Yves Jorens, Professor of European Social Security Law and Social Criminal Law at Ghent University, spoke to CGTN Europe about his new report examining how pilots’ and cabin crew’s employment contracts influence decision-making in the cockpit and cabin. The study found that more than half of pilots were reluctant to challenge airline instructions over safety or reliability concerns, while 40% said their employment status directly affected their decisions. It also highlights the role of a pilot’s home base in shaping their legal and social protections. The report concludes that employment pressures are linked to real aviation safety risks and urges lawmakers to take action.
