Where in Europe is diabetes most prevalent?

A recent report has found that some 66 million European adults suffer from diabetes. This number is set to increase by another 10% by 2050.

00:07Diabetes is a chronic and metabolic disease characterized by high levels of blood sugar,
00:13which can over time lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, highs, kidneys and nerves.
00:19A recent report by the International Diabetes Federation found that 10% of European adults suffer from the disease.
00:28This figure is set to increase by another 10% by 2050, when the disease could affect up to 72 million people.
00:36Europe has the world's largest share of patients with type 1 diabetes.
00:42One-third of Europeans aged between 20 and 79 living with the condition are undiagnosed.
00:48Within the European Union, the condition is most prevalent among adults in Germany, Italy and Spain.
00:55Portugal, Croatia, Malta and Cyprus show the highest age-adjusted prevalence,
01:01with around 10% of their adults suffering from the disease.
01:05The lowest prevalence can be found in Ireland followed by the Netherlands and Austria.
01:10The study points to an increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Europe and worldwide,
01:16stating these associated with higher levels of urbanization, aging populations and unhealthy habits,
01:22including insufficient physical activity and higher consumption of unhealthy foods.
