00:52hi Alan hi Davina when the burning questions can finally be answered
00:59reuniting families who've spent a lifetime apart
01:09our first searcher has been on a mission to find her brother ever since she discovered the terrible
01:28way her mother was separated from him mom was 21 when she had Jeffrey he was born two years before
01:44myself she went home one day and he wasn't there my grandparents had the baby adopted I can't imagine
01:56the pain of that she carried that every single day
02:09that's really pretty 60 year old Jane Hadlow lives with her husband Alan
02:14what does that say Jeffrey wow together they have three children and four grandchildren
02:22I adore them and I want to spend every minute with them
02:26Jane grew up in Essex with her parents Kathleen and Jeff and two brothers Stephen and Jamie
02:34Jamie's come over to share some family photos
02:37that's mum and you such a lovely photo and that I remember mum wearing that and this caravan holidays it was a canary in the cage and mum one day decided that it would be probably nice to let it out for a bit of a fly about outside
02:58and it never came back I had a fantastic childhood we all knew that she absolutely adored us she just shone
03:09that's good one as well oh that's lovely isn't it but there was one night every year when Jane's mother Kathleen changed completely
03:19bonfire night my dad always used to take us out we were just super excited to see the fireworks with dad it was great but we'd always you know where's mum why's mum not coming
03:29I do remember not understanding why she wouldn't come out she wasn't her usual bright
03:36um bright self we'd come back and mum would be in the bedroom and we didn't really see her until the next day you could see that she had been upset and crying
03:44it wasn't until Jane was 19 that she discovered the reason behind her mother's sadness
03:51she just said to me one day I'm gonna need to tell you something you've got a brother his name is Geoffrey and I had him adopted well I didn't have him adopted he was adopted
04:03Geoffrey was born on the 6th of November 1962
04:08bonfire night was the night that would bring all those memories back now I understand why she was so upset that time of the year
04:17Jane's mum grew up in Liverpool today she's returning to the childhood home where 21 year old Kathleen lived when she discovered she was pregnant
04:28this is where it all began my grandparents were not happy at all about mum and being pregnant and not being married they were very strict Catholics so having a baby out of wedlock was shameful
04:53they sent her away to the Isle of Wight they were trying to hide it basically
05:00Kathleen spent the duration of her pregnancy miles away from family and friends but when it was time to have her baby she returned to Liverpool
05:08mum brought the baby home to this house I think she did have him for quite a few months she had that time to actually to bond with him
05:17after she had Geoffrey I think the pressure her parents probably put on her every single day
05:24we don't want a baby here don't another mouth to feed I think she fought it as hard as she possibly could
05:31she wasn't going to let him go but she came home one day and the baby wasn't there he was gone
05:39all they said to her was you don't need to worry he's been adopted
05:46when I look at the house I feel the pain that mum must have felt at that time
05:53in the years following Geoffrey's adoption Kathleen got married to Jane's father and built a family
06:07but she never forgot her firstborn son
06:10I still know that it hurt mum to the depths of her soul to let him go
06:15she carried it with her for the rest of her life
06:18in 1994 Kathleen sadly died of cancer aged 53
06:25one of the last things she spoke about was Geoffrey
06:28and she said Jane when I'm gone can you please find him for me
06:33can you please tell him what happened and tell him that I loved him
06:37and I didn't want to let him go
06:39she held my hand and she said please please make sure that you do it
06:44ever since her mother died over 30 years ago Jane has been desperately trying to find her brother
06:54but in 2011 she was forced to put her search on hold
06:59when I was 45 they diagnosed me with head and neck cancer
07:04I was having treatment for about a year and a half
07:08and yeah it changed the way I look but it also completely changed me as a person
07:17I can get it I can
07:19and the way that I live my life every day counts
07:25I just need to find my brother Geoffrey
07:30I want to know that he's had a happy upbringing
07:35that he had parents that loved him
07:38I don't want to miss that opportunity of being able to meet him
07:42and to look him in the eye and call him brother
07:45that would be wonderful
07:48before she came to us Jane had tried all she could to find her sibling
07:58but every search hit a dead end
08:01Jane knew from her mother that her brother had originally been given the name Geoffrey Lacey
08:07our specialist intermediaries wrote to the general register office to learn his new identity
08:13they discovered that his name had been changed to Andrew
08:16and that he'd been adopted by a family in the Lake District
08:20we tracked Andrew down to where he now lives
08:29we wrote to tell him he had a younger sister who was trying to find him
08:34Andrew works in insurance and has a teenage son
08:38I'm meeting him at the home he shares with his partner Daniela
08:42ahead of filming we told Andrew about his birth mother's death
08:47thanks a lot
08:49cheers
08:51it's going to be hard for Andrew to hear the heartbreaking way he was separated from his birth mother

10:02only the last few years I've talked to my sister about it

15:30fishing is my biggest hobby everything goes out of your mind when you're
15:35fishing family it means a lot to me I try to be the best father I can Kevin
15:46was just a teenager when in 1973 he met his first love Jacqueline we dated
15:53almost straight away it was like love at first sight almost you know I met Jackie
16:00in September and around January time I had a phone call from Jack telling me that
16:09she was pregnant Jackie was living at home with her parents they were angry and upset
16:24and I think it was decided by my mum and Jack's parents that we should have the baby
16:29adopted arrangements for their baby's adoption had already been made when in
16:37August 1974 Jackie gave birth to a daughter they named Michelle
16:42today Kevin is returning to the site where Michelle was born the hospital building has
16:51since been demolished this is where the maternity hospital was this is where Michelle was born
16:59she spent ten days in hospital I visited every day after work on my scooter I did get a few chances to
17:13hold her to hold her which was very special to me something I'll never forget
17:21the day Michelle was taken was heartbreaking for both me and Jack but we knew we couldn't keep her
17:33if there was any way we could have kept Michelle we would have done but there was no way we were ever going to support a baby
17:42at our ages you know
17:45very sad times
17:50there you are wrote in church
18:04uh-huh three years after Michelle's adoption in 1977 Kevin and Jackie got married your mum looked really nice that day Sean
18:15she did she looked beautiful the couple went on to have three more children together including their daughter Charlene
18:22I can't actually remember being told about Michelle because as long as I can remember I've known about her
18:29we've always wanted to look for Michelle but I think Jack didn't think Michelle would ever forgive us
18:37because we continued life and had three more children
18:43sadly in 2013 after a 14-month battle with cancer Jackie died
18:50she was taken too soon
18:53your mum always wished that Michelle would come looking for us
18:57it would have meant the world if she'd have knocked the door one day
19:00I think it's just really important for her to know that she mum did love her
19:07that she was always wanted
19:09she was
19:11come here
19:13oh what a pot today
19:15my little chicken
19:17who wants some cake

19:39this is lovely so thank you
19:41I'm just hoping for a good outcome
19:43on this search and
19:45I know how much it means to all of you
19:49Michelle she's always been in my thoughts
19:52I don't ask for a lot
19:54I've got everything I want
19:56the only thing missing is
19:58the girl
19:59the little girl we give away
20:06when Kevin came to us
20:08he knew that his daughter was originally called Michelle
20:11and that she was born in August
20:13but he didn't know the precise day
20:15so our intermediaries searched in the local authority registry office
20:21to try and locate her exact date of birth
20:24once they tracked this down
20:26they then applied to learn Michelle's adoptive name
20:29they discovered that she was now called Hillary
20:32and her adoptive parents brought her up
20:34just over an hour away
20:36from where her birth father lives
20:38Hillary is the director of operations for a series of nursery schools
20:49she has a grown-up son called Archie who lives with her
20:53it's so sad for Hillary that her birth mother Jackie is no longer here
20:58but I can tell her that her birth father has thought about her all these years
21:04and she has three full siblings
21:11Hillary has been informed ahead of filming

33:33She always used to do so.
33:34Do a happy dance?

33:39And do a dad dance, that's about it.
33:41She was a bit dippy, but then so am I.
33:44She had no sense of direction, and I'm certainly like that.
33:47I'm really terrible.
33:49I might have a few dippy genes.
33:51Sense of direction's not bad these days, but yeah.
33:54As soon as I walked into the room, I just knew instantly that he was a part of me.
33:59He was a part of our family.
