cubs, they'll
29:56be restricted.
29:57They can't really move
29:58around as freely as
29:59they used to before the
30:01flood has arrived.
30:02There's less dry
30:04ground.
30:05Yeah.
30:05With the floodwaters
30:11rising, the mums and
30:14cubs are running out
30:15of safe space.
30:18The rogue boys are now
30:20just a kilometer away.
30:23I don't know if anyone
30:24else heard that, but I
30:25heard some roaring.
30:26It's demon.
30:28This is a sign that
30:29these boys mean
30:30business.
30:31The mums and cubs
30:38can't rest.
30:42On a still night like
30:44this, demons roar
30:45will carry throughout
30:47this whole territory.
30:49What he's saying is,
30:50be afraid.
30:52Be very afraid.
30:53This is when it all
31:07starts to get a little
31:08bit scary for tutors,
31:10especially when they're
31:11on a fresh kill.
31:12Anna is with Pobbe and
31:17her cubs.
31:20They still have the
31:21kill.
31:22Nothing's coming to take
31:23it.
31:24I think that could be
31:26something to do with
31:26her smart tactics,
31:29which involve basically
31:31covering the carcass with
31:33dust.
31:33She's trying to cover the
31:34scent.
31:35Because when it turns to
31:37night, things start to get
31:39a little bit dangerous
31:40around here.
31:41Pobbe needs to be on
31:48high alert all of the
31:50time.
31:53Who knows what
31:54predators could be
31:55lurking in the shadows?
32:03I wonder if there's
32:04something there.
32:11Oh, jackal.
32:16The cubs are essentially
32:17learning how to guard their
32:19food against animals.
32:22And level one is the
32:25lovely jackal.
32:27jackal doesn't really pose much
32:36of a threat for these cubs.
32:51I am super chuffed that Pobbe and
32:56the cubs have managed to keep
32:58hold of this meal.
32:59But it's when the big things
33:00come in, like lions and
33:02leopards, that's when it's
33:04going to get really real for
33:05these cubs.
33:06The flood is making it harder for the
33:29mums with young cubs to escape.
33:30I think quite like crashing through a floodplain.
33:39To stop the advancing rogue boys, the pride needs both of its dominant males.
33:45Loads of vultures here.
33:48What's going on?
33:50So Greg is searching for big toe.
33:56We've looked in all the regular spots.
33:59So we're going to look in areas that we
34:01would never normally go.
34:09Oh!
34:09I think we've got big toe tracks.
34:17Yes!
34:18Finally!
34:21Ha ha!
34:25He must be not far from here.
34:28Let's go and find him.
34:36Oh!
34:37Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
34:39Somebody's up ahead of us.
34:44This is a big male lion just in front of me.
34:49Who is this?
34:53Oh, oh, gosh.
34:58Please, please, please, please, please, please.
35:00Come on.
35:06Come on.
35:07It's big toe.
35:09Yes!
35:11What?
35:11I can see those eyebrows
35:16The mighty big toe
35:20He's back in the game
35:23Greg has finally found big toe
35:26But he's a long way from the usual pride territory
35:30This is an area where I've in fact never seen any of the Kudum pride before
35:36And it begs the question
35:39Where has big toe been this whole time that he's been missing?
35:46But he's definitely on some sort of mission here
35:55It looks like he's about to cross the water
35:58I haven't seen him for weeks
36:03And it seems like I'm only going to have him for a few minutes
36:08Come on big toe, don't do this to me now
36:15Please
36:17I'm just not sure how I'm going to follow him
36:22Because I don't want to get stuck
36:25Alright
36:27We're going to have to do a big water crossing here
36:32Oh, that's not ideal
36:34Oh, it's deep
36:42It's flowing
36:43It's flowing
36:46Not too bad
36:51We're through
36:52This is wild
36:55Trying to keep up with big toe through the fresh flood
36:58This is not for the faint hearted
36:59Not for the faint hearted
37:08He's just picked up a scent
37:11And he's following it very intently
37:14He's sniffing, sniffing, sniffing
37:16He's trying to find another lion
37:30Oh, okay
37:31We've just got a visual of other lions now
37:38Who are these lions?
37:40What's going on here?
37:41What's going on here?
37:44It's very, very strange
37:52I can't believe this
37:54This is not a good in pride
38:00This is a whole different pride
38:02It appears that big toe
38:05Has another pride
38:09Well, that was unexpected
38:12At a time when the Kudum prod
38:14You know, needs them the most
38:17That is a problem
38:20That is a big problem
38:24Gordon, Gordon for Greg
38:26Go, Greg
38:27Gordon
38:28You are not going to believe this
38:29But I finally found big toe
38:32He's busy fooling around with other lionesses
38:36You are kidding me
38:38Not good
38:39Not good at all
38:47Wait a minute
38:50Looks like there's actually another male here as well
38:56Remember
38:58This is in fact
39:00This is in fact
39:02Madumo
39:08That is unbelievable
39:13The dominant males
39:15Have been dividing their time
39:17Between the Kudum pride
39:19And this new pride
39:22What's happening is
39:24Our big males
39:26Are mating with other lions
39:29And that's why we don't see them very often
39:32While Madumo has been coming and going
39:35Big toe has been here
39:40What's potentially at play here
39:42Is the fact that amongst the Kudum pride lionesses
39:45All the older lionesses have cubs at the moment
39:48And there's a fair chance that all the younger lionesses
39:51Are related to Madumo and Big toe
39:54In fact they could be their daughters
39:56So the mating opportunities within the pride are limited
40:00That might explain why the boys have gone outside
40:05To look for the chance of siring more cubs
40:09The problem is if they're paying so much attention to other lionesses
40:14They're neglecting the Kudum pride
40:16And that's why we've had so much drama and chaos
40:21And that is going to be a very serious risk to those cubs
40:25The Kudum pride mums have been left to defend their cubs alone
40:37From the advancing rogue boys
40:38Tristan, Tristan, bro
40:50Yeah, bro
40:52It's not exactly looking very good, is it?
41:01Ladiba the leopard
41:02Has been searching for her missing cub
41:07For almost two days
41:11But there's no sign of it
41:14Well, she's led us back to one cub
41:17One cub
41:33She is entirely
41:35That one's world
41:47Just one
42:01I think she's moving it to a new space
42:07Yeah, no, Domica
42:17I just hope now with all her attention focused on a single individual
42:22That cub stands a better chance of staying alive
42:27It's still a miracle in itself that she has one healthy, surviving and thriving really
42:34And it's a testament to her abilities as a mother
42:39Ladiba's surviving cub will soon pass this most vulnerable age
42:44And leave the nursery with her
42:48When she hunts
42:57Pobbe the cheetah is looking for her next meal
43:00Wow, I think she's going to go
43:03I think she's going to go
43:14Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go
43:32Yup, she's done it again
43:34Pobbe, pobbe, pobbe
43:36These two cubs are insanely lucky that they've got Pobbe as their mum.
43:48Cheetah mum Pobbe has secured her cubs another meal.
43:55As long as she can keep it through another night.
44:06I am really, really chuffed for Pobbe and the cubs.
44:18She's doing an incredible job at feeding them.
44:25Wait a second.
44:26What has she seen?
44:29Pobbe looks like she's...
44:34..getting into, like, a weird stalk mode.
44:37She's seen something.
44:44There is something...
44:49..sat about 100 metres from that.
44:55That is big.
45:00Oh, God, I think that is a leopard. That is a male leopard.
45:04It's running in. It's running in.
45:11It's running in.
45:12I think she's trying to lure this leopard away from the cubs.
45:13It feels like a mad move from Pobbe.
45:14I think she's trying to lure this leopard away from the cubs.
45:15It feels like a mad move from Pobbe.
45:16This hungry male leopard is one and a half times Pobbe's weight.
45:17And could easily overpower the leopard.
45:18It feels like a mad move from Pobbe.
45:20This hungry male leopard is one and a half times Pobbe's weight.
45:21And could easily overpower her.
45:27Pobbe can't save her food.
45:28But she can protect her cubs.
45:31Pobbe can't save her food.
45:32But she can protect her cubs.
45:33this leopard away from the cubs this feels like a mad move from probably this hungry male leopard
45:42is one and a half times pabe's weight and could easily overpower her
45:51pabe can't save her food but she can protect her cubs
45:56she's jumped at it she just jumped on the floor to try and make a sound to lure it away she's so so clever
46:11pabe might be smaller than the leopard
46:19but she has one clear advantage
46:21pabe is not at her max effort in terms of speed but that leopard is really
46:27struggling to keep up with her this is crazy
46:51so
47:03pabe has diverted the leopard's attention from the cubs
47:09okay this leopard is going to the kill but their meal is lost
47:15off he goes
47:25that's so annoying
47:28that must have been terrifying for those cubs
47:34but we've seen tonight pabe is capable of essentially fighting off
47:40a male leopard to protect her cubs
47:45these are the lengths that a mother cheetah will go to
47:52what an incredible cat she is
48:10okay up ahead we have a cluster of of lions
48:18gordon is also on the night shift
48:22we can put the drone up hopefully spot them from the air
48:27the rogue boys are closing in on the could and pride mums and cubs
48:31we're doing one big toe here out of the equation hanging out with a second pride
48:42and at some point these rogue boys they are going to push towards these cubs
48:47and that could be tonight
48:51so wherever demo goes i'm just going to keep up with him as best i can
49:01look at him as well he's on the trail
49:05the rogue boys are now close enough to be picking up the female's scent
49:12now things are serious
49:14people is making his presence known in in sound and in scent
49:29yeah he's belting it out with all his might
49:42whoa
49:46a roar like that just gets you in the belly
49:49things are going to escalate
50:04they're running
50:07aye aye aye
50:09i don't want to lose them
50:14where have we gone pals
50:15dimo just ran off into this forest
50:23so at the moment i've lost them
50:29the rogue boys have vanished just 500 meters from the mums and young cubs
50:37i think they've disappeared into this forest
50:40this is really bad
50:57after losing the rogue boys in the night
51:01the whole team is out at dawn
51:04searching for lions
51:06oh my gosh
51:09mums
51:11what a relief
51:15anna has found the mums and young cubs
51:20okay we're all safe i can't believe it what incredible mums
51:30okay
51:36everyone's coming to say hi
51:41morning subbit
51:44hi gorgeous girl
51:45well beautiful aren't you
51:48well done for keeping your club safe
51:53oh my god back
51:54what an amazing morning
52:10this is such just like a dreamy tranquil scene
52:14all right all right all right two copies
52:24oh my god where are we with anna
52:26yeah anna demo is the right here and the three
52:30sub-adult males looking super keen in your direction
52:33the rogue boys are heading straight towards the mums and cubs
52:42and this is exactly what we don't want to happen this is really really dangerous
52:46they're trying to pick up scent you can see them right now with their noses their mouth
52:56and then they put their head up and go
53:01there's absolutely no chance that these lionesses with this amount of cubs are going to be able to
53:08outrun the road boys there's no way
53:18rare rare do you have an update
53:22like 100 meters they're super close
53:25i see them i see them
53:26okay so i've seen them she's seen them oh they're coming in they're coming in
53:56i've never heard noise like that ever where are the cubs
54:15please don't be good
