Scientists develop an algorithm to measure the risk of ovarian cancer, delaying surgical menopause

The test is being made available to women at high risk of ovarian cancer in the UK through the National Health Service. Thousands of women in the UK who have particular genes which put them at a high risk of ovarian cancer have access to the test.

00:00It's designed really I think as a damage limitation option for women who are not yet ready to have
00:25the surgery because of the potentially devastating effects that surgery can have on them and it
00:32shouldn't be viewed as an alternative to the surgery because they do need to have the
00:37tubes and ovaries removed at some point. It's about giving them a bit of breathing space,
00:42time to think about what their options are.
00:45I very much wanted to be a mum so I definitely wanted to hold on to any fertility that I did
00:59have. I was obviously getting enough reassurance from that test to feel safe. I did have then
01:05another raised result. I think my son was about three. We were about to go on holiday and I do
01:14remember being on holiday thinking, okay, how much longer am I going to leave it?
