Transcript
00:00But coming up next, it is another championship on the line as Steve Macklin defends the TNA International Championship against Frankie Kazarian.
00:11Can the king finally rise and capture his crown?
00:15Can the king finally rise and capture his crown?
00:45No matter what is coming at you, nothing gets through.
00:49I have my eyes set on the international title currently held by Steve Macklin.
00:57I have defended this title in a dog collar match against Eric Young, Jake Something, Nance Warner, Matt Cardona.
01:07Because I'm the one who holds the line for TNA Wrestling.
01:11A title like that should be held by a man of honor like me, not some dirty jarhead who's living off of his frivolous service at a bunch of old lame war stories.
01:32Your opinion doesn't mean a damn thing.
01:35What Steve Macklin needs to understand is that history doesn't remember soldiers, it remembers kings.
01:46Let me make this perfectly clear for you, Frankie.
01:48I am the present and I am the future of TNA Wrestling.
01:52You can walk around all you want as the self-proclaimed king of TNA.
01:57Deep down, you know the truth.
01:58Your time is running out.
02:00As we get set for this TNA International Championship matchup, let's take a look at the headlines.
02:12Frankie Kazarian has belittled Steve Macklin's military service a number of times.
02:17Now Macklin pinned Kazarian just last night on Impact in a tag team matchup that featured Jake Something and Mr. Anderson.
02:24Kazarian is seeking his first TNA title in three years.
02:28Can he do it at the expense of Steve Macklin?
02:41The following contest is scheduled for one call and it's for the TNA International Championship.
02:52Introducing first, the challenger from Yucca Valley, California, weighing in at 240 pounds, Frankie Kazarian.
03:06And the king comes to take his crown.
03:12Frankie Kazarian, you said it, seeking his first championship in nearly three years.
03:19Kaz, who had an unsuccessful bid for the TNA World Championship, has turned his eyes to Steve Macklin and the international title.
03:29Frankie Kazarian, an international athlete in his own right, I think it's a good fit.
03:33Does the king have what it takes to put down bulletproof Steve Macklin?
03:40She's so good, because she's so good.
03:43And his opponent, from Rutherford, New Jersey,
03:47weighing in at 227 pounds, he is the TNA International Champion.
04:11And the longest inaugural title reign in this company's 23-year history.
04:30Kazarian's made it personal, but Macklin's waiting for a fight.
04:35And here's one thing Macklin is never backing down from.
04:41It is a fight.
04:43Well, especially when Frankie Kazarian has belittled his military service, Steve Macklin takes that to heart.
04:49It's one of the reasons why this Sunday he'll be in New York City taking part in Tunnels to Towers 5K run and walk in New York City.
04:57Donations from which we'll be used to pay mortgages for the families, the first responders who've lost their lives in duty,
05:04building handicapped accessible smart houses for catastrophically injured combat veterans
05:09and constructing veterans' villages to help eradicate veteran homelessness.
05:14Right now, right here in Edmonton-Athlin, he's got to put all his energy, all his efforts,
05:29on boarding Frankie Kazarian.
05:32And that is no easy feat.
05:36You have to imagine what Kaz is willing to do to walk out of here with gold.
05:41It was back at Unbreakable in April that we crowned the inaugural TNA International Champion Steve Macklin,
05:50who qualified for that series of Triple Threat Masters which culminated that night in Las Vegas, Nevada.
05:56We got a glimpse at it earlier on this evening within our broadcast here at Victory Road.
06:01Can you put into words, as a wrestler, how difficult it is for someone to take a championship from nothing into something?
06:09I mean, it's not exactly tangible.
06:14It's one of the, you can win a title and it not necessarily, like you said, go on to mean something.
06:20You have to do something with it.
06:21And Macklin jumped into the trenches quite literally.
06:25He talked about it.
06:26That incredible, vicious dog collar match with Eric Young.
06:30Macklin immediately doing whatever it takes.
06:33Whoa, going for the chicken wing.
06:35Frankie Kazarian certainly willing to do whatever it takes.
06:38Very, very close.
06:39But Macklin, like I said, dove into those trenches to put the international title on the map.
06:45And here's the thing.
06:54In a dog collar match, in a no rules, anything goes, knock down, drag out fight,
07:00there are a few people I would ever bet against less than Steve Macklin.
07:04I would never bet against him in a fight like that.
07:06But in a straight up match, Frankie Kazarian has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.
07:13Kazarian does have a lot of tricks, but we've seen throughout this championship reign for Steve Macklin
07:19that it's not just about being in those extreme hardcore environments.
07:22He was able to put away Eric Young in a standard rules match.
07:25He was able to do the same thing with Jake Something, Mance Warner, multiple times,
07:29multiple styles of single matches.
07:31This is something that Macklin has evolved into.
07:33I don't think he's ever been better from a technical standpoint.
07:36I wouldn't disagree with that either.
07:38Macklin has done nothing but improve.
07:40Since I've seen him, quite frankly, in the professional wrestling industry,
07:44it's been an upward trajectory.
07:45But especially here in TNA, he's found his potential immense some.
07:50However, I will at least say, in this international title run,
07:54in this latest Steve Macklin we've seen,
07:56he has not competed against somebody, in my opinion, the wrestling IQ level.
08:01Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, it's going for KIN.
08:03And now Kazarian scrambling to the ropes.
08:08That was very smart by Kazarian.
08:11I think he is one of the craftiest, wiliest, smartest veterans
08:16and in-ring technicians that Macklin has faced.
08:21Macklin and Kazarian getting in each other's heads,
08:23saying, I was this close to getting you.
08:26And here's the thing, Macklin is technically probably the best he's ever been.
08:35But if Frankie Kazarian can attack his psyche,
08:39come get into his head, get into his mind,
08:41and maybe cause him to see red and just go without thinking about technique,
08:47without thinking about wrestling, and just go forward fighting like a truck.
08:53That's where Frankie Kazarian can take advantage.
08:55Clubbing blows to the back there by Steve Macklin.
09:03The backbreaker trying to retain the championship and a kickout.
09:11It's a critical defense for Steve Macklin on the path to bow for glory.
09:18You know, Macklin, just like every wrestler in this company,
09:21wants to walk into the biggest event of the year.
09:23Momentum, if you're a champion, you want to hold that title high.
09:29On the move.
09:29Oh, it's gone for the scud, and Kazarian sidestepped it.
09:36And the missile didn't hit its target.
09:39Crash and burn for Macklin.
09:43On the champion's advantage, the title can only change hands
09:46via pinfall and submission in the ring.
09:49Kazarian knows that very well.
09:51Lying and wait, there's Kazarian to bulldoze Macklin.
09:56Let's take another look at this.
09:58Macklin had his sights locked in on Kaz,
10:00but last minute redirecting the scud to the outside.
10:05And Tom, I can't, it looks like Macklin may have busted his lip open or something.
10:10Moments ago.
10:11I don't know if it was that spill to the ground,
10:14or if it was just before that, but either way.
10:17Like drop across the chest.
10:19It had been moments prior when the two were exchanging right hands in the center of the ring.
10:23We expected this to be physical.
10:25These two go all the way back one-on-one since 2022.
10:29Macklin actually ran Kazarian out of the company at that point in time,
10:33when Kazarian didn't officially work for this company.
10:35And now, Kaz trying to run Macklin off of the international title.
10:43Trying to win the title, saw how that forearm crossed the face there, Kazarian was shrewd.
10:50Normally in moments like this in a match is when I say,
10:53hey, it does something on Manly when you see your own blood spill.
10:57But if there's one guy I wouldn't doubt when that happens, it's Steve Macklin.
11:01You talked about Macklin seeing red, that temper.
11:04It has cost him in the past.
11:07It's also guided him to some of his biggest victories.
11:10Ironically, I was talking about Rebellion 2023 earlier on tonight.
11:13It was the night that Steve Macklin won the TNA World Championship.
11:17An incredible matchup against Kushida.
11:20And I think the emotions that Macklin was feeling that night,
11:23wait, Kushida sparked the knockout, led him to that title win.
11:26So it's a double-edged sword.
11:29Uh-oh, wait a minute.
11:30Oh, was trying to catch him for a uranage there.
11:34And Macklin still able to drop Kazarian.
11:40Didn't quite get all of it he wanted, but enough to put Kaz down.
11:47Straight right hands, doubled over there by Kazarian.
11:53Quick knee strike, and the clothesline.
11:55Great combination there by Kazarian.
12:00And Kazarian's got Macklin on the retreat here, so to speak.
12:09Definitely got him on the defense.
12:11That's for damn sure.
12:12In my opinion, Frankie Kazarian has, you're going to bite me for this.
12:22I'm not going to, I won't say learn, I won't say learn to the errors of his ways.
12:26He certainly hasn't.
12:27In his purse, but in his pursuit of the TNA World Championship.
12:31But I do believe he's learned from his mistakes.
12:34Let's put it that way.
12:35I think he's maybe more focused and dangerous than ever.
12:38Rolls through with a neckbreaker, trying to win the title, and a kickout.
12:41I would agree on him being more focused and more dangerous.
12:44He's trying to add himself to a historic list.
12:48Frankie Kazarian could become the sixth man in history to become a Grand Slam champion in TNA Wrestling.
12:56The others, the TNA Hall of Famer Abyss, the phenomenal AJ Styles, Austin Aries, Samoa Joe, and Eric Young,
13:03who we saw earlier on tonight.
13:04He has done just about everything there is to do in TNA Wrestling.
13:15He's going to add a new first for himself if he can get the win here tonight.
13:18But Macklin continuing to put up the fight.
13:21I'm going for an Olympic slam there.
13:28Kazarian able to escape it.
13:29Kazarian was trying to hook Macklin there, trying to set up for the chicken wing.
13:33Macklin sensed it coming.
13:38Macklin, shoulders down, Kazarian, tight cover there and a kickout.
13:43Kaz, continuing to punish Macklin.
13:52Oh, face first into the knee and a huge clothesline by the champion.
13:56And that may be the opening that Steve Macklin needed.
14:06Both men out.
14:07Both men trying to find their footing once again.
14:16What a night this has been here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for Victory Road.
14:20Our final live broadcast on the path to Bound for Glory.
14:27And now Macklin with the Fez press all over Frankie Kazarian in this TNA International Championship bout.
14:37Picking up steam.
14:40Macklin trying to stick it to Frankie Kazarian.
14:43Who's been a thorn in his side for weeks now.
14:53Let's not forget that stare down he had with El Macias backstage.
14:58That was quite the confrontation.
15:01Quite the surprise on the countdown to Victory Road.
15:04Now the Olympic slam connects.
15:06There's the cover.
15:07Can Macklin retain?
15:09Kazarian is still in this.
15:13You can see in the back of your screen there, that's what it is all about.
15:19I know exactly how much pride Steve Macklin takes in being that inaugural champion.
15:24He ain't ready to be done yet.
15:27Whoa, chicken wing again applied.
15:30Attempted by Frankie Kazarian here.
15:34All of a psycho knee.
15:38Macklin able to open up an opportunity again.
15:40The diving headbutt by Macklin.
15:44The jar headbutt.
15:46Pressing the shoulder down.
15:47But Kazarian kicked out.
15:49Especially poetic given the words Kazarian has used to describe Macklin in recent weeks.
15:55But even that wasn't enough.
16:03What is Macklin going to have to do to put the veteran Frankie Kazarian away?
16:10Oh.
16:11No.
16:11No.
16:26No.
16:29Macklin fired up here.
16:31oh wait a minute oh the color out of the corner what a counter
16:38caught in the crosshairs and macklin is still alive that was unbelievable for frankie kazarian
16:45the wherewithal and the ability to counter caught in the crosshairs
16:51we talked about how crafty frankie kazarian is he's going for the chicken wing there
16:59now macklin trying to turn this over think about a boston crab perhaps
17:04frankie kazarian able to throw macklove here macklin winning kia again trying to set up for the kia
17:12kazarian continues to have answers to the questions
17:15this is that craftiness this is that in ring iq i was telling you about
17:23it's deep in the match where it really really counts
17:29when you don't when you're not normally thinking clearly you're going on instinct
17:34you're going on adrenaline your plans have gone out the window
17:38macklin able to stop frankie kazarian up top here now the battle taking itself to the top row
17:51whoa
18:00macklin pulling frankie kazarian
18:03now it could be macklin trying to think superplex here and there it is able to hit it not letting go though
18:19oh my god nearly right to the back of the neck but kazarian rolls away and rolls out of the ring
18:29whether by instinct or by just veteran maneuvering
18:38macklin with the superplex rolled right over wasn't on there dropping kaz right on the back
18:45of his neck but kaz you saw him even look to the ropes there getting out of dodge
18:54and the flingshot to any team here's the cover macklin is still in it
19:04now it's kaz getting frustrated the definition of a hard-fought match as even as it gets
19:15oh and now it's kaz reversing roles here got macklin in the prone position up top
19:26now wait wait a second hold on it's is kazarian thinking about the flux capacitor we haven't
19:32seen this in forever oh down goes kazarian hard to the mat
19:37left up top kazarian was saying about taking a big risk there against macklin shows you the gravity
19:45and the desperation of this moment off the top once again going for the jar head block oh and
19:52the chicken wing great way to capitalize from frankie kazarian there
19:56can he get it sunk in macklin is fighting him yeah let's go
20:07macklin isn't fading frankie kazarian holding on to the chicken wing that missed headbutt that cost
20:14macklin big time
20:15kazarian hard to the outside macklin on the move now he connects with the scud
20:26taking out kaz on the ramp kazarian was able to sidestep that earlier on in the matchup
20:32but not this time now macklin not slowing down macklin stomping the hell out of frankie kazarian
20:45macklin with his eyes on kaz
20:59what's macklin macklin was saying about caught in the crosshairs but there's el masias
21:04with triple a who he saw in the countdown to victory road masias got in the face of macklin
21:11this is just popped right back up i said said on macklin
21:18oh wait oh wait a minute kazarian kicked the rope creating a low blow

22:24take a look back here at the conclusion of this matchup though we thought it was the junior and
22:28opsi and el masias on the countdown to victory road confronting macklin but you see this the low blow
22:34created by kazarian using the middle rope the referee never saw it albeit not illegal still
22:42the explanation we were talking about earlier on tonight how frankie kazarian is willing to do
22:47whatever it takes to win he saw the opportunity and he struck
