Signs to spot a narcissist pointed out by a psychotherapistSource: ITV
Transcript
00:00Because the core of a narcissist is someone who doesn't believe there's anything wrong with them at all.
00:04In fact, they think they're wonderful.
00:06And so they're very unlikely to sort of take themselves off to see a psychiatrist to get a diagnosis.
00:11Somebody sitting at home saying, okay, so if I'm with a narcissist, what will I notice?
00:15What are the things that you'll see?
00:17So one of the very first things, of course, is lack of empathy.
00:19There are nine traits in total.
00:21We say if there are five on constant display, you're dealing with a narcissist.
00:25So complete lack of empathy.
00:26So something happens to you or around you.
00:28They have no care or interest whatsoever, unless maybe performatively in the moment.
00:33That's it.
00:33Very exploitative around your relationship with them.
00:37So whatever form of relationship you have, they'll be exploiting you to get something that they want or making sure that you're making them look great.
00:45Incredibly selfish.
00:46So everything will be about them.
00:49But it could come in different forms.
00:50They could be trying to get attention for themselves or it could be by covert means.
00:54So they're getting lots of sympathy.
00:56They might tell you a terrible story about how they've sacrificed themselves as a parent, but actually it's their way of getting attention drawn in in some form.
01:03So there's lots of other parts to that.
01:04Lots of arrogance.
01:06Real issue with criticism.
01:08So you'll get either a sort of what we call a narcissistic collapse if you criticize them or they'll attack you one way or the other.
01:13There'll be some sort of rage.
01:15So lots of different traits, but they're the five that I tend to see the most active when I'm working with one or I'm noticing one.
01:20So let's talk to this one.
