00:00Hello my dear friends, and welcome back to another Star Wars video.
00:04So we need to talk about this situation with the Mandalorian and Grogu trailer,
00:07because things have taken a very sour turn for the Star Wars fandom.
00:11Things are getting too spicy for the pepper.
00:13After the trailer dropped, I posted my breakdown, my reaction, and then I went on social media,
00:19and I realized, ooh, Star Wars fans are not happy.
00:23The overall fan reaction was rather mixed.
00:25There are definitely fans saying they can't wait for the next chapter of this story,
00:29and they're excited to see Din and Grogu's return.
00:31But by and large, the majority of reactions I've seen are either apathetic or negative.
00:37I kind of expected fans to respond in a pretty meh kind of way to this,
00:42but the responses have been absolutely insane.
00:45And if you're Lucas from seeing all of this, you might be a bit worried.
00:49I've never seen so many fans who've just completely checked out,
00:52or who are just not impressed in the slightest.
00:54Now one of the big reasons for this reaction is the Mandalorian Season 3.
00:59It's generally considered the lowest point for the TV show,
01:02and the overall sentiment seems to be that Lucasfilm really needs to pull something massive
01:06out of the hat to get Star Wars fans back on board.
01:09They need to change the formula, do something new and exciting,
01:12and until then, Star Wars fans are going to keep reacting in the same kinds of ways.
01:17And so that's the reason people on social media saw this,
01:20and they said,
01:21this is not the way.
01:22This ain't it.
01:23So in terms of the criticisms, fans pointed out the bizarre lack of dialogue,
01:27the bland feel of the trailer,
01:29which had a confusing blend of 80s vibes,
01:31while also doing that early 2000s thing,
01:34where you showcase the movie with different shots,
01:36and there isn't too much talking.
01:38Not to mention, the trailer tells us absolutely nothing about the plot.
01:41And then there are those who say that because this movie is essentially a reboot,
01:45the return of Mando and Grogu as a main cinematic event
01:48isn't as impressive as it would have been during the peak of Grogu hype.
01:52They're putting out this movie four years too late,
01:55and it's not like Lucasfilm has the excuse that they planned this years ago.
01:58The decision to not make Season 4 came just before it was going to go into production.
02:02Now look, I do happen to agree with most of these criticisms,
02:07but as I'm sure you know, I had a far more positive take than most,
02:11and it wasn't until I posted my reaction,
02:13then went on social media to see what fans were saying,
02:15that I realised that my opinion is in the minority.
02:19One of my tweets even featured in an Eckhart's Ladder video,
02:22and so I just want to explain my rationale,
02:24tell you where I'm coming from,
02:25and just explain why I had the reaction I did.
02:28And the reason?
02:29I still maintain the trailer is better than I expected.
02:33So, if you've been watching me since the very first rumours
02:35that we were getting a Mandalorian movie,
02:37then you know that most of the things we've heard about it,
02:40kind of suck.
02:41I honestly don't mean to sound negative, but oh my goodness,
02:44some of the rumours and leaks are so confusing and bizarre,
02:48it makes you wonder how they went from Seasons 1, 2 and 3,
02:51to this, which just sounds like a mishmash of different missions.
02:54So, all I've been hearing for the last nine months,
02:57from people I know, from my sources, from reliable scoopers,
03:01is how much of a letdown this film is going to be,
03:03and that we shouldn't expect much.
03:05It's also why I keep saying I wish Starfighter came first.
03:08So, as you can imagine, when the trailer finally dropped,
03:11I went into it with a very different mindset
03:13to your average casual Star Wars fan,
03:15especially those who've not been in the loop.
03:17I wasn't expecting some kind of saga-changing story.
03:21I knew this movie was going to be whimsical,
03:23fun, silly, but very self-contained.
03:26From that perspective, which is going in with caution,
03:29with an understanding of what Lucasfilm is trying to achieve,
03:32that this movie is not Season 4, but a bridge between the third season
03:36and whatever's going to come after it,
03:37then to be honest, I was actually impressed.
03:40I was expecting so much worse.
03:43Now, I'm sorry to do the rhetorical questions thing,
03:46but is this movie going to revive the franchise?
03:48Honestly, no.
03:50Is it going to get Star Wars fans back in cinemas,
03:52maybe make Disney a bit of money on merchandise?
03:55Probably, depending on what the marketing looks like a few months from now.
03:59Because what a lot of fans are forgetting
04:00is this is just a teaser trailer.
04:04They're going to do some TV spots,
04:06and then there will be a long final trailer.
04:09And if the folks over at Lucasfilm are intelligent,
04:12they would put all of the marketing weight
04:13on the fun aspect of this film.
04:16Forget everything else.
04:17Serious storylines,
04:18The Remnant vs. The New Republic,
04:21if you're talking about the action,
04:22and you're talking about the fun,
04:24the Anzellans and Grogu,
04:25this teaser kind of nailed it.
04:27So they need to make the whimsy the selling point.
04:30Look, if we're being realistic,
04:31and we're not talking about those who watch every TV show,
04:34we're not talking about you and me,
04:36The Rise of Skywalker was the last Star Wars film people remember.
04:40The last one they paid to go and see,
04:42and the last one they walked away from.
04:43Regardless of what you think of it,
04:45that movie had all the pressure in the world
04:47to wrap up a saga that began in 1977.
04:51For my taste,
04:52it didn't stick the landing,
04:53but it took itself very seriously.
04:55And so from that perspective,
04:57I understand Lucasfilm's logic
04:58to launch their first Star Wars movie of the 2020s
05:02and have it be something lighthearted,
05:04what we call safe.
05:05But at the same time,
05:06like I said,
05:07they've left it quite late.
05:08If The Mandalorian had a movie back in 2021,
05:122022,
05:13it probably would have had a much higher box office
05:15than what I assume this is going to get.
05:18In 2026,
05:20after one of the longest breaks for Star Wars content in ages,
05:23is it going to pay off for Disney
05:24when they're putting out a movie
05:25about characters who peaked five years ago?
05:28And it's safe to say plenty of fans
05:29who initially loved Mando
05:31have lost all interest.
05:33I'm seeing these reactions online.
05:34I know it's very easy to get sucked up
05:36into the doom and gloom,
05:37but it's no joke
05:39when the majority of things you're seeing
05:40is hate for a movie.
05:42Even from people who I know
05:43love the first two seasons,
05:45you know the situation is bad.
05:47I don't blame fans who feel this way.
05:49I don't blame fans who feel nothing
05:51after this trailer.
05:52Those who say it's corporate slop,
05:54I get it.
05:55I am in a place with Star Wars
05:56where I'm always hoping for the best.
05:58You guys know I'm one of the more positive channels
06:00on YouTube,
06:01but it doesn't mean I don't feel frustration.
06:03I'm going in cautiously optimistic,
06:05but I've just come to terms with the fact
06:07that until Star Wars consistently makes things
06:09on the level of Andor,
06:11then the franchise is never going to return
06:12to the prominence it once experienced.
06:15So these days,
06:16I just take things for what they are.
06:18For me personally,
06:19the most important project
06:20is Ahsoka Season 2.
06:22If they mess that up
06:23and it ends up sucking,
06:24they ruin Anakin's character
06:26or Balen or Shin.
06:27I don't know guys,
06:28that's going to be a really hard blow.
06:30I was really disappointed after the Acolyte,
06:32and to be honest,
06:33I've not fully recovered.
06:35My faith has certainly been shaken,
06:36but I love George Lucas' Star Wars
06:38way too much
06:39to ever walk away.
06:41If one day,
06:41worse comes to worse,
06:42we will always have the original trilogy,
06:45and if you're a fan of it like I am,
06:46the prequel trilogy.
06:48Nothing Disney could ever do,
06:49or dream of doing,
06:51is ever going to ruin those for me.
06:52So for those people who tell me,
06:54you don't talk about Star Wars
06:55the way you used to,
06:56or people tell me I've changed,
06:58people say I'm way more negative,
06:59I just think it comes to a point where
07:01you just feel a bit burnt out from all of it,
07:03when you get disappointed so often,
07:05for projects you were so excited about,
07:07it does take a toll.
07:09So even though I'm someone who enjoyed this trailer,
07:11I 100% see the other side of the coin,
07:13and if I knew nothing about the leaks,
07:15then I too would be a bit disappointed.
07:18So let's take a look at some social media reactions.
07:21So this first person is expressing the opinion that
07:23the film looks exactly like the TV show,
07:26and many others have asked the question,
07:28so what's the point?
07:30They say,
07:31Bravo Jon Favreau,
07:32you made the first ugly looking Star Wars movie,
07:35after a 48 year streak.
07:37Incredible achievement.
07:39I would say the colouring and the saturation,
07:41are my criticisms of the visuals,
07:43but I thought there were a couple of really cool cinematic shots.
07:46If you compare this to the saga itself,
07:48even episodes 7, 8 and 9 look more impressive.
07:51Say what you will about the way they handled Luke,
07:53and their real story.
07:54The sequel trilogy was stunning,
07:57and I've actually seen quite a few accounts say
07:58that they miss the sequel trilogy watching this.
08:01This person says,
08:03I miss Rey.
08:04Ooh, that is pretty damning.
08:06It took the Mando movie trailer for folks to rethink the sequels
08:09and start saying nice things.
08:11Yeah, the shift is pretty crazy.
08:12Then there are those who think the reason we're getting a movie like this,
08:15is because Star Wars fans shot down ambitious stories like episode 8.
08:19This person writes,
08:21Rian Johnson wrote the word laser sword in a script,
08:23and now we have this.
08:25Evidently, that is referencing Luke in The Last Jedi
08:28when he says laser sword instead of lightsaber,
08:31but he said it in a mocking way.
08:33I remember, there was a lot of dissent.
08:34There were fans who couldn't stand him saying that.
08:36So I guess there's an argument to be made that with a film like this,
08:39Luke's film is playing it safe,
08:41because they don't want to risk backlash or a box office flop.
08:44This person writes,
08:45I am a Star Wars fanatic.
08:48I yearn for more Star Wars movies.
08:50I miss them.
08:51I'm a fan of The Mandalorian.
08:52So why didn't The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer get me super excited?
08:57This goes back to what I was saying that there were fans who felt nothing,
09:00and who said it just felt corporate.
09:02Today, for the first time ever,
09:04I heard the word Grogu slop.
09:05But now, my friends, I turn it over to you.
09:08What did you guys think?
09:10Did the trailer blow you away?
09:11Or was it average?
09:13Maybe you hated it.
